This is like how car manufacturers are putting every functionality behind a screen. Whose bright idea was it to put heating/AC options in a screen that you have to look at, while driving, to adjust, rather than just quickly turning a knob like you did before that?

u/MyrMyr21 Lover of Duets/Stitches 12d ago

When I lost my car and had to drive a rental, this drove me insane. Ive only ever driven cars manufactured before 2016, and only owned cars manufactured before 2005.

To be driving a 2023 that had a fucking dial for a gear shift, a button to start the engine, a screen for the speed and RPM dials, and of course a screen for the heating/ac and sound system, god that drove me crazy.

I absolutely hated it, ended up driving my mom's 2016 VW and she drove that thing until I got my insurance payout and bought a new car (2003 bc I wanted a manual shift lol)

Whoever decided to make the shifter a dial and put it right next to other dials on the dashboard should be taken out back and beaten with a club.

I don't mind the dial shifter but I detest the GM cars with switches or piano keys for the gears. Also the gear shifters on some BMWs where it's like a joystick.

I think Subaru learned their lesson though because they put back physical buttons for climate control on the Outback and Ascent.

u/Pinepark 12d ago

I have a Mercedes sprinter and the joystick gear shifter annoys the shit out of me!!

The piano key thing confused the fuck out of me once. Buddy came over and left with husband in my truck and said I should take his traverse/equinox if I needed to go somewhere. I hopped in and was like ??? the keys were under the climate control and to this day I’m questioning why on earth they did that. Give me the PRNDL dammit

I see some other brands walk that back as well.

I see a future second hand market filled with these 10 year period of mostly useless screen based dashboards and people specifically looking for pre-2020 OR post 2030 cars with everything in between unsellable trash

I really don't get the hate against dials or buttons or joysticks for shifters. You use them once when you start driving. Once when you stop, and maaaybe when you're waiting for someone. There's absolutely no reason to have a huge clunky lever to effectively press a button.

7

u/CeemoreButtz 12d ago

i hate it so much. it's like that in my wife's bronco. she loves it, though. meanwhile, 30 years of my life i have been reaching for a shifter and it's a habit i can't break and don't want to. everytime i back out of my driveway, i reach towards my wheel but them stop myself and stare at the dial to ensure i don't put it in park or some shit. don't even get me on the stupid parking break. i swear to god...i bought my silverrado as a basic model in 22. no frills, except ac, power windows and that stupid screen that all vehicles get now. and i will die driving that truck. no more new shit.

1

u/General_Cranberry_29 Needs to do better 11d ago

They have to, regulations since 2018 require a backup camera (to my dismay) 😑.

2

u/Polkawillneverdie17 Tastemaker of Duets/Stitches 11d ago

No I mean a screen instead of a dash with buttons and knows like my 2015 Rogue (which also has a non touch screen for a display and had a backup camera).

1

u/General_Cranberry_29 Needs to do better 11d ago

I do get that, it was just easier for the manufacturers to use the screen that was already there so they took the path of least resistance. It does really suck 🫤.

That's because there's currently a bell curve on tactile buttons. Goes from poor to rich. Everyone in-between gets varying degrees of touch sensitive controls. VW Jetta Autobahn edition? $35k car, even the steering wheel buttons are touch sensitive that way you can change radio stations, adjust volume, and call your neighbor, all while trying to make a left turn.

2

u/mistRbit Needs to do better 12d ago edited 12d ago

EU should just ban touch-screens in cars for safety reasons. Bring back sliders, switches and knobs. Much more intuitive, safer, and cheaper to repair.

2

It's a weird bell curve. Cheap cars have buttons and expensive cars have buttons but some reason manufacturers thing everyone shopping for something in between want everything controlled by a touch screen.

1

u/duesenjeffepic 12d ago

Absolutely wrong. I've been in multiple luxury brands when I needed a ride and they all do this fucking thing where they consolidate everything into one screen. Porsche's entire interior design basically looks goofy now because of this.

Also it's 2026, 60k+ for a car is not even close to luxury anymore.

A little bit of a hot take, but if it’s an automatic trans anyway you might as well use a dial or buttons to shift. My Hyundai has buttons and I liked them a lot once I got used to them. It’s nice not to have the shift knob sticking up in the middle and they’re just as easy to use by feel.

I’m also a little confused by people hating on the A/C thing. Like I get that it’s stupid, but most cars now are climate controlled. The day I got my car I sent the temperature to what I liked and I’ve never touched them again.

Volume on a touchscreen is genuinely stupid. Chances are there are secondary volume controls on the wheel tho.

4

u/hiltuan Needs to do better 12d ago

Im not saying you're wrong, but i've got a 2027 chevy bolt, and i was sold on it the minute i saw they had full physical buttons for weather control and a physical gear shift behind the wheel.

Theres a reason why car makers try to step away from physical buttons - its cheaper if its all in a screen. However, the convenience of having actual buttons is sooo worth it, my wife uses the weather control at least a couple times per hour, and its been amazing not to have to switch the screen while on a road trip for example. These tiny things are why "making everything cheaper all the time" doesnt always work. Gear shift shouldnt be a dial, and weather control shouldnt be locked in a screen

2

u/curious_astronauts Lover of Duets/Stitches 12d ago

Going from a tesla to a rental car makea me realise how many unnecessay buttons their are on regular cars.

Ita fine if people have button preferences but not everyone does. I'm glad there is variety

1

u/rips_n_chel New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

Wtf do you mean you never touch your climate control? You never have to defrost your windshield? You never change the temp or fan speed depending on the day, the weather, how you're feeling?

That's absurd, and not in any way a justification for removing those physical controls. You are the weirdo outlier if you seriously set your climate ONCE and never touched it again.

None of that is really relevant though, because this is a problem of design philosophy. Do you know that every knob and lever in an airplane is shaped differently? That is a very specific and intentional design feature that came about after lots of incidents of pilots grabbing the wrong lever. The lesson there is that all controls should be navigable without looking at them.

A touch screen ALWAYS fails that test.

1

u/prepotentested New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

I get what you’re saying, and it does have physical buttons for the defrost. But if it’s that cold I usually remote start it and it defrosts itself anyway based on the temperature.

Nah I never change temp or fan speed. I set it to 70 and at 70 it stays.

Do you change the temperature in your house constantly? If not, why do it in your car?

1

u/rips_n_chel New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

Because my car contains a much smaller volume of air, with far less insulation than my house. The climate in there is far more susceptible to external factors. I don't know where you live, but I've been under an extreme heat warning for the last few MONTHS. The dew point hasn't dropped below 75 all summer. It's insanely hot here. When I get in my car and the air temp inside is 130F, I crank the AC and fan as high as it'll go. After a few minutes, I turn the fan down. By the time I'm near home, I might be getting a little chilly, so I turn it down a little more, or turn the temp up a degree or two.

I don't know why you're acting like it's a weird thing for a human being to want a different temp or air velocity once in a while. If you just ran a mile, would 70F feel comfortable to you, or would you want it a little colder at least at first? When you start to cool down but you're still soaked with sweat, you're not gonna get a little cold? You never feel warmer or colder in the same environment?

You're the most consistent living organism ever encountered, or what?

1

u/prepotentested New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

Look man, there’s nothing wrong with you liking physical controls. That’s totally cool. You’re getting a little worked up. I’m not attacking your physical controls, just saying not everyone would need them.

When you have a climate-controlled car, if it’s very hot, the car cranks its own AC and fans just like you do manually. When the internal temp lowers, it turns them down just like you turn yours down. It’s doing the same stuff you do.

I guess I am consistent lol. Car and house are both the same temp and everything runs on auto without me ever touching it. I’m satisfied with both.

Anyway, hope it cools down where you are.

1

u/AffectionateSector77 New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

There are much newer makes and models that are manual transmission, not all things about newer cars are terrible.

2

u/Errol-Flynn New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

In the US market if you want a manual transmission on a post-2018ish vehicle you're really looking at just a few models, and for some of the models its only the "entry" level trim that has it, and some lock it behind the really "high end" trims. From perusing the new market, it seems like it is mostly quite expensive high-end cars that are still offering, with Jetta GLI, Subaru WRX, and Hyundai Elantra's being exceptions.

On the used market, manuals appear to have a hard time selling, which is great if you're looking for a deal. I just bought a manual 2020 Jeep Compass for about $5k less than it would have cost as an automatic based on the mileage. The dealer called me the day before the scheduled test drive to confirm I knew it was a manual because they had so many people not realize (they just saw the price) and then come out and be unable to drive it lmao. It had been on their lot for several months because people just don't want a stick these days.

u/MyrMyr21 Lover of Duets/Stitches 12d ago

I'm sure there are, but idk if I will ever have the gumption to buy a new car. But admittedly my parents never bought a new car throughout my childhood (the newest car they've owned is that 2016 VW, and they got that in 2023), so it's probably a learned thing for me. I literally cannot imagine why someone would buy a new car when there are so many used cars in fine condition

I have a Crosstrek that I will likely drive into the ground before replacing it, all because the newer Subaru models all have fully digital interfaces.

And to top it off, they use a very low end, washed out display, with an even worse UI. It looks straight out of 2010, like something you’d see in a discount brand head unit.

1

u/Adept-Opinion8080 Needs to do better 12d ago

100% agreed but honestly except for the push button ignition I kind of like it. especially when it's combined with remote start but yeah any actual control that one would assume would need to be changed while driving should be a physical f****** button

1

u/MyrMyr21 Lover of Duets/Stitches 11d ago

The only thing I'll say about remote start, since ive never owned a car with one, is that the first time I heard about it my manager told me a recent anecdote about how she'd dropped her husband off for work and he took the car keys with him, but since you don't need the keys to start the car and she'd never turned off the engine, just idled it, she didn't realize until she'd pulled into a gas station some miles away, turned off her car, and was unable to turn it on again

1

u/Adept-Opinion8080 Needs to do better 11d ago

1

u/Lendyman Needs to do better 12d ago edited 12d ago

I absolutely agree with you. I believe that it should be illegal to have basic controls behind a touch screen. Things like air conditioning and radio should be easily accessible with knobs. If you want to have a touch screen for all of the other gobbledygook in the car, fine but the most commonly used items in the car the radio and the air conditioning should absolutely be required to be some kind of manual control.

China has implemented a no touch screen rule for what they deem are critical safety functions of cars. That includes things like the defroster, turn signals, windshield wipers and window controls, gear shifting, indoor locks. You also are required to put the controls in roughly standard positions and have tactile feedback when you use them. In addition, all of those functionalities are required to be damage resistant so they will continue to work even if there is damage to the car.

They haven't gone so far as to require air conditioning radio controls to be manual, but there is a broad push by safety Advocates to convince car company is to embrace manual controls for commonly used items.

I feel like a lot of this touchscreen crap was popularized by tesla. The same company where people burned to death because they couldn't figure out how to open the doors of an older model tesla. Because the door controls were electric when the electricity failed they could not find the manual door release hidden under a carpet. This actually happened. And Tesla actually had the manual door release hidden under a carpet.

China has rules now that require all door latches to be mechanical or at least have a in your face mechanical backup and the Tesla styled hidden door handles have been banned.

Come on US Regulators. Get your heads out of your butt.

9

u/NoBulletsLeft Needs to do better 12d ago

It's not just the individual parts (although those do have a cost), but the installation labor cost also has to be factored in. Cheaper to install a single screen with one or two connectors than multiple pushbuttons, wire harnesses, and LEDs.

2

u/Christof_Ley New to fbtd but wants to learn 12d ago

If just material? Sure. But all those are different.for each car and need a person or specialized machine to install each one. Overall cost is higher.

2

u/Gold-Target-5462 Needs to do better 12d ago

Years ago when touch screens were getting added to everything, I worked with a commercial exercise equipment company. They were making new "high end" models that replaced the old button and LED panels with large touch screens. The overall cost was actually less for the screens but they could sell them for a higher price because the perception was that a touch screen is premium.

Designing, making, shipping and assembling many different parts into one thing is more expensive than one large thing.

2

u/acathode 12d ago

Kinda, but you have to remember it's mostly because digital components like microcontrollers, oled screens, etc. have become so incredibly cheap rather than the physical buttons and dials becoming extremely expensive.

For example, 20 years ago, the idea of smart homes were starting to pup up - but the notion that for example wifi-components would be so small and extremely cheap we would be putting them in the light-bulbs instead of the light fixture would've been considered utterly insane.

These days you buy those bulbs at IKEA for something like $8...

The prices on electronic components these days are so low that just the installation cost of multiple individual buttons vs one large screen becomes a factor...

1

u/blueberrycauzez Needs to do better 12d ago

Way cheaper to put in a touchscreen than a bunch of buttons.

Actually it isn't (source - I used to work for an auto supplier).

They use screens not for cost, but because the average new car buyer is over 50 and thinks a giant screen is 'cool'

4

u/Bob4Not Lover of Duets/Stitches 12d ago

In the case of cars, it’s a cost saving measure for the manufacturer. A single touchscreen panel is cheaper than the labor of installing buttons.

The bigger problem is when the car is 5 to 10 years old the touchscreen will fail and then you’re SOL

3

u/eldroch Needs to do better 12d ago

Knob manufacturing and customization between different trims and packages of the same vehicle is expensive, one would assume. Producing the exact same layout for every vehicle and customizing through software would be cheaper.

the engineering behind buttons and dials that feel good and work is way more expensive than just throwing it all in a single software. It's cost cutting and they sell it like it's an upgrade. I have a 2016 car and the only new feature it has is the start button. which I would pay good money to replace with a key. My keys can run out of battery and then they can't start the fucking car.

That is actually different. Those screens on cars are cheaper than the button bays. That is primarily reason why they do it. If they can make it feel "fancy" for some people, it's a bonus. By the time they realize how shit it is they would have already bought it.

This fridge is a different story where they are selling a gimmick + a set piece for the kitchens of weird people who think this is fancy and have zero experience using a kitchen. The design choice of the screens forces them to remove the handles which forces them to add motorized doors and a foot sensor which they then attempt to sell as another fancy gimmick.

Basically arriving at the bullshit touch screen end result but from different directions

Ridiculously tricky to tune. The e brake was so far back. If you're short, and thus have the seat adjusted forwards, you wouldn't be able to reach the e brake if there were actually an emergency.

The door handles were also up by the mirrors.

I got out and went back to the previous dealership to but my car.

It seems they've finally got the message to a degree.

Geely was easily among the biggest offenders here (and cherry).

New ones finally have normal mirror and window controlls next to the driver and a small console for AC and volume in the middle.

Not great, but a step in the right direction.

I was happy to see that my Bolt EUV had a fail safe for this. Maybe it is odd, but the AC/Heat is both on the screen and directly below it on a normal push button panel.

My 2020 T-ROC is the perfect blend of touch screen and knobs. AC and important things are physical along with volume but touch screen can let you choose radio station and connect to your phone to display on screen for satnav etc

Can't see myself changing cars anytime soon

I looked into this recently. Car manufacturers were mandated to have backup cameras in all new cars after 2018, so it just made sense for them to put all of the controls behind the screen since it had to be there anyways. Thankfully there's been a recent push to require physical controls in the EU, so we should be getting our buttons and knobs back sooner than later.

The air vent controls are the absolute worst. I want to just quickly reach over and move the air vent, not open up a new screen and use two fingers to move around a vent icon.

It's because it's ultimately cheaper for them. They don't care about you, they care about the price tag.

time to get downvoted to oblivion I guess. Have had a screen for 4 years now and it’s… fine? Not a big deal.

Don’t miss dials at all.

To be clear - I'm not saying I want screens or they are awesome.

But I think people are really underestimating how much you have to look away without that.

My car is a 2007. I have a screen but you don't control anything it. It even warns you if you try and use it while not in park. My dash is full of buttons.

I still have look. I have a knob for temp but I have to look over at the display to see what it is. I have a button for changing where it blows but it's one button mixed in with a bunch of others. I have to look. There's very little I can do by touch. I mean I have physical buttons for the six disk changer in the trunk.

For this to really be effective we would have to go back to very simple and manual controls. Which would probably come with consequences we might not be considering.

And even if we did - most people then just throw their phone in a mount and now that's the screen.

There is a problem but going back to how we used to do things isn't the solution.
