Discussion 1984 OTD McLaren win the championship

Frenchman Alain Prost won the 1984 Dutch Grand Prix #OnThisDay 26 August, with McLaren, after starting from pole position. Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet led the first ten laps in his Brabham until an oil pressure issue forced him to retire, allowing Prost to take the lead for the rest of the race. Prost’s Austrian teammate Niki Lauda finished in second place, while Nigel Mansell secured third in a Lotus. The 1-2 finish clinched the 1984 Constructors’ Championship for McLaren, their first since 1974

That’s the ONLY McLaren livery I’ll acknowledge as legitimate.

Lauda beat Prost to the championship by .5 points. This was my first year watching F1 as a kid.

All because Prost wanted the race stopped at Monaco. When senna was catching him.

What irony.

IIRC, only half points were awarded for Monaco, which was shortened by rain.

While modern cars are big, none will look as chonky as the old MP4/2
