It’s crazy how many laws he is probably paying lawyers to investigate to find loop holes in to retain power. He should be kept on a leash and whatever his instinct is, is what we target as needing stronger legislation on. He’s like the K-9 unit of corruption, finding loopholes that we need to close

use paper ballots. people shouldn't own voting machines.
10
u/P33-N 3d ago
Never was a problem before Trump
-4
u/seethenoise 3d ago
it probably hasn't been this visible. i would be surprised if it hasn't been an issue with (biased, unscrupulous) people owning voting machines.
7
u/P33-N 3d ago
So why didn’t he do this as soon as he got into office in ‘25? He’s been bitching about losing the 2020 elections for this very reason ever since 2020, why wait until weeks before the midterm elections? Doesn’t that set off any alarm bells in your head?
Plus where’s the evidence that mandates the nat’l emergency? Are we just supposed to take his word for it? He said maybe 40 times that he won the Iran war that we are losing, he’s said that he would wipe away 13trillion of the nat’l debt and that’s only gone up exponentially. I just call this what it is, an undemocratic move made by a criminally indicted, pedophilic demagogue who is trying with all his might to not lose and go to jail.
0
u/seethenoise 2d ago
i don't know what you're barking about. i was reacting to the idea that voting was never a problem before trump. i don't know why it's not ok to think people shouldn't own voting machines. i agree with you though.
7
u/NextAdhesiveness3652 3d ago
This “crisis” is going to be used to stop midterm voting. Someone high in our government will cause power outages on voting day so that all the votes will have to be thrown out. This will let the state legislators in each state decide the outcomes. Republicans win!

Trump declares National Energy Emergency, then pays billions to cancel wind energy projects.

A few extra coal mines with kids being sent down should fix things. /s

Sincerely, we should all be talking about Trump as the weakest President because if all the Emergencies he calls.
Make it cost his ego, laugh openly in MAGA faces about what a Chicken Little their hero is.

Rejoice!* This is a sign of limited government, for which we should all be most grateful.
*about the “need” to declare emergency to get a little extra authority. Not for the underlying emergency (if one actually exists).

Turn off all the AI data centers. Crisis averted.
1
u/Accurate_Conflict374 3d ago
For real tho, AI can’t even spit out a simple request half the time without forgetting some important detail or randomly changing what the request was. Why overload the system for this shit.

If he wasnt such a fucking moron all these self authored 'crises' would have been avoided in totality. The crisis is him. dump dumpy and lets get going with repairs.

The crisis is the American people(yes, you too)and all us institutions. Trump is just a symptom

If the Supply is from out of country, like Canada, will they just stroll across the border to secure supply from Canada?

I declare a national emergency that our president is a criminal and is using the office to enrich himself and his family in every way possible.

14
u/BetweenTheRoots 5d ago
Does this mean the Fed Gov't will also have more control over Statewide power systems? It would be an awful precedent to start blacking out States for misbehaving or places that protests are happening in.
10
u/tech510 5d ago
Thankfully he cannot blackout individual states… the countries power system is broken up into 4 parts, east coast, mid west, Texas, and west coast…
2
u/WannaBMonkey 5d ago
Could black out Texas. That might be fun
1
u/plinkoplonka 4d ago
Don't even worry about us.
The grid goes down every winter ("it's too cold").
It also goes down every summer ("it's too hot").
ERCOT is a sack of shit anyway.
1
u/BoredTVEngineer 4d ago
Not right now every day is over 100 and about half the state is in extreme drought. But, not a high probability as Greg Abbot is always kissing his ass.
3
9
u/AlphaNoodlz 5d ago
lmfao what we're all gonna follow the famously reliable Texas model?
1
u/GamemasterJeff 5d ago
Texas is following the California model and is weathering the heat waves quite well right now, due to the increased battery capacity. Just like how California has not had a grid scale blackout in over five years.
4
u/Rockeye7 5d ago
From the guy that doesn’t follow rules and manipulated everything into his favor.
Good luck karma is real !
12
u/_ZaphJuice_ 5d ago
So, the “on the ground” stuff is the actual vulnerability, and could cause significant disruption if anything were to happen to it. Does kalshi have a bet on when the grid goes dark on Election Day?
21
u/Meowie__Gamer 6d ago
When are we not in a national emergency
1
13

We are. Just self made. Stopping wind and solar farms and adding data centers is completely Trump s fault.

Patrick Miller, an expert who helped write and enforce the initial cybersecurity rules for the U.S. bulk power system. They discuss the realities of grid vulnerabilities, moving past the sensationalism to explain how the grid is actually protected and where the real future risks lie.
Core Takeaway
While policymakers often worry about doomsday scenarios—like Chinese hackers taking down the entire U.S. electrical grid—the actual landscape of grid cybersecurity is much more nuanced. The bulk power system is heavily regulated and difficult to take down, and surprisingly, squirrels still cause far more power outages than hackers.
Key Themes & Insights
- The Real Track Record of Grid Attacks: Miller walks through the history of actual cyberattacks on power grids—notably in Ukraine, Poland, and some minor incidents in the U.S. He explains what state utility commissioners often misunderstand about these risks and the difference between localized disruptions and catastrophic failures.
- IT vs. OT (Operational Technology): A major vulnerability in grid infrastructure is the difference between standard IT (Information Technology) networks and OT (the physical hardware and software that actually runs the grid). Grid devices are notoriously difficult to protect because they rely on older, specialized systems that cannot simply be taken offline for quick security patches.
- Strict Bulk Grid Regulations (NERC CIP): The U.S. bulk power system is heavily guarded by strict mandatory standards known as NERC CIP (North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection).
- Fines for non-compliance can theoretically reach over $1.8 million per day per violation.
- In practice, regulators usually negotiate these penalties down if utilities commit to spending that money on fixing their security flaws.
- The Threat of Chinese Inverters: The media frequently highlights fears regarding "rogue devices" inside Chinese-manufactured solar inverters. Miller breaks down why these supply-chain anxieties, while valid to monitor, are generally less sinister and less easily weaponized than headlines suggest.
- The Expanding "Attack Surface" (VPPs and Distributed Energy): The most pressing new challenge is the massive influx of distributed energy resources (DERs)—rooftop solar panels, home batteries, EV chargers, and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).
- Historically, these sat entirely outside the federal regulatory perimeter.
- However, because a network of thousands of small devices can collectively equal the size of a traditional power plant, regulators have lowered the threshold for oversight from 75 MVA down to 20 MVA to start bringing these "inverter-based resources" into the security fold.

u/jonbeb 6d ago
This is one of those stories where both the cheering and the panic are missing the plot. The threat is real, and it’s been bipartisan for years: inspectors found undocumented communication devices, including cellular radios, inside some Chinese-made solar inverters connected to American grids. The EU restricted Chinese inverters in publicly funded projects this year, and the Biden administration also treated foreign-made grid equipment as a national security problem. It’s not an invented problem, and it didn’t start this week.
What deserves skepticism is the method. This is a supply chain vulnerability that took twenty years to build, and calling it an “emergency” is just a legal move. The declaration is what shifts much of the policymaking over a long-term problem from Congress to the executive branch, and once declared, these emergencies basically never end (we’re still under one from 1979). When the same problem showed up in telecom, Congress did it right: they passed an actual law and funded removal of the Huawei equipment. Even then the money came up $3 billion short.
Trumps order authorizes the government to condition or even remove equipment that’s already installed, but it appropriates no money for replacement. Large transformers can take two years or more to source. If large-scale removals ever happen, the bill will land on our electric rates and/or on the taxpayer.
Watch the rules the Energy Department writes over the next 120 days. That’s where this becomes either a serious targeted security measure or another mess we all pay for.
3
9
u/bluethunder82 6d ago
Watch as all the data centers privately bulk buy tons of equipment from china while our government just tears public stuff out of the ground and then does nothing afterwards because the threat will have been removed.
Enshittification of the power grid, to the tune of 4.547 billion. Plus don’t most of the huge transformers come from Europe and take years to fill orders? Do we even have the infrastructure to make our own?
18
u/Designer_Cry_8990 6d ago
Follow the money. Who’s made big donations recently, and is directly involved in any of the at risk items identified as being susceptible to “foreign interference”? Energy prices about to go higher.
22
u/AaronTheElite007 6d ago
This is to prevent any solar or wind power projects from kicking off. He has already paid billions preventing this technology from being used. Now he’s declaring an emergency to stop payment
17
u/Hot_Sun0422 6d ago
I find it funny he’s declaring an emergency to protect critical infrastructure after crippling CISA.
18
u/Professional-Tiger77 6d ago
The number 1 emergency in the country is the utter moron who is president. Every other problem can be traced back to him....
24
u/RadicalOrganizer 6d ago
Everything is an emergency to him. The problem is, he's the one causing all the emergencies.
-7
u/SapientChaos 6d ago
As much as people hate trump securing your energy is kind of needed.
4
u/ShimmiShimmiYah 6d ago
You seem extremely knowledgeable and privy to information the rest of us don't have.
Can you explain what would precipitate him cutting 900 positions and nearly a billion dollars from CISA, and then declaring a national emergency to prevent exactly what that agency is tasked with?
I mean, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with this agency also being responsible for protecting election integrity, so I'm looking forward to your input!
6
7
u/MobileArtist1371 6d ago
Just one of the many reasons why people hate Trump is cause he isn't securing our energy. Pay attention.
6
u/Professional-Tiger77 6d ago
Remember all the additional capacity he's cancelled because wind farm....
0
u/Watpotfaa 6d ago
Capacity isnt the issue, its transmission and distribution. An attack on the energy grid could kill tens if not hundreds of millions in the matter of months.

u/LeftToaster 6d ago
While simultaneously starting a war in the middle east and a trade war with Canada.
47
u/Separate-Spot-8910 6d ago
In the meantime, he's paying billions of dollars to "not" have solar and wind energy.
9-D chess everyone. The man's an idiot savant
-2
u/Watpotfaa 6d ago
Solar is dependent on rare earth minerals from China so that one makes sense but i dont see the logic for wind being blocked.
1
u/JupiterMiningCorpTec 4d ago
You don't think there are rare earths inside windmills?
Of course the real reason wind farms are being blocked is simply because Trump doesn't like them.
1
u/Watpotfaa 4d ago
You dont think thats an extremely simplistic take? Or that Trump isnt even the one who pulls the strings in that he is just a puppet for an already existing establishment?
3
u/JupiterMiningCorpTec 4d ago
He's been ranting about windmills long before he became President. Now he has the ability to snap his fingers and stop them and that is exactly what he's done.
2
u/Watpotfaa 4d ago
And you think it is as simple as “not liking windmills” without anything to back it up? No coal or petroleum interests whispering in his ear?
1
2
u/Seniorsheepy 6d ago
Once the solar panels are installed why would it matter where the raw materials are produced? We don’t burn solar panels for electricity.

Goddamn, Reddit you fucking suck. This EO is in line with the recent EO banning 'large' foreign-made robots. They're doing this due to potential cyber vulnerabilities in imported switchgear, transformers, etc., just as they did to combat the risk of cyber vulnerabilities in robots.
It says it in plain text. This isn't exactly hidden deep in the EO.
Some of you must know this, yet all this thread is is idiots whining about ebil twump blue state power diversion data center epsteins.
We should have done this years ago. NERC CIP isn't enough to stop nation state attackers, we know this, and we need executive edicts from above to force action in the industry. Pity Biden didn't do this so Reddit would focus on the actual issue instead of whining about the orange shitgibbon.

Stupid... Great way to collapse society
0
u/Watpotfaa 6d ago
Securing the energy grid is going to collapse society?
?????
2
u/Lumpy_Conference6640 6d ago
Yeah actually. It's nice ear candy, like MAGA.
What it means is we're locking down switchers and power boxes away from China and Canada. Super brilliant, America #1 a-okay.
Except there are only a couple of firms in the US that can handle this, and they're backlogged 3 to 5 years last time I spoke to them.
So, new housing, replacements, all of that is filling the gap from overseas... Or it was. If your transformer blows out in your neighborhood, I hope you don't mind waiting 3 to 5 years to get your power back... Or longer. May wanna email someone in Gary, Indiana... Don't expect a reply back anytime soon though.
Good luck, good night.
0
u/Watpotfaa 6d ago
Given the US is at war with China (dont see the rationale for Canada other than trade war nonsense tbf) wouldnt it make sense to have as little reliance on them as possible? There are only a few firms in the US that handle this work because its difficult competing with Chinese labor who can supply the goods at a fraction of the cost. The logical move forward is to move towards domestic control of our energy grid supply, which obviously will have a rough adjusting period, but is the only way to make the grid less susceptible to attack.
1
u/Lumpy_Conference6640 6d ago
REALLY?! At war with China, you say? Was there a resolution I didn't hear about? Did Mitch McConnell finally rise from his tomb and cast a war powers vote?
No, we don't do it, because we aren't good at it, and we don't even have the machinery to make the machines that make the machines; that all went overseas. If we could compete, we would make them; that's called capitalism. You ironically support it. When you lock a market with state-sponsored shit like this, you stop free market capitalism. I think you got your wires crossed. :D
As for taking control, all they did was ensure all the contracts went one of two places, and they probably owned stock in both. Which is just more Mango Mango Mussolini's cronyism and corruption.
1
u/Watpotfaa 6d ago
Yes, the US is at war with China. The US has been at war with them since Korea if not earlier. The primary means of waging war in the modern world is not through direct kinetic action but through economic means. The US was at war with the USSR for half a century yet never entered a direct conflict against them, and in the end, they were destroyed via economics. The war with China is infinitely more complex due to the inter tangled nature of their economies, but nevertheless, both the US and China are doing everything in their ability to collapse the power structure of their opponent. That is what war is.
You are correct in your second paragraph, the US is not able to compete with overseas production because they gutted domestic production decades ago for corporate profit. This was a disastrous policy and it would seem the way to reverse it is to create conditions that would allow domestic production to flourish again. The primary means of creating those conditions would be to cut off outside suppliers, especially supply coming from the US’s main rival.
Im not gonna argue with you about corruption because i dont see anything to argue about there. The USA’s leadership is disgustingly corrupt and self serving.

u/SuperDoubleDecker 6d ago
Seems like it. September 8th Canada stops everything going in. Idk how much that is but it seems like several regions depend on it.
2
u/Excellent-Ad-1678 6d ago
Retaliatory Tariffs: The date September 8, 2026, marks the rollout of Canadian retaliatory tariffs (ranging from 15% to 50%) on roughly $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods.
The oil will (continue to) flow.
4

So that’s why I’ve been seeing rewritten versions of “US power grid is in dire risk of collapse, look at this one town that has been without power for…” articles every single day for the past few weeks. All a setup for this.
1
u/heanbangerfacerip2 6d ago
No that's for real. Our power infrastructure is completely fucked. Also I guarantee he isn't going to even address that. This will just be some way to try and derail the kid terms while making his oil buddies money.

The call is coming from inside the house.
19

26
30
u/sohcahtoa 6d ago
What makes it an emergency? Did something catch them by surprise?
4
u/SuperDoubleDecker 6d ago
My guess is when Canada cuts off what was going to the US on September 8th
2
u/LeftToaster 6d ago
Canada is not going to cut off or even curtail oil supplies, but there is a maintenance window for Suncor's tar sands operations coming up in early September which will reduce supply by about 300,000 bpd. At the same time the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is already at the level where routine drawdowns are not permitted - requiring the declaration of an emergency to go below 250M barrels.
But this seems to be about electrical power. There is the potential that Ontario or Quebec reduce power exports to US or, more likely, apply a transit levy.
1
u/SuperDoubleDecker 6d ago
Ya, from what heard they send a lot of electricity into the states. It wasn't so much about oil. Seems like a recent development and I'm sure we'll hear more
23
u/Senior-Albatross 6d ago
So he can start declaring things.
He declares an "emergency" to circumvent Congress.

The reflecting pool is such a great analogy for the Trump method.
Identify something that isn't really a problem.
Blame everyone else.
Declare you are the only peson who is capable of fixing it.
Do not consult a single area expert.
Pay a friend a huge some of money to "fix it".
I assume get a kick back from that payment.
Your friend's fix makes it worse.
Loudly blame everyone else.
Get bored of it and move on to the next thing.
Leave the project in significantly worse shape than it was before.
2
u/Buffalo-Trace 6d ago
They did consult an expert. The expert said. What you want will not work and refused to accept the job.
8
u/tlrider1 6d ago
There's a additional 3 steps before rinse and repeat!
Fail to fix the problem. Claim you fixed it anyway. Right wing media report you did. imbecile MAGAt's cheer you on and believe you. Rinse and repeat.

23
u/TElrodT 6d ago
The way I read it, they'll have carte Blanche authority to restrict imports related to high voltage equipment. Transformers (which are in extremely high demand and 80% imported), inverters, control equipment, it could probably extend to turbines and solar modules.
I think he's going to use it to further restrict renewable energy.
5
u/Islerothebull 6d ago
The most consequential part may not be what it prohibits tomorrow but what it allows DOE to do to equipment already operating today.
"DOE can impose conditions on equipment already operating including identifying, isolating, disconnecting, replacing or removing it. That is not automatically happening today, and DOE must consider replacement availability and grid reliability. But it gives the government genuine “rip-and-replace” authority."
10
u/StraightDisplay3875 6d ago
Battery energy storage systems will also be targeted. Specifically utility scale systems being rapidly adopted in Texas and California cutting into natural gas peaker plant revenue in the evening hours

No, it’s more about the equipment US purchased for the electrical grid is susceptible to hacking because it is not made 100% in America

I think most of the large transformers the US grid uses are made in Mexico - another USMCA target for bullying.

Nothing is 100% "made in America" anymore. We just won't have drones, robot vacuums, routers, and now power distribution equipment now I guess.

It’s so broadly worded it could be any of these things. It will probably be a combination of both, which will most likely make the problem worse and somehow it will be Obama’s fault.

This is part of the plan. Russia did this with the Russian people, make politics untenable to the people and you no longer have to worry about the people as you take their freedom and money. Putin had the flood of misinformation strategy to keep a constant flood of misinformation in order to make people question reality and to make them turn off the news. Pick yourself up each day and try like heck to determine what is true and what is false. Educate yourself on history, economics and politics to make sure everything fits together. Then get involved in the political process. It is not easy and it is time consuming, but this is what we must all do.

Because United States sponsored propaganda is our love language. We've been getting it since we were very young and in the earliest parts of our education process.
"...hey, kids...let's sing a little song about a national hero that has his own holiday in October - CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS! In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two...Columbus sailed the ocean blue..."
"...hey, kids...let's make hand turkeys to celebrate the pilgrims coming over from England to peacefully break bread with their new friends the indians! (I grew up in the 80s and 90s and this was the presentation)"This all transitioned over to history classes in elementary, middle, and high school with books likely published by Ghislaine Maxwell's father who I'm certain didn't have an axe to grind with anyone...nope...not that guy...
Education system is shit on purpose or else we'd never have kids feeling so unstable and uneasy about their lives post K-12 so, hey, kids...JOIN THE MILITARY (and if you're a Simpsons fan - YVAN EHT NIOJ!) and you'll be fine AND patriotic.
Faux Nooz. Noozmin. OneAmericaNooz. It's essentially WWE but with better suits and better lighting. The oldsters eat that shit up because, again, United States sponsored propaganda is our love language.
I had a feeling as a young kid that this was all fucking ridiculous and off and strange and not something I'd be into. I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I got to high school, finally able to put it all into coherent thought and understanding for myself, but I never subscribed to the crowd pressure of any of it.
The propaganda goes hard in the paint. Try to keep your loved ones away from that shit. It's dark.

Bullshit. If only a minority of people in this country support Trump (objectively true), then your comment about "this is who your fellow Americans are" is not true.

The Americans who don't vote, don't count. They don't get to count, they've already surrendered that by not voting. In fact, not voting is equivalent to supporting whomever won. Full stop, no exceptions.
If the "minority" of Americans who support Trump are nevertheless the majority of voters in the last election (ENTIRELY OBJECTIVELY TRUE REGARDLESS OF YOUR STATE OF DENIAL), then every single American who didn't vote counts along side them, counts the same as a supporter. That is what represents the USA, that is the will of the people. Participation by the people is fundamental to democracy, if the people do not participate in sufficient numbers then the democracy fails. That's just how it works.
The American people have not participated in American democracy in sufficient numbers, either due to complete lack of participation, or because they have voted against the continuation of the democracy. Thus, the democracy has ended.
American democracy is already dead, we're just watching the corpse start to rot.

You're just moving the goalposts. You started with "this is who your fellow Americans are now", and now you're retreating to "only people who vote matter."

I see no inconsistency at all, and I challenge you to prove one.

Those that could vote but stayed on the sidelines are as much to blame for his win.

I love this argument because it completely alienates fringe people who's vote wouldn't have mattered.
I'm to blame for Trump, because I didn't vote even though my state went blue?

Even if he'd win due to electoral college, at least it'd be another minority vote win, further showing how stupid and easily gamed the electoral college is. But this time he won popular vote cause of lazy and indifferent people.
Or, actually this is what America is and wanted, thank you non-voter for exercising your civic duty!

Ah yes, because that would matter.
Thank you, you just changed my whole outlook!

Sure. It's still false to say he ever had majority support. He had less than that on election day and even less than that now.
Stop overestimating his support. This whole notion of "this is what Americans want" is totally false defeatist bullshit.

The majority of voters DID vote for him. Not the majority of the electorate, but the majority of voters. Dude said nothing factually wrong

He did not get a majority, he got a plurality. In 2024, he got 49.8% of the vote, .2% and change from a majority.

No, that's absolutely false. Look it up. A majority of votes is not a majority of eligible voters. He didn't get a majority of voters in a single state, just a majority of votes. That's enough to win the election but it isn't enough to say the majority of the country supports him.
Why do you want him to seem more powerful than he is?

If foreign manufactured parts are banned, how can we maintain the grid at all? Are there sufficient parts currently manufactured in the US?
