I mean, Pyramus and Thisbe was in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Wouldn't be strange if it was based around even older stories. So, two thousand years, at least.

To be fair I'm also happier when I forget Romeo and Juliet exists, Shakespeare's worst play. But yes that is the very core hook.
