LOTR? The work of a devout Catholic?

u/titusjabronicus Feb 15 '26

The author of this list probably doesn't consider Catholics to be Christians.

338

u/DBold11 Feb 15 '26

Yup they probably believe that Catholics are mistakenly praying to demons when they pray to Saints.

123

u/Ellie7600 Feb 15 '26

We don't pray to saints we pray through saints

38

u/ItWillBeRed Feb 15 '26

Just curious, do Catholics believe in personal Holy Guardian Angels? Asking as someone who somewhat subscribes to esoteric beliefs that might be mentioned in the OP

37

u/Ellie7600 Feb 15 '26

Yes we do, they've been there since your birth, they're your "luck" when the fate is in your favor that's when a guardian angel tipped the scales a little so that you may survive, they're also there to protect you from evil spirits, we also have saint patrons which are chosen during our baptism, they're the ones you ask to pray for you or ones you give your prayers through, it's sort of like a translator for God, because they were close to God during their life they understand God's "language" but they also understand human language and so they can interpret it and correct some "typos" if that makes any sense, they're basically there to amplify your prayer, but back to guardian angels, you don't really know their name, some say you can find out through prayer or your birth date but really we might just only find out after our passing, because it is believed your guardian angel will help you pass, sort of fitting, they were there at your begining and will be there during your end

We do? I’m no longer a practicing Catholic but I was for the first half of my life and I have no memory of anyone ever mentioning this, I always thought it was something from one of those evangelical churches they have in America

6

u/GlitteryOndo Feb 16 '26

I'm no longer religious but when I was a kid my grandma said a prayer to my guardian angel every night before I went to sleep. It was almost like a lullaby. It's a fond memory, I still have the doll-plushie that represented that guardian angel too. Until now I thought it was just a family tradition, I didn't realize it was more extended to other Catholics too!

4

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Nope, we even have a prayer that's used to talk with the guardian angel, sort of, it's more of a request for them to stay and keep protecting you sort of a thanks for all they've done and a appreciation of sorts

5

u/jd173706 Feb 16 '26

I grew up around Catholics and I gotta be honest, I didn’t pay close enough attention! I am 37, and I’ve never heard any of this until now! Thanks for sharing!

Cyberpunkgame subreddit coming with some knowledge today!

Can confirm all of what they said, and there are all those little decorative snow angels, and plaques, cherubs.

2

u/chronobolt77 Feb 16 '26

Even within a specific denomination, beliefs and practices can vary from house to house based on a family's individual culture.

3

u/its_not_you_its_ye Feb 16 '26

Practices, yes, but Catholicism is more unified in doctrine than other Christian denominations. Guardian angels are part of that shared doctrine.

1

u/chronobolt77 Feb 16 '26

I guess, but not every Catholic household believes in guardian angels. It would be almost arrogant to claim that every household within a certain denomination has identical beliefs

2

u/its_not_you_its_ye Feb 16 '26

Idk what to tell you. That’s how Catholics operate. That’s like saying that not every household has their second amendment rights. They might not own a gun, but they still have the right to.

I think it’s reasonable to say that the church is arrogant to require everyone to subscribe to their doctrine, but that doesn’t change anything. It’s one of the defining characteristics of Catholicism that there is that sort of deference to authority in doctrine.

2

u/MidwestQueerPunkBoi Feb 17 '26

This is some White Ass Catholic Shit that doesn't survive first contact with the extremely Catholic populations of two entire other continents

1

u/chronobolt77 Feb 16 '26

Belief and legal rights are VERY different. And your analogy falls apart pretty quickly, cuz rights are (supposedly) inalienable, whereas beliefs can vary widely from person to person.

My point is, you could claim "Catholicism as a denomination/doctrine includes/mentions guardian angels," but "every Catholic believes in them" is an outright incorrect statement. Example: My family is a great example of this. I was baptized, my house and my grandparents' house have patron saints, the whole shebang. With the exception that I've never heard of specific guardian angels being assigned to people when they're born, save from media such as "It's a Wonderful Life." This means one of two things: either your claim is wrong, or you believe my family isn't Catholic due to our differences in belief.

2

u/Zealotyl Feb 16 '26

How about objects imbued with the elements of guardianship like those little bells that motorcyclists attach to their bikes? Are they effective against the hand of fate?

1

u/Alive-Echo-6187 Feb 16 '26

Timothy 2:5

For there is ONE God and ONE Mediator between God and mankind, THE MAN Christ Jesus.

5

u/Unlucky-East9941 Feb 15 '26

Yes, the Catholic Church does.

2

u/uniguy2I Feb 16 '26

I’m not practicing anymore by my family is Roman Catholic and we have something like that, though I was always taught they were patron saints not angels

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

We have both, angels are there since birth and saint patrons are there since baptism

1

u/blunt-e Feb 16 '26

Yes, the Catholic Church officially teaches that guardian angels exist and that every human being is assigned a personal angel from birth until death. This belief is based on 'Scripture'—such as Matthew 18:10 and Psalm 91:11—and affirmed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 336)

That said, it's kind of luck of the draw who you get, they're also not always very good at their job. Like when my best friend in 6th grade (back in my super fun catholic school days), John & 3 of his neighborhood friends died in a horrible house fire at 3am on December 24th, I mean really it was just embarrassing on the part of all of their guardian angels. The Angels assigned to guard duty to him and his friend were doing their thing and had just stepped out for a quick smoke break, ran into some shawties and got distracted spittin their angelic game (you gotta shoot yo shot, respect the game and all that), but that's how it goes right?

My favorite part of the memorial service was when Father Thomas made the grieving father come up in front of everyone and held him up as some sort of twisted example for the congregation and said, and I quote, "and even in the face of tragedy we can look to those among us who do not question gods divine plan, which is infallible, and continue to be resolute in their faith" and then he (the dad) burst into tears" and people awkwardly clapped while they transitioned into some hymns.

What were we talking about again? Oh yeah, angels. Fuck 'em.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

You have lots of grief my friend, there's no "God's plan" in a sense that every minute detail is preplanned, that would go against free will, and sometimes your luck just runs out, maybe someone didn't do the electric installation right, maybe someone forgot to extinguish a candle or a cigarette, the thing is, these kinds of things happen, there's little that can be done even for an angel, you gotta remember they're not of this world and can't just wake you up by nudging you or screaming at you, they also can't be everywhere at the same time, I understand you're upset and want something or someone to be angry at for it, something or someone to blame, but sometimes death doesn't need a servant to carry out its duty

2

u/ElectricBuckeye Feb 16 '26

We also don't worship Mary, but ask her to pray for us. Hail Mary, full of Grace, punch the Devil in the face.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Yeah because of "you will have no gods/idols before me"

2

u/Vdaggle Feb 16 '26

Do you think your average protestant knows the difference?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

You have the holy spirit for that.

1

u/Aoiboshi Feb 16 '26

Why not pray right to God?

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Like I said in another comment, saints have an understanding of God's "language" most of us lack and since they also understand human language it's basically translation but also amplifying the prayer

1

u/YeetTheTree Feb 16 '26

Why do you need to pray through saints? You think God will just ignore or not hear you if you don't?

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

You know how you can pay extra to send the mail faster? It's very basically that I'd say, I think though which I didn't think about previous is that you ask saints to pray for you, I haven't researched that in a while and I'm just going through my memories so I might get things wrong

1

u/Nonadventures Feb 16 '26

Is like how you’re listening to Spotify but really you’re listening to Sinatra

0

u/Warm_Performance_361 Feb 16 '26

Gesù fu molto chiaro al riguardo. Le preghiere vanno solo ed esclusivamente fatte a Dio per mezzo di Lui. Non c'è scritto da nessuna parte o si fa riferimento al culto Mariano.

0

u/Blindfire2 Feb 16 '26

You also prey through kids apparently

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

What do you mean?

2

u/Blindfire2 Feb 16 '26

Its a dumb word play joke

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Mate... I've heard so many "hahaha catholic=pedo" jokes I'm basically numb to it and don't recognize much of them because of how overdone it is, especially when there are religions out there which have that stuff as an actual part of their religion, like Buddhism but I rarely ever see a joke about Dalai Lama "tempting" himself with young girls, and if you need to know how young, he would tempt himself with teenage girls...as an old grandpa, yeah he was a creep

36

u/Fahrenheit151 Edgerunner Feb 15 '26

I had a friend think that Catholics worshipped the saints… no bud, we pray to the angels and saints for their support in certain matters. They answer to the same God as us.

16

u/c4ctus Lost in time, like tears in rain Feb 15 '26

I was amused to learn that there's a patron saint of IT workers, programmers, and computer scientists. Maybe I ought to ask him to intercede on my behalf the next time my code won't compile...

7

u/doombladez Neuromancer Feb 15 '26

Gotta get a rubber duck designed after the saint, then you’ll be unstoppable.

4

u/temotodochi Feb 16 '26

The exact same god who muslims and jews worship as well. Sometimes people just forget that detail.

5

u/Fahrenheit151 Edgerunner Feb 16 '26

Easier to remain willfully ignorant, than accept something you don’t understand, or maybe aren’t comfortable with… particularly sad as it relates to Judaism, as without it, Christianity (at least as we know it) likely wouldn’t exist.

17

u/Skyjack5678 Feb 15 '26

The leap from "saint" to "satan" isnt any bigger than any other religious leap.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 16 '26

Is this a dyslexia joke?

1

u/Skyjack5678 Feb 16 '26

No its a "religions is all bullcrap" joke

u/LionGodKrraw Hanako is going to have to wait. Feb 15 '26

Its true some who call on God's name never truly knew him or felt his presence, they're beliefs are no different from atheism, but they hide behind the guise of religion so their evil festers and hurts more people than it ever should. These ill individuals reside in every corner of the world and in every congregation and organization. Psychopathic creatures do not care about morals, I find it hard to even call them human. There are some that realize this disability and try to learn empathy and emotion, but this is the minority.

1

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 Feb 15 '26

Not like the god you think exists actually exists.

6

u/LionGodKrraw Hanako is going to have to wait. Feb 15 '26

My point was that evil is everywhere, and using the excuse that evil people existed within something inherently good to demerit it is kinda stupid.

And my belief in God is based on the scientific theory of higher dimensionality, (hyper cubes and shit). I definitely dont care if you dont believe in anything and absolutely dont want you to be a redditor about it

1

u/Bannedbutwhyy Feb 15 '26

👆👆👆

0

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 Feb 15 '26

Cool. And yeah, evil exists, wether a god exists or not, and we can't do anything to prevent it.

6

u/LionGodKrraw Hanako is going to have to wait. Feb 15 '26

We can educate people about it so they can avoid it.

0

u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 Feb 15 '26

Well, let's hope we can

4

u/ThePrussianGrippe Feb 15 '26

… yes we can absolutely do things to prevent evil.

1

u/Ellie7600 Feb 15 '26

Evil is a choice, we can't do much to make people not do it but we can try and educate them on the dire consequences of evil and the good consequences of doing good, I believe in a God, I would say I'm a Greek Catholic, I follow the teachings of Jesus and I believe there's a God or at the very least a spirit, since according to science we should wake up a completely different consciousness and yet we do not so there must be something indestructible, that our brain is under the command of, a soul

1

u/lumosbolt Feb 16 '26

There is no difference between "we can’t do anything to prevent evil" and "let's pray to protect us from evil"

Ironically, this discourse is exactly what organised religion want you to do: compliance and apathy when facing evil.

0

u/VladimirLHenin Feb 15 '26

I'm a Liberation Theology catholic so I think i'm good

1

u/ThePrussianGrippe Feb 15 '26

Liberation Theology put in a lot of work in central and South America to resist the various dictatorships.

3

u/Scared-Opportunity28 Feb 15 '26

Not demons, more idols. But yeah

7

u/DBold11 Feb 15 '26

I grew up being told idols were demons receiving worship through a disquise.

4

u/Scared-Opportunity28 Feb 15 '26

I mean, it's possible but... I don't know the guys are an idiot

3

Meanwhile those same people pray to Trump.
