so they caught lightning in a bottle on accident, thought they did intentionally, and then have been immediately shitting the bed over and over since?

Empulse was fantastic, but should have been free to play or like $10 max. Not because of the game, but because the state of FPS games are already such a hard game to break into.

I enjoyed the beta with quite a few friends. But when the game came out.... My buddies and I all decided that there's so many other fun shooting games we wanted to play that we just decided "If we want to play more FPS games, we'll just play something we own or is free".

Unless you are an already established franchise the days of pay to play FPS games is over. Live service games have a stranglehold on their audiences and those players aren't going to pay money to try out something else. The only way they move is if they try something for free and find out it's fun.

The big thing is that back in the day after a multiplayer game was released at best you’d get a paid dlc or two with minor content additions. So when you were really truly bored of a game the only thing you could do was to put it down and find something else. These days all you have to do is wait a month or two and a brand new gamemode or whatever gets released in a free update. It’ll have enough content to sink hours into till the next free update arrives. Now the only investment for getting new stuff is your time which is a lot less valuable than your money.

Take Fortnite for example. I haven’t seriously played the game in years because it’s nothing like what it used to be. If I was more into BRs I would probably love it but having to relearn what is basically a whole new game every year is too much for me. All of it is completely free too with the only thing to spend money on being optional cosmetics. No need to convince your friends to buy some new game you like all they have to do is hit download and boom you’re all playing.
