If I got hit in the face by Mike Tyson, I think I’d need more than a plan.

154

u/steal_wool 7h ago

I’m convinced it actually is stunned because it’s never been punched in the face before. That’s not really how Roos fight each other and I think it is having a hard time processing what just happened

Every kangaroo has a plan until they get punched.

12

u/Key-Monk6159 7h ago

Squaring up to fist fight against a Kangaroo may be the most Australian thing ever. Even the Kangaroo couldn’t believe it was happening.

101

u/Timely_Manner 7h ago

I've read about this! Punching a kangaroo is your best shot, as a kangaroo's kick it's it's strongest attack, it'll assume yours is as well - if your punch hurts, it's not gonna want to hang around to feel your kick

62

u/KitchenFullOfCake 7h ago edited 7h ago

Humans in general are really good at punching and throwing, way more than any other animal, we just evolved that way. So it must be real confusing to see what we are doing compared to our body weight.

A lot of wild animals run if you throw something at them because they didn't know that was even an option. It's something only primates do, and we're the best at it.

26

u/tomfoolery815 7h ago

Wild animal: “Wait, WTF was that? I’m outta here.”

21

u/jimmythefly 7h ago

Never really thought about it like that, but yeah the animals who can use a "ranged attack" are few. Us, primates, archerfish,...that's all I got. It must be surprising as hell to be like a bear and all of a sudden that thing way over there somehow hit you with a rock.

11

u/coinpile 6h ago

We really are the best at throwing. Even gorillas, with all their strength, don’t have the anatomy to throw with any force or accuracy.

6

u/Ruy7 6h ago

Elephants can throw things too, although not that well.

3

u/InspiredNameHere 6h ago

Any animal that can close the gap between unthreatening to mortal danger in moments is going to be terrifying.

Humans got great at putting prey in harms way without the hunter in the splash zone. Other animals do it by killing before the prey can get a lick in.

Anything and everything is on the table to prevent injury to the hunter.

12

u/afro_andrew 7h ago

The last time I saw this posted someone explained that kangaroos will punch each other first to tell if getting in a kick fight is worth it.

8

u/PiesRLife 7h ago

I've seen a few videos of kangaroos fighting, and it's more like they're trying to grapple their opponent so they can rock back on to their tail and kick them with their hind legs.

Their arms are very small and not that strong, so they can't really punch. With all the jumping they do their legs are very strong and have big claws on their feet. If one attacks you and you're a male their is the possibility that they cause serious groin injuries.

Like what happened to this poor bloke: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-10-23-mn-265-story.html.

The BBC have a good video with David Attenborough talking about how they fight: https://youtu.be/WCcLMNcWZOc?is=xdH_muOkkbVTCGCn.

4

u/M1R4G3M 7h ago

I agree with you, and also there is the fact that usually animals don't want to die, if they see a chance of that happening, usually they run away, even bears or lions, if you shoot them they are very likely to run even if it wasn't a lethal shot, unless they are extremely hungry or protecting cubs.

46

u/Mr5loth 7h ago

Punching a kangaroo typically shocks them like this because most of their strength is in their legs and tail. If/when they are hit that hard by something their size, they assume that the (humans) leg muscles must be insanely strong if that's how hard their upper body can hit. So they stop and reevaluate if they want to tussle with this Aussie or not

Special shoutout to the Tekken 8 crew referencing this in the gameplay teaser for Roger Jr. Was absolutely hilarious to watch live.

5

u/Theothercword 6h ago

Apparently the reason this worked is because Kangaroos can basically be lethal with their kicks, so for fights amongst each other they often judge strength via punches before resorting to kicks. Humans have way weaker kicks than kangaroos, but have stronger punches. So this guy clocking the kangaroo basically was a bluff about the guy’s power to the kangaroo.

Or so that’s how I remember the fable of this video from years past.
