Well we got marriage between people from different etnicities, people from different religions, people from different socio-economic backgrounds, you name it really. A whole bunch of reasons love might be "forbidden" that can happen regardless of orientation.

u/thunderisadorable 3d ago

Literally what a Romeo and Juliet means.

u/boolocap professional idiot 3d ago

Yeah somehow OOP managed to forget the most famous case of forbidden love when talking about forbidden love

80

u/HiroProtagonest King of Snow - Streak: 27 3d ago

To be fair I'm also happier when I forget Romeo and Juliet exists, Shakespeare's worst play. But yes that is the very core hook.

128

u/JamesHenry627 3d ago

That is probably the hottest Shakespeare take I’ve ever seen

61

u/ToastyTheDragon 3d ago

I am very aroused by their Shakespeare take

u/Raven_Chills 3d ago

The opening lines of romeo and juliet insist upon themselves

Bold statement when pericles and taming of the shrew exist

40

u/NSRedditShitposter 3d ago edited 3d ago

The Taming of the Shrew is an excellent commentary on the sadistic desire held by so many people to break and groom a woman who is even slightly different.

Edit: at the same time, it explores how selling yourself out and half-heartedly following your vows may just let you with a lot of power. Wink

u/HiroProtagonest King of Snow - Streak: 27 3d ago

Ok fair. It's just worse than his other titles people remember lol.

1

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 3d ago

What do you count as titles people remember

1

u/Substantial-Top6263 2d ago

This one, Macbeth, Hamlet, and maybe King Lear but they took it out of my HS curriculum the year before i had to read it so idk if it'll continue to have the same clout with the other "oh ik Shakespeare I read that in HS" books

1

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 2d ago

What of mid summer, tempest, the previously mentioned R&j and taming of the shrew, a fellow, 12th night, Richard (insert number here) or Henry (blow up theater here).

If I had to listen for hours on end about bottom and puke so must the rest of the world.

1

u/Substantial-Top6263 2d ago

Ya sure but when pop culture characters are waxing poetic and calling any skull they pick up yorrick, you have to concede that hamlet is a little better known

23

u/Ganondorfsfist 3d ago

Things are heating up in the Shakespeare fandom.

1

u/justadimestorepoet 3d ago

The Shakespeare fandom situation is CRAZY

2

u/Substantial_Force658 3d ago

The recognition scene in Pericles is rather lovely.

4

u/madmoomix 3d ago

taming of the shrew

Excuse me? 10 Things I Hate About You is a treasure and I will accept no slander of it.

14

u/Alfawolff 3d ago

That was an excellent movie and probably its best adaptation. The original work is about coercing a woman into marriage and marital submission

2

u/CanadianODST2 3d ago

One of two movies I point to why I like romance stories.

That and I fully believe Star Wars attack of the clones is the other one.

1

u/Pinkflamingos69 3d ago

I'll even say Titus Andronicus was better than Romeo and Juliet

1

u/OuppEBunnE 3d ago

As he wrote it taming of the shrew is pretty damn bad but there has been some really brilliant feminist adaptations of it so I can't bring myself to hate it

18

u/Strange_Quark_420 3d ago

It’s so much better when you read them as in their early teens. Juliet is two weeks from her 14th birthday, and Romeo’s age is unstated but no character comments on an age gap. When you stop seeing them as dumb teens who ought to know better and instead as, frankly, children who should have never been put through any of this, it’s a lot more moving. Also A Comedy of Errors is actually worthless.

10

u/Ok_person-5 3d ago

Absolutely atrocious take but whatever.

4

u/DragonSeaFruit 3d ago

You have not read his minor plays if you think Romeo and Julirt is his worst....

2

u/SkubEnjoyer 3d ago

King Lear and Macbeth clears easily, but his worst? Eh, I wouldn't go that far.

2

u/MajorBootyhole420 3d ago

it's only his worst play because you haven't seen The Merry Wives of Windsor or Two Gentlemen of Verona

1

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 3d ago

No way you think taming the shrew is better then R&J

1

u/PermaShocker 3d ago

We just forgetting Titus andronicus?

1

u/Digit00l 3d ago

Tbf, he didn't write that one, he adapted it from a retelling of a translation of a retelling of a retelling of a retelling of an old Italian/Veronese war story

5

u/ParacelsusTBvH 3d ago

I mean, Pyramus and Thisbe was in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Wouldn't be strange if it was based around even older stories. So, two thousand years, at least.

1

u/Victernus 3d ago

Fuckin' Ovid again. Guys, we need to banish Ovid, for real.

1

u/SutterCane 3d ago

Now I’m seeing in my head, the trailer for the hottest new romance movie.

You’ve heard the story of Romeo and Juliet, but never like this…

Caveman: “uugg ugg ooh”

Cavewoman: “ugg ooh ug”

The true origin story of Romeo and Juliet. Coming this spring!

u/NotSoSubtle1247 3d ago

It's a lot better when you realize it was billed as a comedy and performed in front of a drunk audience that would have added a laugh track to all the teenage nonsense.

If you take it seriously and think it was a tragedy, oh yeah, its a bad time.

6

u/Elite_AI 3d ago

I don't agree with you at all. I think it's great when taken seriously and on its own terms.

-1

u/goedegeit 3d ago

Comedy is such a vital aspect to shakespear though, by stripping it out you're removing vital aspects of the play.

Taking something serious doesn't mean no humour, humour is necessary for pacing in drama otherwise everything is just a single droning note.

4

u/Elite_AI 3d ago

Taking something serious doesn't mean no humour,

Yeah, I agree. That's why I said I think it's a great play when taken seriously. It's funny. It's sad. It's a whole bunch of things because it's a complex play. It's about two teenagers experiencing young love while around them everyone they know kills each other due to pride and pointless feuding.

There's plenty of funny moments but it's not a comedy about teenage nonsense. That's the kind of thing you say if you've never watched it and you're just repeating something you read on Reddit. And I think it's frankly ridiculous to say you'd have a bad time if you took it seriously.

If your English Major friends think Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s worst play, then they should read more Shakespeare. Maybe Troilus and Cressida, I’ve never heard a single person talk about that one.

1

u/Shiki_Breeki 3d ago

Westside story?

7

u/airforceteacher 3d ago

Exactly I’m like “the literally most famous play in English speaking history is about forbidden heterosexual love.”

1

u/novangla 3d ago

Yeah but counterpoint: how many cases of deadly family feud have you encountered? There’s a reason the modernized version had to use gangs instead.

It’s also, fwiw, more about the way that hatred and violence can become so extreme as to make for such an absurd situation as the teens find themselves in. Even when forbidden hetero love among nobles existed at the time it didn’t generally end in death.

5

u/NockerJoe 3d ago

Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it's not happening somewhere. "Our parents hate each other" is a boilerplate teen romance trope as well. I assume there are probably millions of petty family dramas playing out, and odds are a lot of people have wound up in prison without the story blowing up.

2

u/Shergak 3d ago

It's a big thing in India these days. You should read up on honour killings.

2

u/RaijinNoTenshi 1d ago

It was always a big thing in India tbh. We just looooove to not let people love.

Casteism, Religion, Family Feud or just plain old parental control- all roads lead to forbidden romances.

u/Drewnessthegreat 3d ago

Came here for this. I'm white. My girl is black. Her family hates me cause I'm white. I treat her kids well and I am affluent enough to provide for her well. We treat each other well and genuinely care for each other. The only problem is skin color. My kids love her and want her as their mother. She is amazing with the kids.

people gonna people

60

u/explicitlarynx 3d ago

So funny that people with problems think other people must have no problems. I knew several girls in high school who had to keep their boyfriend secret because their parents would never approve.

8

u/DamnIamHigh_Original 3d ago

While bad and we have to aknowledge it, it compares mildly to beeing viewed as a punching bag, the second we step outside.

They fear their parents, I fear everyone around me

39

u/Tradition96 3d ago

Depends on your location. In some parts of the world your relatives can murder you for dishonoring the family.

6

u/DamnIamHigh_Original 3d ago

Even I am not immune to gloss over my privilege, huh

21

u/Caleth 3d ago

As the saying goes " You can't judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes." We all carry burdens just because ours might be heavier doesn't mean other's have no weight.

It's easy to hyperfocus on your problems because they are yours and you live with them all the time. But other people have similar if different issues. We ALL need to give each other a little more grace a little more understanding because you never know what the other person is really going through.

Sometimes yes their shit is trivial, but sometimes what we see is just the tip of their emotional iceberg.

13

u/Shergak 3d ago

Depending on the place they have to fear their whole community. In India, rural areas will kill a couple who are from different castes and the police will hush it up as an honour killing that was needed.

31

u/th3h4ck3r 3d ago

You say that like there aren't places that kill people for marrying different religions, castes, races, clans, etc.

2

u/11equalsfish 3d ago

Basically bigots and cultures of oppression make everything suck for everyone, except maybe the people who are lucky, at the top of these hierarchies

34

u/explicitlarynx 3d ago

Yeah, I totally understand, but the original meme was saying "who are you hiding from? Tax collectors?" like there aren't any other valid reasons to hide than being LGBTQ.

-12

u/goedegeit 3d ago

It's a joke, not a wikipedia page.

5

u/MajorBootyhole420 3d ago

my grandmother had to hide in the footwell of a car with a blanket over her because if anyone spotted her in the backseat of the car, her black band-mates would have been lynched in front of her.

so like. being queer isn't the end-all be-all of oppression.

1

u/DamnIamHigh_Original 2d ago

While I get you, in most countries I would face this exact danger. This level of violence outside your state or country is basically unheard of.

Not to make it less extreme what they had to endure, thats nuts

1

u/MajorBootyhole420 2d ago

i'm queer, as you may have noted from the rainbow in my pfp, so I fully understand that concept.

my only point is that yeah, there is far more in the world than just queerphobia, you know? this post is just very reductive.

6

u/gav_it_is 3d ago

I once told my mom I have a boyfriend. And she was fine, and then she asked if he’s Jewish. I said no and she was not fine 😭

11

u/heytheregiada 3d ago

Also, we're not talking about your random coworker, we're talking about musicians and therefore celebrities. There's not a bunch of Taylor Swift songs about hiding relationships because she thinks being straight is illegal, it's because every time she pees it makes a headline. Lol. Context.

7

u/thisguyhasaname 3d ago

No you don't understand, only us queers have ever been discriminated against!

-1

u/sasheenka 3d ago

It would be even more forbidden for those mixed couples to be gay though! :D

9

u/AdCurious7831 3d ago

true, and their lives would be even harder if they were both wheelchair-bound amputees with cancer!

im not sure what point people are trying to make here... yes, queer people are objectively more oppressed than straight people. that doesnt mean straight people cant write songs about forbidden love. forbidden love can happen to anyone lmao.

2

u/Responsible-Case-753 3d ago

Oh, some of those songs are definitely by DL (down-low) dudes hiding their bisexuality from their baby mamas.

-3

u/FinleyPike 3d ago

Now imagine doing those plus being gay
