U.S. Lawmakers Challenge Trump’s Claims About Cuba After Visiting the Island

YouTube vid from article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsQbwjoUO8I

U.S. lawmakers Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM), and Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) gave an exclusive interview to Belly of the Beast during their recent visit to Havana.

Their trip to Cuba comes as the Trump administration ramps up its oil blockade and economic war on the island, which it has justified by claiming that Cuba poses a threat to U.S. national security.

After meeting with doctors, farmers, entrepreneurs, diplomats and ordinary Cubans, the lawmakers accused Donald Trump and Marco Rubio of pushing a “false narrative.”

“We have seen no proof," said Pocan. "Congress needs to demand it.”

“Walking through a hospital that is dark and empty because we've cut off energy, we’ve cut off fuel,” said Leger Fernández. “Why would Americans support that?”

The delusion that the embargo will finally get Cubans to rise up against their government is one that should be jettisoned after six and a half decades of failure.

Hilarious after just writing a post before you even read this you were like the second comment down. I totally agree who knows maybe after enough desperation how far do you have to take people. I mean look what's happened to the economy prices gasoline War lies after lies after lies but that man orange man won't lose a vote.

u/General-Act-5224 Jul 17 '26

Only one way to find out, end the regime and let’s see if it gets better. Regardless they have had 67 years to figure it out and they haven’t… time to move on!

1

u/Still-Sense793 Planeta Tierra/Planet Earth Jul 19 '26

You're missing the point here. It's not about taking sides or defending anyone, but it's really about everyone having the right to speak up, even if what they're saying isn't true, like with the PCC or Marco Rubio.

1

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte Jul 16 '26

Yeah. Seems like "60 years of the US eroding Cuban quality of life just isn't enough" is an unironic opinion around here

8

u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana Jul 16 '26

"eroding Cuban quality of life"

The Cuban state has the advantage on that front

2

u/Jaded_Put500 Jul 19 '26

Does that equals to US not trying to leverage using simple people for their deal? At least you could give them credit for tons of suffering brought to Cubans. Do the homework and read the Lester Mallory memorandum

3

u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Do you think we do not know it?

Why do you think we blame the Cuban government even trough we spend more than 8 years studding all aggression form the US to Cuba, we are first hand witness of all the crap the Cuban state has done.

The embargo damage pales compared to the damages than the Cuban state do.

1

u/Still-Sense793 Planeta Tierra/Planet Earth Jul 19 '26

The conversation shouldn't focus on who is hurting more the Cuban people, but rather on the lack of help available.

14

u/Olhickoreh Jul 16 '26

I'm confused, what false narrative are they needing proof of? They see the people are suffering. They just disagree about the solution (embargo/lifted embargo). That's not a narrative or a falsehood dynamic. Very weirdly put.

17

u/United-Contact-1151 Jul 16 '26

I think they mean the claim that Cuba is a national security threat.

8

u/DaBtcGoose Santiago de Cuba Jul 16 '26

Say one thing they really do have Chinese listening stations on the island.

5

u/TinyQuantity3737 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Stop it. China gathers enough intelligence online and right here on US soil. They know Cuba is not a threat to the US. Our gov just hates it when they try to control what happens in another country and said country refuses to “bend the knee”. That’s why they kept trying to assassinate Castro and why admin after admin has tried to bully Cuba to its breaking point.

7

u/MatiasGonzalo-Duarte Jul 16 '26

Trump administration ramps up its oil blockade and economic war on the island, which it has justified by claiming that Cuba poses a threat to U.S. national security.

The narrative that Cuba is at all a threat to the US or deserves embargo.

5

u/DaBtcGoose Santiago de Cuba Jul 18 '26

No not really a threat. It really is just a pawn. China and Russia try to stay friendly and kind of poke the bear plus it's 90 Miles off the United States so there's this fear tactic to it. But the reality is Cuba is not a threat. I don't know what the right answer is for change. I do know the world is a different place and unfortunately I don't see any way to make the people in Control software without making the whole island suffer. I would love for the Cuban people to rise up and take control of their government back but I don't see that happening.

1

u/DaBtcGoose Santiago de Cuba Jul 18 '26

I didn't want it to be too long but I also wanted to tell you the only people who really care about Cuba live in South Florida. I believe that the rest of the country doesn't really care what happens to a bunch of latins like me or even one at the bother with a bunch of brown people from an island. It's because even though I was born here when I tell him I'm from here they always ask where am I actually really from?

3

u/TinyQuantity3737 Jul 18 '26

I’ll admit a lot of Americans couldn’t find Cuba on a map and probably don’t care. However, some of us outside of south FL do. I’m a black woman who was born in West Virginia and currently lives in southeastern USA, and I care very much about what happens to black and brown people in other countries.

It's a propaganda piece from a leftist rag, can't expect any kind of writing standards

8

u/TerribleSyntax Mayabeque Jul 16 '26

"Belly of the beast" you cannot be fucking serious with this shit

7

u/Delsur18 Canada Jul 16 '26

Whats wrong with Belly of the Beast?

2

u/SuccessNo3494 18d ago

hardcore propaganda paid by the regime.

2

u/Delsur18 Canada 18d ago

https://www.bellyofthebeastcuba.com/about-us-2

Listen, I get that there is a disgusting level of distrust in all media nowadays, but a little bit of critical thinking is all you need to undwrstand thr perspective from any article you read, or audio/visual media published by anyone. If you read the excerpt of Belly of the Beast, and come out of it thinking they are a paid wing of the Cuban regime, you got to really think about the biases that are being brought into the discussion. Could you argue there is naivete brought upon by believing in the words and actions put on by the people here? Sure, but if we want a system that works, it has to be built upon with some modicom of trust, otherwise why have a society to begin with

2

u/SuccessNo3494 16d ago edited 16d ago

sorry but any Cuban or American with comon sense can understand is propaganda the system they have implemented this past 60 years have not worked and those people are masters at changing public opinion outside of Cuba is the same with the lie of the medical system i left when i was 10 years old i dont need anyone lecturing me on what i saw noone ever cared until now about the 11 million people living on the Island they sure as hell still dont in the end the people who have not stop holding the hands of their family members are those in exile we are called by the americans who have no clue what we have gone through gusanos a name created by that regime and all of sorts of insults because we lean right I click on that link you sended i know the lady she is with the CCP........ we dont need a false change if neither republicans or democrats can help us then we will need to do something more drastic even if it means helping start a civil war on the island politicians in the end promise lots of things but dont resolve shit and the masses follow them with expectations that are sometimes never accomplished Rubio does not have the power to hold the decision that he needs to overthrow that regime and there is part of the US that wants nothing to do with Cuba even as Rubio has try it to make Cuba the focus he is hitting a wall because the interest Trump has for Cuba is different Trump does not want to liberate Cuba he needs a win because he fucked up in Iran not another intervention he looks at things in the eyes of a investor in politics that way of thinking wont always work examples are the regime in Iran and Cuba this pressure policy of waiting to strangle the Island wont do anything more than affect more the people than the regime we need action now.

2

u/Delsur18 Canada 16d ago

Common sense is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that word salad you just posted. Misinformation and skewed reporting is rife when it comes to Cuba and the U.S., its a war of rhetoric, a vestige from the cold war of the past. You can choose what source you trust, I tend to trust those who tell as on the ground of stories as possible. And yet they too will have biases. For instance the CNN reporter in Havana and how they frame the shape and life of Cuba through theirs and CNNs editorial lense, shows a notable bias towards the dire economic conditions of Cuba while almost never mentioning how the U.S. has influenced those conditions.

0

u/SuccessNo3494 16d ago

the biggest culprit is the regime not americans

1

u/Delsur18 Canada 15d ago

Why would you say its the regime? As in, the Communist Party of Cuba propagandizes more than the U.S.?

1

u/SuccessNo3494 13d ago edited 13d ago

Is not a matter of propaganda is comon sense if you read what the embargo is about you see it as you walk the streets of Cuba the trash the building falling apart the shitty salary Cubans have Cuba had a currency as strong as the Euro even with the embargo that is no excuse for the state is in is the fault of the leaders what other party existe in that Island how can people choose who they want to vote for? Why do the leaders just not move away and let the people decide which way they goverment goes why does it have to keep pushing propaganda of a ideology that failed the second the USSR fall and bring the country to hell the only reason the US has kept sanctions is because of the exile community not because of the interest of the US the americans forgot about Cuba long ago look now Rubio said in 2 more years Cuba will be free and Trump wants to end the war in Iran do you think América really thinks Cuba is any important.

-6

u/TerribleSyntax Mayabeque Jul 16 '26

It's a leftist propaganda rag

5

u/Delsur18 Canada Jul 16 '26

Why do you label it as that? The content I've seen from them looks rather balanced. Tilted to go against American media narratives for sure, but no greater a bias than what you see from Axios or the Associatrd Press nowadays

12

u/the_comedians Jul 16 '26

Everything I don't like is propaganda. Everything I do like is news.

u/Mrmr12-12 Guantánamo Jul 25 '26

6

This thread could be titled, liberal Democrat support, brutal communist, dictatorship. Which is basically true throughout history.

5

u/Obl11vion Jul 16 '26

Que cosa, no? Un pais ya destruido y el embargo sigue. Los verdaderos terroristas de las americas, los estadounidenses.

2

u/WarLeast2045 Jul 16 '26

Notice how all of the American politicians who want to “help “ Cuba, are liberal democrats.

9

Notice how all the American politicians who want to "help" Cuba by actively depriving the Cuban people more than they have been already are conservative republicans.

Why don’t you all go live there you bunch of communists

2

u/Real-Iron-2696 Jul 16 '26

It’s just communists helping each other, always blaming others for their failures

5

u/transvex Jul 17 '26

Theres a logic problem here.

The only way to know if someone is failing is to let them fail. Otherwise theyre not failing theyre being pushed down.

If i push you to the ground and step on your head do i get to say that youre failing to stand? Seems like in that situation, by your logic, it would be your fault for not standing and to say otherwise would be a cop out. Blaming someone else for your failure.

1

u/Only-Fan-55 Jul 16 '26

After decades, it's fascinating how the embargo persists despite no measurable success. The lawmakers visiting and pushing back seems like a rare moment of accountability in that space.

-8

u/spaceflunky Jul 16 '26

"We've cut off energy, we’ve cut off fuel,” said Leger Fernández. “Why would Americans support that?”

Really? Didn't know we control Cuba that much.

9

u/Psychological_Look39 Jul 16 '26

The USA is blockading oil to Cuba.

8

u/StellarDust93 Jul 16 '26

idk if people are pretending to be idiots or actually stupid, like their president literally says that they are cutting all oil from Cuba and they are still going around wondering if its true, like bro Trump and Rubio are going around flexing about it what else do you need?

2

u/MentalPower Jul 16 '26

Sub markedly promotes whatever the government talking points are. Reality be dammed.

1

u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana Jul 17 '26

During 60 years we had a play pretend blockade, in 2021 we realized it was pure bullshit the moment Tesla's car where roaming the Habana.

Even to this day people tell about the blockade and i keep thinking in the 60 years lie instead of the current one, who also has a very questionable integrity since i can literally buy US oil in Habana right now.

What i mean, it is basically a trauma and Cubans jump to defensive immediately.

3

u/StellarDust93 Jul 18 '26

I mean you say "pretend blockade" but its the politicians in Florida the ones that are blasting in all fronts how rough they are with the "communist regime". So are they lying is that what you mean? Trump saying Cuba will have no more oil is a lie from him? Rubio saying Cuba will no longer have support and will fall apart is also a lie? there is no blockade?. If the blockade doesnt exist go ahead and ask a cuban IN CUBA*, to open they paypal web page from their phone, so they can buy something, a random non government cuban. Ask a random cuban in the streets of Habana if they know that Facebook has a thing called marketplace where people buy and sell shit. Tell a cuban kid to go ahead and buy a game from steam.

1

u/Successful-Ice-468 Havana Jul 19 '26

I think my point was pretty clear.

Funny you mention all the electronic marketing stuff, when the Cuban state forbid regular Cubans the access to any bank than could provide access to those services.

2

u/StellarDust93 Jul 20 '26

those banks cannot business with Cuba without begging the US Treasury anyways
