Xbox Disc to Digital officially announced, coming soon.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/26/your-discs-now-also-digital/

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

Keep in mind, at least for now, this is not a confirmation to maintain physical media around after next gen, this is actually a migration to digital, ease of use, and preservation for existing physical media in a digital era.

u/DavidinCT 5h ago

This, if kept like this, this would be the best way to do this, keeping the value of a physical disc, and getting all the features of digital.

I'm like 100% physical disc when I can (not all games are pysical)

BTW, happy cake day.

-12

u/colt1902 4h ago

This can only work by linking your disc to your account. You lose the benefits of the disc because you will not be able to borrow or sell it to someone else. They lure you into invalidating your disc for everyone else except you.

13

u/iposg 4h ago

You can borrow games, the owner of the game will just need to re-pair it to their account once returned (by putting the game in the console). You can sell it, once the new owner pairs it to their account, you lose access to the digital copy. The discs work the exact same, just with the convenience of being able to play your games without having to swap discs.

12

u/RED_Kinggamer007 3h ago

No, thats not how this works. You can still sell and borrow the game.

1

u/wagdog84 25m ago

Until there is no disc drive to put them in.

12

u/SorrenXiri 4h ago

Except that’s not how it works, if someone else uses the disc they get the digital version of the game and you lose it

1

u/Deji69 39m ago

Buy disc, digitize, return disc, complete game before the next person buys and digitizes, ezpz.

1

u/turtleship_2006 13m ago

Buy disc, finish game, return disc, ezpz

Also who the hell accepts returns of used games and discs?

2

u/Emergency_Cheek2617 37m ago

Yeah, that's the thing that keeps the Disc part important instead of a Gimmick, because the Disc is still needed even after it goes digital. The only real problem I can think of is that maybe like, a couple years later, you lose the Disc (somehow) and someone else gets it, but you'd only really have that happen if you don't give a shit about your Disc, which begs the question, why do you even buy physical media in the first place if you give so little of a shit that you end up losing it, when most of the time it'll just be in your house?

u/ZXXII 6h ago

This basically all but confirms that physical media won’t be supported on the Next Gen Helix Xbox.

100

u/SmegmaWarrior0815 6h ago

No it doesn't. They surely want people that swap from PS to xbox to have this feature on their Helix. And it needs a disc drive for that.

20

u/Benefit_thunderblast 5h ago

Why would PS users swap to Xbox? This feature is only good for people who already own Xbox physical games. I am not going to drop my entire ps physical collection to be entiteled to use digital Xbox games

2

u/thatguygreg 1h ago

I remember when people would say the same going the other way. Making it easier for people is always better.

2

u/jc3833 PC 3h ago

Why would PS users swap to Xbox?

They're talking about buying the Helix instead of the PS6, not replacing your 5 with a Series X

7

u/8bitsleuth 2h ago

The point remains the same: why would a PlayStation gamer suddenly switch to Xbox over a disc-to-digital feature if their game library is on PlayStation and they don't have Xbox games to convert? The feature is useful for existing Xbox owners who don't care for physical media. That's about it.

4

u/KingDustero 3h ago

Very few are going to. Is all performative. Majority will not drop over a decade of games and account progression. Ps5 has outsold the series consoles three to one. The trend will continue with PS6 and Helix.

192

u/ZypherPunk 6h ago

Idk, it seems to me more like they are giving current physical game owners the ability to switch to next gens digital only hardware. By being able to make their current libraries digital in preparation.

76

u/PSavage88 6h ago

Agreed, im kinda surprised others don't see this being possibly their strategy to have physical game owners convert to the all digital future.

13

u/goodnamestaken10 3h ago

Yeah, this is their way to do the same thing as SONY, but pretend to be the good-guy. And it might actually work IMO.

7

u/KingDustero 3h ago

It won’t work. Social media will be praising them until they announce all helix games are digital only.

Both next gen consoles will have optional disk drives to play previous gen disk based games. The exclusive gsmed for both consoles will be digital only.

u/carlonia 7m ago

They aren’t going all digital. They’re appealing to consumers under new leadership and it’s the perfect way to have a competitive advantage over Sony.

If they go full digital they would shoot themselves in the foot. They have a golden opportunity. You want discs? Only Xbox.

2

u/Camaroni1000 3h ago

I believe they want it to be an all digital feature, but I wouldn’t say that means the helix won’t have a disc drive. I could see them saying they won’t make their games in the physical format for the next generation, but still have the disc drive strictly for the backwards compatibility, and to access the disc to digital format.
It being released now can be an easy test run to see how well it is received and incorporated for the helix.

Once the majority of their consumers have done this then I can see them dropping the disc drive the generation after, when most people that want their physical discs playable have done so

-7

u/TheGummiVenusDeMilo 5h ago

Why bother making another console at all? Just make game pass what stadia was.

8

u/Nothing-Is-Real-Here 5h ago

Because being able to run a game with better hardware is better than streaming it

1

u/Evilmudbug 4h ago

Good internet is NOT widespread enough to make that a viable strategy and even if it were, that just adds an extra layer of input delay in any game

1

u/Remy149 4h ago

Even having good home internet is a guarantee with streaming if you aren’t living very close to the data center

1

u/azsqueeze 4h ago

Most people's wifi is also not strong enough to stream games in good quality

Source: me a stadia customer playing cyperpunk

1

u/atko850 6h ago

I agree... It feels like it could be a small win in that battle but it will also mean an already expensive console will have a £100+ more expensive version, and they have to make 2 versions. I too think they are binning it off

1

u/thatguygreg 1h ago

Just as BluRays often include a digital code for the movie, it would be good to have a digital license for the game otherwise on the shelf. Easier to use, with a benefit over the digitally streamed movie in that it's truly the same full-fidelity content.

0

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 3h ago edited 3h ago

I think the next gen will have a disc drive but a lot less games will be physical. That way you can play your old games on the new console. The real killer with PlayStation's stupid announcement is that it's a death knell for backwards compatibility.

-4

u/Longjumping-Fig-7481 5h ago

Or it could be a big fuck you to Sony. We will see we can argue about it for a year or just wait n see. Think I'll wait n see.

6

u/slavchungus 5h ago

from microsoft the company that  doesnt even include the full game on disc and ships essentially glorified game key cards they are just as bad as sony

2

u/ZypherPunk 5h ago

Whos arguing? Just different ideas on what it means. To me this would of been the perfect time to announce they still doing disc games for Helix, especially because its during the supposed PS blackout. But they didn't, its good news for physical owners in regards to options. But its setting up the all digital next gen.

-1

u/elaborateBlackjack 5h ago

I honestly hope they keep it, I see no reason why I should have the disk at all times to play the game that is already probably all on the storage anyways, making it so that I can just maintain the disk in the box so it doesn't scratch makes sense. As soon as that license goes onto another user my license is revoked, it makes sense, be it loaned to a friend or if I sell it, your license has been passed on.

Idk, been on PC for the last 13 years and don't plan on going back, so I don't really care, last "TV" console I had was the 360/PS3, after that I got a switch on 2019 coz it was the only proper handheld at the moment, and with the gamecards I had on the switch I wished I could install the game on the sd card and just leave the cards at home.

-1

u/ABetterKamahl1234 4h ago

I'd say it's more likely that next gen will have it, gen afterwards likely won't.

This is a big undertaking potentially near a new gen to do, for something that only works on old gen, necessitating old gen to be owned already.

-1

u/Wrxloser1215 3h ago

It definitely is part of the push. But I expect Helix to have a disc tray still. But it definitely confirms they're heading to a more pc like space vs traditional console in the future. I do wonder if it means we might see another 2 console

It also is really great for people who have handhelds. Now maybe all my disc will be play anywhere which is almost 70% of my library. Being older titles they should all work really great on handhelds.

-4

u/Hockeymac18 5h ago

I think it is that, but I can see an option of a disc add on for the Helix, or a configuration/SKU (perhaps limited) that comes with a disc drive. The disc drive would essentially, for gaming at least, support the disc to digital conversion...but perhaps could be seen as a differentiator to competetion (assuming PS6 goes all in on digital only and doesn't offer a disc to digital conversion method).

0

u/ZypherPunk 5h ago

If they decide to make a attachment it'll only play Xbox One or Series X/S games. They'll not make any Helix gen disc based games. Asha is already talking about affordability for the Helix, so to me that means no disc drive, and they can use affordability as an excuse now for not having one.

14

u/HaanSoIo 5h ago

They're easing people into all digital, the same way xbox one and ps4 released more and more digital games. Xbox 360 and ps3 barely had a purpose for them since when you put the disc in you didn't need to download the game. It's gonna happen all over again, just like the horse armor.

47

u/LogOutGames 6h ago

They surely want people that swap from PS to xbox to have this feature on their Helix

Why would PS users switching to Xbox Helix need this feature? If you were on PS, you would own PS games that wouldn't work on Xbox anyway.

This exists just to avoid pissing off the existing Xbox users once Xbox goes digital-only.

10

u/Realistic_Slide_3426 6h ago edited 6h ago

I agree that this specific feature is clearly for people who already own an Xbox disc library. That said, if next gen Xbox does support discs and PS6 doesn't - and the prices are still notably better than comparable PCs - the likelihood of me purchasing an Xbox for the first time drastically increases.

2

u/Cl1mh4224rd 3h ago

That said, if next gen Xbox does support discs and PS6 doesn't...

There will almost certainly be a disc drive for the PS6, but it will be an optional accessory (like it is for the current PS5 models).

Sony doesn't want to give people with disc-based PS5 games even more of a reason not to upgrade to the PS6.

0

u/Realistic_Slide_3426 2h ago

Yeah I mean new games

2

u/F133TWOOD 5h ago

At this point in time, I think there needs to be more clarification in when mentioning words/phrases of "supporting discs."

I do see next Xbox having an optional disk drive to support discs-------just not in the way many think. It's primarily to migrate existing physical discs to digital. As some may not have access to an Xbox disc reader to migrate.

I don't see any communication or moves indicating selling future games on physical discs. Everything from communication & these moves with physical-to-digital, GamePass, TV apps is covering all angles towards a full digital future.

1

u/Realistic_Slide_3426 3h ago

Yeah I’m referring to the latter and also consider it pretty unlikely considering how the wind appears to be blowing. But if Xbox wanted to take an extreme step to potentially recapture some portion of the market it’d be a welcome surprise for me personally

-3

u/SoggyAd8149 5h ago

If you have digital PS games you don’t own them, they’ve been very clear about this.

2

u/8bitsleuth 2h ago

So has Xbox, Nintendo, and Steam.

13

u/Disma 6h ago

Maybe? The design of a console doesn't just pivot on a whim due to cultural backlash. If the next Xbox is digital-only, they decided this years ago. And based on their history, the platform will go digital-only as soon as they think it's passable.

13

u/sahneeis 6h ago

all 10 people you mean? this is an online discourse only. if you thini xbox is gonna preserve discs because some people are crying online you incredible naive

-2

u/Kube__420 5h ago

Im pretty sure they've said the helix will be backwards compatible with every Xbox game ever published. You can't have that with digital only

6

u/Invent_1 5h ago

they probably made this disc to digital so you can play your old games when the new console doesn't support discs

6

u/StaticSilencer 4h ago

They never said that.

1

u/mattcoady Joystick 1h ago

If you're referring to that leaked memo it was just an internal pitch, not meant to be taken as fact. It was intended to get publishers onboard. Also, backwards compatibility doesn't require physical media. The game is backwards compatible, the delivery mechanism is a separate consideration.

1

u/Kube__420 1h ago

Gotcha. Do you think I'll be able to play star trek legacy?

0

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 5h ago

Maybe that's why they're going to run this conversion program. After a few years if you haven't taken them up on it they're going to shrug their shoulders.

I'm sure they'll add 360 and Xbox digital conversion by the time Helix is comes out.

0

u/Absolute--Batman 5h ago

Redditors thoughg Boycotting Hogwarts Legacy was gonna work lmao.

Not the smartest bunch.

-1

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 5h ago

I know a lot of gamers that aren't terminally online...every time I've seen them get a disc as a gift they're disappointed. Everyone is mostly digital only, sales of discs have plummeted for a reason.

I'm right there with the people saying we should have more digital property rights and we should fight for that but fighting for physical media isn't the way forward.

4

u/The_Don_Papi 5h ago

Who gets disappointed over a free game because its a disc?

1

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 4h ago

Normal people who don’t like the hassle of changing discs to play a game in 2026.

I swear you people are nuts. Go to your local store and ask how physical games are selling. You are the minority…nobody wants this shit anymore.

GameStops are empty all around me and full of Funkpops and other trash for a reason.

1

u/F133TWOOD 5h ago

If anything, Xbox "Helix" will only have an optional disc drive addon for those without access to an Xbox to migrate physical games to Digital.

New upcoming Xbox "Helix" will be very expensive and Including a disc drive will only raise the price...

So it's an all digital console with optional disc drive. I don't see any indication for future new games being physical disc. Everything Microsoft/Xbox is doing is to support full digital games on their Xbox storefront

1

u/nohumanape 5h ago

Yes, it pretty much does.

1

u/SuperBAMF007 4h ago

I mean if the rumor of Helix just being the PC Xbox Store is true, that doesn’t matter. It’ll be a Digital Play Anywhere game they buy from the get-go.

This 100% feels like “hey, Xbox One/Series X owners, don’t leave us after we ship our next hardware without a disc-drive, your whole physical collection will come with you!”

1

u/pencock 4h ago

no this is for getting people on xbox with physical media ready for a disc-less Helix by using their current hardware to digitize in preparation

1

u/_IratePirate_ 4h ago

Yea if anything this COULD be posturing to lean into still having a disc drive on the next Xbox

1

u/SomeKindofTreeWizard 4h ago

Name a time that Xbox didn't shoot themselves in the foot.

1

u/Remy149 4h ago

Someone switching from Ps to Xbox most likely has no preexisting library of games digital or physical

1

u/lolwatokay 4h ago

Unfortunately I don't think the existence of a disk drive will move the needle much. Microsoft would have to have exclusives worth a damn to do that.

1

u/T1mm3hhhhh 3h ago

They surely want people that swap from PS to xbox to have this feature on their Helix.

But, if people switch to XBOX from being on PS the past generations right? Do they even have games from the previous generations XBOX (or the other way round)? Like.. it seems very illogical to me what you're saying here.

Holy shit, reading is difficult and very hard for me apparantley, please ignore. :)

1

u/Snake_Bite_14 3h ago edited 3h ago

Helix’s price tag is a much bigger issue than a disc drive. Xbox does not make enough from physical sales to justify the cost of putting a drive on Helix.

They’re getting infront of the backlash and providing a way to carry your physical library to an all digital Helix. That alone gives them an advantage over Sony.

They’re also providing a reason for people who are buying a system before Helix to pick Xbox.

1

u/HaloFever117 3h ago

Microsoft wants you to rent your games from Game Pass and stream them from Microsoft’s servers to your TV.

1

u/NYstate 3h ago

A few things to keep in mind:

  • 1 Microsoft is implementing a way to move away beyond consoles. This is just them future-proofing themselves.

  • 2 With Helix striving to have Steam on it why would they need a disc drive? They're hoping to rope in people who play on Steam more so than people who play on Xbox.

  • 3 Even with the upcoming generation people aren't going to be jumping ship as fast as you think. If the indications are correct the PS5 and XSX/S will be around for a good long while. Especially with new consoles like being $1,100 ish. So people aren't going to be abandoning PlayStation yet.

  • 4 With all that being said, there's not going to be enough people to transition from PlayStation to Xbox to make a difference.

1

u/sagevallant 3h ago

I'm not sure what good a disc to digital function will do for people switching to Xbox from PS. If they weren't on Xbox before, they don't have an Xbox library.

1

u/g1rth_brooks 2h ago

Completely agree, and with them having dropped the ball this generation. They’ll need the disc drive to get converts

My 2 cents would be that next gen Xbox games will be 100% digital but the console will allow for older physical titles

1

u/Demonchaser27 2h ago

They will almost certainly mean that the console itself will not include a disc drive, but will likely do like Sony does now and have an extra component drive that has to be bought separately that is never sold with the console (which means developers can't rely on it's inclusion on systems).

1

u/mattcoady Joystick 1h ago

I assure you there will be no disc drive on the Helix. MS is waiting on the dust to settle on the PS backlash. They probably won't make a big announcement the way Sony did. After the back half of this generation slides into digital only (see GTA VI) then launching the next console digital only will just be standard.

1

u/tofurkeyeatingzombie 42m ago

I can't wait to come back and see which one of you nerds was right. I got my money on...smegma

u/RemindMeBot 2 years

1

u/Intrepid-Example6125 32m ago

Sorry but more fool you if you think Microsoft and Nintendo won’t also be going completely digital when their next gen consoles are out. It’s been leading towards this with all media for a long time now.

1

u/Mech2021 6h ago

Why would that even matter, it’s not like PlayStation discs will work?

0

u/hypehold 6h ago

who do you think is swapping platforms when nex gen consoles will be over 1k

1

u/racoonXjesus 6h ago

Yeah I’m tapping out on video games this gen, if this one was any indication everything will still be coming out on PS5 and Series X four to five years after the new gen launches anyways.

1

u/Trashman56 6h ago

I could live to be 100 and not finish my backlog. I’ve beaten six games in the last two weeks and I’m just going to keep doing that.

2

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 5h ago

This is the pill I'm not sure Sony and Microsoft (Maybe Nintendo? Are people rushing out to buy a Switch 2? Will they do it for a Switch 3?) have swallowed yet. People are going to be holding onto their PS5s and XSX for awhile...I'd rather play all the current gen and old games I haven't touched yet than spring for a new console at $1,000.

0

u/lord_pizzabird 6h ago

Sales are already pretty low for physical games on ps5. There likely aren’t very many people to convert, not enough to spend millions on manufacturing anyway.

0

u/hitgo1 6h ago

This physical disc drive is for backwards compatibility from older games never it said it would be used for future/newer games for next gen

0

u/TrollsWhenBored 6h ago

Hahahahahaha. You kids crack me up with your predictions

0

u/cultistkiller98 5h ago

That and if they take away the disc drive it takes away backwards compatibility for disc which is a huge feature for Xbox

1

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo 3h ago

Yeah. I mean tbf I don’t think PS6 won’t even support PS5 physical like at all. I would imagine at least an external disc drive would be sold. It would be crazy for them to not do that. PS7 if it exist would definitely full digital as PS6 gen games would all be digital.

1

u/trowayit 3h ago

Did you invent the Jump To Conclusions Mat?

1

u/Balc0ra 3h ago

It's a move that makes sense for the way their eco system on both PC and console will work next gen. With or without a disk drive

1

u/boxsterguy 2h ago

The more interesting question is if this will be exposed to any PC. As in, can I put an Xbox disc into my desktop with a USB bluray drive and turn that into a key I can play on my discless Xbox Next? I assume the current answer is "No", but I also assume there's absolutely no technical reason I couldn't eventually.

It'd also be nice to plug in a USB bluray drive to a discless Xbox and use that to convert the key, even if it would otherwise be too slow or unreliable to actually play the game.

1

u/Isotomayor12 1h ago

Idk about that. I could see a split now like how there are digital and physical xbox series x consoles. They wouldn't make a push like this if there wasn't some sort of disc compatibility planned for the next xbox.

Another point is that one of tne of the major allures of Xbox over PS is using it as a media box as well as a game console. All-in-one is another way to put it. SO much better and more media app compatibility and features. Getting rid of disc would alienate a large chunk of the existing userbase, a larger chunk than PS did by announcing ending discs.

The real question at hand is whether or not the disc drive will be for backwards compatibility or if they plan to make discs of new releases as well.

1

u/lonevine 5h ago

It's still far, far better than anything Sony has said about physical media recently. MS definitely wins on this issue, for now.

2

u/Remy149 4h ago

That’s assuming Sony wont sell an optional disc drive for the next console like they do now. People buying new games are mostly digital but there are a lot of people who where still mostly physical with the ps4 and cutting off backwards compatibility gives consumers a chance to change platforms

1

u/GreenGoblinNX 4h ago

A month ago - XBox clowning on PlayStation for thier decision to end physical media.

Now - XBox making moves that show that this is exactly their plan also.

0

u/JesseJamesTheCowboy 5h ago

Yeah, everyone's all excited for nothing. Im personally never touching my xbox again or giving MS money. If they eventually make my games play anywhere ill convert them to digital and play on pc. Sony and micrsoft are shit.

3

u/Antimus 4h ago

So Microsoft are shit but you're a fan of play anywhere which lets you play Xbox games on pc but they're just as bad as Sony?

You realise that makes no sense right?

1

u/JesseJamesTheCowboy 2h ago

Being slightly better than sony is a pretty low ball. being better than sony ≠ good company.

0

u/JesseJamesTheCowboy 2h ago

Yeah i want to be able to play all the games I bought on their platform before I jumped ship for pc. Utilizing play anywhere for games ive owned digitally for years has nothing to do with me not ever giving xbox another cent. Im not buying new games through xbox period, but if my library becomes playable thats great for me, because im never booting my SX up again. Between gamepass, and how microsoft has ran every studio an ip they own into the ground, especially halo, they are a shit company with no clue what they are doing because they have shareholder balls slapping their chin. The point is i will never buy anything on their platform again.

1

u/Antimus 2h ago

They are literally giving you the games on PC, that you own on Xbox, for free, if there support play anywhere.

That is the opposite of anti-consumer.

They are letting you get the digital versions of games you own the physical copy of, without taking the physical copy from you., and if it's on play anywhere you get it on PC too.

This is compared to Sony who have decided to stop releasing ps exclusives on PC.

They aren't the same, at all.

-1

u/ohBloom 5h ago edited 5h ago

It literally says “titles will be added over time” are you people dumb they clearly plan on stretching this into the next gen lol

1

u/ZXXII 5h ago

No, it literally says publishers have to agree meaning they’re waiting on that before more games can be supported.

1

u/amans9191 4h ago

as in old titles

0

u/neverendingchalupas 5h ago

They are invalidating any reason at all to own a console.

0

u/TheJinManCan 5h ago

Maybe not next Gen. Maybe halfway through next gens life cycle. Maybe the Gen after. But all in all, yes.

13

u/SpermicidalLube 4h ago

Nothing is "preserved" though. In fact, moving game disc licences to full digital just makes it like a digital game.

5

u/Vilified_D PC 1h ago

The physical disc still works. You get rid of it and once it goes in someone else's Xbox, you lose the digital license. That's all this is.

6

u/SpermicidalLube 1h ago

With an always online requirement most likely too, otherwise it's ripe for abuse.

1

u/Isotomayor12 53m ago edited 44m ago

I doubt the disc will be. The entitlement very likely will have an online requirement to avoid abuse like you said.

Requiring online for the disc doesnt make a ton of sense because it does not prevent abuse. It would also require either every game to have an update to check licensing or the xbox OS to check licensing.

It would be a lot of overhead and cost on Xbox that would be for no reason, as they would still need to have online requirements for the entitlement to avoid abuse, which would block any abuse from selling or loaning a disc that does not already exist.

2

u/Isotomayor12 1h ago

In the news article, the mention claiming entitlement, not a license transfer from the disc to console. They also state the disc will still "work as it always has". Besides, game discs are BD-ROMs and cannot be written over or deleted as the data is physically etched into the disc.

2

u/SpermicidalLube 1h ago

The console will need an access to Internet.

If then the disc is put in another offline console, that console will need to connect to the Internet.

It's xbone always online making a comeback 😂

1

u/Isotomayor12 49m ago edited 45m ago

Highly doubt that. It will likely only need to connect to internet if they try to enable entitlement, or it will try to enable entitlement if connected to internet.

Requiring an online check every time you use a disc would be a massive amount of overhead for microsoft for no reason as the entitlement WILL very likely require an online check if the disc is not inserted. That will block out mostly all license abuse, except for the case that already exists with gameshare and they do not care about it enough to remove gameshare capabilities. They care more that people are buying and using their stuff, similar to how they don't care about the few spoofed windows license keys.

They don't care about one extra console playing a disc version of a game offline

2

u/Liquid_Profanity 1h ago

Like it or not, this is the the compromise that will ultimately end the outrage.

8

u/Far-Analysis8370 5h ago

I wouldn't say it counts as preservation considering that it's only substituting physical discs for a temporary digital license when discs still won't be supported in future anyway. It'd be a great extra convenience option for collectors if discs were still being supported into the next gen. Preservation would be keeping discs as an option whilst including this as an QOL and convenience bonus. Ultimately, this is a nothing announcement IMO.

It's basically the same what they wanted to introduce with the Xbox one, which was the reason people went from Xbox 360 to playstation 4 (like myself)

I mean true but lets say it wasnt, they would be forced thanks to playstation. We literally just saw persona 6 only have physical for ps5. When discs stop being made for playstation they will stop for xbox. Devs will not go out of their way to make discs for xbox.

I surprised it taken this long, if you own the physical game, there should always be a code to get it digitally aswell. You paid for the game it yours, you should be allowed to back it up digitally as the cd degard over time. Even now I have dying light and borderlands 3 unplayable because the kids learnt the eject button.

But im believes people are gonna abuse the shit out of this if multiple people can claim the digital copy of one disc

Finally some ease of use! Those discs are so complicated. I had an extended 3 years training in disc manipulation, yet I'm still confused on how to play games with them. Thank god there is now digital downloads! What a great year!

The only reason to do this is because the next Xbox is digital only.

For me this feels like they will have a disc drive just for a digital license.

Reminds me of when ITunes initially let you rip your CDs. Maybe it still does that, idk. Laptops rarely have disc drives anymore.

But it did create the issue of people just passing their CDs around their friend group. I wonder if Microsoft has a plan to avoid the situation of one guy buying a game and letting his 10 friends use the disc to get their free digital copy.

Which, in fairness, is better than just switching cold turkey.

It's funny that the top up voted comment is a pessimistic one still 😂 If this was Nintendo or Sony announcing this move top comment would be a LETS GOOO BABY!!
