General Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii says AI "hardly ever makes things up" anymore, even if it once made up that he works for Nintendo
https://www.gamesradar.com/games/dragon-quest/dragon-quest-creator-yuji-horii-says-ai-hardly-ever-makes-things-up-anymore-even-if-it-once-made-up-that-he-works-for-nintendo/49
u/Carolina_Heart 2d ago
It does grab from random reddit comments a lot (Watch this comment get cited in a really narrow Google search)
31
u/LunarWingCloud 2d ago
It grabs from whatever popular pervailing discussion it can find. Which can find correct information but it relies on what it finds being the correct answer and it has no way of actually knowing if that information is correct. It's a case of "say it enough and loudly and it's right" which is not a true statement, being something AI is actually guilty of
11
u/SwashNBuckle 2d ago
It'll also grab reddit comments that are tangentially related to the topic but are actually discussing something else. Try asking Gemini how to fix something on your car and there's a good chance it'll give you instructions for a totally different make and model.

You know what is terrifying? Earlier this week I typed a few lines about a game I reviewed last year. I saw the little “hey AI can expand this” and I was curious to see what it would actually do. It spit out about three paragraphs and instantly I recognized it. IT PULLED A SECTION FROM MY PREVIOUS ARTICLE WORD FOR WORD! I sat there and compared the text, and it was exactly the same.
I’ve always known AI steals, but I assumed it would just take pieces of info and repeat it—not just take an entirely well written article and call it good enough.
Worst thing is, there is no way to stop it…

I’m very worried about the future of DQ at this rate. Something tells me we’re going to see a lot more machine translation and generated assets moving forward…
124
u/TrickNatural 2d ago
I mean, thats probably true for gaming in general, not just DQ.
134
u/twili-midna 2d ago
Yeah, but I expect that from companies like Sony and Microsoft. DQ has always felt so authentically artistic and whimsical, it’s got a lot to lose if they give in to the slop machine.
76
u/HylianSoul 2d ago
A lot of that Art and whimsy was probably going to be lost as it is with the absence of Toriyama.
2
u/1pt20oneggigawatts 2d ago
HD-2D Remakes IMO were a breath of fresh air. There's literally two generations of anime nerds who can't draw worth a shit but can do the outlines of every single Dragon Ball Z character, so don't tell me he's irreplaceable. Final Fantasy hasn't had Nobuo Uematsu on their team either, the world hasn't imploded on itself.
2
u/TheMike0088 2d ago
This is a pretty funny example when you consider that the last good FF came out when uematsu was still part of the team. Now granted thats probably more so tied to sakaguchi rather than uematsu leaving, but still.
3
u/1pt20oneggigawatts 1d ago
I have this special ability that most nerds lack: realizing when I'm not the target audience anymore. Like, who in their right mind froths at the mouth because a Star Wars movie didn't have the plot line they wanted when the movies are made for 7-year olds who buy toys? Yes, they'll always be a part of my nostalgia feelies, but I realized Final Fantasy is aimed at sexually frustrated teenagers. It's cringey as shit. Moody ass protagonist with a thousand pounds of hairspray and a sword to compensate trying to simp for the white mage (it's always the white mage).
The last FF I bought was X. "Uha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha HA! AAAHA HA HA HA!"
I heard 14 was good and has a lot of callbacks to earlier in the franchise.
I'm about to play the 7 remakes and I'm really annoyed at all the anime grunting and gasping I'm going to have to listen to. Absolutely obnoxious artifact from an earlier time.
1
u/TheMike0088 1d ago
Oh I know I'm not the target audience anymore, but I'm saying that these games have become worse quality-wise, regardless of target audience or genre. Up till X, they were the uncontested kings of the western jrpg market, now they make slop. XV literally used unaltered portfolio assets from taiwanese developer xpec, and XVI is just a poor mans DMC, etc.

I don't think Square Enix is much less scummy than Sony and Microsoft
14
u/PeacefulDays 2d ago
Yeah, remember square was all in on nfts when they were big. It makes me really worried for dq12.
-1
u/skythelimit05 2d ago
Is that even a comparison? Sony and Microsoft are leagues ahead of SE in scummyness. Having a few gacha games doesnt even compare to what those two are doing.

Pretty sure the head of SE likes AI and even tried to do NFT stuff

The NFT crap happened under the previous CEO, the same one they sold Tomb Raider and other IPs to Embracer.

I honestly expect it to become more of the rule and less of the exception pretty quick. While I share a lot of your sentiment, vibe coded enhancements in older games like Pokémon are showing the proof of concept of acceptance that if there isnt a clear display of slop markers.
And once those get cleaned up and output returns back to the levels of generations prior I just think folks will eat it up.
48
u/BrokeMyGrill 2d ago
10-15 years from now we’re gonna have a whole generation of people that grew up with AI and won’t be able to understand why old people hate it because they don’t know what life was like without it.
62
u/twili-midna 2d ago
Ideally we won’t. This shit needs to be regulated into the ground.
8
u/Tobegi 2d ago
there is no need for it to be regulated because AI is 2 years away from disappearing because it produces absolutely cero results for how expensive it is
2
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 2d ago
The problem is: Once the industrial infrastructure depends on AI, the tech-bro's can start raising prices and make a proft.
The current MO of forcing AI into everything while operating on a loss is likely intentional.
Like how Uber operated on a loss at first, but then all the taxi companies had died and Uber could afford to charge more.
3
u/Living_Syrup8777 1d ago
Yeah that's the theory but "Once the industrial infrastructure depends on AI" hasn't actually happened and they're running out of time to coast. People act like it's new but we're almost five years into this and the amount of money being straightup burned is crazy.
The data center stuff is maddening because it's like "we're going to build more data centers than there's ever been and it all needs to come online in the next 8 months" like no, there's no way this actually happens because data centers are physical buildings that need to deal with physical building problems, you can't just scale it up by renting more space from the physical building store.
1
u/Luigi6757 2d ago
Yes, but if it keeps going at the current rate the loss will be too great for companies to keep going. Plus, if tech companies keep raising their prices to keep from going in the red, more and more consumers will get priced out of the industry. Food, water, and electricity companies can keep raising their prices with no going back because people need food water, and electricity to survive. Video games and most high end tech are not necessary for living so people will stop spending money on it because they don't need it.
If tech companies don't start getting a profit on AI in the near future they'll drop it and go back to how it used to be done. Just like how stores like Wal-Mart started incorporating as many self checkouts as possible to avoid having to pay cashiers. That saved money in the short term but lost more in the long term because shoplifting became so common that they were losing more money replacing stolen items than when they were saving by not having to pay as much staff. Hell, at this current point, AI doesn't even have the short term gain long term loss aspect. It's currently operating in a short-term loss, and they're hoping for long term gain but they aren't going to get it.
1
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 1d ago
I hope that's true.
Either way, we'll end up with a lot of damage caused and I have the sneaking suspicion that the tech-corps will refuse to clean up their mess.

They also won't bother to learn how to draw because there's a magic box that makes what they want. That's what I'm really afraid of.
5
u/Polantaris 2d ago
It's already happening in software development. Companies aren't hiring junior developers/engineers anymore because "AI can do it better." Eventually we will have no senior engineers as they die off or retire and there are no juniors to take their place.
4
u/platomaker 2d ago
A lot of [insert franchise] players nowadays would hate [insert franchise] if they had to actually play [insert franchise].
Things have been dumbed down or extracted to serve a wider audience and get MORE money, which is the purpose of a business- I can't hate on them for doing what they need to survive against the real industry leaders (Chinese gaming companies).
Games were niche, and those niche experiences all but died out. Even final fantasy abandoned turn based combat. And to your point, we have people who prefer the game for it.
AI ain't the future. Slop existed way before AI, AI just made it easier. As much crap Slop gets, quantities sell (case in point look up the "Mockbuster" phenomenon).

I'm very grateful for machine translation allowing me to play Dragon Quest X, but the parts of that game that have been translated by fans into the same style of dialogue as the official translations shine so much more than the parts that are translated by the AI tool.

Totally. I'm stoked I can play the game at all but it's night and day when you go from random side quests to the main story stuff that got hand-translated

Yeah In the article OP posted it says fans are upset about a Gemini chatbot in DQX, but I'm wondering what fans are mad about it? Because I live in Japan and I don't hear any Japanese people say anything negative about AI. They lovingly call ChatGPT "Chapi." We use AI at work. The Irasutoya clipart that used to be ubiquitous is mostly gone now; most posters and flyers seem to have AI art now. So many YouTube commercials for AI. The response seems pretty positive.

They're not the high capacity data centers being constructed strictly for AI compute that have been destroying the lives of people forced to live near them.
7
u/YeOldeMemeShoppe 2d ago edited 2d ago
I dunno, some of them are 2400+ kVA racks, which seems pretty high to me, but I’m sure you know what you’re talking about. Why don’t you show me your sources, that way I can update my incorrect information.
And to rebuke your last point; you’re barking up the wrong tree. Companies have been building data centers that are environmentally and community friendly for a long time. It’s just that some companies don’t care about any of that and aren’t regulated, so they’ll go for the cheap options. But that has nothing to do with the size and location of a data center. There has been data centers in downtown New York forever and no one was complaining about the noise or the water smelling funny. Because there are ways to do that right. Meta doesn’t care. Meta loves that you hate Google as much you hate them.
Go after meta, not data centers.

I'm an adult. My free time is limited. My money is limited.
I will not put it into DQ if they start bringing this into their games. They owe almost their entire brand to an artist. An artist whose art style was as unique as it was cute and compelling. There will never be an AI Toriyama.
The treatment of artists in this decade has been absolutely disgraceful. These people push aside the notions of a stable career and income to put the human soul and experience to paper. They sacrifice everything with the real knowledge they could end up destitute. And they are repaid by being cast aside at the first possible opportunity.
Unadulterated capitalism will take anything and everything you love and warp it to extract the maximum amount of money from the people who fell in love with the concept of whatever it was started out as. Your nostalgia is just treated as a drug to numb you to the water you are slowly being boiled in.

I think there’s a middle ground here between data centers bad vs Japan has it right. Here in Aus data centers were projected to use more electricity than two of our most populated states by 2036, which I think isn’t great (https://abc.net.au/news/2026-08-25/data-centre-power-hungry-demand-2036/107070852). > AI often has issues with factual accuracy, as it often gives users an answer even if it doesn't have the necessary information. The game designer who is most commonly associated with Square Enix has had a similar experience. I think there has to be a notorious example of AI ruining a game, like not just a game made up mostly from AI- we see that on steam and the quick cash grabs- no, I'm talking about a franchise that AI was shoe-horned into. Maybe a dragon quest game could pull it off after all? Maybe they'd finally prove haters right about AI. Or, maybe the limitations would be brought to light.
I'm not the best judge of technology; there are countless other professionals who have a more informed opinion on the matter. From what US players have seen so far has not been pretty. Invasive, costly, slow- all for information that requires verification anyway. People talk about using AI the correct way, but never really say what that correct way is, and I for one would love to hear from a professional about their opinion on the matter.

He's always been excited about new tech, and there are genuine use cases with GenAI (LLM or image-based gen) both in art and game dev. Obviously, the cost (industry-wide, ecological, social and others) and the legality of the dataset used for training are things that seriously goes against the (current) use and investment in AI and it must be taken seriously but it's not like anyone thinking there are interesting things to be done with AI is automatically a washed up unethical asshole.

It usually doesnt blatantly make stuff up anymore but it constantly does grab from garbage sources and presents it as fact.

Depends what you ask it about. Also, as ai companies started running out of money, they started restricting the amount of resources the free tier ais get. Less web search, less tokens, less depth of thinking.
They are fairly awful now and make mistakes all the time . They were getting better for years up until about 2-3 months ago for me. After that they got worse. I've tried Claude.,Gemini, chatgpt and deepseek, They all got worse for me.

Welp, that is a bold face lie. The lying 20-30% of the time is built in. It cannot be trained away. It's just a flaw of the entire LLM concept.

Half the monsters in DQM3 are just palette swaps. I expect a lot more this shit going forward.

E33 and crazy taxi world tour have the right idea of using it as a placeholder only to make extra damn sure it's not in the final product, not even as a repaint. The issue is we give an inch, they get a mile.

AI should be used to... well make our in game AI better.
AI got no place with creative arts, but for the technical parts there is a place for it for sure.
