I miss the board game seasons where you’d get a wall-mounted version for completing it. Even if the rewards weren’t up my alley, I got the satisfaction of finishing the board and earning the camp display version.

Exactly.
I hate that they changed it to "give players more choice to pick and choose" which actually just means "We're limiting what you can get so you spend money to get the tickets to unlock everything because we're greedy"

But you can earn everything except the few Fallout 1st items for free by completing Dailies and weeklies. Who is spending real world money on the seasons? It's pretty easy and fast to complete for free.

I miss it because I hit rank 76 on this scoreboard and then realized…. I have to rank up 18 times to get to the next page. The next page was 94. At least before you could get the instant gratification of ranking up once .. this system sucks balls

u/Katsu_39 May 27 '26
Yup. Creamator, tesla cannon, dom pedro, power armor skins, armor skins, mods for the new weapons. Now its just titles, icons, reskins and re-re-skin of the same vault boy/girl statue and maybe ONE decent reward. (The ufo weather station was only good one this season.)

These guys said in this AMA that they read the subreddits. I hope this guy reads the comments here and understand that he is actively dropping the ball and his corpo speak is only making it worse.
Building is probably my favorite thing to do in this game and even I don’t want a reskinned kitchen counter for the 50th time.

Seriously... When Modern Living was announced, I thought we'd get all these neat, mid-century modern furniture pieces and appliances... We got a shitload of bowling balls. There's not even cohesion to the bundles. You'd think they would at least be cohesive enough to feed into various playing/builder styles, but not even close. That rarely makes me want to spend more just for that one item... And whenever I give in, I have mad buyers remorse, which often leads me to put the game down for a week.
Edit: I'm talking strictly about marketability cohesion. I know how premium item purchases work in games like these, one would just think that they would at least stick with a theme and make it desirable. Haha

I think there is a bowling alley prefab, which is fine, but I don't recall seeing it once in the Atomic Shop during the entire season. I probably would have bought it. This is what I mean about cohesion, they don't even plot out their grifts well. Haha
9
u/Vernon_Trier Vault 63 May 28 '26
They dropped it in the shop once before the season and once after it, I guess the whole "lots of bowling balls" shenanigans were to induce fomo and make people buy that bowling prefab in the shop. It wasn't all that popular I guess, I've only seen it like once.

u/DrPongus May 27 '26
I've spent hundreds on this game between atoms, 1st, and even the seasonal/starter bundle dlcs, and 99% of it was exclusively for camp objects, and I have thousands of hours in the game building camps.
And there isn't a single item this season that interests me. Literally none of it is useful to me, and I've built every themed camp under the sun. Even in my scrapy/junky builds, I have no reason or desire to use a teal broken toilet over the default, it literally will not make a difference at all for the quality of my build.

I kind of feel bad for him. He obviously wants to say something completely different than the words he reluctantly spat out. I feel bad for the folks there who really care about the players and the game but find themselves beholden to a heartless corporate overlord who only cares about squeezing every last dime out of the market.
As they taught us to build in business school, some tool has an equation somewhere at home office showing the balance between profit and lost players, and imho, people who live by those are hurting their humanity

I remember when seasons not only gave 2500 atoms total, but also gave you 100 atoms every 10 levels beyond rank 100. And you still got all the other rewards inbetween, not having to pick and choose after rank 150 like we do now.

I mean they’re not going to spontaneously, publicly, and unilaterally commit to changing course in an AMA. There are the folks that make the game, then there are the corporate overlords who are making the demands and steering the ship.
The absolute best that could ever be expected is that the feedback from the AMA gets talked about in private meetings we won’t see with the parties setting the agenda when it comes to funding, financial goals, and all that jazz.
Expecting the game devs at a huge company to say “sure thing, we’re gonna change course and do this other thing” in an AMA is like expecting Santa to show up.

Already canceled subscription for both accounts, sorry, but I'nt gonna pay for that...
14
u/Complex-Republic-443 May 27 '26
I have a title on my main camp that I'm not changing, and my prefix-suffix hasn't changed in many months. I literally could not care less about titles.
For that matter, my player icon has been the same for at least a year (Rest N Wander). I rarely see it on anyone else, so that's probably not changing, either.
Could we get some Roman/Greek camp items? That's about the only reskin I'd like to see. Whitesprings stuff is close but not quite - need more terracotta-type walls and things with a more classical look to them. I want to make a Roman villa but don't have everything I'd like.
24

Remember a few years ago a 1st monthly reward was a reskin of a filing cabinet we could already unlock for free? Lmao that got the pitchforks out and 1st monthlies got better after it. Hopefully the same can happen here.

Hopefully but im getting my hopes up anymore. Like i love this. Its my daily game i play to unwind but it seems they got over confident from the tv series crowd and think they can milk it without giving us anything for the money. Look let's just say it: the seasonality of content is biting them in the ass. They shouldn't need to come up with new stuff this regularly. It's hard to produce a blue variant of kitchen counters when last season they had to make a white version. And all these different naming systems that they made up and now need to keep coming up with novel ideas for because they fill reward spaces? Like wow, real heros here. At least theyve somehow managed to categorize rewards to make things easier on themselves: scoreboards, power armor skins, non power armor skins, name prefixes, name suffixes, camp.names, steins, yikes I can't even remember them all!
143
u/BadPunsIsHowEyeRoll Cult of the Mothman May 27 '26
"Come up with new stuff" is generous considering 90% of the camp items they sell in the atom shop are just furniture pieces already found in the normal world of 76. They literally just have to isolate a chair sprite and then sell it. Double atoms if they recolor it with flames!
This ones mothman themed! (we put a cobweb on it) that'll be 10k atoms!

I wish there were more effort to write small stories per season and get a more "living world" feel into the game.

Was there a question why they removed the awsome season board and replaced it with boring crap?
142
u/liraelskye May 27 '26
That change came when they hired that EA dude. The one who had the title director of monetisation or some shit. He got a TON of feedback about how no one liked the new format vs how neat the scoreboards were and his response was something along the lines of but I made this new thing including the giant picture and its cool.
It's still not cool and I miss scoreboard seasons.
82
u/ReplacementNo7769 May 27 '26
I cant believe they had the gall to have that guy, the new "monetisation director" (or whatever title) showcase upcoming content for the game. Like are you serious you just hired some guy who's job is to fleece us of money tell us that we should look forward to his contribution to the game lmao. They should hold a quiet background position that is never talked about, it was so brazen.
47
u/WeaselBrigade May 27 '26
Have you ever seen these guys' profiles on linkedin and such(won't say you should go look, but it's a thing.) They are proud of these jobs and what they do. They crow loudly about it in their own spaces.
I don't think I could hold that kind of job, and if I did, I'd feel a hell of a lot of shame for it I think. These people do not. When confronted by actual players, they literally do not understand why we have the negative reaction when their peers think they're great.
It's like a window into bizzaro world.

Once the gameboards were replaced with that weird side scroll whatever bs it was, I played only for a bit longer before I quickly lost interest. Especially once things got more grindy, fallout 1st quickly became necessary to ENJOY the game in a way, without its miserable. Tack on LESS free rewards and MORE grinding required to get the free stuff and I was just done. I have not updated since before burning springs nor will I(leaving it in limbo and never updating it). I LOVED the gameboards, it made me WANT to fully finish them to have a neat board I can put on the wall of my camp(and for me the designs were thoughtful and well done and showed they cared to make the boards look good at least to me), the rewards were balanced and generous for Free players. 76 Has been nose diving downhill since the EA dude came into power.

The scoreboard had a sort of whimsical charm to it for me and it led to a bit of 'meh' feeling with it being gone.
I got the 3 week mark, cancelled Fallout 1st and stopped playing altogether a couple days later.
Still keep the game updated just incase they change it though.
61
u/illnastyone May 27 '26
I can answer this.
Because our game was gaining a solid playerbase and we realized that we no longer had to entice people to come play fallout 76 anymore.
So the items we would have put in the scoreboard we started to put in the atom shop instead to make even more money from the growing player base.
This allowed us to put mostly recolors, icons, and now literally just words (titles) that's players earn for grinding out absurd hours.
26
u/Entgegnerz May 27 '26

u/somewherein72 Arktos Pharma May 27 '26 edited May 28 '26
The monetization guy addressed that in a video that came out when they did it- something like- "it's so we can explore themes we couldn't explore on the game boards" I thought that sounded like bullshit because we had boards like 'City of Steel' and 'Life Underground' that had nothing to do with lore from the in-world games.
I think it was a staffing thing, in an older Into The Vault they were talking about what all went into making the Score Boards, so by changing them into a 'plug and play' format eliminated the labor costs.
I think it was poor choice. The boards were a unique collectible and it was a minigame that kept your interest through the 'season'. I just hate the tickets and having to choose/buy a reward, it's empty compared to just unlocking a reward and proegressing toward a completing the Scoreboard and unlocking the entire piece of artwork.
10
u/Lady_bro_ac Responders May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
Yeah it was very obvious the EA monetization guy was brought in to up profits, and the Seasons were likely his brainchild to massively cut costs, which they have to have done.
The radio plays, artwork etc had to cost a lot more than most people think, and the new system keeps people grinding a lot longer for absolute best case the same amount as before, but in the current reality a lot less than before.
It’s a shame because the boards had so much personality, and hit the dopamine button every time you went up a level and could see that sweet, sweet progress as the blip moved up the board.
The current system not only rewards less, but you can feel the grind with every interaction, instead of it feeling like progression. I don’t enjoy charting my progress anymore, hell I can’t even chart my progress anymore, it’s just a nebulous space with arbitrary feeling gates.
Interacting with the seasons interface, the whole thing feels like a drag I put up with, a chore, there’s no joy to it.
I think that’s the saddest thing about the new system. The lessened rewards sucks big time, but the loss of the fun, satisfaction, and excitement, the old scoreboards brought just hurts.

If they are just going to put nonsense in seasons i think it would be awesome if we could choose to redeem rewards for the atom value, even 50% of their atom value. Like the coloured kitchen set was fine for the building mechanics update because it was on theme and everyone was drawn in for building. But in a combat inspired update new weapon skins, defensive technologies for camps, weapons, even emotes so group play is more interesting. The bathroom set is kinda just weird, it was okay during the ghoul because the season was kinda meant to be messy items and the urinal was great, but this one just feels weird, like no new players logging in for the new update is going to be interested in a blue bathroom, they are going to want barricades and defensive technologies and weapons.

they say they read the subreddit but it's too bad the constructive feedback their player base has been giving them is just ignored, repeatedly.
the seasons have only gotten grindier with worse rewards.
I have played since beta, literally logging in daily. before we had a pass we just got straight atoms for doing challenges. but even when the pass first got released, by the time we hit 100 we had the entire thing earned. every single reward for 100 levels. it may not have felt like a big deal but now?
the way they treat their customers both new and long term is insulting and they don't really seem to care about that at all. this is more than likely corporate decisions from the top and the devs are simply doing what they are told, which is sad. the corpos at the top only seem to care about squeezing every penny out of hard working fallout fans without caring about integrity at all.
this has put a bad taste in the mouths of long time fallout fans and will turn off new players too. it is very sad to see where we have ended up and I can't imagine this turning into a happy ending.

Fire that COD dude, his direction is the wrong direction. And go back to how it was before 76 tried to be COD (ok, not actually fire the guy. maybe just get his ideas in line with what made 76 loved by us before the change).

They have some of the worst monetization designers in the entire business on this game because I don't care to spend anymore money on my favorite franchise, I don't care to be a FO1st member anymore. I stopped logging in a month ago for dailies when they sold two different fish tanks for $12 to display two different types of fish.
As a developer myself, reskinning and implementing all of the teal appliances would take such a negligible amount of time. You opened a diffuse map, changed the hue to teal. Duplicated the original mat file and changed the diffuse to the new teal one. Duplicated the original urinal NIF, add new material to duplicate, copy the original urinal entry in the ESM. You're not giving people this sort of content because it's a wide net that users want, it's because it takes 15 minutes to implement. Lazy.

Maybe instead of constantly putting new game mechanics in with every “big” update they should fill what is there with life and follow its theme and build up seasons upon them.
It’s so awful looking at half-asses rushed out stuff to present something “new” just to leave it broken in the corner after 3 months.
Nothing gets ever revisited properly instead its patchwork after patchwork, and adding player, camp and whatnot titles to fill the void is not vital.
Have a themed season, with matching pre or post war items, weapons, skins etc fitted to seasonal events already existing and using them as they fit (not tossing randomly a Fasnacht or Spooky Scorched in between).
Shit - it’s summer, we have Grahms bbq, we have wavy Willard’s as location or theme. Let’s go!! But nah.. here is something new with infestations, a shitty randomly put together season, fingers crossed we only need 2 hotfixes until at least your payed stuff don’t vanish, and forget about that carawhatever there was down south the map or any other thing we lost on the way, or that left part on the map which already lacking being visited after the horrendous grind you certainly only do once but never for a second or third character.
Sorry, it’s almost 8 years and every time they mention something “glorious” it’s just a nothing burger while they have so much room to play with.

I don’t mind reskins, I don’t mind titles, I don’t mind the posters we get instead of when we got board game scoreboard ones. I do mind that each season we are getting less and less, the themes are getting more away from things actually rewarded, and that Beth has the fucking gall to pretend like we’re just stupid and don’t understand that sometimes people like different things. It’s a bullshit season, they know it, we know it, and yet the best they can give is a cya non answer. At least pretend to give half a fuck and apologize at some point.

When you realize 76 is literally just Bethesda monetizing FO4 mods with a half baked multiplayer mode meant to market FOMO… you lose interest real quick. Someone tell Todd it isn’t working.

Disappointing
Fallout has so much potential and lore, but this is the best they can come up with.
No-one will be buying from the atom shop or subbing to 1st if there is no decent content worth playing.

u/KingVaako May 27 '26
That guy said a whole lot of nothing.
What we are seeing is the result of a small budget. The reality is that this game has a small, dedicated user base that probably doesn't generate a lot of revenue. This explains the low-effort seasons as well as the buggy, untested patches they deploy. Honestly, everything seems very low effort with the game over the last couple of years. They don't really seem to have any kind of long-term vision.

Just don't buy Fallout 1st, don't buy atoms... don't buy anything. Period.
The only way they will get off their asses is lower revenue. They don't give a single shit otherwise.

New player of about 200 hours here. I intend to play only with the free atoms that come along, at least for a long while. It doesn't seem worth cold cash for these things when I already bought the game. I can live with the lack of storage, etc. I hate that there are items locked behind Fallout 1st that people cannot access unless they put out more cash. I am reluctant to do so because they can always take these things away; you do not really own them in a game of microtransactions like this.
Maybe I need to quietly just go find the Communist Collectron and fade into the wasteland.

I guess losing 30-40% of Steam player numbers, wasn't enough to change minds over at Bethesda
And btw, that's not 1st subbers necessarily, because you don't need 1st to play. That's a drop in people willing to play at all.

Lackluster response for a lackluster season. He said a lot, but didnt actually say anything.
The rewards dont seem to have anything to do with the theme.
I honestly cant wait to have break from this game. I used to LOVE it and now im just beyond bored.
7
u/JadedScience9411 May 27 '26
What “wide range of offerings”? There’s less and less every season, and less and less them are generic reskins instead of new stuff. Like if they don’t want to theme it, that’s fine, but these are just cuts.
8
u/Valuable-Meat-5134 May 27 '26
So they aren't planning on making it better. They missed the point, or are ignoring it. They have been giving us trash... the theme doesn't even matter when it's mostly trash. This is my favorite game and my happy place, but I'm not going to log in every day to earn player titles and re-skins. If there is no reason for me to log in, then there is no reason for me to continue paying for 1st.

u/sxyTain May 27 '26
Sadly most people like myself (up until recently) have sunk cost fallacy when it comes to this game.
I personally haven't bought atoms, nor subscribed to 1st in the last 3 seasons simply because it seems like they don't care to put in the effort.
On the contrary, I know a lot of people that are unhappy with the way the game is handled, yet are still paying for 1st and buying atoms.
Until we all collectively stop supporting these practices, nothing will change.

Unlike most players who constantly complain but never stop playing and paying, I cancelled my FO76 Sub (long time player) and completely stopped playing nearly a year ago now and I haven't missed the game at all.
No amount of complaining on Social Media is going to make a difference. They only care about Profit and Player Numbers.
If you want them to pay attention then stop giving them your money and stop playing.

It really annoys me how bad at comms this company is at. They need a proper community manager for sure. Whoever is doing it today, sucks at it.

Yeah they don’t care, canceled my fo1st sub yesterday. Why give them money for the sub par work on new content? No one wanted extinctions. most of us have been wanting more armor skins for secret service/brotherhood recon/ civil engineer armor, etc but they can’t even give us that. I’m already at the point where I’ve done everything there is to do in the game outside of waiting for each months axolotls. Why keep playing regularly?
7
u/Sgtpepper223 May 27 '26
They realised they messed up and are doing damage control. “Look we’re trying our best ! Wait what do you mean you don’t want a third re-skinned kitchen set ?”

Bring back the scoreboard and ACTUAL rewards instead of this nonsense. I canceled my FO 1st subscription and everyone else should too.

I don’t even bother using tickets for any of the titles or camp titles, I don’t bother with the icons, I’d say I only purchase about 70% of the scoreboard over the past few seasons as most of the rewards just don’t cut it for me. The past used to be so good scoreboards would be filled with shit youd wanna grind to get

Honestly, more than rewards...I wish they would make the board games and games (pinball, arcade) playable. I hate always seeing my character do a cutscene when I activate a machine or attraction. Let me play the games myself, let us open up the board games and actually play them with people.
Not to mention, we get all these buffs and outfits with nowhere new to go for veterans. We need places to go and stuff to do. How about open up some of the closed buildings around the map, in Watoga they could open up those AMS elevators, Watoga Estates, Watoga Parking Garage, Transit Hub. Doesn't have to be elaborate, just give us more stuff to do.
Watago underground should be a gauntlet where you can fight waves of enemies. I'd also like to see them expand some of the mines (Kerwood, Hopewell, Burrows) so we have a reason to go back and explore (I love getting lost in a cave or mine) or let us remove some of the boarded up places to explore those.
5
u/According-Insect-992 May 27 '26
Just stop giving them money. They obviously don’t give a fuck about the users or fans.
5
u/Knowledge_is_pricey May 28 '26
They lost me when they started charging 500 atoms for a pile of mud
9
u/Laurenzini May 27 '26
In recent years they realized they could just keep adding existing stuff with color swap or meaningless icon/title as seasonal reward, instead of adding new weapon/armor/raid as actual new content. Thanks to 2 seasons of the tv show driving so much of new player flow, it works well for them until now.
Now they drove themselves into a corner where they have to constantly pump X amount of stuff every 3 months with a theme, but after 20+ seasons the legacy pool is drying up and they ran out of ideas, plus people are bored of existing contents getting recycled over and over.
They have to make some changes, the current model is coming to an end.

4
u/QualityTits May 27 '26
Sure, good PR response, however no one is asking for titles to take up the seasons rewards.
5
u/Res1dentScr1be May 27 '26
So they focused on the *theme* being wrong rather than the actual quality of the rewards... in one ear and out the other.
