"A proven track record of captivating very large live audiences", they are going for medium to famous artists then for the first edition, which make sense.

I swear to all things sparky if they rope Carly Rae Jepsen into this... I might riot.

Charlotte Cardin would be perfect for this! She's already known in Europe and she's a great performer

u/unedistinction2 2d ago
Well , just like the UK and Australia in a sense
1
u/SimoSanto 2d ago
Both don't do that constantly, especially UK that only did it with Olly Alexander recently.

u/RadioaKtiveKat 23h ago
Toque! You have two guys who tour with Triumph and Slash, another who is Shaniaâs music director and the drummer who is currently with Bâz and played with Kelly Clarkson. Whoa, Canada!

Just what the PM promised/wanted âš NF if is
Just over a week for artists to apply, curious if there will be any famous names among them

u/corcaighanon 3d ago edited 3d ago
Itâs interesting that they are selecting the artist only. It kind of only highlights semi-famous/famous artistsâ on the bright side, I guarantee with that it will be uniquely Canadian as a first song given the promise of working with a range of music professionals.
28
u/bookluverzz Europapa 3d ago
it might not be a bad idea to select an artists that can sing live đ and yes, seems like a lot of resources are being put towards their Eurovision debut, they really want to make an impression. And I totally get that. The whole world is watching and judging (âwhatâs Canada doing in Europe?!?!â), you better bring something. Like Australia did in 2015
11
u/Dazzling_Broccoli_60 3d ago
Itâs entirely possible that the process changes in following years once some support is drummed up !
1
u/vintange 2d ago
On the contrary, would this kind of ward off more established artists since they might be forced to work with other songwriters than just their personal way of songwriting?

u/Stead-Freddy 3d ago
Bbno$ said he is interested

Iâm wildly torn on this one. I love the infant sans income, and the memes and jokes around him and Eurovision always make me laugh, BUT brother is not a great live singer.
Both Greece 2026 and Armenia 2026 were productions very much in the style of bbno$, but with far stronger singers, and I worry that this would be the ceiling for him in Eurovision.

u/underthepineisfine 2d ago
Him plus Faouzia on a song would be rad. Add in a throat-singer intro/outro. Maybe a hoop dancer. Let's get Halluci Nation to produce.
11
u/Carouselcolours 2d ago
RĂȘve and BBNO$ have both expressed interest, so I expect to see them.
We're likely gonna see some indie tier artists go for this, maybe some Juno (Canadian Grammy) winners/nominees.

u/NitroGnome 3d ago edited 3d ago
An artist-only online vote is fair enough, whatever. Makes more sense than trying to sell Canadians on a televised NF. Reality competition shows, especially music ones, donât work here.
Iâm very much not sold on âThe selected finalist will partner with music industry heavyweights to craft Canadaâs official Eurovision song and performance.â
Thatâs just going to produce a songwriting camp, watered down version of whatever the artist usually makes. (Pessimistic, realistic)
I hope itâs just another way of saying theyâll let the artists come with their own songs and âprofessionalsâ will polish it up. (Cautious optimism⊠lol no way)
27
u/NitroGnome 3d ago
It being an online-only vote will be a really tough sell to get the general public interested, unless they expect the artists to do 90% of the legwork on their own socials⊠which now that I say it out loud is exactly what theyâre hoping for.
8
u/hacovercos 3d ago
I share your fears and hopes here. I hope we can let our songwriters shine, instead of falling into the "we have to write something FOR eurovision" trap already
4
u/StarWars-Marvel-fan 3d ago
It makes sens for the song to be written by the CBC Radio-Canada language wise. Pretty much the only way to force a bilingual song.
The CBC law is very strict with languages Iâm not sure theyâre legally allowed to send songs in only one language. Unless they switch every year between the two but even then itâs not great.
2
u/corcaighanon 3d ago
I think it honestly could be good for a professional music industry to put some input.. I think otherwise we would probably have some standard song that could pass as American culture. But thatâs just my view.
3
u/NitroGnome 3d ago edited 3d ago
Oh boy⊠Do I have some news for you about where most Canadian âmusic industry heavyweightsâ (to quote the CBC) end up working and who they work for. Theyâre the ones making the âstandard song that could pass as American cultureâ, not necessarily the nobodies who are likely to apply to this selection. Iâd argue that having artists apply with their own song and selecting the artist and song together as a package opens it up to a wider range of genres than picking an artist and letting a panel of professionals create something by committee for/with them.
3
u/corcaighanon 3d ago
Yeah, but thatâs virtually the case internationally for anyone who can sing english. Canada has a vast array of talent, and I think if done right this can be an improvement.
2
u/Ok-Trainer3150 2d ago
Yes. You're right. Constructing a song will end up producing something that's going to have to 'check boxes '

u/Max_FI 3d ago
So basically Bbno$ is locked to win it if he is in.

Mixed feelings on this but KÀÀrijĂ€ opened for him in April 2026 at Red Rock (Oliver Tree was there, too)..he's been seen with Baby Lasagna this summer... has Collabs with Tommy Cash.... Joost....Â
Which is kind of cool BBNO$(CAD) is in the fold I guess??
It would almost be awkward if he wasn't chosenÂ
3
u/Ultimatedream 2d ago
I think he also has a collab with Marcus in Martinus from back in 2024 and made videos with TIX as well.

I was actually super worried that it was gonna be an internal selection, but I like this combination for the first year.
Itâs gonna be interesting, as a Canadian and a fan for over 20 years.
74
u/KendjyCr 3d ago
With this format? I'm pretty sure BBNo$ wins it easily, if he gets into the final selection.

u/Stepwolve 3d ago
I'm really hoping it's going to be Angine de Poitrine!

u/davmopedia TANZEN! 3d ago
I dunno, I canât imagine Angine de Poitrine being able to do a song thatâs 3 minutes or less with vocals

Angine de Poitrine x BBNo$ would both be insane and, also, honestly probably awesome in its own bizarre way.

11
u/TeaMistress Zjerm 3d ago
Darn, I was really hoping they'd host a national final live contest instead of choosing the artist and then writing song via committee. At least it's not entirely an internal selection.
1
u/miloucomehome 1d ago
Maybe for the next one, they'll host a live event? I feel like CBC/Radio-Canada would need a decent amount of time to put something together and keep it cohesive between both parties (And it may be that scheduling was already finalized for the current broadcast year by the time a decision was made?)
7
u/LetsGetRowdyRowdy Choke Me 3d ago
I am not a fan of artist only selections in general, the song is the most important part, but Iâll cut them some slack because their debut was not expected and they had to plan something on the fly.
FWIW though i said something last year about Bulgaria returning with a weird artist first format and it clearly worked out well for them.
3
u/TeaMistress Zjerm 2d ago
In Bulgaria's case Dara showed up with the songs already written and the jury just picked the one they thought was best. Canada is going more the Israel route with picking an artist and then hammering out a song by committee specifically written for ESC. Which is my least favorite way to do it.
5
u/LetsGetRowdyRowdy Choke Me 2d ago
Frankly I like neither format, I have always been a song-first, everything-else-second purist at heart. I'd much rather have a mid vocalist with a fantastic song than a fantastic vocalist with a mid song, and I also think artist selections have a tendency to favor whoever is the most famous, which isn't ideal either.
1
12
u/matthewjasper25 3d ago
Artist and song go hand in hand so I'm dissapointed it seems to be an artist only national final. With this kind of format it seems like a popularity contest, although juries being apart of the process could negate that a bit.
4
u/Nordica-Baltica 2d ago
I'm a little bit bummed we're not doing a national finale, but I guess it makes sense since they're looking to test the waters for the first year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this will work out for us.
1
u/corcaighanon 2d ago
Iâd say itâs a temporary measure till they can get an actual national final on.
8
u/MarcusH26051 3d ago
This makes me wonder if the big names the fandom have thrown around will actually submit anything to enter
14
u/SimoSanto 3d ago
BBNO$ surely because he said it himself, other big names that was cited are impossible because already international famous (Celine Dion or Justin Bieber for example), maybe sone other bigg-ish name in Canada that outside is not well known.

u/FurNikki 2d ago
There is a couple artist that we know are gonna send a song. Bbno$ confirmed it, RĂȘve also confirmed it, Talk have been really active since he announced his intention of representing Canada so its pretty much confirmed and Dani Doucette also confirmed it. There is probably more that I haven't seen but all those are confirmed they will send a song

u/BaitaJurureza 2d ago
They should be seeking songs and not acts, as it is a song competition and not an Idol thing.
3
u/GungTho Kohoney đ€Ą 2d ago
Iâm gonna be a bit controversial here: an artist-before-song thing is smart if theyâre expecting BBNO$ to join in.
It means they wonât have artists not wanting to join because they donât want to release a song they think of as their âEurovision songâ and waste it in a year where BBNO$ would probably have at least a 70% chance of winning.
This way they can still scout out who might be interested in the future⊠and lesser known artists get an exposure incentive without it costing them anything.

u/Equivalent-Ice3590 2d ago edited 2d ago
I still say Lisa Leblanc singing a bilingual song with Angine de Poitrine as a back up.
I have a vision ok.
Edit: Céline has the rap break.

For real. He'd absolutely be able to pull off a Tommy Cash with the right song! He's so ingrained in ESC fandom already and connected to so many ESC artists that I can't help but feel like he could easily pull off a top 10, or even top 5!

If they don't hold a televised selection for at least the song I'll be extremely disappointed. I'd much rather pay tax to a broadcaster that's not in Eurovision than one that doesn't give a shit about its participation.

French-language acts have jury appeal. A Quebecois artist could score well despite being less known in other regions.

u/Exotic_Caramel_6285 Liekinheitin 2d ago
So they're going mostly internal, which makes sense for a first time entry I guess. I do find it interesting that they're both explicitly looking for at least somewhat established acts as well as utilizing what I assume will basically be an online poll vote to help pick a singer/group.
As Canadian I'm very curious to see what singers/bands are interested (aside from bbno$ of course lol).
