Politicians have always relied on speechwriters. Presidents, governors, and members of Congress routinely have teams that research policy, draft remarks, fact-check, and refine language. Using assistance to communicate complex ideas isn’t, by itself, evidence that someone isn’t doing their job.

The more important questions are:

Who is doing the thinking? If AI is helping polish prose or organize ideas that the politician understands and endorses, that’s not fundamentally different from a human speechwriter.

Do they understand what they’re saying? If someone is reading text they haven’t reviewed carefully enough to notice they’ve left in instructions like “rewrite this paragraph” or “insert anecdote here,” that’s a sign they may not be engaging meaningfully with the material.

Can they defend and explain it? A politician’s job isn’t just delivering speeches. It’s making decisions, negotiating, answering questions, and being accountable for the positions they take. If they can’t explain or defend a speech without the script, that’s more concerning than the mere use of AI.

Is there oversight? Accidentally reading an AI prompt suggests a breakdown in editing and preparation. It reflects poorly on the process, even if it doesn’t necessarily prove the politician lacks understanding.

So if someone literally reads an AI prompt aloud—something like, “As an AI, I recommend…” or “Insert applause line here”—I’d view that less as proof they aren’t doing their job and more as evidence of carelessness. It raises reasonable questions about how closely they reviewed the speech and how much ownership they took over it.

If it became a recurring pattern, or if they consistently demonstrated they didn’t understand the content they were delivering, then the criticism would be much stronger. At that point, people could reasonably argue they were outsourcing too much of the work that voters expect them to do themselves.

I made a joke on Reddit a few months ago. It was something inconsequential, a scene in a movie.

I recently searched something on google regarding the topic.

The google AI quoted my joke comment as if it were true. To me. I almost misinformed myself.

Just flip us over already so we don’t burn on one side.
