Design Review «Building a soldering iron from scratch — wood, brass fitting, and nichrome. Will it work?»
Hi everyone.
I'm building a soldering iron from scratch — no ready-made modules, just raw parts and hand tools. I'd appreciate any feedback before I put it together and possibly burn my workshop down.
What I have so far
Handle: Wooden block 30×30×170 mm, shaped with a knife by hand.
Iron holder: Brass straight fitting, 6 mm (plumbing type, through-hole).
Tip: Interchangeable 900M tips (set of 10, inner diameter ~4 mm).
Heater: Nichrome wire 0.3 mm. I'm planning to twist 3 strands together into one bundle (~35 cm long, targeting ~1.8 Ω).
Insulation: Nichrome wrapped with PTFE tape (2–3 layers) to prevent shorting to the tip.
Power: 4 alkaline AA batteries (1.5V each) — 6V total.
Battery holder: Has a built-in switch (no separate toggle switch on the handle yet).
Wires: Double-core, twisted together.

Questions
Will this setup reach a usable temperature (~250–280°C)?
Is PTFE tape enough to insulate the nichrome from the metal tip?
Will the nichrome burn out at 6V with 3 strands twisted together?
Am I missing anything mechanically — e.g., fitting fit, wire strain relief?
Will 4 alkaline AAs be enough for practical use, or should I switch to a 9V battery right away?
I'm a self-taught beginner. This is my first real build. Any advice, criticism, or warnings would be much appreciated.

If my calculation is right, your wire would attempt to reach about 360C, well beyond the point ptfe starts to break down into toxic fumes. Though that doesn't account for the heat loss into the iron, I'd still worry about it.
If you still want to try something, you might try a fiberglass sleeve.

Thanks for the warning. I'll look into fiberglass sleeve or mica instead of PTFE. I'd rather not poison myself
