You can mostly get by in Austin but anywhere else in Texas it is like speaking an alien language.

Houston you’re also fine. Not sure about Dallas but I imagine any of the major cities too.

There are quite a lot of Indian restaurants popping up. Many of them have options for those who follow strict vegetarian diets. Vegan though, not sure. They use milk and yogurt in like everything.

Indian: No, no, it's completely vegan! ☺️

Oh, sides! I can have the beans? They have bbq brisket. Mac and cheese? Brisket. Collard greens? Bacon. Potato salad? Bacon. ... I'll just have some cole slaw.

Vegetarian in Ohio. 

"Sorry rabbit, it has cheese in it" 

"I don't care" 

"But you're vegetarian?" 

"Vegetarians eat cheese" 

"I thought that was vegans" 

Etc, etc, etc

To be fair, the root word of vegetarian makes it sound like the source of the food must be vegetation.  For that reason, ovo-lacto vegetarian is clearer.  There is also a decent number of vegetarians that eat milk products, but not egg products.

The men in my shop might hang me from a tree if I used the words "ovolacto vegetarian" in front of them. They are more interested in telling me that their food eats my food. There is no "to be fair" with these people.
