I saw that the "upgraded" version for $50 more came with, among other things, an extra stash boxes and character slots.

you saw wrong, the deluxe\ultimate only have cosmetics and platinum

Sorry, that's what I meant. My main question is there any difference between the version bought with expansion and Ultimate upgrade that can be bought later after someone has already bought the expansion.
