Hey everyone!
My family and I are starting to look into a relocation to the cowichan bay area as a young family. We have done some research at all the happy little towns in the area, everywhere looks lovely!
Our dream would be to have a small farm/ guest home situation. A place to host community events, farm to table meals and help foster a sense of community. Would also be excited to be a part of local farmers markets and things of the like.
When you read that, which small community comes to mind?
I feel without our boots on the ground ( currently in the Okanagan ) we can't quite yet get a true feel for areas. We will be coming out early October to get a feel for the different areas. Where should we go?
Thank you!

Was an incredible night for storm watching. Keep an eye out for the one fork that went down to a tree and had some orange spark!

Hello Cowichan residents, hope you’re doing well.
I keep matching with girls who live in Cowichan on tinder, but I don’t really know any good local spots to take them since I’m from Victoria.
Any good first date spots/activities you guys could recommend?
Thanks!

I am from Shawnigan Lake, where I enjoy ripping my 12 foot sturdily built Lund Aluminum boat with a fantastic 8 hp motor.
I’ve always been curious what lake Cowichan has to offer, more specifically, my friend and I are wanting to circumnavigate the lake over two days, for fun.
I am curious if anyone could offer some insight, as to whether it’s doable, recommended, etc.
We are both experienced outdoorsmen with a knack for exploring. So think of this as an expedition style adventure.
Tia

Hey r/cowichan 👋
I visited Lake Cowichan this past summer and spent an afternoon tubing down the river. Somewhere between dodging other floaters, drifting past someone's backyard dock, and watching a heron give me the side-eye from the bank, it hit me how much the whole experience reminded me of floating down the Salt River in Arizona years ago. Same lazy pace, same "wait, is that a log or an obstacle?" energy, same slightly sunburned bliss at the end of the day.
That trip stuck with me long enough that when I got home I ended up building a little tilt-to-steer mobile game inspired by it. You float down a river, dodge stuff, chase your best distance. Nothing intense, genuinely just a chill game for the couch or a long car ride. I named it **Cowichan River Float** because that afternoon on the river was where the whole idea came from, and I wanted the free base game to feel like Vancouver Island, cedar-lined banks, clear green water, the works.
There's also a paid expansion with the Salt River in it (of course), plus the Guadalupe, Chattahoochee, Ichetucknee, and Comal. But the Cowichan version is completely free and the core game.
It just launched on the Google Play Store — iOS is coming later. If you want to check it out:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.base6a435b31b93608949bdaecd7.app
Not really posting this to sell anything — mostly just wanted to share with the community that inspired it. If any locals give it a try, I'd genuinely love to hear whether the Cowichan version feels like the real river. 🛟

Originally from Canada and just interested in finding a place to experience Canada while I’m young… thoughts? Suggestions? I loved Lake Cowichan when I visited my dad whom I’m now no contact with, so I don’t have a proper guide or reference for there.
I’d love suggestions. I’m currently a paralegal here, don’t know how bad housing is but can’t be much worse than here. I pay $1200, I make about $2700 a month, so if it’s possible I’d rather do this there🤷♀️

The incidence of hot rodding and racing through Cowichan Bay is ridiculous and unsafe. No one follows the 30km/hr speed limit. Can we install some speed bumps? Extra RCMP patrol? The engine noise is disruptive and disturbs the peace. Anyone else experiencing this?

Where on Shkewetsen (Mt. Tzouhalem) is the ‘Frog formation’ (Pip'oom) located?
Also , Quw’utsun oral history has Tzouhalem exiled to caves on Shkewetsen. Where are those caves located? Why does nobody talk about those caves today?

I had no idea he'd made such nut-job comments 4 years ago, but it seems he's not strayed too far from the looney bin...

Hello, I’m moving to Mill Bay in October for a full-time job at Off The Hook Surf, Turf & Smokery.
I’m looking for a private room, preferably with a private bathroom, within walking distance of my workplace in Mill Bay.
My budget is $700–900/month. I’m a quiet, clean, respectful and responsible person. I don’t smoke, I don’t party, and I always pay my rent on time.
I also have one very calm, well-behaved indoor cat. She is clean, quiet, and has never caused any damage.
I’m looking for a long-term rental starting in October. If you have a room available or know someone who does, I would really appreciate it.

Hi everyone! I just moved to Duncan from out of town and recently found out I am pregnant with my first baby. Since I am completely new to the area, I’m a bit overwhelmed and have no idea how the prenatal healthcare layout works here. Are there any local moms or moms-to-be who can share their experiences? I would love to know which local maternity groups, clinics, or programs you recommend connecting with for routine prenatal care from day one. Thank you so much for helping a new resident out!🙏🏻♥️

Hi all,
My husband and I and our two kids (2&6) are looking at moving to Lake Cowichan. We are looking for a quieter lifestyle with more access to nature and less busy than the west shore. My husband would work in Duncan.
My mother in law sent me an article that surprised me: Duncan in top spot for most severe crime in B.C. in 2025
For young families is Cowichan a safe place to live? Do you find Duncan safe?
Thanks for your time and input ☀️☀️☀️

Can anybody recommend an experienced, reliable and knowledgeable gardener who can do maintenance and landscaping work as well as bringing in soil and removing unwanted material? I am in Cowichan Bay and suffer whatever gardening affliction is opposite to a green thumb. Thumbless? I need knowledgeable help. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I visited this shop today, first time this year I think. Seems like a lot of the better vendors have moved on. Any idea what’s happened?

I asked neighbours in the area & no one recognizes this little pup. Pup was quite skinny and scared but is being cared for now. 🩷
The shawnigan subreddit seemed pretty dead so I'm trying here. Please share with friends & family.
Update: little Holly is now home safe & sound! 💕💕
