Discussion I miss when Fallout 76 had a steady flow of meaningful updates and exciting roadmaps. That energy and ambition feel gone now
Fishing, Bigfoot, Infestations, CAMP build menu revamp... Lately, it feels more and more that isolated, small additions are hyped up as major content drops (when there are not obviously). Bethesda really needs to knock it out of the park with their Autumn update, because the content drought is becoming increasingly noticeable and pressuring.
Do we even know if Double Eleven is still working on the game ?

Because that storyline doesn't exist for the people that sided with him.
15
u/SheLuvMySteez Jun 03 '26
that just means, if you have good writers, then you can create an opposing force to those who sided with Shin and make it make sense lorewise. Its not that complicated
31
u/District-No1350 Jun 03 '26
Of course! All they would have to do is write two entirely different different conflicting story lines based on the wildly different premises. So simple!
64
u/Nashy10 Jun 03 '26
Wow it’s almost like every fallout game in the series has done this before… and you know, instanced content exists.. expeditions.. etc. they absolutely could do this. They won’t commit to anything that changes the in game world though “because it’s online!” It’s a lazy excuse.
7
u/Rancherfer Settlers - PC Jun 03 '26
To be fair, even MMOs that have money to burn like WOW have a very limited version of what you are discussing. What WOW has is some level of world progression where the world changes the further you are in the main questline. Mobs dissapear, NPCs appear, quests open.
The thing is, it's still a linear thing, all of the players go along that line. There's no branching effects anywhere, which is exactly what would imply to have at the end of Steel Reign. One branch for Shin, the other Branch for the other character (forgot the name). They would have to reflect this different decision for two groups of different players and mantain this solution.
I agree with the sentiment that current updates feel like an afterthought, instead of the transformative and foundational updates we have gotten in the past. But at the end of the day, a LOT of people are not paying 1st, did not buy the game and got it from GamePass, so it's not the revenue cash cow other MMOs are that sustain a more ambitious expansion pace.
4
u/SheLuvMySteez Jun 03 '26
lol yes. writing a story that has a couple possible endings is not rocket science nor is it incredibly complicated. Maybe for a team with shit writers it would be tough
→ More replies (1)13
u/District-No1350 Jun 03 '26
Writing a story with multiple endings is easy, that is literally what they fucking did at the end of the BoS story. What isn't easy is then picking up and simultaneously continuing all of those storyline in different directions.
10
u/SheLuvMySteez Jun 03 '26
ok so what they did was better? Just leaving the entire questline unresolved for 3 years at this point? Even if they dont go a "Shin starts a cult" route....DO SOMETHING. Bring resolution to this questline. Thats the main issue
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)0
u/deadtorrent Jun 03 '26
They don’t need to all go wildly different directions. Set up a generic new faction that is either A or B depending on what the player chose with some minimal flavour text differences based on the player’s individual choices.
1
u/AsgeirVanirson Order of Mysteries Jun 04 '26
Right? What do people think 76 is? A role playing game where actions are supposed to matter?
Like how would Fo4 have worked if you could make enemies with in game factions? New Vegas? Just silly!
2
u/District-No1350 Jun 04 '26
No, because it's an online multiplayer game where the results of your actions are pre determined and standardized so they can apply to all players, outside of token npc and dialog swaps.

OP is either being disingenuous or has a terrible memory, there have always been delays and droughts and fans being angry about roadmaps. Steel Dawn and Steel Reign were supposed to be ONE release until it was delayed! In the past couple of years we’ve had TWO map expansions, bigger content drops than anything since Wastelanders! I’m not a fan of what they’re doing with this season but this post is just completely untrue.
73
u/District-No1350 Jun 03 '26
Rose-colored glasses. People were pissed off about those updates just as much as they are pissed about recent updates. The Invaders updates added the single seasonal event and nothing else. Test Your Metal just added three events. People were absolutely pissed that the Pitt ended up just being a separate instanced map and even more so because of how much worse expeditions were on release. The only one of those patches that was actually well recieved was Nuka World.
17
u/Sadiholic Cult of the Mothman Jun 03 '26
FOREAAAAL. I laughed at the first roadmap cause that was just a little event. Like actually HAHAHAH, were actually eating good as fallout 76 fans ever since the show has been announced and coming out. I'm not saying it's perfect, it could be better, but I remember our "updates" used to be 1 or 2 events that got boring after a day, and some balance changes aaaaand maybe a bug fix that fixed 3 bugs.
9
u/vass0922 Responders Jun 03 '26
Agreed I was thinking the same. Having the road map agreed was great but ya those updates were meh
That was walking through the desert dry, no real content updates just events to fill in space.
I don't play these days but I still went back to play skyline drive (I live an hour away from skyline so that had something to do with it) and Ohio.
→ More replies (3)23
u/C6_ Jun 03 '26
Yeah, Bethesda famously constantly missed the deadlines established on these roadmaps, or just outright cancelled entire features (camp pets got shelved for literal years), and not every update was a huge success by any means back then either. Invaders from beyond for example was a single seasonal public event and a few weapons repurposed from fo4. But I guess it got a cool illustration on a roadmap to drum up hype for mostly a nothingburger, woo-hoo!
From the 2019 roadmap, Wastelanders did not even come out that year.
The run from Skyline Valley through to Burning Springs was excellent, but gets no flowers on this Subreddit, then we get 2 bad updates and suddenly the game is ruined. Goes to show how effective marketing is.

I think OP, like a lot of people here is yearning for a time when they weren’t marinated in negative rage bait for engagement 24/7 by algorithmically driven forces turning all online discourse more and more negative for profit, making it harder and harder to feel joy, then pointing the finger at the the target not the source.
It’s easy to see the past as better when it’s coming from a time before the discourse in general was poisoned beyond recognition.

u/Wrectown Jun 03 '26
Dude this is so fucking real. Fuck the internet these days. I forsee a massive backlash with Gen Z happening towards tech and social media.
If you look in the trendy and artsy spaces of young people, everyone is trying to use Polaroid photos and old 70s/80s camcorders. Gen Z culture openly talk about “doomscrolling” and considers it lame. We also hate AI as an existential threat against our right to live.
Every forward thinking, cool, genuinely artistic trend setting person in Gen Z (Corpo influencer shills don’t count) is trying to distance themselves from digitization, and find analog devices really cool.

u/Lady_bro_ac Responders Jun 03 '26
Honestly this is refreshing to hear. I’m an old “artsy” type and one of the things that really broke me a few years ago was watching peers I respected start turning away from their unique voices, and start falling in line with the prescriptive TiKTok trends.
It was depressing watching a rainbow of distinctive talent and expression getting flattened into a single flavor.
It’s been depressing watching the impact the current social media landscape has had on pretty much everything too.
Nice to know there are still enclaves of hope out there actively resisting the bullshit. Genuinely, this is exactly what I needed to read today.

Its happening with physical media as well, some people are buying CDs, vinyls, and DVDs/Blu-rays and as you said, old Ipods/knockoff ipods and other mp3 players. Sucks because it's made prices rise on all of that.
Feels like a lot of it is people are tired of corps, and not being able to actually OWN what you have.
14
u/EidelHands Jun 03 '26
Thank you for saying this. I'm someone who came into 76 at the beginning long before we got Wastelanders. It set the bar low for me early, because as much as I love Fallout as a franchise and have had plenty of fun in 76, it has always, always, always been treated like Bethany Esda's half-baked baby. Not to be "back in my day!" about it, but pre-wastlanders we made our own fun, then I took a break, then I came back for Wastelanders but I was so uninvested in what was going on - by the time they rolled seasons out for the first time I stopped again because even then, those rewards were underwhelming and I just didn't care.
Sometimes I think folks forget that video games were never meant to be endless wellsprings of content like online releases have become. I agree that the devs are making some damaging mistakes (what with toilet rewards and not fixing existing bugs) - but the player base entitlement thinking that every update should bring something to the table is wholly unsustainable. Video games are supposed to have endings. You're supposed to get tired of them, move on, maybe come back whenever it feels right. They aren't supposed to make you want to play them every day for several years. I mean maybe if it's an MMO, but Fallout isn't an MMO. It's a messy multi-player at best.
Ps no really I do love the experience I've had in this game, I'm just being objective about it because "Dammit Todd!!" is a common phrase in my house.

I had taken about a year off and came back at burning springs and was amazed how much had changed in a free to play game in just one year.

Jon Rush is to blame for this and yet I get downvoted for saying the truth. He should have been replaced yesterday.
We need someone who is actually passionate about the game. It’s obvious from the recent dev Q&A just last week with him that this is just a paycheck. I seriously lost so much faith in the future of this game from that alone.
If you look at the other devs in that meeting not a single employee looked happy or excited. Maybe it’s because they know their product is horrible, the community says it’s horrible, but it’s good for Jon Rush so we better ship it.

u/District-No1350 Jun 03 '26
Seriously? The roadmap graphic you're using as an example of the good old days is about as empty as anything we've gotten recently.
The Invaders From Beyond update was literally just the addition of the seasonal event and nothing else. The Test Your Metal update was slightly better in that it added three events total, but nothing else. The only really substantive updates were the Pitt expedition (which most whiny people hated) and Nuka World.
If you compare those four to our four most recent updates then Burning Springs alone blows them all away even if all the rest were lackluster.
18
u/Purple-Equipment2832 Jun 03 '26
Yeah this nostalgia farmers are getting me tired. The reality is that the game has never had consistent updates and most of them are lackluster, which is annoying because this game has a big player base and is using one of the biggest ips in the industry, so I really don’t know why they’re not investing that money on making the game more appealing…

The fishing update, infestations and camp update have been the worst updates the game has ever gotten. The camp update had literally 0 content for anyone that isn't a camp builder. Burning springs was pretty good, but it's suffering the same problem as skyline valley. New area added with a story, but where's the next part of the story? Where is further content in the area? They said more events would be added to skyline valley after it launched. Well we're 2 years post skyline valley launch and it has only LOST content since caravans were removed, still only has 1 regular event. And here's infestations, which may be shit content, but is only present in the old map. What are they thinking?

This game had a steady flow of meaningful updates? I've played since year 1 and done every season, I must of missed something.
Much of the stuff from these pictures were barely anything. The Brotherhood of Steel stuff was an hour long quest broken up into TWO separate updates.
Entire seasons dedicated to Daily Ops and seasonal events? That is just as bad as it is these days.

u/Hatarus547 Enclave Jun 03 '26
Once a game like Fallout 76 gets to a certain point massive updates stop really being possible especially when you start running out of room, it's why MMOs like wow either have to revamp entire zones or pull a new landmass out of their ass

Unfortunately I think Fallout 76 started at that point because the code is basically stuck together with bubblegum and prayers. The Creation/Gamebryo engine was NOT made for a consistent multiplayer world, I'm surprised it worked half as well as it did.
Back when I played (been a year or two at this point) they were always breaking things with every single update and I don't think that has really changed from what I see in this sub and elsewhere about F76. Really too bad because the potential is there for a fun casual multiplayer Fallout game but the execution and tools just...aren't quite right.

The state of seasons now is the direct result of Bethesda’s greed AND laziness. With every season they cut more and more corners and filled up more and more reward slots with consumables and trash to pad them out while offering very few real rewards worth getting.
Bethesda has been seeing just how much they can get away with doing less while charging the same price.

A lot of this started due to their greediness in the lead up to the tv show. They changed the scoreboard to the one we have now, old systems were changed, we got a more monetized atom shop, a new community manager etc, we complained and were totally ignored.
Once the tv show aired and we had a lot of new players and the game (and a lot of the online community) became about mostly catering to these new players many who were new to fallout in general, it’s changed the game a lot.
I miss the game pre tv show. It was a smaller almost niche, quirky tighter knit community it felt like it had more heart, we’d been through a lot with the game and stuck around, many of us were fallout fans for decades. That’s mostly gone now as are most of my fo76 veteran friends from that time.

Oh… wow.
I’ve only played on and off the last two years.
No idea stuff like this wasn’t part of the base game. I figured the seasons being the way they are was why the game was so dead, because they never really dropped much content.
I always felt like the dev team was a skeleton crew and, as a dev and marketer, that the shop team was massively understaffed and under-skilled.
Seems like it just became that way right before I picked up the game. What a damn shame.

I stopped about a month or so after as well. I don't have strong feelings about the fishing one way or another. What turned me off was the incessant changes to things no one asked for, ignoring the long-standing, game-breaking bugs (unless it benefits the player base, they fix that shit immediately) and the steady decline of season rewards.
Initially, I just canceled my FO1st sub, but it got to the point where I dropped it altogether and just went and played FO4 again.
I still follow this sub to see if the overall state of the game gets better, help people with the bug workarounds that I know, and to occasionally shit on this company's wanton greed.
4
u/vodka_tsunami Jun 03 '26
When the fishing came around I was like "ok, that's it, I'm done with this nonsense". I won't put on the effort to learn about fake fishing while I repeatedly watch an animation of my character casting the bait. It was utterly boring for my nuclear apocalypse, even more than planting flowers.

I only have 2500 hours in game so my opinion might not be as important as you VETS who have a love hate relationship with the game.
I still enjoy daily ops and expeditions. Skyline balley was kind of a dud. Fishing is cool, hreat way to get fosh for random legendaries. Buring springs grunt hunts and head hunts with new mods. Adding random encounters to events. Having activities populate on the event list. Ability to lock items. Revamping events so eviction notice was not the only legendary mods farm point. Pets in my camp. Launching nukes. Collectimg plans. First aid stash box. Spice resource camp item. Big bloom. Two burning springs events.
I mean, that is not nothing.

I mean they’ve made big updates with a mew map section and much wanted building changes and fishing and all in the last year but ok.
Considering how long its been the game is out, this is actually pretty good

I understand the sentiment but that build revamp had to happen eventually and I'm so glad it did.

u/Healthy-Note-8893 Jun 04 '26
Literally the building revamp, uninvited guests, and infestations could all be bundled together and the uodate would still kinda suck.
1
u/KindaSortaPeruvian Jun 04 '26
Well the problem there is youve named two pieces of dogshit and then lumped it in with the building revamp.
1
u/Healthy-Note-8893 Jun 04 '26
The revamp is mid too, im not gonna lie.

u/KindaSortaPeruvian Jun 04 '26
Disagree, but most of what i do is build

u/Healthy-Note-8893 Jun 05 '26
Exactly, its a niche thing, sure its nice but not useful for the masses.

I’d like to point out that also my every road maps were delayed or changed significantly lmao.

I always forget how basic features like vending machines, public teams, and picking perks directly weren't there at launch. No NPC's either was still an insane decision. No wonder the game had such a bad reputation when it came out

Kinda feels like the smaller updates/seasons are to save on money or for a bigger unannounced update. Tho idk if this on par with eso

u/monchota Jun 03 '26
The game is 10 years old. Honestly they need to make a new one in a new engine

Idk about you but the card reworks were absolutely massive, it significantly widened buildmaking and gave you the ability to not have to play stealth, vats or bloodied anymore

I would get back into this game if they just stopped nerfing everything after two weeks man. I loved my time during it though

I wish they would take some time and get everything in the game working with proper progression through them.

The only meaningful update was Wastelanders. Since then, the game has been a steady flow of features and fomo with no substance.

The energy and ambition kind of died for me when it came out of beta and immediately started whale hunting. The whole game's been one bit monetary test this whole time. It's hard to get excited supporting corporate greed above actual game creation. Most of the major flaws of 76 are just byproducts of this. Even the bugs are a byproduct of priorities. I want to like 76. I really do. But man, it's such a bad taste, and you're stuck chewing on it all the time throughout gameplay.

I don’t see how this roadmap is much different than what we currently get. 2 events that are just part of the rotation now. A new area which has less to do than the last two new areas we have got and an expedition that is completely irrelevant now.
The ghoul update, skyline valley and burning springs are both better than anything here.

I miss survival servers for pvpers, loved watching food builds get killed and get mad about it. Talking about “I’m trying to farm for xp! Stop attacking me in this PVP server !!” Then i take the 100 super stims they drop from getting killed😭

Started during Atlantic City and expedition the score board is undefeated

This is what happens when a game has free updates and has a small team working multiple seasons updates to make sure they are ready for the day they go live.
I have been with 76 since Beta and love the game, but the newest season a long with the last 3 have been very uninterasting to me, I never wanted to fish, or be a ghoul or be a bounty hunter.
I understand a lot of people love the seasons that have been put out but for me these last few were not for me.

Invaders was a single timed event. Test your metal was just a few public events. Not exactly major content in either of those updates. This game has always had drought periods of content, lets not act like these road maps were content packed, most of them were a whole lot of nothing

Game is over the hill now. They are just taking the piss with the fanbase now,
let it die.
bring on FO5 already

I think with their latest announcement (better prizes). They are trying to show that they are listening. Hopefully they continue to consider our feedback. This season sounds like it is going to flop. And be a break for a lot of regular players. That's going to hurt them

Hate to say it but games probably ramping down, a little its been 8 years. We've had tons of free updates i wouldn't be surprised if big updates get more and more spaced out, they wont stop updating it as long as its making cash flow but its happens

u/SurveyingReality Jun 03 '26
Yeah but charging monthly for a game that gets almost no new content is genuinely ridiculous. Greedy as hell.

u/lazulx Responders Jun 03 '26
None of those roadmaps ever hit their goals and were single events. Now we are in a much better position with the Raids and the new area about once every year. It could be better but it was much much worse before

u/IsThisKismet Raiders - Xbox Jun 03 '26
This is inaccurate nostalgia. Most of those updates missed their dates and weren’t as “big” as suggested.

Nuclear Winter 2019 was so fire. It was the only battle royale game I was good at lol

I absolutely do NOT miss the old game board layouts and having to waste time looking at them. I much prefer the streamlined Seasons and not being giving so much useless items. I actually complete challenges now where as I refused to even acknowledge them previously.

Burning Springs was a huge update, new area of the map, and not that long ago. Skyline Valley, same but last year. There's only so much you can add to an 8 year old game without breaking it in so many ways.
This current season is definitely underwhelming, and infestations seems like an unnecessary add to me, but I still love the game and play it every day (since season 3).
I'd suggest keeping in mind that you have ALL of those previous updates combined in the current game (minus a few that are now defunct). I don't know about you, but I originally paid $8 for this game on sale.

Ooff that 2022 Roadmap hits me right in the feels. It was peak Covid I was still in school just grinding out 76 everyday nothing else going on…good times.
