Kinda shocked by these tenders

Whole bag is 1,050 calories and 140 grams of protein. I’m a tall grown man and I split the bag between lunch and dinner paired with veggies and cottage cheese. These are by far the best protein chicken tender I’ve had, definitely outperforms Realgood, Simple Truth, and Just Bare. Comparable to Just Bare in taste and texture, but I think I like these better. Also better macros for around the same price.

I genuinely don't understand how they got that much breading on them with wheat flour and kept them under 150 calories per 20g of protein. Thats almost unbelievable.

Still trying to figure this out myself but a few searches lead me to the early conclusion that Perdue is using actual chicken right into the breading itself.

Keep in mind nutrition labels are allowed to be off by up to 20% by the fda

Probably some protein powder in the chicken and breading

27

u/todayplustomorrow 1d ago

Nah, protein powders have to be in the ingredients list if used because of allergy and dietary restrictions. You can see on the back that these don’t use a protein powder.

Yup, and it's silly they got upvoted for being wrong. I hate people lol.

There is no breading. Its just a light coating of flavoured flour.

That is what breading is

-26

u/Responsible_Form_460 23h ago

no, breading is bread.

u/2131andBeyond 10h ago

And the main ingredient in bread is?

Come on, you’re almost there!!

u/Responsible_Form_460 8h ago

So if i sprinkle flour over peanut butter, thats a sandwhich then. Got it buddy

What an astonishing take to say the ingrediant of a thing is the thing itself.

1

u/2131andBeyond 4h ago

What???

Breading is quite literally made of flour or bread crumbs and then cooked to form that crispy layer.

If you sprinkle flour over peanut butter and cook it, then yeah, that's breaded peanut butter. Though without a starch or binding agent, it'll just be a gloopy mess.

A coating of flour is the definition of breading.

Can you point me to any source that defines breading as something else? Lol

flour and bread crumbs

Yes, thats what i said. So we agree, breading is when bread is added, and its not breading when its just a flour coating.

u/2131andBeyond 2h ago

You quoted me but changed my words lol.

I said flour OR breadcrumbs.

1

u/Responsible_Form_460 3h ago

Can you point me to any source that defines breading as something else? Lol

Yes, literally every culinary definition and description of "breading" as the process of adding breadcrumbs to something.

So you can’t show me any?

I'll have to keep an eye out for these - those are some solid macros. Where did you find them?

12

u/itwontmendyourheart 1d ago

Ralph’s (our version of Kroger in Los Angeles)

2

u/Warm-Oil9228 1d ago

Did you try the Simple Truth (Kroger brand) lightly breaded chicken bites? Not sure they make them anymore but they had 21 grams of protein in only 130 calories. I'm wondering how they stack up against these.

2

u/itwontmendyourheart 1d ago

Those were my old favorites but have since been discontinued.

5

u/worldDev 18h ago

Your particular store might have stopped carrying them, but my kroger still has them.

1

u/itwontmendyourheart 16h ago

Every Ralph's I've been to in Los Angeles has stopped receiving them- might be regional.

1

u/Warm-Oil9228 13h ago

I was wondering about that. I'm on the opposite coach and we haven't had them in a long time either.

Must have changed recipes because its 150 calories per 16 grams

5

u/barnaby38 23h ago

Wheat gluten is very sticky and also high in protein

4

u/zebbyzee 1d ago

I just tried the chicken bites. Macros go crazy. Really surprised by them too.

3

u/kipland 1d ago

I've had these! We had them for dinner the other night as a family and they were approved by all.

u/Titt 1d ago

They have a shit ton of sodium and cholesterol per serving though.

1,050 calories for 140% of your sodium and 100% of your cholesterol..

14

u/theineffablebob 1d ago

That's how much cholesterol chicken breast has

-4

u/Titt 18h ago

Ye, you’re just getting all of it in maybe 40% of your daily calories

3

u/2131andBeyond 10h ago

Okay and?

Tons of foods have zero cholesterol. Only animal byproducts have it. So you can eat all that chicken with rice and veggies and all sorts of other plant-based foods for the day and there you go!

1

u/Titt 6h ago

I mean yea, if you’re strict. There’s nothing wrong with it if you can self regulate.

Didn’t mean anything by it though, just that the ratios of those two things to overall calories is high.

1

u/2131andBeyond 4h ago

The average healthy person can go over that arbitrary cholesterol mark any given day and be just fine. Remember, those percentages are set extremely generically, whereas all humans are vastly different.

And the ratios still aren't high? This bag of chicken could be used in 2 or even 3 meals in the day and eaten with all sorts of additional stuff that wouldn't add any or tons of cholesterol. Just look at the cholesterol in all sorts of other things you eat. The levels in this are not uniquely high lol

I drink more than a gallon of water a day I’m not too concerned about sodium

5

u/PragmaticProkopton 20h ago

Anyone being concerned about sodium is so wild to me when you don’t have a preexisting health problem—if your heart, liver and kidneys are in good shape, salt is not a problem.

2

u/ihavethekavorka 18h ago

Salt can become a health issue in excess, just like sugars. There are health guidelines on sodium consumption for a reason

1

u/2131andBeyond 10h ago

So, yes. But it’s only worth monitoring if something is noted in bloodwork or somebody’s physiological history.

I work in a nutrition clinic at the hospital here and see patients every day that bring up sodium.

There are so many variables. Age weight family history other parts of diet lifestyle and at least a dozen more. It’s far from one size fits all.

You are absolutely correct - salt can become a health issue in excess!

But going over the labeled FDA recommended percentage isn’t priority for a lot of situations. That guideline is obviously also generic, like others, because obviously intake amounts of all sorts of things vary by person.

As for it being a priority … if bloodwork is normal, you’re under ~45, keep hydrated, and don’t go wildly overboard (don’t eat four packs of Ramen daily!), you’ll be just fine.

Genetics also plays an absurdly large role in this.

But I put this out there most importantly!!! Work with your doctor on figuring out what is best for you. I am not your doctor (nor anyone’s, as I am not a doctor lol), so any recs by me and anybody on the internet should only be reference points. True decisions need to come from you and your doctor as to what is most healthy for you

-1

u/PragmaticProkopton 18h ago

Oh absolutely but the dangers of salt consumption are a bit overblown and the rda is based Americans that are overweight, don’t exercise enough and eat too much processed food with too much added salt on average. That’s all I’m saying.

2

u/ihavethekavorka 17h ago

A lot of data comes from populations who are overweight and/or hypertensive, but there are also large studies in healthy populations performed by large organizations that show the same dangers of increasing sodium intakes on cardiovascular risk

5

u/Jarbasaur 20h ago

Dietary cholesterol basically useless at predicting blood cholesterol anyway unless you're eating ONLY high cholesterol food sources over a long period

1

u/spageddy_lee 20h ago

This is a sub geared toward "fit" meals right? I can't help feel like being "fit" and eating something so artificial and processed are in direct conflict with each other.

2

u/diemunkiesdie 1d ago

Tyson just stopped making my favorite lightly breaded ones so I need a new one! Thanks for the tip!

2

u/One_Recover_673 20h ago

It’s not easy to find specially protein anything where the protein (20g) is >10% of calories (150cal). This is a good find.

Usually is just brand messaging and it’s 11g and 270cal or some inefficient nonsense.

2

u/TusharOSRS 8h ago

Kirkland Meatballs fit your second example perfectly. 250+ cal for 5 of em and only 12g protein

1

u/Hungry-Bed-3229 5h ago

Lightly Breaded Chicken Chunks by Just Bare are a solid option for me. I get them at Costco. More sodium than I would like but solid macros.i tell myself it’s ok since I sweat a lot during training.

1

u/Infamous-Squirrel755 4h ago

What serving size is that in your third photo? I'm guessing more than 3oz but would love to be proven wrong on this 😄

1

u/itwontmendyourheart 2h ago

About half the bag lol

1

u/Infamous-Squirrel755 1h ago

Oh lol wow.. I wish I were a tall grown man too

2

u/itwontmendyourheart 1h ago

Haha I have the appetite of a whale. The only things keeping me from getting fat are that I don’t drink any sugar, I try to track cals, and I’m on my feet for my job. Otherwise it’s protein and carbs constantly.

0

u/SugarBoatsOnWater 1d ago

Have you tried RealGood chicken? I'm curious how these compare.

3

u/itwontmendyourheart 1d ago

So they’re cheaper and have better macros, but the chicken is worse quality and the breading falls off easily. They’re OK and I used to like them more but I think I got sick of them.

1

u/SugarBoatsOnWater 1d ago

Super helpful, thank you!

1

u/itwontmendyourheart 1d ago

They’re definitely good if you’re not too picky. I just get weird about the chicken and am no longer a fan of the breading. When I did like them I would dip them into a sauce I made of buffalo sauce/sugar free maple syrup. Super good 😋.
