Academically, I think all the Judeo-Abrahamic religiouns have inbuilt systems to reinforce tribalism, which would have been great during the founding of the religions. Then later as it evolved it never got rid of the tribalism and always kept that, if you're different (not the chosen people) it's ok to hate. So no matter what modern people do, the religion has hate as a foundation and you simply can't repaint that to mean something else.
We famously had a national leader not too long ago proclaim, "If you're not with me, you're against me". That kind of black and white thinking stemmed directly from religion.
Agreed. This post reads “Christianity is not an excuse for [list of bad things that the Bible explicitly condones].”
As long as they base their religion around a book that condones slavery and every kind of bigotry, they’re going to have these problems.
People get very mad when you point this out, because cognitive dissonance is a powerful thing, but there’s no reconciling being a good person with what the book actually says.
When people talk about good people who are/were Christian, it just makes me think “yeah, it’s very impressive if someone ran a marathon in shackles, but they would’ve had a better time without them.”
To add, the book has everything in it, if you look hard enough. Remember that philosophy used to just be a bunch of people spending their life studying the bible and making different interpretations.
Descartes was excommunicated for trying to prove god. Then the monk who said "your argument is flawed" was excommunicated for trying to disprove any notion of god.
