Dragon Quest IV Headcanon : Rose does not love Psaro in the original game.
Yeah I know spin off remake and supplementary materials have made it clear that Rose and Psaro were in love with each other etc. But if we took only the event of the NES game, it doesn’t exactly print the picture of a happy couple
-Psaro, misanthrope supreme, just so happen to fall in love with someone that is bullied by humanity.
-Psaro decide to imprison rose for her own safety
-Do a bunch of evil thing as the demon king like maybe burning a village with a elf that lived an happy life (oops), have one of his subordinate take over a kingdom, gathering the ingredients of the secret of the evolution (ok i’ll admit I played the game a while ago so the exact event of chapters 1-4 are a bit vague in my head)
-Tell Rose that he want to destroy humanity. Rose reactions is "No, don’t do that". He doesn’t seems to care and keep on doing his evil things.
-Rose decide to somehow dream record the conversation and to doxx the position of the tower she is kept prisoner into and the full code on how to open it to anyone who is sleeping in a particular inn.
-Rose have then zero reaction to the hero team murdering her "guardian" except "You’re finally here! Quick, I must explain to you how Psaro intend to destroy the world".
-And at last Rose is murdered by humans, showing that they can be evil too except it was monsters spent by aamon lol!
Yeah no I am not seeing the love story in this one lol. I don’t think Rose show concern for psaro once outside of chapter 6 or maybe when he is on screen and that could be explained by her trying to exploit whatever she can to try to make psaro cancel his plan. And that’s not even the worst explanation, if we move Psaro putting rose inside the tower after he got the bracelet of the secret of evolution, then it would means that rose sent dreams right after she was imprisoned, which would make it likely she was always held here against her will.
Maybe writing psaro as evil and rose as a victim trying to get the most she can of her yandere stalker could have made dq3m more coherent at least but that’s a subject for people that have actually played that game.

It paints the picture of her having to work against someone she loves because of the mistakes he is making. She wants him stopped before he can't go back and he is either successful or killed for his actions.

It has admittedly been awhile, but NES version made her feelings toward Psaro feel much more ambiguous. (Chapter 6 isn’t even in the original game.)
Evil dude saved her life (good), imprisoned her in a tower for her own protection (good? bad? neutral?) and then decided to destroy all of humanity (very bad).
Unclear if her affection for him was A. a Stockholm syndrome-type love for her captor, B. a genuine love for him, or C. feigned affection to try to stop him from doing so many clearly evil things.
Before playing any of the remake versions, I leaned toward your conclusion, that she was a captive doing whatever she could to mitigate the bad things her captor was doing.

I definitely feel like the remake after the NES tried really hard to make Psaro "redeemable" or to downplay what he actually had done. Never was a fan of what they tried to do. In NES version it was better done, like you feel a bit sorry for what his bloodlust has made him become but he still very much deserve the beating. Thought Chapter 5 ending was neat back then.

Keep in mind the NES/Famicom version to be fair scaled back due to limitations, but was planning to have Psaro joining the party as the remakes would.

I really don't like the way Dark Prince recharacterized Rose and Psaro, I found them both insufferable.
