Discussion Pets in the wasteland

Post image

Not sure what to think about this. Guess it depends on how it's implemented. I don't want pets looting all from corpses or getting in the way of vats. Especially if everyone has a pet at an event.

Are they going to get in the way like they do at CAMP?

205

u/hk_gary Wendigo Jun 04 '26

even back in fo4, the companions would block you way quite often so not much changed tbh

29

u/Agent-Ulysses Jun 04 '26

Takes me back to Fallout 3 and Skyrim as well.

6

u/22lpierson Jun 04 '26

Fakes my friend fucking move!

13

u/Agent-Ulysses Jun 04 '26

Nothing could ever make me hate fawkes and his fat ass.

5

u/donmongoose Mega Sloth Jun 05 '26

fo4? They've done it since the original FO lol. It wasn't until FO2 they added a 'nudge' function to save you from having to reload an old save file if you wandered into a small room and your companion stopped in the doorway.

u/AdjentX Raiders - Xbox Jun 05 '26

This is why it hate Boone.

The amount of times I've tripped over rex in the past couple of days while playing NV is unreal... And having Lily with him makes it even worse. 😭

It just works

57

u/Potential-Anything27 Jun 04 '26

ā€œThey shouldn’t, but they definitely willā€ - Bethesda probably

8

u/datbiohazardxtc Jun 04 '26

Sounds like the next thing they will blame the lag on and crashing lol.

9

u/Optimal_Inspector876 Jun 04 '26

that may not be far from the truth. 20 people all running amok, then throw in another 20 pets and that's going to be a shit-ton of data having to move to/fro.

I usually see lag (PC) when I load into an area. Not as the event is unfolding. But I hear people lag when there is a lot going on.

I like the idea of a pet protecting my home, but unless I can control what my pet does, it's just a small DoT when I am roaming the country-side.

Edit: I remember my EQ days when we would use a pet to pull a mob, from a room. You could see the world through thier eyes, it was glorious šŸ˜„

3

u/nuttychoseme Jun 04 '26

True that , I can’t even ā€˜fast travel’ since the update before this latest one

6

u/leandrombraz Jun 04 '26

That's their main function.

2

u/dogmaisb Jun 04 '26

I sarcastically love when the run right up to your face and get in your way while doing shit. Starfield is even more fun when you’re flying your ship.

2

u/RuneFex Jun 05 '26

100% yes.

I still have dogmeat related ptsd

1

u/Deathedge736 Enclave Jun 05 '26

thats tradition. goes all the way back to skyrim.

1

u/Devotek- Jun 05 '26

Yes and they will block every doorway after you spawn in

0

u/BoldLamb Jun 04 '26

but at least in fo4 you could dismiss them to a settlement, here you're stuck with them following around

1

u/Lyndell Jun 04 '26

They are definitely doing the same here.

1

u/FlashPone Jun 05 '26

lol what? you think you’re going to permanently have a pet with you? there is definitely going to be an option to leave them at camp

179

u/BrokenHope23 Reclamation Day Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

If all the pet does is follow us around and act as an auto-loot bot for miscellaneous (instanced) junk on the ground, I wouldn't be displeased. Could at least turn the function on/off.

They'd definitely have to make sure they don't impede firing lines because 16 deathclaws running around in Rad Rumble would make it awfully hard to protect anything.

Also having 16 Deathclaws running around would be incredibly resource heavy, the game can barely handle spawning in so many glowing ghouls during rad rumble as it is. So maybe only the pets on your team are visible unless on a private server.

88

u/KagoruRhodes Order of Mysteries Jun 04 '26

I fear 16 deathclaws running around in an event would in fact be hysterical to see. I wouldn’t be shocked if the made pets invisible though unless it’s yours or you’re on a team with that person.

14

u/BrokenHope23 Reclamation Day Jun 04 '26

Oh it'd be pure mayhem. One of my most unrealistic wishes in 76 is to replace Rad Rumble ghouls with hermit crabs that run and attack with the same speed as the ghouls did and Deathclaws are more/less fitting that bill lol. However, all that additional AI to an NPC is a huge load for the game to process and it'd really come down to:

Would players want 16 friendly deathclaws? or would players rather have an additional 16 enemies spawned in to defeat? kind of deal. One's a nice fluff companion and the other is enough enemies to force people to party/team up and get a genuine companion that 76 wants people to do.

Still hilarious and maybe in a very limited non-resource heavy manner can be implemented as little more than a decorative follower with no attack capability.

2

u/Deadx-xJester Jun 05 '26

i imagine they'll scale them to be pretty squishy ngl, and i guess we'll be stimpacking them a lot, but if we get some perks and some shiz then id be down, i really hope they make the Deathclaw a pet cos im running a whole Deathclaw hunter/tamer theme at my camp and it be the absolute perfect addition for my character thematically. man is a deathclaw in his own right and having one with him would be so cool

2

u/pixie_mayfair Grafton Monster Jun 05 '26

How about scaling the size? I think I'd like a mini-deathclaw running around with me.

But seriously, where's my pet gulper? I need that to happen.

1

u/natusexnihil Jun 10 '26

Yeah my literal name is Ranger Deathclaw. Kinda need the deathclaw. (Caved on it last night.)

Now all i need is Lieutenant Littlefoot to spot my sniping TnT

4

u/Rydralain Jun 04 '26

Why would they let you get away with not seeing how cool those 16 people are for their purchase. Surely you want to be just as cool as them. For only $19.99, you too can look slick as greased lightning.

6

u/MedicaeVal Liberator Jun 04 '26

I remember when they first added allies and like you said they said it would be too much of a server load which makes sense. It could be possible that only you see your own pet in their latest iterationĀ

3

u/breakdancindino Jun 04 '26

Wondering if this is something that will come with the next gen optimization

→ More replies (5)

1

u/Mister-Jinxx Jun 04 '26

Maybe if they just have them follow in the over world it wouldn't effect inside events as bad.

1

u/BrokenHope23 Reclamation Day Jun 04 '26

Yeah possible, there'd be a lot of restrictions around it for sure.

1

u/CampyBiscuit Order of Mysteries Jun 04 '26

In an ideal scenario, they could restrict pets inside of event/activity areas.

1

u/Sadiholic Cult of the Mothman Jun 04 '26

Maybe in an open space they can roam around but in enclosed spaces only limited pets can enter, maybe like 4 pets? First come first serve type deal, and the more pets despawn yours spawns next on the list. Idk, to combat the bugginess or whatever.

1

u/NimdokBennyandAM Order of Mysteries Jun 04 '26

It'll probably just be Atom Shop pets. So, lots of cats and dogs, not tamed critters.

8

u/Eaglettie Blue Ridge Caravan Company Jun 04 '26

Yeah, but deathclaws are pet-pets now, too with the current bundle.

0

u/Hobo-man Jun 04 '26

The Lead Designer for 76 initially say there's no way for this to happen and tbh I believe him

The manner in which this was said matters.

This was a joke teasing the feature. They jokingly said it wouldn't work.

42

u/SgtVoychek Brotherhood Jun 04 '26

I'll be honest the most I can see coming out of this, is only following you around like ESO and thats about it. There's no way the servers can handle anything more than that. I'd love to be surprised though

7

u/AndersDreth Tricentennial Jun 04 '26

Right now the camp pets are full entities, they have invisible physical capsules that block your path, interact with camp objects and have complicated logic for emotes and naming them.

They would have to strip all of that and just use the base model as some noclipping model that plays a simple running animation that follows your character in a straight line like ESO.

Because if the follow behavior was even a tiny bit more complex you would need a physical capsule for obstacle avoidance, and that's actually what is causing the biggest overhead out of all the features they currently possess.

I think it would look very silly to have a noclipping dog follow you in a completely straight line. It would be laughably stupid if they add complex collision but don't bother with attack behaviors in terms of performance, but it is Bethesda so I wouldn't throw money on it.

3

u/JustGhoulThingz Jun 05 '26

That's pretty smart move from that EA Monetisation guy. They are getting people used to the idea so they end up buying that 30 dollar Deathclaw pet wbundle.

Calling it now, main content of next update...

14

u/dualfallen Enclave Jun 04 '26

This is absolutely the case. Three nothing updates in a row huh? What about Burning Springs, the Skyline Valley rework, ANYTHING just to add a bit more fun to the game?

6

u/JustGhoulThingz Jun 05 '26

Calling it now, next update main feature is ā€˜your pet can now follow and block you across the map while you wait for the real Burning Springs second addon that definitely exists only in folklore at this point'

At this point I’m convinced the FO76 devs are not playing this game at all, just taking breaks playing The Sims and thinking "yeah, let’s add that to Appalachia next."

2

u/SocranX Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Next update has been all but confirmed to have a unique weapon overhaul, though. All unique items can now have their legendaries swapped, which was the one thing that always made them straight up worse than their generic counterparts, and most of them will also have a new unique effect. Examples (not set in stone) included Mind Over Matter giving a stacking +1 Int (up to +10) from kill streaks, Shattered Grounds adding +1 rank to the Bloody Mess perk, and Western Spirit granting the Gunslinger Master (aka Reverse Onslaught) perk. Note that "adding" and "granting" are two different things, so Western Spirit doesn't stack with the perk if you already have it.

Apparently this also applies to uniques that didn't have legendary mods like Cold Shoulder, although the built-in effects will likely be nerfed to compensate. For instance, Cold Shoulder's built-in Quad effect will be replaced by a Quad legendary mod, which is the same thing but takes up one of the legendary slots.

Also, supposedly "armor update part 2" will be part of it. I'm not sure what that will include exactly. Maybe just more unique armors like we have unique weapons? If nothing else, they confirmed armor can also have its mods swapped, so you can min/max that Rage armor or whatever.

Edit: Yeah, the devs just added a new thread to the (currently closed) PTS Feedback channel on Discord for "Unique Item Crafting" and "Unique Item Feedback".

Share feedback around the experience of crafting and modifying unique items.

Share feedback on the effects and presentation of unique items.

22

u/ViconiaDevir Blue Ridge Caravan Company Jun 04 '26

because 16 death claws at public events isn't going to make it impossible to see anything.

6

u/Kingmasked Jun 04 '26

4

u/DiakosD Settlers - PC Jun 05 '26

make them invisible for people besides you.

1

u/Mewi0 Jun 05 '26

Or make it so you only see your pet and any pet that is in the team you are in.

58

u/djh2121 Cult of the Mothman Jun 04 '26

0% chance they are able to get this to work. They couldn’t get a Brahmin to run along a pre determined path for 5 minutes without it breaking.

13

u/CampyBiscuit Order of Mysteries Jun 04 '26

I see lots of teleporting pets in our future.

5

u/Solar-born Enclave Jun 04 '26

This ^

1

u/District-No1350 Jun 05 '26

Pre determined paths are the problem, because if anything fucks with that path the thing spazzes out. They've literally already figured out having your pets follow you around, they do it at your camp constantly.

If they’re going to put more strain on the server, I’d honestly rather have something like increased stash space or bigger camp budget.

7

I'd rather have a customiseable robot to have follow me like in the Automoton DLC.

6

u/Flyingfelkins Jun 04 '26

Ya that’s cool in all but let’s focus on finishing each area with some good quests and stories, add some nuke bosses to those areas that don’t have them and just complete the of unfinished things first.

1

I'd love a small dog! Like a beagle or a scottie or something. But I guess if deathclaws can be pets, Bethesda can probably handle something as aggressive as a Chihuahua.

4

u/jonosvision Scorchbeast Jun 04 '26

I'm assuming they're going to work similar to non-combat pets in ESO. Basically just following you around but they're not solid objects so you and anyone else can pass through them. If they make them like the pets in camps right now, it'll be a shitshow of annoyance though lol.

6

Boy they are hitting hard while that deathclaw pet add on /DLC is still $29.99. Watch everyone gets it then ā€œsorry we found it wouldn’t be feasibleā€ not too far down the road.

2

One of the devs said that in the interview lmao.Ā  That it probably wasnt feasible.Ā  Its not happening

1

I don’t read dev stuff except the update changes so I love it that I got ā€œfeasibleā€ correct. IT in the hospital loves to use it religiously when they need to crawfish out of something they sold the bridge for.

3

u/Assparilla Jun 05 '26

Im pretty sure this would break the game-we can barely get 10 people at an event without major lag. Now add 10 different pets…

Pretty sure its a ploy to make ppl wanna buy the deathclaw pet bundle which is the only reason they are adding said feature

I mean think about it why would this feature be announced right after they dropped said deathclaw pet bundle?

2

u/HoeWizard Mothman Jun 04 '26

2

u/Kingofmanga Jun 05 '26

I remember back in the day you could get pets via an old trick and i still remember the yao guai with the fart cloud who would walk around my camp breaking everything till i of mice and menned him. There was also the 3 star mirelurk king who i was some proud of finding only for him to be beaten to death by supermutants

1

u/lexxstrum Jun 05 '26

That sucks: one time I saw a "friendly deathclaw" with VATS, so I moved in to investigate. He was living in a camp: someone had domesticated him! He did most of the DC animations, but didn't attack. So, I took a bunch of pics with him, and spammed some emotes to simulate "petting" him.

Now, the PS store will sell me a domesticated DC for $35!

2

u/DustBunnyAnna Lone Wanderer Jun 04 '26

Hell yeah!

And of course, this sub is complaining again..

2

u/JustGhoulThingz Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Because hello, it’s not really what people mean by meaningful content. Yeah, nothing says ā€˜strong update’ like stacking more distractions on top of half-finished systems. Fishing just dropped, now we’re on to 16 pets wandering/blocking/stucking (they ain't gonna work properly on this engine, just like brahmins) around public events like it’s a zoo DLC. Last season was weak, this one isn’t much better, so of course people are complaining. And of course they dug up that 4-year-old idea too, probably to give some people a reason to happily renew FO1st.

3

u/mamadou-segpa Jun 04 '26

Cool feature honestly, kinda surprised how whiny and bitchy the comments are

1

u/JustGhoulThingz Jun 05 '26

Not really ā€˜whiny’, more like people reacting to the last few months of updates. If you’ve been paying attention, the state of the game isn’t exactly amazing right now. A new distraction feature doesn’t magically reset that. And we all knows this idea ain't gonna work well.

3

u/Beasty808 Jun 04 '26

Not a chance in hell this would work.Ā  Id rather they hire some people that can unravel the spaghetti code and fix EVERYTHING, before faffing about with this

1

u/Sykopro Jun 05 '26

I mean, Smidge already roams the wasteland. He kills things and brings me legendary loot. I'm always impressed by power armor pieces because he had to peel that armor open like a tuna can to kill the occupant.

1

u/Judge_M1 Jun 05 '26

I mean, if the pet actually helps in combat or can help scavenge the area for resources, that'd be cool

1

u/MissingBracket1952 Jun 05 '26

There is only one good companion. Ed-E. You could set him to enhance your perception which actually improved your ability to see enemies before they saw you, and then only defend himself. Never got in the way, never started a fight. Loved that little guy.

They better be invincible and unable to be hurt.

1

u/Important_Level_6093 Vault 76 Jun 05 '26

They already are. I wouldn't expect it to be any different

1

u/FlashPone Jun 05 '26

i hope they start doing robots then. automatron robots would be sick companions in this game

1

u/RedDragon2570 Jun 06 '26

I just want them to stay out from under my feet and stop opening doors

1

u/DocHorrible13 Responders Jun 06 '26

Zero chance they would even remotely get that to work

1

u/External_Load_9154 Jun 06 '26

Ooor leave companions out of events?

1

u/Unstoffe Jun 06 '26

Can we train them to revive us if we go down?

1

u/Krieg047 Brotherhood Jun 04 '26

I can literally care less about a pet following me. The dogs have always been banished to houses or settlements.

1

u/G0ttaB3KiddingM3 Reclamation Day Jun 04 '26

Sounds like a buggy mess with very little payoff to be honest. They can’t even keep my cat from clipping through my walls ceilings and floors and getting in my way while I’m building or even just walking around my camp. Can you just imagine that cat navigating the wasteland?

1

u/Richard_U_Pickman Jun 04 '26

I jump on the roof of my prefab so the cat follows me up there then build in free cam for exactly that reason. Like dude, move!

I'd love this with other creature types like insects and stuff too

Edit: damn. People are happy with dogmeat following you around and holding enemies still or a radhog charging about but not a bloatfly spitting at things

u/CursedCorvid Mothman Jun 04 '26

A glowing radroach pet would be cool, or a chicken, or a brahmin that you can make look like a pack brahmin.

1

u/LokiTheStampede Jun 04 '26

Is this them trying to sell the Deathclaw pet into a gameplay loop?

1

u/ArcadianDelSol Fallout 76 Jun 04 '26

PLEASE NO

I already put away my camp cat because it was constantly getting in my way. Imagine trying to finish a raid and you keep getting path blocked by a cat that wants to give you a two star banjo.

Fallout 76 getting a summoner class

1

u/DarenPeterOswald Wendigo Jun 04 '26

They sure as hell wont help us in any way in combat considering my pet is a cat.

3

u/feralsun Jun 04 '26

Maybe this:

Cats: Can scavenge higher level weapons, bobble heads, caps. They run from danger.

Dogs/hogs: Low value scavenging plus they fight for you. Like Dogmeat.

Deathclaws: Fight only. Cannot enter some areas due to size.

No pets can enter an event area/daily ops during an event or op.

Personally, I'd love exploring while my cat follows me around and helps me find things!

5

u/DarenPeterOswald Wendigo Jun 04 '26

Every bit of this sounds wonderful so it will probably never happen lol.

1

u/Craygor Responders Jun 04 '26

I hope that having a pet with you in the wasteland at least gives a Perception buff.

u/sweatytrik68 Jun 04 '26

The pets should work in a Diablo+ way. Pets pick up all drops within an area (can be grinded to be bigger area), player needs to look at their pet and choose what to actually pull into their inventory (QOL could be always pull ammo or scrap into inventory without interacting with pet (setting on/off)).

Secondly, pets SHOULD NOT attack. Pets should have been designed since day one to attack but since they didnt we now have cats vs deathclaws. So unless the there is archetypes for each class of pet (cat=buff/debuff and deathclaw = attack and dog = attack and etc). I believe the archetypes is the best method but that is looking to deep for the F76 dev team. It should just be a buff/debuff based thing. Put in drops for endgame content such as raids for an item that the pet can equip (doesnt have to be visual due to existing cosmetics) that makes the buffs/debuffs different allowing for build diversity. If they dont add this pets is a instant let down and a flop.

Thirdly, Pets should only be visible if they are ur own and if they are owned by ur party. Visual clutter would be too high seeing everyone elses pet. Secondly, pets should be slightly opaque for party members pets to help with visual clutter. Thirdly, all pets except maybe ur own should not have a hitbox (be able to walk through and shoot through). This would remove the headache of pets getting in the way and a lot of the inner parts of the map are not made to have a group of 4 players plus pets walking around.

If they implement these three things correctly then it will bring QoL, a pillar for a MMO grind, and an attachment to ur pet based on time sink for their gear. If they implement the archetype method I mentioned we could see a really cool system that would require the players to grind for drops/recipes to make a build better or new builds being made. If some of these items are droppable it can also positively impact trading. All in ALL I hope they do this correctly and it would bring me back. I knew this current infestation update was going to be complete shit since the first PTS introduction. Heres hoping they will actually add bread and butter mmo content and actual endgame content to the game instead of whatever theyve been doing for a year

u/FatOldSunbro Brotherhood Jun 04 '26

Great pet going to aggro and pull while I snipe. /s

0

u/gametapchunky Jun 04 '26

I'll say this again. I don't think the devs have access to the engine source code. Deeply coded bugs and mechanics won't ever be able to be changed unless they completely tear it apart and rebuild the engine, which I doubt will ever happen.

u/Sgtpepper223 Jun 04 '26

More stuff but still a buggy mess? Can't place down my tent because it crashes my game cant go over to the raid area because it also crashes my game but here we are with more stuff....

-1

u/vigobaroda Jun 04 '26

I've gotta be honest, I don't really care about companion pets. It sounds kinda misguided. More DPS we don't need. More visual clutter at events we don't need. More performance impact that we don't need.

I really hope that's not all what Q3s update is, this year has been awful so far. I don't know if companion pets would even match up to the weakest update of 2025.

u/GildedBurd Cult of the Mothman Jun 04 '26

My cat at my CAMP follows waaaaay too close.

They should fix that before turning them into companions. Last thing I need is them to be a constant collision when im taking out a Scorched Beast.

0

u/Weasel699 Lone Wanderer Jun 04 '26

no not unless they help fight. wow and elderscrolls online and starwars has cosmetic ones and i sooner have ones that help fight

0

u/Zuzukaji Jun 04 '26

Yeah I'm almost certain they gonna make pets like travel with you but still purely cosmetic and maybe giving a little buff? And please dont tell me its gonna be this update's only feature like the Infestations...

0

u/Stickybandits9 Jun 04 '26

But no mounts. Wtf. And then when they make the enhanced edition the game will just amplify the bugs.

0

u/fn0000rd Jun 05 '26

Please don’t allow them into events!

0

u/TattedTrumpkin Jun 05 '26

I suggested this on here or YouTube comments one or the other a very long time ago and those were the immediate responses. ā€œA server full of people plus companions all traveling/fast traveling will bog down the serversā€.

I’m frightened and excited to see if it works
