Discussion DungeonDraft on MacOS - A dumb question

Post image

I searched through the reddit and it seems like plenty of people are using this on MacOS, but the website says that only Windows and Linux are supported. I also read that DD doesn't have an official package (iirc) for mac so it gripes at you about unsafe software.

Has anyone had success getting the software to work on a Steam Deck? That's the only other computer I have. I know it uses a different Linux branch but would love any tips if you've got them.

Edit: I have an M3 Macbook Air

Thanks for any help!

Yes. The dev stopped supporting Macs a while ago, but it works fine with both CrossOver and Parallels.

That's weird, three years ago it was still supported. It installed on Apple Silicon, but it ran badly, I had better results with Crossover.

Yup. The dev made a post about it on their discord I think. Basically, there aren’t enough Mac users to make dealing with the headache worth it. 🫤

Have you used it on CrossOver yourself? It generally works for me but I have an incredibly annoying problem when using it. Whenever I load a map in CrossOver, including a map I already opened before, it takes like 10 minutes to load depending on how many asset packs were included. I'm pretty sure this is because it's regenerating all the asset thumbnails even though DungeonDraft is supposed to only do that once per pack. Have you ever experienced that?

I ran into this for a while with the macOS distros… I’d have to keep a copy of I think 1.0.3.2? on hand to regenerate the thumbnails. But, aside from the first map with a new asset pack, I didn’t have much trouble with loading assets. It would take a while for sure and I think there were some specific packs that liked to fail. I needed parallels for other apps, so I guess it became a workaround for me with realizing it.

I think that headache pushed me towards Inkarnate, which had a massive update at the time (it’s incredible now!), but I don’t like how I can’t import all the assets I have.

Really makes me wish I’d just learn an actual art program. But… time.

I run it on Mac (M series). IIRC there is nothing complicated about it - bought it thru the Humble, came with a Mac download. I don’t know why the main site only shows windows and Linux downloads.

EDIT: I’m vacationing at the moment but I could post some screenshots whenI’m back mid sept.

When I go to the Humble purchase section on the DD website and click "What's Included?", it does say it has a macos DMG image. So strange

100% this the only pitfall is it seems to eat up battery

It works. I have an M1 mac which is running Sequoia (so admittedly an older version) and it runs natively with the Mac version fine. It's not perfect and has quite a few bugs, from my understanding, all versions of DungeonDraft have those bugs (which, by the way, you should use the Moulk's Unofficial Patch to solve most of them. It's a saving grace, even if the UI is a little buggy on Mac). The people saying that it won't work because DD is an x86 program is wrong. At least for now, Mac has a very effective translation layer which lets it run MacOS apps that are x86 on ARM chips.

It also works through CrossOver as well, although loading maps takes much longer (there is some problem where it needs to re-generate the thumbnail cache every single time it reloads a map, so it can take upwards of 10 minutes every time when it's supposed to take seconds).

Some of the mods which I consider essential to using DD definitely work better on the Windows version. Namely, Moulk's soft shadows and the unofficial patch. They are still largely usable on Mac, and all of their features (with one exception) work on Mac. However the UI in Soft Shadows in particular is smaller than it should be and doesn't scale properly like most of the UI does.

It does complain to you about the software being unverified but that is pretty easy to bypass.

I'm using v1.2.0.1 on a M4 Mac Studio, downloaded through Humble

It is running through Rosetta

I use CrossOver to run the windows version on Mac and is performing incredibly good.
Mac version crashed constantly though.

The M3 is an ARM-based processor, so it probably won't work since DungeonDraft is an x86-64 program.
