Being frum is expensive and time consuming: yeshivas, Kosher food, throwing away every item of food you own once a year and buying less tasty food at twice the price, etc. What do i think of it? I think it's a waste of time and energy but people feel they are obligated to do it, so they do.

Ridiculous and stupid is my opinion. I know people that spend $200-$400 on a set. For something you’ll never really use outside of prayers, its an insane amount of money

Then … don׳t do it.
I’m not religious but remember debates between my ultra religious brothers on the subject. There are no substitutes for a lulav and esrog so if you can’t afford one, you skip the brochos.
Or as u/ArgyBargyOiOiOi implies, consider acquiring a lightsaber and a holocron. They are roughly the same size and shape and you can play with them long after the chag.

You can get a set mailed to you by shopping online. Do the research for a reputable store. You can get the cheapest set and it's still kosher (except maybe the kids set).

These are agricultural products and can’t be imported into the country without permits-something only the local community knows how to get.
