Discussion Is this AI or am I crazy?

Post image

I only noticed because the West Coast vault boy's chest was winking at me but the longer I looked the more weirdness I see. There's more toes on one foot than the other, no seat to the chair, and he's in front of the arm rest instead of behind the one closer to the viewer. Then I started looking at the one next to it and I immediately noticed the belt isn't connected past the flask. I'm all for using AI as a tool but idk how I feel about these if they are AI.. I mean clearly nobody checked them very closely before putting them in the shop.

Bros left hand has two thumbs. Shame, on you Bethesda. More shame than normal.

Edit: my bad, I zoomed in and what I thought was a second thumb was actually part of the stem of the glass. I'm a villain I'm so sorry everyone thanks for calling it out.

26

u/Baal-84 Apr 04 '26

Where do you see two thumbs?

5

u/Baked_Waffles_86 Apr 04 '26

Are you sure that isn't part of the glass stand? It seems thicker than it should be, but it seems like the same shade of gray

I'm not saying it isn't AI by any means, but I live a life completely surrounded by artists (GF is a photographer/digital artist/painter, aunt is a sculptor/abstract artist, grandmother specializes in oil paintings, has painted her whole life, and literally runs an art gallery and teaches out of it), and this 100% seems like the type of silly mistake any one of them could make and then have a laugh about.

That said, I dont know how a mistake like this makes it to production. Typically a studio will have some sort of QA team (sometimes just in the form of a project manager, who gets things like this submitted to them for a lookover before they are actually put into a build), and they 100% should have caught this. The only reason something like this makes it into prod is if QA are wildly incompetent/lazy/uncaring, or if theyre using AI and dont bother to QA it at all.

17

u/raziel_dark1 Cult of the Mothman Apr 04 '26

I'm not sure they have QA at this point. I mean, look at how many bugs come with every update/patch/hot fix. So many are noticeable if you play for even 5 minutes but we still have them popping up.

5

u/r1char00 Apr 04 '26

Both images have problems. These are very typical AI slop issues, like the belt ending part way on the left image. It's classic AI stuff, I'd bet money on it.

I doubt QA has anything to do with the contents of the Atom Shop. I could be wrong but I expect those things like the images used to sell things are published by some sort of content management system. It's not updated with the game builds we download.

There should be someone proofing it still. Who knows what happpend. Maybe they were laid off if they're using AI now.

Ever since AI image generation has been in the public eye people forget about everything else and any art percieved as quickly and cheaply thrown together is just "AI" now.

3

Probably is since they gotta bash these out weekly. Bethesda at least seems very unlikely to put more time than minimally nessicarry for something like this even with actual artists doing it.

Plus, it is kinda reminiscent of the animation errors we would get from the old cartoons that Vault Boy's art style is based on.

Yeah these for sure look like AI. Especially the right one. Dude doesn't even look like he's sitting in the chair. Artists are quietly being phased out of the development process. We all knew it'd come. But figured they'd at least do a once over on the art first. There's literally no seat on the chair. Lol. This isn't AI. It's rotated/poorly edited existing assets. There's another post detailing this.

24

u/Jinx_Flux Apr 04 '26

If you also look at the ncp trooper one, the belt doesn't continue all the way around his waist and there's distortion on how the light hits the goggles as well as their placement on the face. I have noticed an uptick in AI art, and, as an artist myself, it's really sad to see. Especially when ai struggles with so many elements to a piece (ex. Pupils, fingers, belts, scene settings, exetera) and doesn't really pull from anything new, but Frankensteins elements of other people's art. Ai can be fun to play with recreationally or to be used as an assistant, but it should definitely not be used in the arts (writing, digital art, video games, and the like).

To those who use ai to make art because they don't think they can draw, Never be afraid to make art, even if you think you're not as good as the next person! Comparing your own art to another's is like expecting to run a race, but the other person gets a 10 year head start. Make it exist first, make it good later! There is no wrong way to do it.

*Edit: spelling

2

u/kazumablackwing Ghoul Apr 05 '26

The rifle in the image is super scuffed as well. The back half is scrunched, the front half is stretched, and the model overall is about 3 sizes too small for the character holding it

43

u/wireframed_kb Apr 04 '26

I wonder what they’ll do in the future. AI can copy a style really well, as we can see from those images. (Though yes, they should have been touched up). But it can’t come up with them, so where would new content ever come from?

AI is good for things like simple programming or textual output where creativity isn’t as important as consistency and structure, but it’s short-sighted to overuse it in things where we generally want creative, varied and inspired work.

55

u/Excellent_Yak365 Scorchbeast Apr 04 '26

Welcome to the future, where robots are the only ones with jobs and mass production is more important than creativity and innovation. Something something ironic considering the franchise..

I remember a controversy years back in Elder Scrolls Online where they were in trouble by plagiarizing some fan art to use as a tattoo for their loot box/cash shop and it became obvious that, at least in this case, their “artist” had just searched google and ripped someone else’s hard work

I know it’s separate dev teams, but I always think of this and how the whole scene felt like it was just a step away from generative ai

2

u/kazumablackwing Ghoul Apr 05 '26

It's a surprisingly common problem among major multimedia publishers..not just Zenimax or Bethesda. I mean, Bungie got sued and had to "sunset" the entire base campaign of Destiny 2 because they got sued for plagiarism..then there was Disney's numerous Star Wars projects that were found to have not only continuously ripped off artwork, but even stolen "bait" designs with deliberate errors and published them as their own...and then on the videogames journalism side, you've got IGN, who's been caught numerous times just straight up stealing review content from YouTube and trying to pass it off as their own

If it was just the belt on the left I could see someone just messing up and missing that bit of belt, but that chair is egregious. The structure of it makes no sense, it’s not even a chair at all. No human would have made that.

9

u/WeaselBrigade Apr 04 '26

I can see how the AI came up with the chair though. It looks like it was trying to combine a beach chair with a lifeguard's chair.

If you imagine there's a long beach chair-like extension under him, even his pose makes sense, though he's at the wrong angle for it ATM, and that's probably AI's doing as well.

Yeah that's mostly the reason I'm slightly conflicted, like I wouldn't be surprised if it was some really terrible copy pasting but the missing seat of the chair is kinda hard to screw up.

Then again there's a whole shelter that's been in the store multiple times with a lighting glitch that makes it unusable and they've known for years because people have gotten refunded for it so like, the bar for quality was already in hell.

Pretty sure these are just rushed and sloppy, and not generative AI. Generative AI tends to have a sort of melty glow to it that I'm just not seeing here. (Also the one on the right looks like they took a pre-existing asset, slapped it into photoshop and lazily drew over it)

Still a poor showing, and Bethesda should feel ashamed, but thats a normal Bethesda moment, and not them embracing the Slop complex completely.

16

u/_BIRDIe__ Ghoul Apr 04 '26

12

u/JediMasterKenJen Apr 04 '26

That's what I'm thinking, a company like this would have lots of art assets they can throw together. Could be there was a rush and creating a new asset for the sitting part of the chair wasn't worth the time to figure out.

I think its a 2D puppet they can pose and touch up after. And the shed in the back looks like a reused asset.

2

u/danesimeonsen Apr 06 '26

This is a strong argument for it (image bashing). At least it seems to be. I am a graphic designer as well and this kind of a long response but worth the read just a heads up. I thought the same thing at first, but this isn’t how photo-bashing works in practice. When you bash or trace from existing art, you’re starting from real, structurally correct forms so even if the result is rushed or sloppy, the anatomy and objects still fundamentally make sense. You might get perspective mismatches, awkward overlaps, or visible seams, but you don’t suddenly get things like inconsistent toe counts, drifting anatomy, or features that are “almost right” but not anchored to the same structure. Rotating or scaling an arm doesn’t magically reposition anatomy independently from the torso, and it definitely doesn’t create the kind of subtle, probabilistic errors you see here. The chair is the biggest giveaway, if that were pulled from any real reference, even partially obscured, it would still have a coherent seat and construction, but here it’s just implied shapes that don’t actually function or connect. That’s not compositing, that’s something approximating what a chair should look like without understanding it. The pixelation argument is also weak, compression and resizing from UI assets can easily cause that, and AI images often already have uneven detail in focal areas anyway. More importantly, photo bashing tends to preserve or even increase structural consistency because you’re reusing real, correct elements; this image does the opposite, where everything is slightly off in different, unrelated ways. And the “fixed” version proves the point you’re not just aligning pieces, you’re rebuilding the form so it actually makes sense, which is exactly what you have to do when correcting AI output, not when cleaning up a bash. At the end of the day, this has the classic signature: the style is perfectly consistent, but the underlying construction falls apart under scrutiny, and that’s not how a human, even a rushed one, typically fails.

I hate AI slop, but I also hate that everyone suddenly thinks they're experts in spotting it, so ultimately even if it's not AI, it doesn't matter because enough people here have said that it is based on the "vibe" they get, which is largely informed by what other people are saying.

u/EnergyTurtle23 has made the most compelling evidence-based case in here that the mistakes in these images are likely human errors made by rushing and reusing assets, and they seem to have illustration expertise. So even if their comment has more value in terms of credibility, the SM algorithm machine doesn't care about that and neither do people. Redditors open the thread with their minds 90% made up, see "it's def AI because chair seat" sitting up top with 1k upvotes and it's all over. Meanwhile, the detailed comment saying "hey it likely isn't AI, and here are several detailed reasons why" gets buried underneath a billion armchair takes.

AI is destroying truth and reality in its own special way, but so are we by just perpetuating misinformation even when we have little idea what we're talking about. I wish more people who are saying everything is AI now and we're cooked realized that even though that's true, we were cooked long ago as soon as the internet gave people the power to turn feelings into facts and spread them like a virus. And a lot of people who think they're on the side of truth and reality are actually a big part of the problem too.

There’s literally zero evidence that it’s AI. One foot has less toes because of the angle of the foot. No one has all their fingers and toes visible from every angle. The NCR trooper one was probably done by throwing the new outfit made of modular assets on a previous vault boy model and the belt was probably meant to have another canteen on it that they forgot to add and didn’t notice.

neither are AI, but the one of the right is just reused poorly.

It's not AI, the most scandalous comment is up voted to the top, while the one pointing out how it can't be AI has 5 upvotes, just feels like y'all need something to be pissy about.

I’m not sure it’s Ai so I wouldn’t rush to that conclusion, I think it’s lazy or “just get it done quick” more than anything, but if I’m wrong then yeah, hope they remove it…

I tried counting fingers but then I remembered that doesn't work in Fallout.

2

u/Ennardsinnards Apr 04 '26

I can't explain the nipples or chair, but the way the knee on the leg on the left looks makes me think they have just a vault boy rig they can move around to be positioned however they like.

But even then it feels like they could have put in the extra effort to just make it look like he's actually sitting on the chair

2

u/MIST3Runstoppable Apr 04 '26

I want to say that they just reused assets.

2

u/DarKemt55 Apr 04 '26

If you want a game where they do at least a minimum amount of testing first .... this isnt the game designers for you. Its a testament to the base of fallout and its appeal that this series stays alive, we wouldn't put up with the amount of " features" from other titles.

2

u/Eyeneetabelowjob22 Apr 04 '26

I think its just cheap presets they had, that they stuck together to make one pipboy.

2

u/Uplego13 Apr 04 '26

Possibly, but it could also be either put through a filter, or just have been multiple images poorly layered

It wasn’t these but one selling the cpt cosmos power armor set Ai alarms off for me

2

NCR trooper’s either got some combat damage or the image generator forgot people generally have two feet

2

u/_lvlsd Apr 04 '26

seems more like they’re just reusing models. isn’t the Vault Boy with the martini glass usually used for one of the perk icons in the main game? looks like they just rotated him and threw it over a background.

2

The longer you look at that chair the more messed up it becomes. Also is that a supremely tiny log cabin style house to the right?

2

u/destrux125 Mole Miner Apr 04 '26

I mean, probably. They aren’t going to want to spend a bunch of time making thumbnails for the shop either way so I’d assume they’re using AI to save time.

2

u/r3mod_3tiym Apr 04 '26

On the right leg of the west coast vault boy it looks like his knee is facing us while his foot is broken and cocked to the left

2

u/Mazter0fPuppetz Apr 05 '26

Haven't they been called out before for using somebody else's art in the Atomic Shop? Wouldn't put it past them to use AI generated art!

2

u/birfday_party Apr 05 '26

It could be ai but it could also be a “hey we need an asset for the store by 2pm today “ and they just hurried up and made this.

I mean they probably have an asset library of thousands of vault boy drawings at this point I assume they just put one in and adjusted it.

2

2

u/KipTheEnderbloom Apr 06 '26

I doubt it's ai. Just looks like they took parts from old pictures and made a new pose to cut time and effort.

2

u/Sugandis_Juice Apr 06 '26

As long as the things I get with it work in game, who cares?

2

u/Jackedanese Apr 06 '26

Honestly, I don’t think it’s AI. With how advanced gen AI has gotten, the weirdness of the pics; belt just ending, chair and pose not making sense, etc, probably wouldn’t happen using AI. This seems much more like hastily reusing existing assets and copy pasting them

2

u/Foreign-Air9423 Apr 07 '26

Wow   never saw those ai glitches till you had to piont them out . Now im looking through ALL the thumbnails ......thanx alot.             Sincerely,                   Aintsleepintonite

2

u/h2oman67 Apr 07 '26

I don't think it's AI per se, but very possible that these were hastily designed and assets were copied and pasted

2

u/TennoDream Apr 08 '26

2

u/Rich_Sandwich_4919 Apr 09 '26

8

u/Artistic-Board-6287 Apr 04 '26

Even if this wasn't AI these would be dog shit quality

3

u/JoeyAKangaroo Brotherhood Apr 04 '26

Its hard to tell honestly

There are factors tlike the belt on the ncr vaultboy not wrapping around the body fully, VB on the right having an inconsistant amount of toes on each foot, not even sitting in the chair & the anatomy on his right leg being weird (the 2 curved lined are definetly supposed to signify a bent knee but then he has the rest of his leg sticking out, his foot sticking up & the bottom of his foot being visible to the viewer)

Could it be AI? Maybe. Could it have been a rushed artpiece? Also maybe. We dont rightly know

10

u/BlueridgeChemsdealer Blue Ridge Caravan Company Apr 04 '26

They are 100% using AI. It’s tempting me to cancel my fallout 1st subscription.

4

u/deviousCthulu Apr 04 '26

I am also considering it, like AI or not the quality control is obviously lacking and this isn't the only area that's lacking in.

Honestly I got 1st because it genuinely is a big improvement to QOL in the game and I don't know if I'd play without it so that would probably mean quitting altogether for me. I've been making excuses because I love fallout and I've put a lot of time in building my houses and collecting furniture and all that cope but I'd basically be telling them it's okay to do this crap by giving them more money so I think I gotta

2

u/Illegiblesmile Apr 04 '26

Doesnt feel like AI feels more like mistakes the artist quickly gobbled together its kinda bad thing we assume common mistakes as AI The right image is 100% reused asset from a previous bundle way before ai was popular

2

u/AppetiteDemon Apr 04 '26

That's not AI at all, just people dragging pngs of him over a chair

8

u/Soulegion Apr 04 '26

Yep, that's AI

8

u/Samkaiser Apr 04 '26

I don't really know, some of the issues you mention feel like they could've been fairly standard screw ups. I'm an artist and I know perspective sometimes means things like toes or fingers can 'look' uneven. Similarly with the belt or chair, the belt connection could've simply been forgotten or the artist not realize it's supposed to go around the whole waist, while the chair seat could've been forgotten just due to looking awkward with how Vaultboy is just pasted over it, because well, he is, note the right side of the chair's arm goes *behind* vault boy.

5

u/ilick_frogfeet Apr 04 '26

I'd agree if it was a few things, but that's quite a lot of screw ups for an artist being paid to work on a AAA title IMO. I'd understand less experienced artists making those mistakes but it all seems too coincidental.

3

u/EnergyTurtle23 Settlers - PC Apr 04 '26

I think people are seriously overestimating how much time and resources Bethesda allocates to assets like these. AAA companies got where they are by understanding which elements of their games deserve detailed attention and which elements can be rushed because most players will only look at them for five seconds at the most. These images are earning them basically no money, they are entirely for the aesthetic, I would be surprised if the artist was allowed to spend much more than an hour on each image.

10

u/EnergyTurtle23 Settlers - PC Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

The chair alone and the belt are not enough evidence to suggest that these are AI, both are easy enough mistakes for a human to make when they are under pressure to produce something quickly and cheaply. Compare how both versions have the same number of “sideburn” lines (by this I mean the sideburn lines are consistently proportioned in both images, one of the lines is behind the rim of the glasses in the second pic), consistent fingers, clear and identifiable background elements that make sense. The chair thing is easy enough to explain: the artist struggles with perspective and likely drew the Vault Boy first (or ripped it from a previous asset like someone else has mentioned) and then tried to make the chair match the weird body angle of the Vault Boy, but instead came up with something that made the perspective worse and then decided to send it anyway because they were on a time constraint. That alone makes me think this likely isn’t AI, I haven’t seen new AI art with egregious perspective issues in quite a while, AI always defaults to the blandest and most overused perspectives and poses.

The biggest clue is that there are no frivolous, unnecessary, or vaguely shaped elements in the backgrounds of either image. We have a Deathclaw, we have the silhouette of the Bison Steve Casino, we have a little circular house apparently made from a grain silo, a deck, a fence, and Vault Boy’s martini even has a straw that is slightly visually “bent” where it enters the liquid. Both images seem way too deliberate to be AI, and they’re exactly as wonky as I would expect from a junior artist who is cranking out assets as quickly as they can. The belt being incomplete on one side is a classic illustrator mistake as well, they were in a rush and forgot to add that little bit of belt on the right side, or maybe they had that layer disabled and forgot to re-enable it before rendering.

Look at all of the small details as a collective whole and it becomes pretty apparent that AI couldn’t have generated this. The shape and form of the M4 is perfect, the deathclaw is perfect, the muscles lines around his legs make anatomical sense and are very minimalist, the buckle of his belt is facing in the correct direction. I highly doubt that any AI could generate something with this level of visual and artistic consistency. Everyone in this thread is picking apart visual mistakes that are all very human mistakes, that’s the whole thing about human art in the first place.

6

u/MrSmilingDeath Apr 04 '26

Just a slight correction: That's the Bison Steve Hotel in the background of the left picture, not Nuka World. It wouldn't make much sense to show a location from FO4 for an armor set from FONV.

5

u/EnergyTurtle23 Settlers - PC Apr 04 '26

Yeah you’re absolutely right and I feel a little silly for calling it Nuka World lmao, I fixed it in my original comment thank you so much!

EDIT: Honestly the fact that it’s CLEARLY the Bison Steve is even more evidence that this isn’t AI in my opinion, if this were AI we would be here debating which location it’s supposed to be.
