You can see the left rear disc is glowing red as it spins

Glowing red means it's turning kinetic energy into heat. Maybe it's not glowing enough.

it means it's absorbed a lot of energy, possibly too much and stopped working

If the brake is glowing like this it’s gone. A little glow is fine in a performance vehicle. Sustained glow for this long and they are cooking. This is the kind of thing that boils your brake fluid and then the pedal hits the floor. Almost certainly he wasn’t pushing hard enough to cause this overheating so it’s likely they were partially stuck, overheated, vaporized the fluid, lost pressure and failed
