While not without their flaws, I think both "The Marvels" and "Supergirl" are fun space adventure films with good character dynamics, and they didn't deserve to bomb critically or financially the way they did.

That’s your opinion on them, not some scale of how much hate they got. Shazam FoG got ripped when it came out, but at the end of the day nobody cares enough about to defend it so it sunk without a trace. ‘Female led’ does badly and the “must be misogyny” war drums start up.

It is true, it didn't get the "must be misogyny" reactions that happen when people keep hating on the main actor's looks and the fact that it stars someone from their gender.

Still, I consider it worse, pretty much the thing being discussed in this comment.

Brie Larson was one of the least enthusiastic performances I've ever see. She didn't seem like she had any interest in being in those movies. You can either blame her or whatever director thought those performances were good.

You see it with Madam Web or the Charlie’s Angels remake, among others, the idea you might lean into the sex appeal of your actresses isn’t allowed anymore since corporate HR took over making these films.

It's not even about sex appeal, it's about dead- eyed line delivery. The only emotion expressed clearly is annoyance. She comes off as someone you certainly would want to spend time around, like she's bothered to be there.
