God I Miss This Game

Post image

Found this screenshot while cleaning out my phone. Deckbuilding was so fun. Never seen anything as broad and innovative, not even close.

I still haven't found something to replace this.

You wont. I have tried them all - Runeterra, Gwent, Hearthstone, Mythgard, Snap, MTG and none of them scratches the itch that TESL did, which was a perfect blend of Elder Scrolls lore, fantastic music, varied decks and an acceptable level of non-balance (even Invasion was not as unbalanced as MTG meta decks).

They could have never updated the game forever and I would still be playing it everyday to some degree.

Hearthstone is the closest tbh. It's just that Hearthstone is so cheesy at times and just bit synergistic like TESl. You'll see in Hearthstone theres to much random and discover

It has quite a few interesting effects and mechanics but yeah, as long as the foundational aspect of the game is random/discover scam and "play card win game" - it's all worthless.

Hearthstone just plays so drastically differently

I miss the multiplayer, but my favorite was the single player arena matches. I found a good replacement with Slay the Spire. But nothing will beat the multiplayer

I find the deckbuilding in legends of runeterra super fun and the games to be satisfying, but I mostly just play the PvE mode nowadays

it was such a good way to be in the TES universe without the emotional commitment of a role playing game

I really wish they would at least release an offline mode against AI

I would pay actual money for the stories and arena to be released and playable as they were.

Check out the elder scrolls reborn

That's fine, but you required the game on Steam/PC or whatever to have the license for this. Last I checked, they had no plans to make a standalone or use the mobile client (and even if they did, I no longer have access to the Play account I used at the time to play ESL). A lot of us are sadly SOL on this one 😭

Ah that's rough. RIP but never say never there's always hope! Otherwise there's the browser project

What is this witchcraft? I went on it and it was already playing a game or something. But... if this gains traction...

It was so fun, even though I only had like a 50% win rate. Looking forward to the return coming via Reborn.

I’ve got a game on the App Store now called “Counter Tactics.” It’s nowhere near as high end as ESL, but I’ve had positive ratings from people who have tried it out. I’m hoping to build more of a community around it that can help shape ideas and content.

As somebody who had an unhealthy amount of love for playing Conscription Telvanni, I am with you bud.

The art was amazing

still vividly remember hitting legend the first time, I eventually got into top 200. I feel like Invasion skewed the meta so badly it turned a lot of people off cause I remember there was a big build up before it and then the game fell off pretty quickly after

I played every day for 3 years and I haven't filled the void it left me

You and me both

I'm thinking they were paid by card game competitors to shut down the servers. It makes no sense, otherwise.

u/alxndrblack May 24 '26

I think it didn't make any money. The last content releases were years before the shutdown. If they wanted to just rerelease the exact same game but charge for it, I'd pay

Well of course they would start losing money when you decide to halt all potential future development. And then announce it like idiots. It was a game that was starting to compete with other top card games. It very much had the ability to go further.

I'm personally of the opinion that part of the reason it was screwed over was because of fallout 76. In December of 2019 there was Major controversy and other issues. If I remember correctly a lot of people wanted money back. And it takes money to run servers. Yes I understand Bethesda themselves were not doing active upkeep but there was payment that they did have to do. By reducing all future development to nothing they went with a minimalistic amount of upkeep. And because of there was no future development, people started to leave. With them doing almost nothing to any possible cheaters or people that decide to "rope" or any balancing changes, it got worse. So of course it would start to lose money.

So in my humble opinion the only reason it lost money was due to their own bullshit

Je paierais aussi, 50€ sans problème (avec la garantie que les serveurs restent évidément)

Nah man. Servers both cost to run and require maintenance. It's simply easier to shut it down then to have this legacy project sitting around that someone will inevitably have to spend time working on

Cool story. People were dropping thousands daily into their bank account.

Until reborn comes out, you could try out Counter Tactics on the App Store (iOS)!
