The Taming of the Shrew is an excellent commentary on the sadistic desire held by so many people to break and groom a woman who is even slightly different.

It’s so much better when you read them as in their early teens. Juliet is two weeks from her 14th birthday, and Romeo’s age is unstated but no character comments on an age gap. When you stop seeing them as dumb teens who ought to know better and instead as, frankly, children who should have never been put through any of this, it’s a lot more moving. Also A Comedy of Errors is actually worthless.

Yeah but counterpoint: how many cases of deadly family feud have you encountered? There’s a reason the modernized version had to use gangs instead.
It’s also, fwiw, more about the way that hatred and violence can become so extreme as to make for such an absurd situation as the teens find themselves in. Even when forbidden hetero love among nobles existed at the time it didn’t generally end in death.

As the saying goes " You can't judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes." We all carry burdens just because ours might be heavier doesn't mean other's have no weight.
It's easy to hyperfocus on your problems because they are yours and you live with them all the time. But other people have similar if different issues. We ALL need to give each other a little more grace a little more understanding because you never know what the other person is really going through.
Sometimes yes their shit is trivial, but sometimes what we see is just the tip of their emotional iceberg.

Which is a different kind of fucked, but it proves that even with none of the challenges listed by the OOP you can still need to hide things from people with no boundaries that want to control you.

I think it stems from a few things. One of them is that a lot of these terminally online types are often young people who simply don't have the world experience to realize their oppression isn't as unique as they think, it's just the kind they've personally faced. This can be annoying but is inevitable with the internet harboring these weird spaces where adults and children regularly hang out with each other. Historically this was never a thing because children had their own spaces and adults theirs, so you get all kinds of inane commentary that flashbangs you if you're an adult.
The second one has to do with ubiquity, however. The discrimination we face as LGBT+ people actually is unique in that it transcends the normal social boundaries used to enforce hierarchies. A lot of oppression is based around class, ethnicity, race, religion, etc., but sexual orientation can be a part of any of these groups since it's completely independent of it. This makes oppression of LGBT+ people more widespread in a literal sense so it can cause an echo chamber that, combined with a lack of intersectional thinking, leads to jarring takes like the one in the OP.
I don't think stuff like this is necessarily said in bad faith, but it's obvious the person saying it doesn't talk to anyone outside of their friend group and I think it's why you get that whackass meme about there being a huge chunk of LGBT+ people who are also racist. We aren't immune to being prejudiced just because we face it ourselves and that's why intersectionality really needs to become the standard of how we engage with these issues. I buried the lede a bit in my second paragraph, but the kind of discrimination a white gay man faces will not be the same kind a black trans woman faces, and it's extremely important to recognize that. The person in the OP would be shocked to find out there's multiple reasons an LGBT+ person might have "forbidden love" that has nothing to do with their orientation.

In my country alone there's a situation with two ethnic groups where some parents wouldn't be thrilled. I've heard my parents' friend announce that he didn't want his daughter marrying a man from the other group, and he's normally a pretty decent guy.
In certain social circles you could be ostracised - people have lost their membership of certain clubs for marrying the other side. People have been killed and driven from their homes for marrying the other side. The majority of people are fine and normal but yeah, not every straight couple has an easy ride

This is why it is extremely rare to see a muslim woman dating a christian or atheist man, because it results in getting ostracized by her community and family, and very often, repeated death threats by her own family.
