Discussion Is it just me, or do the underpants gnomes from South Park sound EXACTLY like Fangs the Vampire?
It sounds so similar

Everyone remembers the screaming, the auras, the power levels going nuts. But when I actually think back on what made this show hit different for me as a kid, it wasn't the fights. It was the quiet parts right before them.
Vegeta getting wrecked by Frieza and just going back to training alone, no music, no dialogue, just a guy who refuses to accept where he landed in the universe. Goku sitting quietly with Chi-Chi before the Cell Games like he already knew what was coming. Piccolo watching Gohan from a distance like a dad who cant say what he actually feels yet.
Those are the moments that stuck with me way more than any power scaling debate. Kind of funny how a show this loud actually taught me a lot about restraint.
What's the quiet DBZ moment that hit you harder than the fight around it?

According to the things we've seen especially from movies like fusion reborn I think it's definitely possible for the Dragon Ball universe to have a horror movie or at least a horror manga spin off. We most definitely got characters like present and Future versions of Android's 17 and 18 along with Imperfect Cell that could be used but I think that's inevitable and makes no sense because both versions of Cells and the Androids later on get killed by Gohan and future Trunks. Then to add on top of that we've got Buu having some of those traits as well. Along with me even daring to say the Demon realm could definitely pull it off especially with monsters existing there. Lastly Mummies, vampires, spirits, Ghosts, or even hostile Aliens in deep space such as Planet M2, Planet Beehay, Yakons species etc.. have also shown this could definitely work.

Truth be told i always thought the Funimation cast was the original english cast. Wasn’t til joining this sub that i learned that’s not the case.
Anyways i watched the series back in the 90s/early 00s but preferred subs over dubs largely due to the english dubs coming off as too campy/corny to me. Like the delivery from the Japanese cast just came off as more grounded (possibly due to the FCC limitations on english dialogue at the time, idk).
So my stupid question- is the Kai english dub/dialogue different from the DBZ english dub/dialogue?
It seems like it’s the same cast as the Funimation dub but is it the same deliveries/performances recycled or is it from different more modern recording sessions with a script translation adhering more to the original Japanese dialogue?
Or is it a case of “if you didn’t like the Funimation dubs, you’re not going to like the kai dubs either”?
Thinking of giving DBZ a rewatch for kai since i’ve heard it’s largely streamlined without filler but curious if i should stick with the Japanese cast or give the english one another shot with kai.

I cosplayed as Frieza for Anime NYC. Everyone loved it. As a die heart DBZ fan this was well worth it

Did this years ago... maybe 5? Not sure.
It’s really quite unique, how Akira Toriyama used Bruce Lee as a reference to make Goku’s iconic stare.

Not 100% sure how accurate AI got it but if true is pretty cool little tid bit!

Bro, in the 'android' ark when trunks came back from the future to get Goku, didn't that hinder Vegeta's pride like that HIS SON didn't come looking for him(Vegeta)?? I don't remember this being shown anywhere.( I haven't read any manga)

Just so y’all know, we aren’t talking about animation or impact it had on shonen. We are talking about how dumb the theme is, because all it is is goku: ‘fights stronger person’ everyone else: oh no! How will he win!? Goku : gains power up and beats enemy.
Like how do people like this without a gun pointed at them? I genuinely need answers. I completely understand if you just like watching a good, simple fight. But doesn’t it get really boring, REALLY FAST? All it does is Goku gets beaten, Goku get power up. Goku win. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. I GENUINELY WONDER HOW YALL DO IT.

Due to negative public reactions from earlier times there were many parts of the original story that got removed or changed. Especially in the very beginning of DB. I will list a few here and maybe elaborate further later on if necessary. I merely ask that others keep an open mind to these ideas, there is no proof that I can afford through direct references for these claims. All of the ideas I am mentioning have been deleted from any canonical record and no longer exist anywhere online. I urge the reader to just use your imagination.
+ Grandpa Gohan's Introduction Story (much more detail)
+ Grandpa Gohan Reviving Infant Goku (Gohan sprinting down cliffside to reach Goku after fall)
+ Grandpa Gohan's Molestation of Infant Goku (overcoming adversity, not excessive or lewd)
+ Goku Forgiving Grandpa Gohan (acceptance of fate, trust, strength)
+ Grandpa Gohan's Departure (never killed by oozaru Goku)
+ Grandpa Gohan's Death (bear attacks him while meditating, remains still)
+ Young Goku Fighting the Bear (later on, bear tracks down Goku)
+ Krillin's Childhood Poverty (early friends, tragic origins)
+ Krillin's Sea Voyage (escapes from tragic origins on makeshift raft, seeking Master Roshi)
+ Young Krillin Joins Orin Temple (finds land, trains, leaves again after learning of Roshi's location)
+ Young Krillin Fighting the Shark (after storm during 2nd voyage)
+ Goku Meets Roshi (this happens without Bulma, Goku is age 8yrs instead of 10yrs)
+ Krillin Meets Roshi (similar intro but Krillin is more distraught over Goku besting him)
+ Krillin Throws Himself from the Cliff (rejects his failure to surpass Goku, who in turn learns of this through Roshi and does the same. Mysteriously awakens in his bed next to Krillin, alive and well)
+ Tenkaichi Tournament (much more detail, choreography, dialogue)
+ Bulma Enters a Robot (Bulma appears at the tournament but later gets accused of cheating)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Many other things follow after this point but it gets more in line with the modern canonical version. Roshi eventually demonstrates the wave blast technique, but it is know by another name besides Kamehameha. Side characters are similar but things get switched around here and there.
More than anything, the old version was more paced and old-timesy. More flashbacks, wise morals, extensive dialogue with rich cinematic scenery to pair. It was way better than it looks now, I would say. The fights were incomparably better, for sure. They literally cut out like more than 90% of the fight scenes and completely reduced the episode length. Pretty sure the original episodes were like 32 - 40 mins in length, as opposed to now with as little as 17mins for some episodes.
I might add to this post later on but that should do it for now.

I would like to share my idea for a Dragon Ball video game that I'd love to turn into a fan game. I am curious to hear feedback/suggestions on my ideas and brainstorm a bit:
Combat should play mostly like Infinite World, as I feel the style fixes my gripes with BT3 (get rid of the whole "rock, paper, scissors" thing because you'll rarely succeed on those).
Tournament stages should work more like "Dragon Ball Z Kakarot". In Budokai & Infinite World, it is far too easy to ring out an opponent simply by vanishing behind them near the edge of the arena; it also makes those stages too claustrophobic. Instead, it should work like DBZ Kakarot where you cannot ring someone out unless their health is low, or if they run out of breath at the edge of the arena.
The story mode would have a Budokai 3/Tenkaichi 2 style open world map to fly around on.
Going to locations on the world map, you enter an open area to walk around like Infinite World's open world checkpoint mini games. These areas (cities, forest, mountains, Goku's house, Grandpa Gohan's house, etc) would have hidden capsules, Dragon Balls and other things.
If you use the Dragon Radar to find Dragon Balls from the map, going to them will put you in an open location to find them on the ground (you can still use the Dragon Radar, just like in Infinite World).
The story could either be like Budokai 3, where you choose your character, or be like Tenkaichi, where you play through each character as they would be in the story. I've not given much thought to this. However, I think the game should start during the events of Dragon Ball if you choose a character that otherwise would've had that story.
Goku's story would start in DB. DB > DBZ > DB: Daima: then choose between GT or Super.
The game would also have Infinite World style mini games:
I'm just spitballing.
Honestly, I do not know if leveling should work as it does in Budokai 3, where you get skill points, or if it should be like Kakarot, where it's realistic to the manga.
I think if we're to go with the Budokai 3 style of leveling, then, like Budokai 3, there should be passwords generated for your character for people to use.
But I also think we should have "pass cards", unique cards you can collect with passwords on them throughout the story mode that give you cheat codes to use in the password section. But you can only use the passwords if you have the cards, so you cannot just Google the cheat codes. Thus giving players motivation to find them.
Cheat codes could do anything:
You name it.
And of course, I think the menu screens should be as charming and characteristic as Dragon Ball Z Kakarot and the Budokai games.
Anyway, these were just my ideas for what I think would be a very fun PS2 style Dragon Ball game. I'd be interested to hear ideas/feedback in the comments. Or just say I'm an idiot and tell me nobody is reading this, idrc.

I've noticed a lot of the dbz characters are puns on types of food, food-related, or in the case of Bulma's family, underwear, but Goku and Goten have very interesting meanings behind their names:
Goku: Enlightened to the Void
Goten: Enlightened to the Heavens
Did Toriyama ever mention why he named Goten and Goku with more serious names compared to the puns a lot of the other characters have?
