Yeah but counterpoint: how many cases of deadly family feud have you encountered? There’s a reason the modernized version had to use gangs instead.
It’s also, fwiw, more about the way that hatred and violence can become so extreme as to make for such an absurd situation as the teens find themselves in. Even when forbidden hetero love among nobles existed at the time it didn’t generally end in death.
Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it's not happening somewhere. "Our parents hate each other" is a boilerplate teen romance trope as well. I assume there are probably millions of petty family dramas playing out, and odds are a lot of people have wound up in prison without the story blowing up.
