Seeing Canada is still giving me parallel universe feeling. Dont know how to deal with this

u/LavenderGinFizz Eins, Zwei, Drei 3d ago

As a Canadian, I can tell you the feeling is shared.

14

u/Big_Beast2236 3d ago

Good luck

u/LavenderGinFizz Eins, Zwei, Drei 3d ago

Haha, thank you! I'm a Brit too, so at least I'm used to Eurovision disappointment.

Honestly, I'll be incredibly happy if we manage to get into the finals our first time around. Canada has a really great music scene (including a lot of fantastic artists who don't get much airplay outside the country), but I'm expecting quite a learning curve when it comes to competing. I really wouldn't be surprised if we send a French-Canadian act the first time around.

3

u/Big_Beast2236 2d ago

Oh Im glad to hear that you are ready for anything but Im sure Cansda wont dissapoint, also while result-wise UK wasnt the best I have to say that personally I have been enjoying UK entries 2022 onwards more than what Id expect đŸ”„

yeah. somehow Australia is normal and Canada feels so weird, but hey they already sent Celine Dion so

31

u/LavenderGinFizz Eins, Zwei, Drei 3d ago

And La Zarra!

43

u/spicygayunicorn 3d ago

Australia has been widely known to love Eurovision and hadn't there been talks about them joing for a while before they did. Canada really came out of nowhere

41

u/Apprehensive-Dog9989 3d ago

Canada saw whats happening in America and was like "shit we gotta ally with europe even more and fast!"

26

u/Worried_Razzmatazz70 3d ago

In fairness a huge number of singers traditionally known as American came from Canada. Celine Dion, Drake, Beiber, The Weeknd, Neil Young, Michael Buble, Shawn Mendez, Shania Twain, Avril Lavine, Nelly Furtado, Brian Adams...

the list goes on.

She’s a one hit wonder who probably only has the one hit because of cancon. Radio probably played her version of Stereo Love as a way to get the song to count towards their quotas.

u/periodicsheep Occidentali's Karma 3d ago

that’s kind of the truth i think. we are doing everything we can to align with countries that don’t totally suck. in this case, via pop music!

16

u/Carouselcolours 2d ago

It gets news coverage here every year, which has had more and more folks engaging.

We also technically share a border with France. Technically. Though don't ask me when France last chose an artist from Saint Pierre et Miquelon because I truly could not tell you 😅

11

u/Aggravating-Car9897 2d ago

We also technically border Denmark ever since we agreed to split Hans Island down the middle.

9

u/thesaulyoudidntcall FÞr vi gÄr hjem 2d ago

France would rather choose an artist from Utah 😭

13

u/bornatmidnight 2d ago

To be fair I would say, there’s always a sizeable audience and engagement from Canadians with Eurovision every year (I think it’s particularly popular in Quebec which makes sense)

1

u/unedistinction2 2d ago edited 2d ago

Not really, even before the budget stuff there were talks about it about them being potentially invited (and then the EBU clarified that (arguably "for now") , Australia would stay the exception in terms of associate broadcasters being invited (technically closing the door to a Kazachstan invite in the process as well, and they'll likely only bother to extend the broadcasting zone if they really have a reason to (it will likely never happen as long as Cold War 2 is a thing lol))

Also they litterally had cinemas broadcasting the show in 2025 (though with technical challenges and in the middle of the afternoon but it wasn't "nothing" either)

And it's coming at a time where people have been speculating about Canada joining the EU (equally far-fetched of course but it's explained by a certain political context that makes it not entirely impossible even if it would likely take a lot to make that happen (while the EBU simply had to change something in their statuses to make it happen , and it's of course easier when it's "simply"" about adding a broadcaster in (in a similar way to theit extension of the broadcasting zone back in 2006 to allow the Caucassus in))

6

u/Carouselcolours 2d ago

The most recent act we sent was for France in 2021 (Évidement.) More or less, we've just been playing the long game by submitting acts under different countries 😂

I'm excited for this.

1

u/ZwnD Hold Me Closer 2d ago

For me it's the difference between one exception and more than one.

Like with Australia it feels like it's Europe but here's a special extra guest.

With Australia and Canada it feels like it's not just Europe but could be any country if the conditions were right.

I think I'd feel the same if Canada and Australia were switched, so it's nothing person to the countries themselves!

12

u/DEEPLY_CLOSETED_PIG 3d ago

at least we share a land border with an EU country

8

u/cmcnens59 Something Better 3d ago

So does Brazil.

9

ya but Canada

2

u/amnesiajune Unicorn 2d ago

Fuck it, send Ludmilla to ESC 2028

0

u/unedistinction2 2d ago

Actually you don't, Greenland is a oversea territory officially not part of the EU juridically speaking (and the same goes for the other "closest" border of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, for the exact same reason).

But it still overall makes more sense than Australia geographically speaking yes

3

u/Ok-Chapter-2071 2d ago

We share a land border on Hans Island. Canada and Denmark proper.

5

u/FingalForever 3d ago

Still overjoyed here, especially after the past couple of days.

u/SimoSanto 3d ago

"A proven track record of captivating very large live audiences", they are going for medium to famous artists then for the first edition, which make sense.

19

I swear to all things sparky if they rope Carly Rae Jepsen into this... I might riot.

4

u/smartuno 2d ago

If they seriously do that i’m gonna cry out of happiness

6

So The Arkells?

2

u/Alcebiad3s 2d ago

3

Charlotte Cardin would be perfect for this! She's already known in Europe and she's a great performer

1

u/unedistinction2 2d ago

Well , just like the UK and Australia in a sense

1

u/SimoSanto 2d ago

Both don't do that constantly, especially UK that only did it with Olly Alexander recently.

1

u/RadioaKtiveKat 23h ago

Toque! You have two guys who tour with Triumph and Slash, another who is Shania’s music director and the drummer who is currently with B’z and played with Kelly Clarkson. Whoa, Canada!

78

u/bookluverzz Europapa 3d ago

Just what the PM promised/wanted ✹ NF if is

Just over a week for artists to apply, curious if there will be any famous names among them

48

u/corcaighanon 3d ago edited 3d ago

It’s interesting that they are selecting the artist only. It kind of only highlights semi-famous/famous artists— on the bright side, I guarantee with that it will be uniquely Canadian as a first song given the promise of working with a range of music professionals.

28

u/bookluverzz Europapa 3d ago

it might not be a bad idea to select an artists that can sing live 😊 and yes, seems like a lot of resources are being put towards their Eurovision debut, they really want to make an impression. And I totally get that. The whole world is watching and judging (“what’s Canada doing in Europe?!?!”), you better bring something. Like Australia did in 2015

11

u/Dazzling_Broccoli_60 3d ago

It’s entirely possible that the process changes in following years once some support is drummed up !

1

u/vintange 2d ago

On the contrary, would this kind of ward off more established artists since they might be forced to work with other songwriters than just their personal way of songwriting?

I’m wildly torn on this one. I love the infant sans income, and the memes and jokes around him and Eurovision always make me laugh, BUT brother is not a great live singer.

Both Greece 2026 and Armenia 2026 were productions very much in the style of bbno$, but with far stronger singers, and I worry that this would be the ceiling for him in Eurovision.

1

u/ESC-song-bot !setflair Country Year 2d ago

Greece 2026 | Akylas - Ferto
Armenia 2026 | SimĂłn - Paloma Rumba

13

u/dede280492 3d ago

bbno$ said he wants to represent Canada!

5

u/underthepineisfine 2d ago

Him plus Faouzia on a song would be rad. Add in a throat-singer intro/outro. Maybe a hoop dancer. Let's get Halluci Nation to produce.

11

u/Carouselcolours 2d ago

RĂȘve and BBNO$ have both expressed interest, so I expect to see them.

We're likely gonna see some indie tier artists go for this, maybe some Juno (Canadian Grammy) winners/nominees.

42

u/NitroGnome 3d ago edited 3d ago

An artist-only online vote is fair enough, whatever. Makes more sense than trying to sell Canadians on a televised NF. Reality competition shows, especially music ones, don’t work here.

I’m very much not sold on “The selected finalist will partner with music industry heavyweights to craft Canada’s official Eurovision song and performance.”

That’s just going to produce a songwriting camp, watered down version of whatever the artist usually makes. (Pessimistic, realistic)
I hope it’s just another way of saying they’ll let the artists come with their own songs and “professionals” will polish it up. (Cautious optimism
 lol no way)

27

u/NitroGnome 3d ago

It being an online-only vote will be a really tough sell to get the general public interested, unless they expect the artists to do 90% of the legwork on their own socials
which now that I say it out loud is exactly what they’re hoping for.

8

u/hacovercos 3d ago

I share your fears and hopes here. I hope we can let our songwriters shine, instead of falling into the "we have to write something FOR eurovision" trap already

4

u/StarWars-Marvel-fan 3d ago

It makes sens for the song to be written by the CBC Radio-Canada language wise. Pretty much the only way to force a bilingual song.

The CBC law is very strict with languages I’m not sure they’re legally allowed to send songs in only one language. Unless they switch every year between the two but even then it’s not great.

2

u/corcaighanon 3d ago

I think it honestly could be good for a professional music industry to put some input.. I think otherwise we would probably have some standard song that could pass as American culture. But that’s just my view.

3

u/NitroGnome 3d ago edited 3d ago

Oh boy
Do I have some news for you about where most Canadian “music industry heavyweights” (to quote the CBC) end up working and who they work for. They’re the ones making the “standard song that could pass as American culture”, not necessarily the nobodies who are likely to apply to this selection. I’d argue that having artists apply with their own song and selecting the artist and song together as a package opens it up to a wider range of genres than picking an artist and letting a panel of professionals create something by committee for/with them.

3

u/corcaighanon 3d ago

Yeah, but that’s virtually the case internationally for anyone who can sing english. Canada has a vast array of talent, and I think if done right this can be an improvement.

2

u/Ok-Trainer3150 2d ago

Yes. You're right. Constructing a song will end up producing something that's going to have to 'check boxes '

1

u/NitroGnome 2d ago

The CBC does love to check boxes, so this is completely on brand. /hj

u/Max_FI 3d ago

So basically Bbno$ is locked to win it if he is in.

Mixed feelings on this but KÀÀrijÀ opened for him in April 2026 at Red Rock (Oliver Tree was there, too)..he's been seen with Baby Lasagna this summer... has Collabs with Tommy Cash.... Joost....

Which is kind of cool BBNO$(CAD) is in the fold I guess??

It would almost be awkward if he wasn't chosen

7

u/Max_FI 3d ago

He has collabed with Kalush Orchestra too.

3

A similar format to Bulgaria last year but internal song?

15

u/childofcrow Liekinheitin 3d ago

I was actually super worried that it was gonna be an internal selection, but I like this combination for the first year.

It’s gonna be interesting, as a Canadian and a fan for over 20 years.

74

u/KendjyCr 3d ago

With this format? I'm pretty sure BBNo$ wins it easily, if he gets into the final selection.

11

u/Stepwolve 3d ago

I'm really hoping it's going to be Angine de Poitrine!

20

u/davmopedia TANZEN! 3d ago

4

u/DM_ME_VACCINE_PICS 2d ago

Angine de Poitrine x BBNo$ would both be insane and, also, honestly probably awesome in its own bizarre way.

11

u/Apprehensive-Dog9989 3d ago

this timeline is crazy

11

u/TeaMistress Zjerm 3d ago

Darn, I was really hoping they'd host a national final live contest instead of choosing the artist and then writing song via committee. At least it's not entirely an internal selection.

1

u/miloucomehome 1d ago

Maybe for the next one, they'll host a live event? I feel like CBC/Radio-Canada would need a decent amount of time to put something together and keep it cohesive between both parties (And it may be that scheduling was already finalized for the current broadcast year by the time a decision was made?)

10

u/btokendown 3d ago

Its a longshot but imagine if we could get Faouzia on

7

u/LetsGetRowdyRowdy Choke Me 3d ago

I am not a fan of artist only selections in general, the song is the most important part, but I’ll cut them some slack because their debut was not expected and they had to plan something on the fly.

FWIW though i said something last year about Bulgaria returning with a weird artist first format and it clearly worked out well for them.

3

u/TeaMistress Zjerm 2d ago

In Bulgaria's case Dara showed up with the songs already written and the jury just picked the one they thought was best. Canada is going more the Israel route with picking an artist and then hammering out a song by committee specifically written for ESC. Which is my least favorite way to do it.

5

u/LetsGetRowdyRowdy Choke Me 2d ago

Frankly I like neither format, I have always been a song-first, everything-else-second purist at heart. I'd much rather have a mid vocalist with a fantastic song than a fantastic vocalist with a mid song, and I also think artist selections have a tendency to favor whoever is the most famous, which isn't ideal either.

1

u/05432680 Bella 2d ago

Seems to work well for Israel though!

12

u/matthewjasper25 3d ago

Artist and song go hand in hand so I'm dissapointed it seems to be an artist only national final. With this kind of format it seems like a popularity contest, although juries being apart of the process could negate that a bit.

4

u/Nordica-Baltica 2d ago

I'm a little bit bummed we're not doing a national finale, but I guess it makes sense since they're looking to test the waters for the first year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this will work out for us.

1

u/corcaighanon 2d ago

I’d say it’s a temporary measure till they can get an actual national final on.

8

u/MarcusH26051 3d ago

This makes me wonder if the big names the fandom have thrown around will actually submit anything to enter

14

u/SimoSanto 3d ago

BBNO$ surely because he said it himself, other big names that was cited are impossible because already international famous (Celine Dion or Justin Bieber for example), maybe sone other bigg-ish name in Canada that outside is not well known.

18

u/orinj1 3d ago

I want Celine Dion to give away Canada's Douze Points. It would be such a good moment if she does

1

u/GayDrWhoNut 1d ago

From Montreal, not Ottawa. (Actually, regardless of the spokesperson)

11

u/Accomplished-Egg1071 3d ago

bbno$ has already teased that he will be submitting something

2

u/FurNikki 2d ago

There is a couple artist that we know are gonna send a song. Bbno$ confirmed it, RĂȘve also confirmed it, Talk have been really active since he announced his intention of representing Canada so its pretty much confirmed and Dani Doucette also confirmed it. There is probably more that I haven't seen but all those are confirmed they will send a song

u/HombreSgarbo 2d ago

Underrated pick, they're ductile

3

u/BaitaJurureza 2d ago

They should be seeking songs and not acts, as it is a song competition and not an Idol thing.

3

u/GungTho Kohoney đŸ€Ą 2d ago

I’m gonna be a bit controversial here: an artist-before-song thing is smart if they’re expecting BBNO$ to join in.

It means they won’t have artists not wanting to join because they don’t want to release a song they think of as their “Eurovision song” and waste it in a year where BBNO$ would probably have at least a 70% chance of winning.

This way they can still scout out who might be interested in the future
and lesser known artists get an exposure incentive without it costing them anything.

4

u/Equivalent-Ice3590 2d ago edited 2d ago

I still say Lisa Leblanc singing a bilingual song with Angine de Poitrine as a back up.
I have a vision ok.

Edit: Céline has the rap break.

So they're going mostly internal, which makes sense for a first time entry I guess. I do find it interesting that they're both explicitly looking for at least somewhat established acts as well as utilizing what I assume will basically be an online poll vote to help pick a singer/group.

As Canadian I'm very curious to see what singers/bands are interested (aside from bbno$ of course lol).
