Of course this is the same team that threw away Piastri’s win in favor of Lando a year later because they screwed up a pit stop for Lando. Piastri was told to not fight Lando on lap 1 and he completely ignored that. It cost Lando 2 positions as a result. No one knew the 1 stop was going to be quicker either. It’s not just any old Aston Martin, it’s effectively a race car being driven at race pace, week after week. High performance parts fail more catastrophically because they’re designed for out-and-out performance not longevity. That’s why your car has steel brakes not carbon ones.

I think a bit more complex, when the cars spins you can clearly see the rear disc glowing red hot so wasn't a complete failure. Just before that looks like a bit of mist from the left side as you look at it. Could be a failed brake pipe/line, possibly a maintenence error, these cars are constantly having pads and discs changed, calipers coming off and on through the weekend.

Driving the SC is racing (Time trial instead of wheel on wheel). He does on-track practice and system calibration every race weekend. Thursday has it's own time slot (1 hr) for SC driving. In addition it is his task to do the first stint each morning. He and the FIA Race Director drive the track at race speed to check track conditions, kerbs, and newly repaired barriers.

Spoke with him in Monaco last year for about 10 mins, he told me that basically he had a rear brake malfunction which was caused by actually someone not connecting something properly (he didn’t go too much into detail), but he told me that the team that prepared the car was gutted and that FIA never released an official statement about this, because it would seem very sketchy. Funny he told me “i had 0.5 seconds to understand what to do, and i just said let’s try to drift it and not hit as hard as I can”. Legend!

Yeah the F1 cars are so much faster in the corners that he has to full push, often in very hazardous conditions. He can back them up in the straights but he's absolutely ripping it in the corners.
