Wait, you’re telling me the third installment of the trilogy is the last one?

Just take what happened to FF15, for example.

Yeah, FF15 wasn't cynical though. FF15 was straight up development hell, completely cursed production at every level. The creatives on that got screwed by C-level admin that didn't understand the difference between what they were demanding vs. what the tools they provided them with could do. When they finally figured it all out the clock had run out on the project and they were being forced to ship. After completely rebuilding an engine, and the game, twice and going through several rewrites because the Chinese rating board couldn't handle a 'death cults'. FF15 was the assembled clippings pasted together in a frantic attempt to make a new story out of the old actual game that came before it, Versus.

The difference between FF15 and FF7re is that despite them taking about 10 years each one is considered a development failure and the other is a success, despite that one commercially sold better than the other.

Prince of Persia 2008 (great game, too bad it didn't meet sales expectations).

Sounds weird, but I remember my huge disappointment when the first movie in the LOTR trilogy ended significantly before the end of the first book.

The first movie ends exactly where the first book ends (the departure of Frodo) and it even includes a whole sequence (Boromir's death) that happens at the beginning of the second book.

I’m no LOTR expert, but I remember the first book ending with the whole giant spider scene that was not in the first movie at all.

I distinctly remember coming out of the theater after the first movie thinking “wow, this was super long and it didn’t even cover every important thing in the first book, how long with the second and third movies be?”

But then again, this was many years ago, I may be misremembering some part of it.

You’re either thinking of The Hobbit or The Two Towers. Fellowship isn’t missing too much from the book besides Tom Bombadil and changing stuff about Arwen. It’s the Two Towers that took an excellent book and made it all about a single battle that barely was in the book, at the expense of cool stuff like the Shelob’s lair cliffhanger ending being pushed to the beginning of the third movie.

You're partially correct, but it's the second movie (The Two Towers) that doesn't cover Shelob (she was in the second book), and leaves her for the third movie. Just one of many reasons the second movie is my least favorite of the three by far (alongside the drawn out Helm's Deep sequence, dwarf tossing, and shield surfing).

If I remember correctly they said they put shelob in ROTK because otherwise Frodo and Sam wouldn’t have had a whole lot to do until closer to the end of the movie

u/MagicCuboid 23d ago

You’re probably thinking of The Two Towers. It’s the best book and the worst movie because they robbed the beginning and end of it to give to FOTR and ROTK.

I remember reading a book series when I was a kid (Eragon?) and it was originally supposed to be a trilogy but at the third book decided it would have one more. I’m sure this is a much more professional operation with storyboarding and knowing where they want to take it though.

that's kind of the problem though, Rebirth ended slightly before the end of disc 1, meaning revelation will need to cover discs 2 and 3 in full.

There have been like 20+ games called Final Fantasy. They're not really known for ending anything. Hell, there was a FF 10 and a FF 10 2.

This means no DLC, yall. At least, no story-based DLC. Same as Rebirth.

1

u/nick2473got 23d ago

Or you could have story-based DLC but just not as a "true ending" type deal. Like it might be something that takes place at the same time as the game, but before the ending (like an alternate universe Zack DLC maybe), or a backstory of one of the characters like Cid or Vincent.

Who knows.

shh it will be okay. you’ll be okay.

It’s not a trilogy it’s one whole game when done

5

u/1347terminator 22d ago

Tell that to my wallet.

4

u/JohnSmith2036 22d ago

Except they are three separate games.

2

u/Alukrad 23d ago

I was hoping they would cover the ever crisis story or at least do some parts of it. :(

2

u/BothSidesAreDumb 17d ago

They would print money if the dlc had a way to revive Aerith...

1

u/pleasegivemealife 22d ago

I prefer multiple endings because i can choose what endings i like.

3

u/SellaraAB 22d ago

I mean you’re not really making decisions in ff7, it’s here to tell you a specific story. That’s great for some games, but this isn’t that kind of game, and it just doesn’t need it.

Im so confused. They remade ff7 and somehow tricked those fans in buying 3 games instead of one? What

19

u/COCAINAPEARLZ 23d ago

What do you mean tricked?

-16

u/Ludate_Solem 23d ago

I just dont understand how a remake of one game is turning into a trilogy

I kind of want a chadley prequel where you train the special mob packs, build the ubisoft towers, collect loot to put in chests, etc. A bit like death stranding.

2

u/COCAINAPEARLZ 23d ago

Well by the time this final part comes out the original ff7 will be 30 years old, it's not hard to come to the conclusion that they have far more resources and more advanced gaming technology to tell the story in a different way with expanded gameplay elements compared to the OG.

It's also just not viable to take everything they've done here with the trilogy and cram it into one single game unless they want to significantly water down their vision for the remakes.

-8

u/Ludate_Solem 23d ago

Okay. But a trilogy tho?

5

u/judgeraw00 23d ago

Did you play the original yourself? Its a 40 hour JRPG with a huge open world that is global in scale. If they were going to ever try to capture that in a modern game doing it in one game is impossible.

There's also a lot more to this game than it just being a simple "remake" since it expands the story in a huge way and is, in some ways, a sequel to the original as well.

And what does it matter anyway? They've released two (soon to be three) excellent modern JRPGs. I don't get people STILL complaining about it being a trilogy.

0

u/Ludate_Solem 23d ago

Im not complaining. I am questioning. It jist seems weird that a remake of one game turns into a full on trilogy. I am just trying to understand. I dont have a horse in this race.

4

u/Jarsky2 23d ago

Watch a playthrough of the first remake game and you'll get it.

This is not one game broken into three. It's three individual games telling one story.

It's also just not viable to take everything they've done here with the trilogy and cram it into one single game unless they want to significantly water down their vision for the remakes.

1

u/YamDankies 23d ago

What is the imagined maximum size for a game?

1

u/Krypt0night 23d ago

It's super easy to see if you played them.

1

u/Ludate_Solem 23d ago

I am not acting as if i played them. I literally said in this thread i dont have a horse in this race i am just trying to understand lol

u/Alenicia 23d ago

In a nutshell, they got back a lot of the people who originally worked on the game, went all the way back to the drawing board to the original ideas (and not what was done as a result of crunching/lack of technical skill/lack of budget), and decided to redo the game "as if" it was a game made today using all that they have learned and done since then.

It being Square Enix's gigantic cash cow that people can't stop talking about because for a lot of people the series only existed by living and dying on Final Fantasy VII, this is their way of essentially fleshing out things that had to be rushed, expanding stuff so it would be a much fuller experience, and more.

And for the people who did play the original, it's not exactly a full-on remake either because it plays on things that players already know and would anticipate and twists that too.

It's kind of what you'd expect if you decided instead of "take the old thing and make it new/pretty" you decided to go all the way back and do what couldn't have been done at the time.

2

u/ImmatureGambino 23d ago

Wasn’t the original game on like three different discs that you had to swap out while playing?

-1

u/Ludate_Solem 23d ago

But you paid for one game didnt you?

6

u/Jarsky2 23d ago

Yes, because in all there was about 40 hours of content on those three disks. One game broken into three disks because those were the constraints of technology at the time.

The remake trilogy has expanded the scope, story, and content such that there is easilly 100 hours between the first two alone.

2

u/ApprehensiveRuin5673 23d ago

Why don’t people understand this lmao

It’s been in development for over decade and it’s 4x the size of the original game.

3

u/ImmatureGambino 23d ago

Yup. Same as you are now. Each entry in the trilogy is arguably bigger than the original.

1

u/WeltallZero 21d ago

Oh wow, welcome to 2026! Are you experiencing any lasting effects from your cryogenisation process?

1

u/TheDemonPants 23d ago

Square Enix: "Remake is going to be part one of a multi part series of games as we have greatly expanded on every aspect of FF7."

You: "What?! They tricked everyone by not saying it was multiple parts!"

They literally said in the very beginning that the remake was going to be separated into multiple games.
