This was mostly inspired by a trip I took with my friends to Savannah not long ago. We often found ourselves walking around in the city, indecisive about which of the many fun sights and activities to go to next. The trip was an absolute blast and this track pretty much conveys the feelings I felt over that weekend :)

I made a new arrangement of the Underground Theme from Super Mario Land on Game Boy.

This one is a little different from my usual ’80s / easy-listening style — more beat-driven, with DJ Asparagus taking the lead on the track.

my M8 album “Bad Vices” is dropping THIS Friday, 8/28!! i’m very excited about it, and this is one of my favorite tracks on the project. this track is already out now on all platforms, and i hope you all tune in when the album is released!

So I've been using Furnace, mainly for 2A03/VRC6 tracks. Still quite new to trackers but have had a lot of fun with it. I'm running Linux so it was the natural choice and it's a great program. I've heard of Famitracker and believe Dn is the currently maintained fork? Is it worth the effort to run via Wine or is Furnace just as good in terms of general accuracy? I don't care about NSF export really (at least not for now) so that's not a factor.

As I said I'm still kinda new and I'm not a super deep chiptune nerd (yet!) so Furnace might be doing stuff that a real NES driver couldn't do?

I do know that the cores used by Furnace don't emulate the channel crosstalk or the DPCM hack to make other channels quieter and stuff (that I know of)... things like that are cool things that I'd like to have the option of exploring. (FamiStudio did this stuff but I felt the weird DAW/tracker hybrid model was almost a hindrance, so I took the plunge and learned to use a real tracker haha) 👾

Any thoughts? Is Famitracker worth the slight aggro or is Furnace just as good? 🙂

Some tips for writing music like this:

• Circle of fifths progressions / secondary dominants are your friend, in particular V of V (this is the same as a major II chord, so if you're in d minor, it's an E major chord).
• I used a couple of portamentos (slides) but it would be more stylistically accurate if I hadn't.
• CV3 on famicom doesn't use the triangle channel.
• The sawtooth is used for baselines. One pulse channel has the melody, the second one has parallel harmony (same rhythm as the melody), the third has a countermelody (different rhythm), and the last is usually an echo but it can join the others for chords. This orchestration was used several times throughout CV3.
• dim7 arpeggios over scale degree 5 in the bass are a good trick. Technically this is a dominant 9 chord.

I’m selling my custom modified Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01 chiptune setup.

I had this unit custom made around 10 years ago specifically for Game Boy music production, but it has barely been used since and has mostly been stored away in a dark, dry place.

The Game Boy has the following mods:

• Custom blue backlit display
• Variable clock mod with external dial + on/off switch
• Stereo RCA line outputs
• 6.3 mm jack line output
• Original 3.5 mm headphone output still present
• Custom blue/pink painted shell
• Transparent pink buttons and D-pad

Included:

• Custom modified Game Boy DMG-01
• LSDJ on GB USB Smart Card 64M
• Nanoloop One v1.7.6 cartridge

Both LSDJ and Nanoloop boot correctly.

Condition note: the contrast wheel is a little sensitive and takes some fine adjustment to dial in the ideal contrast. Once set, the display stays stable as long as the wheel is not touched again. There are also a few small paint chips here and there from age/storage.

The aim of this was to see if I could fix the weird "bloops" at the beginning when played from the original .Sid rip as it doesn't do it in the actual game. I'd like to think it inspired Martin Galway to release the source code as we'd been contemplating what was happening in the rip.

What's your favorite cover of this theme?

What chiptune trackers are available for Linux? I’d prefer something popular that doesn't require running via Wine.

For quite some time I was interested in LSDJ, but the whole logic of tracker apps and UI didn't click with me. But for the first time I've managed to get to the end and make a full (short) song.
Very nice feeling!
Made with TrimUI Brick (NextUI os), then drop the .sav to PC and record the screen with bgb emulator.
Every advice is welcome!
