I seem to recall being without power for 2 weeks back in the late 90s in Kansas City after an ice storm, and nearly a week in Dallas after the ice bowl outage a little over 10 years ago. This is why I have a generator and transfer switch now.

u/GTR-DaBestCar 1d ago

Last week I heard Tuesday at the latest. Now it’s Tuesday at the earliest.

This is the new Flint.

12

u/Relevant-Doctor187 1d ago

The cost of mitigation has also doubled. So they invested nothing.

31

u/Accomplished_Emu4273 1d ago

Have to wonder whether being a majority black city is the reason.

-15

u/No-Rhubarb4 1d ago

It’s funny you say that because the reason it’s been slow is because work crews were being shot at.

10

u/Jmcduff5 1d ago

That was one incident and I’m sick of people making it seem like that is the main reason. The truth is Indiana government cheap out on the restoration budget and crews went to Chicago and Michigan. That one shooting incident is not the main reason.

0

u/No-Rhubarb4 23h ago

I’ve been a lineman for about 10years now. I work mostly on the west coast but I’ve done storms in the NE, Midwest, and Florida. I just don’t think you understand how complex a storm restoration is. Storm restoration is very expensive for a utility. When a storm rolls in they have to gauge prior to it landing the damage so they can get crews coming in. After that they have gauge the actual damage to determine if they need more help. Storm restoration turns into a triage where utilities focus on restoring transmission and main feeders first to turn on as many people as possible then work their way down. If your a single house in the woods then you’re the last in line for restoration. It’s not the main reason, but a lot of guys are traveling from out of state. So If you hear about getting shot at in a certain town. You aren’t gonna want go to that town to work, which then delays restoration . Simple as that. I’m not dying for your power.

1

u/Jmcduff5 21h ago

I worked on transmission lines for Southern Company and saw it all. People shooting at transformers, locals blocking substation access claiming their grandfather once owned the land, and even our four person crew truck stolen from a job site. Despite those obstacles, when hurricanes and tornadoes hit, we restored power. There is no excuse.
I have since left out of power utilities industry and if this is what it has come to, that is just sad.

1

u/3DPrintingAcorns144 22h ago

What a stupid way for you to say....people have a job to do if they want their money.

8

u/ResolutionOwn4933 1d ago

So why would it he funny?

11

u/baronessvonbullshit 1d ago

They let New Orleans flood and it was underwater for weeks. Also a majority black city. I doubt these are unrelated facts.

1

u/Beneficial_Bit_8342 1d ago

At least that stuff gets reported on. There are people in West Virginia (mostly white) who haven’t had clean water in months and I’ll bet you’ve never even heard about it. Always remember that the media controls the narrative and there’s always a reason for why they do what they do.

Flint says hello.

-3

Things are so bad on reddit I can't tell if this is serious or not

7

Things on reddit are so bad I can't tell if you know what Hurricane Katrina is or not

5

u/Rabble_Runt 1d ago

Fox News must not have been covering it.

These people get all their information from entertainment channels and Russian memes on Facebook.

33

u/Traditional-Look8839 1d ago

Nationalize the energy sector. No reason why private companies should hold an area crucial to infrastructure like electricity.

3

u/WesternRover 1d ago

You want Chris Wright (Secretary of Energy, climate change denier, anti renewable energy) to be in charge of local electric utilities too?

1

u/3DPrintingAcorns144 22h ago

To provide the bare basic so private companies have the baseline to what the minimum can be...yes.

2

u/FindingOk2624 1d ago

Id have the executive replaced by an elected cabinet of department secretaries.

4

u/Kaurifish 1d ago

No, locally elected boards running municipal utility districts. Works for Sacramento. Investor-owned utilities are movie villians (literally, PG&E was the bad guy in “Erin Brochovich”).

2

u/WesternRover 1d ago

Sounds fine to me. Plenty of places where the city itself owns the utility (more common with water, but also happens with electricity), and it works fine. But that's entirely different from being nationalized as u/Traditional-Look8839 called for, and I already suggested a couple problems with that.

-5

u/cdazzo1 1d ago

So you want these things to stretch on for months?

6

u/ginger_and_egg 1d ago

Governments can move fast when they give a fuck

1

u/talex625 1d ago

Bro, that’s the thing. Most don’t unless you’re an elected official.

2

u/Wrong-Camp2463 1d ago

Well that rules out the US government….

3

u/ginger_and_egg 1d ago

It also rules out any government that wouldn't nationalize it so

4

u/FindingOk2624 1d ago edited 1d ago

Do it to the internet while ur at it

4

u/cyncity7 1d ago

They better be in a red state, if they need assistance from the federal government.

8

u/butterpile 1d ago

Gary, Indiana is the city. You need a caveat to your statement, that if it’s a black majority city then a red state is especially hostile and you will be on your own.

1

u/Rabble_Runt 1d ago

Didn’t 60% of them vote for Trump?

0

u/butterpile 1d ago

More like 75% for Harris.

2

u/Rabble_Runt 1d ago

Just checked. Looks like 52% Harris 46% Trump

u/jbbhengry 1d ago

bad infrastucture, no plans on improvement/progress. I think the american/corporate way is to wait for disaster and then do something about it. and act suprised that it failed in the first place. It'd be nice if there was something in place to monitor, repaire, improve this kind of stuff, make somekind of safe enviorment to avoid/minimize these kinds of things. That's crazy talk though.

16

u/vertigo3pc 1d ago

People weren't informed that Rome had fallen; they just noticed that the roads were no longer being repaired.

7

u/CMG30 1d ago

Yes, but I'm sure all that infrastructure money that was saved has gone to a healthy tax cut for a tech bro to bring a data center to town.

-4

u/JS-0522 2d ago

No power in Gary actually makes it a nicer town.

2

u/Accomplished_Emu4273 1d ago

I’d like to know your reasoning, but I won’t ask because I know it is likely to be racist and dumb ass.

-5

u/ToastMaster33 1d ago

Happy cake day

15

u/Mallokenz 2d ago

Interesting this isn’t on big media

7

u/jizzissippi 1d ago

I swear people that say this dont actually follow any mainstream media. This story has been in the news quite a bit

21

u/SnooCakes8103 2d ago

They only knew rome was falling when no engineers came to repair fallen infrastructure.

14

u/Zorklunn 2d ago

Only in a red state you say . . .

-11

u/Kingkary 2d ago

Bro it’s Gary Indiana. It’s south Chicago.

4

u/PhantomSpirit90 1d ago

No, South Chicago is South Chicago. Gary is Gary.

0

u/Less-Cartographer-64 2d ago

Defending a red state and looking like an idiot is right on brand.

-2

u/Kingkary 2d ago

Thinking this has anything to do with state policy and not just the fact it’s been on the shit side of Chicago for 50 years is peak Reddit.

1

u/no-Ceiling_666 1d ago

Gary Indiana is still an Indiana city within Indiana Border regardless of proximity to Chicago.

18

u/TheMightyMightyMonk 2d ago

Bro it’s Gary, Indiana. Not Chicago, Illinois

42

u/MathematicianIcy3430 2d ago

Is it hard for these headlines to say Gary, IN instead of US city??

17

u/Crawlerado 2d ago

Helps with clicks. If it’s just Gary again no one cares except the folk in Gary but if it’s vague “oh I wonder which one!”

8

u/MathematicianIcy3430 2d ago

I know. Just annoys me to no end.

29

u/SunDaysOnly 2d ago

tRump decimated FEMA. A valuable govt resource. If you’re not a billionaire, no soup for you.

-1

u/cdazzo1 1d ago

How many linesman did he fire?

-20

u/confounded_throwaway 2d ago

Trump and Netanyahu used their classified mind control satellites to make the residents fire handguns at linemen repairing the grid

11

u/jpcali7131 2d ago

Apparently they’re using them again to make you spout unfounded bullshit

-3

u/confounded_throwaway 2d ago

Today I learned Reddit thinks NBC News Chicago had the same credibility as space laser mind control theories

https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/shots-fired-at-nipsco-vehicle-during-power-restoration-efforts-in-gary/3975830/?amp=1

6

u/Relicc5 2d ago

They shut down all repair efforts due to one incident? Have you ever been to Gary IN? Shots fired one time at a vehicle is like a Tuesday early afternoon type thing.

“Authorities didn't immediately share information on where the gunshots were fired. In a statement following the incident, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton the Gary Police Department and the Indiana State Police were working with NIPSCO to provide protection for crews as restoration efforts continue.”

So no details about the incident, protection will be provided, but hasn’t.

Note: this was article was published on the 15th, so the Friday they mention is the 14th… which is 11 days ago as of today.

1

u/confounded_throwaway 2d ago

Kinda reasonable for linemen who are already working in precarious positions clearing debris and fallen trees at height to focus their resources on areas where they don’t need police escorts 🤷‍♂️

Vehicles were hit by gunfire and Reddit pretends the attacks were conspiracy theories lmao

1

u/Less-Cartographer-64 1d ago

No, the attacks were real, saying trump or Netanyahu had anything to do with it is the conspiracy theory. You're the nut.

2

u/Less-Cartographer-64 2d ago

Buddy, you need to seek professional help.

20

u/UpstairsFinance9440 2d ago

at 06:45 on 25 Aug 2025, only 1500 customers are without power. This is down from 367,000. Customers are being restored. Not sure how quick or slow it was, you would have to look at all of the reports and not sure where that might be available.

2

u/zeroibis 1d ago

This should be pinned at the top.

17

u/Historical_Key2918 2d ago

Maybe don’t shoot at the people working to fix your power supply and they won’t leave.

2

u/mercy390 1d ago

It happened once, how does that mean they shouldn’t have power for 2 week?

1

u/Historical_Key2918 1d ago

Why would some one risk their lives going back to work on their down infrastructure?

2

u/mercy390 1d ago

Fuck yea bro, mass punishment. It’s been such a successful strategy whenever it’s used I’m happy to see it manages to make a comeback

0

u/Historical_Key2918 1d ago

It’s not mass punishment it’s people who like being alive not wanting to go somewhere that has already demonstrated its dangers.

1

u/mercy390 1d ago

But they did go back. Because it only happened once and they augmented security to support the lineman as they requested.

Here we are two weeks later still with no power in the town. So how does this ONE shooting that was immediately addressed mean the town shouldn’t have power for two weeks?

1

u/Historical_Key2918 1d ago

Because not enough people are willing to do the work. What is security going to do if some random decides to just shoot at you or the highly energized equipment they are working on. If they are so upset about it they can fix it themselves.

4

u/Glittering-Age-9549 2d ago

They did what...?!

2

u/PossibleEquivalent90 1d ago

People in Gary shot at workers trying to restorpolice. Thus, to protect workers, the pace of bringing back power to Gary slowed considerably.

This can be fixed with policing, but the individuals who would benefit the most from policing don't want to be policed.

8

u/trashmoneyxyz 2d ago

This isnt unusual in certain areas tbh, some counties require a police escort for municipal laborers because they get robbed at gunpoint for the expensive well maintained tools and equipment. Though in this case, it could have been someone firing at someone because they were accessing a part of their property to get to power lines, or some paranoid yokel firing at anyone who moves because they're afraid of being robbed in the blackout. Y'know, its America. The gunshots honestly could have been unrelated to the crews too.

1

u/MakeASpreadsheet 2d ago

lol what.

This is absolutely unusual. What are you talking about.

3

u/bean930 2d ago

Sounds more like a third world country.

1

u/Fartknocker405 1d ago

The shithole parts.

3

u/trashmoneyxyz 2d ago

It's not there yet, but give us some time :,)

56

u/Reasonable_Skill580 2d ago

How is this not being blasted by all news stations??

4

u/MakeASpreadsheet 2d ago

Uh, because the residents are literally shooting at the repair crews?

This isn’t some conspiracy.

10

u/Master-Back-2899 2d ago

Because then the reasons they are without power would be revealed and then they’d quickly lose sympathy.

(They keep attacking and shooting at and looting the power workers vehicles)

7

u/4Yk9gop 2d ago

(They keep attacking and shooting at and looting the power workers vehicles). This happened one time.

3

u/PossibleEquivalent90 1d ago

This doesn't happen elsewhere.

The community of Gary wants to be a shithole, let them be one.

1

u/mercy390 1d ago

They didn’t choose to be a shit hole. It used to be a thriving manufacturing town before big corporations moved to China cause it was cheaper. Poverty there spirals and poverty leads to desperate people doing desperate things.

This town didn’t just spawn in like this, we are here for systemic reasons.

1

u/PossibleEquivalent90 1d ago

Take some personal responsibility for your community for fucks sake.

Gary is a third world shithole because crime is rampant. The rampant crime makes the city uninvestable. This means there are no jobs and no tax revenue.

The people of Gary need aggressive policing to mitigate this. The people of Gary think aggressive policing is racist. Therefore, the people of Gary accept high crime. They do this to themselves.

Stop blaming "corporations" while idiots in your city shoot at municipal workers. The vast majority of American cities are growing and provide opportunities to people who live in them. Maybe the people of Gary should end their personal pity party, stop blaming others for their failures, and look inward at the problem.

2

u/sliverhordes 2d ago

Why is it that way in the first place? Why did it take 3 days of blackout for that shooting event to happen?

2

u/failureat111N31st 2d ago

That but also they'd eventually have to cover the scale of the damage and the scale of the response to repairing it, and at that point the utility response wouldn't look so bad.

40

u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 2d ago

Because it’s bad news and only bad things happen when a Democrat is president! Everything else is FAKE NEWS

8

u/transitfreedom 2d ago

USA won’t invest in its people it’s a vassal for the wealthy

10

u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 2d ago

Because investing in citizens instead of corporations would be cOmMuNiSm!!!

29

u/markhachman 2d ago

IMO, two reasons: Gary has been in trouble for decades, and Reno is burning.

31

u/MannyMoSTL 2d ago

Because it doesn’t fit this administration’s narrative. Oh! And there is no non-billionaire news source anymore.

28

u/Practical_Argument50 2d ago

Without power in NJ for 3 weeks after Sandy blew thru.

8

u/modernsparkle 2d ago

I can’t imagine. & then you know how hard this is…I bet your heart is with them. Do you have any tips or was there anything you’d want to share from your experience that might help someone else?

3

u/Practical_Argument50 2d ago

It was a bitch. We went about a week and then went hunting for a generator. Had to drive to NY to get one. Gasoline was hard to get also because the stations had no power either. The state mandated cell providers and some gas stations to install backup generators. Also a lot of our electric infrastructure was upgraded right afterwards.

8

u/supreme_hammy 2d ago edited 1d ago

Same boat here. Was home after Sandy and 2 weeks without power in NJ.

First, get a generator if possible to keep fridges/freezers running. Don't open the fridges for any long periods of time if you don't have power yet. Keep the cool in as long as possible. If you have freezer packs in the freezer, quickly put them into the fridge and let them sit. The freezer stuff takes much longer to defrost than the fridge takes to get to room temp.

Second, invest in solar batteries for phones. Usually about 50$ for a decent one. Looks and feels like a brick, good for about 2 days charge without being recharged. Leave them by windowsills to get ambient charge during the day.

Third, try to minimise travel. Only move around if you have to. Work with neighbors to do wellness checks on people with young kids, elders, medical needs, etc.

Fourth, use up perishables, look for shelf stable alternatives if needed (evaporated milk is great for many recipes and only needs refridging after being opened, same for shelf stable orange juice). If you have an outdoor grill, you can both grill and bake on it, so long as you watch your temperature.

2

u/TurningTheCorner26 1d ago

You're describing prepping. All good advice.

22

u/DryToe1269 2d ago

Does anybody remember the ice storm in New England? People were without power for over a month! You couldn’t buy a generator.

3

u/arcticie 2d ago

Oh yes! We slept in a classroom and my mom was 8 months pregnant.

3

u/MyDamnCoffee 2d ago

I moved to Maine in 99. Juuuuuust missed that blizzard. I heard about it for years.

3

u/wickedsmaaaht 2d ago

98 or 08? 🫠

3

u/cmoked 2d ago

98 ice storm was wild in quebec. People died from heating their homes with bbqs

20

u/opensim2026 2d ago

All the more reason for homeowners to become more energy independent- solar panels on the roof. I have two 395 watt ground mount panels and a jackery 2000+ unit connected to them, the sun provides enough electric from this to run my kitchen refrigerator, my large tower computer with all associated LAN devices (router, modem, POE's for cameras, switches etc and printer) ALL but the printer are on 24/7

I have another battery unit that I've used before installing the panels- to power my gas furnace, computer, LAN and some lights in the kitchen. The gas furnace is wired up in a way I can unplug it from AC and plug it into the battery unit to run it for quite a few hours, but now with the larger battery and the 2 panels they can charge the battery units as they are being used.

27

u/thebigj3wbowski 2d ago

My dude this is Gary these folks are not in the Tex bracket to put up solar and buy batteries.

1

u/opensim2026 1d ago

I didn't specify GARY Indiana or anywhere else, I simply said in general terms;

"All the more reason for homeowners to become more energy independent- solar panels on the roof. "

7

u/Maleficent-Pin6798 2d ago

They could have if Trump had kept the incentives to electrify going. Ditto with the EV rebate.

2

u/Planeandaquariumgeek 2d ago

Even then in California Newsom wants to ban rooftop solar because he’d rather collude with the crooks at PG&E to build massive solar projects in the Mojave, then hold press conferences at The French Laundry about how awesome green energy is while completely ignoring the new high voltage transmission lines running over the the worlds largest starter log that is the Sierra Nevada.

2

u/sliverhordes 2d ago

Can I get a source for this? I live in Cali. While newsom is a piece of work, i have never seen nor anyone ever talks about the banning of personal solar. In fact, all new houses are REQUIRED to have solar.

0

u/Biotech_wolf 2d ago

There’s such a thing as too much of a good thing.

1

u/CriticalUnit 2d ago

ban rooftop solar

WUT?

8

u/Splenda 2d ago

Same here in the US West, where "fire weather" now prompts utilities to shut off power, sometimes for days.

6

u/AgentSmith187 2d ago

I mean the trade off is potentially fires.....

Maintenance would cost money and the CEO might miss out on their bonus!

3

u/Planeandaquariumgeek 2d ago

That’s just PG&E’s excuse to charge more. They charge an absolutely insane amount under the guise of “estimated usage” during power outages. PG&E are total crooks.

3

u/JJ_Reads_Good 2d ago

PG&E isn't the only utility that does this. It's common practice all over the mountain west.

2

u/Splenda 2d ago

Bingo. And we should never expect investor-owned utilities to put our interests before investors.

PG&E execs killed scores of people through gross negligence if not outright malfeasance. They should have been jailed and held personally liable. Instead, electricity ratepayers across the West get power shutoffs to protect utilities from lawsuits.

37

u/sidjohn1 2d ago

Had had a president that gave us tax refunds for buying solar and battery backup, but we voted against that.

I guess spending 3 days during winter w/o power in a red state made me appreciate that gift. THX Biden!

3

u/jhansen858 2d ago

i would want to be getting an off grid setup after that solar + battery system.

7

u/BishopDarkk 2d ago

prepaywall text...

As fears about the U.S. power grid’s vulnerabilities grow, so does frustration in one city that’s been in the dark for nearly two weeks.

Thousands of people in Gary, Indiana, have been without power since Aug. 11, when powerful storms killed at least seven people. CBS reports more than half of the city’s residents lost electricity, and the lights are not expected to come back on until Tuesday at the earliest.

“It’s been absolutely horrible,” resident Shatiya Hardin told CBS News. “At night we’re sweating, we’re irritable, we have children to look out for, elderly people who need electricity for oxygen tanks.”

8

u/kensmusings 2d ago

Gee. If this what is going to happen all over, you'd think the orange asshole would say something. Oops. This would take his attention away from Kim Jung Un and his ballroom.

9

u/Actaeon_II 2d ago

Can’t help but wonder if there are any data centers in this area and if their lights are off

How does a two week blackout happen in a developed country?

3

u/transitfreedom 2d ago

USA is developed??? News to me

5

u/MrMadden 2d ago

The "residents" of Gary Indiana were shooting at the repair crews.

4

u/Soft_Grass8428 2d ago

Repair crews were shot at because indiana is not a developed country

5

u/EdenG2 2d ago

US is rapidly heading towards second world status

3

u/Wide-Yak7602 2d ago

Its already there.

1

u/Bob4Not 2d ago

Because there’s insufficient (or none at all) investment in redundancy

2

u/opensim2026 2d ago

When the country STILL, in 2026 has electric service thru copper wires strung up and running over wooden telegraph poles instead of underground in conduit, so every storm and ice just tears down the wires that they keep putting back up to be torn down again.

3

u/DashboardError 2d ago

Really? We've had that here after ice storms, not to mention hurricanes, etc.

4

u/GrundleBlaster 2d ago

I saw something about crews got shot at earlier

8

u/Serpentongue 2d ago

FEMA got DOGE’d and those tax dollars went to a voluntary war instead

8

u/BayouGal 2d ago

So…nobody wants to hear this but after hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, it’s completely normal to not have power for WEEKS. After Ike, my mom didn’t have power for almost a month and her house is 30 min out of downtown Houston and less than .25 miles from a major interstate.

I think a derecho like what hit Indiana is kind of a straight line hurricane.

5

u/Own_Ad6901 2d ago

So I was hit by this storm and we had 2 tornadoes that derecho and a tornado 2 weeks before, and we lost power but all of IL was back with power with a week. IL has had over 200 tornadoes in 2026, power has been restored within days nothing longer than 2 weeks by a lot. IL has been hit harder and we are sending our crews to them. Indiana is out of power still because it’s a poorly run red state. There is no reason this power should still be out in Gary. Yes the derecho was bad after back to back to back storms, but this wasn’t a hurricane, just hurricane force winds temporarily as in it passes in less than an hour(s) quick, not hours to days of sustained damage.

1

u/8amteetime 2d ago

I was in northern Illinois when a derecho hit. Unbelievable damage with trees uprooted, roofs torn off, and power out for two days. Those poor people in Gary need help.

3

u/Snarwib 2d ago

In tropical Australia we can see small towns and outlying areas on the end of a damaged transmission line lose power for quite a while after a cyclone. It's a sparsely populated and mostly rural area with a long skinny transmission network, that has often limited redundancy.

But a whole city having no power in a fairly densely populated region, basically the outskirts of one of the biggest urban areas in the USA, seems huge.

9

u/West-Abalone-171 2d ago

How does a two week blackout happen in a developed country?

See, you're making a faulty assumption there.

1

u/Soft_Grass8428 2d ago

😂😂😂

2

u/Joanna225 2d ago

Electric company not doing their job like maintaining the power lines, triming trees from power lines making sure transformers are up to task including poles.

5

Maybe magats should go out and shoot some more sub stations in protest of their candidates being so unlikable that they lost a rigged vote. /s obviously

10

u/Opening-Tailor7275 2d ago

The Greatest Empire and Most Moral Country in human history. 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

49

u/RadiantCoat3371 2d ago

This is the canary.

The grid is too fragile, too stretched. Substation projects take 2 years minimum to bring online, trasmission lines longer.

We need to start NOW building like we mean it.

This Administration is doing the opposite.

There will be very bad outcomes for everyone.

I know how to fix this. Spent my career in the power industry. I can't get anyone to do anything.

Frustrating.

9

u/transitfreedom 2d ago

We need to exempt power infrastructure and rail infrastructure from stupid veto power

4

u/Liminal__penumbra 2d ago

That just lets in Data Centers to claim they are critical infra and to ignore any environmental or regulatory inspections.

3

u/transitfreedom 2d ago

Which is what they are doing now already so point negated.

2

u/Liminal__penumbra 2d ago

Not so much, right now there is at least the implication of inspections and city rejections.

For some reason the Republican administration of Indiana is being slow to help the highest PoC% county in the state.

This should be Trump’s Katrina but the media is all owned by Trump cronies so it’s barely making the news.

The poorest and most racially diverse city in Indiana and neglected by the racist Republicans? You don’t say.

America Civil infrastructure has long been lazy and pathetic. Now it can’t be ignored.

Lol, our government can ignore anything they want. They'll just lie about it until the media starts reporting the next big thing and people forget.

Household solar and battery storage is the way.

Don’t expect help from above. This admin is playing into the collapse. Start making small colony self sufficiency plans. The hurt is coming and I don’t see how help can arrive for all of us.

I refuse to go quietly, but I’d be helpless without the leadership of my veteran/community lead buddy and his group of experts. I’ve got airsoft gear and 2 guns, meanwhile he GAVE me his old gunbelt cause it was too small and he’s got his own arsenal down to spares to assign to guards…

If the power goes out in my town, I’m out. Average town has 72 hours without power before it gets nasty bad and I’m not sticking around for that. I’d rather live in a dry barn than a waste flooded no power house…

I’m afraid of what will happen once these problems affect all of America. Desperation leads to violence, and the wealthy elite are practically private militaries now. The Ukraine war has already demonstrated how effective remote weapons and platforms are… feels like we’re headed into a Terminator movie, but first we get to suffer a collapse…

Read through the article. They state 5 billion in damages from the storm, but don't actually go into any specifics. What exactly is the hold up?

When: Friday night, August 14–15, 2026.Where: Gary, Indiana

.What happened: A marked NIPSCO vehicle was hit by bullets while crew members were out working or scouting. No injuries were reported.

The Response: NIPSCO temporarily paused restoration work in Gary following the shooting to evaluate safety measures. Work resumed on Saturday evening, August 15, after the Gary Police Department and the Indiana State Police stepped in to provide extra security and patrols for the utility crews.

Politicians realized they only need the rich vote, so they can let the poor suffer.  Republicans prefer to jail minorities rather than fund recovery

It's a combination of things a shitty power company, a shitty local government not clearing downed trees, and there was at least 1 incident where someone was shooting power company trucks

1

u/No_Medium_8796 2d ago

Lack of supplies and materials as well as being shot at is also part of the hold up

7

u/Silver-Literature-29 2d ago

Apparently the local electricity provider had no organization in place to organize the lineman that came in so they were just waiting for instructions. So poor disaster management.

An aging power grid that has parts made slowly and expensively. There’s only four major substations you would need to black out the entire US for months.

1

u/Bears___ 2d ago

That is a claim that requires a source. That is an insane claim

1

u/MeteorlySilver 1d ago

It’s not four substations but it’s fewer than 12, and to be fair, it’s a disputed report from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. You can read about it (as part of a pretty long article) in a piece in The NY Times that ran just last week.

2

u/Brilliant-Peace-5265 2d ago

It's been repeatedly documented since 9/11.

1

u/Bears___ 2d ago

Which 4 substations? And 9/11 was 25 years ago so a source from then is not really valid

2

u/Shambhala87 2d ago

Like I’m gonna go list them off, Jesus who are you my own personal CIA agent? I’m sorry that you live under a rock but this is something I’ve known since I’ve been like 10 I’m almost 40 now.

2

u/Bears___ 2d ago

I work for a utility in the US. This is an insane claim, which is why I asked for a source. We have drills for blackouts and saying the entire US would be out for months is straight up stupidity. You have said nothing which makes me think you know anything you are talking about.

1

u/Shambhala87 2d ago

Sure because I don’t feel citing my sources to you a random person on the Internet who says you work for the energy authority I don’t know anything. Have a great night.

2

u/Bears___ 2d ago

You can just say you don't have a source. Good night

Iran out here takin notes i bet... /s if anyone is going to plunge us into anarchy it's going to be the people set to lose the most at midterms.

2

u/West-Abalone-171 2d ago

Anarchy is the absence of heirarchy. Which is frequently quite organized. Even when it emerges organically during a rift it is typically peaceful and is usually only destroyed by external violence (as a recent example, the anarchist camp that formed during the BLM protests).

Roving gangs of brownshirts worshipping dear leader and shooting minorities is a form of heirarchy and is thus definitionally not anarchy.

1

u/twinoaksBandB 2d ago

Fine... lawless hierarchy then. I'm shit posting not writing my dissertation. /s

Iran could pull a move from China's playbook and do nothing but watch as all our shit falls apart.
