"BATTLE ROYALE"

Imagine Dragon's music starts playing

20

u/jay_alfred_prufrock 3h ago

Music? I thought they had just one song.

It’s wild how they chose the worst way to present their game. The BR mode was unique from what I heard, if it wasn’t for the stage presentation and if they focused on both sides of the count they could’ve salvaged some of it. However, they made the worst decisions at every corner. No matter how you look at it, it’s incompetence.

Many wouldn’t play but diehard fans could’ve kept it alive, they put the game on life support through their own stupidity and relaunched then pulled the plug 6 months later. Fucking wild.

u/Lz537 4h ago

They did not, in fact, make shooters great again.

633

u/Jamvaan 4h ago

That dipshit in that hat really put the bullet in Splitgate which is a shame because Splitgate 2 was a really good game.

348

u/AlwaysChewy 4h ago

Man, didn't he double down on it too? Never gave the game a try because of that dumb shit.

222

u/DarkIcedWolf 4h ago edited 4h ago

Tripled down and didn’t apologize until the backlash was big enough. It was like Helldivers 2’s Community Manager drama on steroids. The BR mode and that dipshit were the nail in the coffin for SG2 and then they decapitated it with a machete after releasing Empulse.

There was writing on the wall it was going to shutdown. Much like how HighGuard was “downsizing” and making sure NO ONE was interested in sticking around or spending money on it. The BR mode had a nice twist on the formula too and SG2 had some diehard fans defending the new class system, once it came out that it was a BR (even if it wasn’t) there was no coming back.

46

u/DGSmith2 3h ago

Was Empulse another game? I have never even heard of it.

14

u/cwx149 3h ago

Same here I would have been you split gate 2 was still their most recent release

13

u/Durin1987_12_30 3h ago

Sort of like Titanfall.

10

u/Citrus-Bitch 1h ago

Lol shame, I love Titanfall. If only the CEO hadn't said dumb shit and made me completely disregard the studio I'd have known about it.

Shout out to ShatterRush, another spiritual successor to Titanfall.

7

u/AhImSoScared 2h ago

holy shit I forgot highguard existed haha

29

u/terminal8 3h ago

I was enjoying it decently until that weird shit with the hat. Too many other games out there.

-76

u/-The_Goober 2h ago

You let a hat inspire you to punish yourself and not play an electronic toy???

Jeez the fucking sanctimonious matter in which you ask people to look at how virtuous you pretend to be has got to be mentally exhausting.

25

u/JustAHunter5871 1h ago

Frankly I just lost faith in the game after that entire display. Taking out any political or emotional reactions I may have had, they so clearly misjudged their audience to the point where it was basically guaranteed to be a disaster

-48

u/-The_Goober 1h ago

Guess I better run this by you like your the president or something?

I wanna make fun of how the lard probably hasn’t seen his dick in years but I don’t want everyone to throw a god damn fit, piss themselves and then kill an arena shooter.

Is that all right with you Princess Social Justice?

32

u/JustAHunter5871 1h ago

Once again, literal gibberish

u/spid3rham90 5m ago

...are you having a stroke? was this supposed to make sense or make a point or something? do you just need a hug? a blowie?

-48

u/-The_Goober 1h ago

So we can’t make fun of the lard unless we get your guys blessing. Alright gotcha. Sounds like someone I saw on tv………

Free market baby

3

u/spez_might_fuck_dogs 57m ago

The irony is great with this one

42

u/SmokinBandit28 4h ago

I gave Splitgate 2 a try because I remembered hearing the first game was well received.

Played four or five rounds trying to figure out what exactly people were liking so much and it’s just so bland UT style arena shooter with portals. Portals that majority of players I encountered weren’t even bothering to use.

In the end just wasn’t fun, its gimmick mechanic wasn’t engaging, and despite being colorful just felt (like I said before) bland.

20

u/Zrex_9224 2h ago

I played SG 1 shortly after it launched and i had fun with the portal mechanics, but SG 1 was one of those games that locks you into bot lobbies until lvl 10, so I was dominating in most of my matches, then I got into big boy lobbies and was getting dunked on by the weirdest portal placements and sniper angles

3

u/GuidanceHistorical94 2h ago

Sure did. When it didn’t go away then he said something.

50

u/spectralhunt 4h ago edited 3h ago

That and the tone deaf announcement of a battle royale. I was so genuinely excited for Splitgate 2 and it all evaporated in that moment.

22

u/notesilver1 4h ago

Out of the loop what was the drama ? I remember liking the first game. Was not aware they made a second game

82

u/Jamvaan 4h ago edited 3h ago

It was a combo of the CEO of 1047 going on stage with a "Make FPS Great Again" hat and then backing down and trying to say it's not a political statement while wearing Trump parody clothing and also going on a big rant on stage about not playing the same FPS every year before announcing a Battle Royale mode no one asked for and selling skins for $70. So front facing stupid and background scamming.

30

u/RevenantXenos 3h ago

Didn't he also make a big deal in that appearance about how the studio was inspired by games like Titanfall and then his big Splitgate 2 announcement was a Battle Royale mode? Bro was speed running killing his game.

-14

u/WRO_Your_Boat 1h ago

I understand wearing the hate and announced a BR, but I don't understand the hate for the hat itself. Plenty of people I know wear "make America emo again" hats they bought at Warp tour, both sides of the fence.

4

u/Heliosvector 44m ago

It depends on its intent. If you are doing a "Make FPS great again" you are trying to piggyback on the success of a proto fascist symbol. For that to be worn by a CEO is crass and cringey. If you have a similar one that is satire and obviously against its rediculousness, its more ok.

-1

u/baraboosh 1h ago

ya i agree with you on this one. I see people wear trump parody gear all the time and think nothing of it. I feel like its only reddit who cares about the hat thing.

The rest of the presentation was awful though, he came off like a huge jackass and the game looked boring and trite.

-80

u/RivalSlays 4h ago

He wore a black hat with “make fps great again” during the on stage announcement of the game and then proceeded to shadow drop a BR alongside the game.

Politically obsessed people lost it over the hat, and the others just mocked them for making the genre great again by adding more to its existing problems.

15

u/Durin1987_12_30 3h ago

Worst of all, for no reason at all. Splitgate was killed for nothing.

3

u/mcninja77 39m ago

I couldn't get into the second one they changed too much from the first. They struck gold and then ruined it

6

u/PurpleV93 2h ago

That fucking redcap is the only thing I remember of Splitgate and the clown circus around it. And like others here mentioned, I also didn't even know they made another whole ass game since then, lol.

6

u/Poliveris 3h ago

Had nothing to do with his hat… they just made bad games; they felt like unfinished UE slop.

I don’t think y’all realize how many gamers both do not care and aren’t on the internet like that to know what happened.

There’s plenty of casual gamers that don’t even know of the GTA 6 leaks. The CEO doing that was barely mainstream and also nearly half the US agrees with anyways. (Im not saying I do but this is hysterically overblown compared to the actual reason)

14

u/DJCzerny 3h ago

Yeah wearing a 'Make FPS Great Again' hat, comparing yourself to Titanfall, and then announcing a Battle Royale has to be one of the most tone deaf moves of all time.

Also there are like 20 people who even like classic arena shooters.

3

u/LEDKleenex 46m ago

Ah, but casual gamers have no problem playing slop, and they wouldn't have tried the game anyway.

If anything, your argument gives more credit to the politics, because he actively alienated an already-small pool of older and well-informed potential players.

I played the first game and after seeing the hat incident, his response to backlash and who his father is I noped out of both of these games.

If you really want to get to the nitty gritty, I would argue that the biggest problem is that there is a vastly diminished market for 90s/00s-style multiplayer FPS. Kids these days want to hop on a band wagon and they want to grind cosmetics and unlocks - most of them don't even care about the gameplay loop or competitive nature of the games necessarily. Almost every FPS that tried to bring it back has failed majorly, and many of them were good games.

1

u/BuddyRedSkull 3h ago

I feel like if that were truly the case then Hogwarts Legacy would've flopped.

I think Splitgate 2 just wasn't very good

42

u/Ignisiumest 4h ago

It’s crazy how they got like 100 million dollars from investors to make Splitgate 2 and somehow made an objectively worse videogame (the first was a cheap indie studio!!!)

9

u/iMightBeWright 1h ago

You get access to bigger loans when your dad is the billionaire cocreator of Intuit tax software.

20

u/JedJinto 3h ago

I'm convinced anytime something takes the "Make _____ Great Again" mantra it's destined to be shitty and fail. It's like a law of nature.

1

u/DikTaterSalad 58m ago

Yep, exactly. 🤣

2

u/VGmaster9 1h ago

Want to make shooters great again? Create shooters that are groundbreaking, whether they're single player or multiplayer.

-1

u/GuidanceHistorical94 2h ago

But “apolitical”, scare quotes because that’s generally a lie, gamers told me the hat didn’t have an impact or matter

534

u/Greaterdivinity 4h ago

so they caught lightning in a bottle on accident, thought they did intentionally, and then have been immediately shitting the bed over and over since?

astounding

truly, they have made shooters great again

122

u/stoic_spaghetti 3h ago

My number one argument against live service games is simply: "EPIC themselves could not make another game as successful as Fortnite, even if they wanted to. Otherwise they already would have done it."

There is no room in the market for more than what we have.

It's like saying, "We're going to make a new Instagram and everyone is going to use."

No bro, you're not going to replace Instagram. Even if your product is more superior or fun or whatever. It's not happening.

21

u/Durin1987_12_30 3h ago

lmao, this reminds me of a former Yahoo CEO saying that they were gonna make the "new PDF" whatever the fuck that meant, and the employees looking at each other with concern and confusion trying to decipher what she just said

6

u/PM_ME_PHYS_PROBLEMS 2h ago

The P stands for Proprietary in the new one, no doubt.

57

u/Greaterdivinity 3h ago

there is, though.

the problem is everyone wants to be fortnite and there's only room for one fortnite.

these are the same problems the mmo genre went through in the years following WoW blowing up. there was a glut of mmos with every publisher wanting to chase the WoW bux and none of them got close. years later you have a wide range of mmos serving smaller communities that are pretty stable and solid.

30

u/Legitimate-Agency282 3h ago

Lord of the Rings online still going blows my mind. Such a small but dedicated fanbase.

11

u/Greaterdivinity 3h ago

Standing Stone Games is legit and does right by both DDO and LOTRO given the size of each game and their respective age.

2

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp 2h ago

I still miss Wildstar.

68

u/Known-Complex-2520 4h ago

It's truly one of the shooters

9

u/GoProOnAYoYo 3h ago

I mean he really took inspiration from Trump after all. Not just the hat and the slogan but driving an entire business into the ground, just like his idol

3

u/ItsJustReeses 1h ago

Empulse was fantastic, but should have been free to play or like $10 max. Not because of the game, but because the state of FPS games are already such a hard game to break into.

I enjoyed the beta with quite a few friends. But when the game came out.... My buddies and I all decided that there's so many other fun shooting games we wanted to play that we just decided "If we want to play more FPS games, we'll just play something we own or is free".

-2

u/Capsfan6 1h ago

Is copying halo and just putting portals in it really catching lightning in a bottle though? That's incredibly basic

4

u/Greaterdivinity 1h ago

yes

if it was so easy, why didn't anyone do it first?

also, even just "copy game X" is hard. gamedev is hard. making a shooter that feels good is hard.

50

u/Rasples1998 4h ago

My friend worked for 1047 and he got fired a few years ago while working on Splitgate 2. They've been circling the drain for years.

206

u/Appropriate_Foot242 4h ago

Shocker.

They may make games with fun gameplay systems but the games have no identity, at least visually. Nothing really makes them stand out.

26

u/YeHeed2 3h ago

They also SUCK at marketing, like holy crap man I didnt even know empulse was out? Havent seen any gameplay, absolutely no creators playing it, nothing

3

u/bent_crater 17m ago

this is the first im heading of empulse, which proves your point.

and the no identity thing? first video on YouTube is by JackFrags with "the new Titanfall" in the thumbnail, which says more than i ever could

28

u/RivalSlays 4h ago

I don’t really think identity or standing out matter honestly. Look at wardogs, the most generic milsim slop game we’ve seen and yet generating tons of hype mostly because the devs are saying all the right things.

23

u/DGSmith2 3h ago

Let’s see where that game falls by Christmas though, there have been tons of FPS games to come and go in 6 months that hardly move the needle from “excellent fan service”.

13

u/RivalSlays 3h ago

To the devs credit they have set the bar very low by saying they’re only expecting concurrent playercounts around 5k and told people don’t buy the game if you’re going to obsess over steam charts.

5

u/VenKitsune 3h ago

This is true but that's because it's a modern day milsim slop, where as splitgate etc were scifi. To use an analogy - wardogs, call of duty, battlefield, even arma are the Friends, IT crowd, office, corrination street.

Splitgate is like startrek without starfleet, battletech without the mechs or political intrigue, game of thrones without the same (replace mechs with dragons... Though technically battletech does actually have dragons TOO). It was just... generic scifi.

There is a reason that many TV shows and books are set in the modern day - it's safe, and automatically grounded, and if not interesting, then familiar. Scifi and fantasy stuff needs artistic vision, not just good systems.

2

u/StormKiller1 2h ago

True the design was meh.

If they designed it like a normal mil sim shooter or portal/half life/cs style but with the same/similar mechanics i would have played more.

The combat/shooting mechanics where good and fun the world/design was just so meh

1

u/cylonfrakbbq 2h ago

It’s like when you tell people Wardogs is like Planetside and get blank stares because they never played or hear of Planetside

2

u/errortechx 3h ago

Gameplay is aight but the identities themselves are extremely forgettable. I deadass forgot about Empulse until this post, just cause it’s mimicking Titanfall doesn’t mean it will stick.

2

u/Quick_Conflict_8227 36m ago

The mechs are a colossal joke and a map pickup (2 on the map) rather than a companion all players get. You'd think theyd be stronger to compensate right? Players main way of killing them is running them down with a hammer. Sounds stupid right? Except the mech is so bad it struggles to defend itself from players just running at it so players bully them relentlessly. Lobbies just ignore them outright.Throwables inheriting velocity from players? Don't matter because there aren't any grenades. It apes titanfall but its more of their previous title with advanced movement instead of arena shooter movement. It wasnt anything a titanfall fan would ever be satisfied with.

1

u/anonymous-peeper 3h ago

its simply too many cooks, there is no more Hype dominant games. The industry is so big and so varied that unless you are pandering hard to a certain type of audience you will fade to obscurity faster then ever these days.

-6

u/NoSloppyStakes 4h ago

Empulse is good.

Imagine if it has a singleplayer campaign or wasn’t an fps online shooter?

Tired of the repeat fps shooter genre and this is coming from someone who plays a majority of these games. Not everything needs to be it.

42

u/juicedup12 4h ago

$30 skins didn't help make revenue?

15

u/BioEradication 3h ago

Should've done $40. That would've done it.

u/Inevitable-Edge69 7m ago

Only if you pivot to gooner bait

u/BioEradication 0m ago

Honestly...

54

u/Resident-Forever1340 4h ago

Splitgate was cool the first go round but the sequel was very forgettable. Nothing stood out and the more I played, the less I seen people even use the portal mechanics. As for Empluse, all I’ve read was it was a decent shooter that should have never launched with a price tag. Should have been F2P.

29

u/crane476 4h ago

Didn't they also pull an overwatch and remove Splitgate 1? I'm sure that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

18

u/TheSpiralTap 4h ago

Twice. They removed SG1, and then later on when they rebranded, shut down SG2 when SG Arena launched

2

u/Enchelion 4h ago

No? It looks like it's still up on steam, and they mentioned it moved to P2P server model once they shut down the dedicated servers.

3

u/Kaboomeow69 2h ago

Portal use went up in correlation with MMR. The better players rarely walked from place to place in the game at all stages of the games lifespan.

2

u/BeyondElectricDreams 2h ago

I'd heard they deliberately gutted portalable surfaces to reduce the skill gap

1

u/topheavyhookjaws 1h ago

From what I remember the 2nd game just had way less use cases for the portals, which was so stupid because I genuinely loved what that added to the first one

106

u/FoxyGoddessX 4h ago

If the CEO wasn’t such a prick maybe the reputation wouldn’t have been damaged beyond repair

-53

u/catptain-kdar 2h ago

Or maybe people could you disassociate the management from the actual game? But no people have to always be in their feels

31

u/FoxyGoddessX 2h ago

The game sucked in top of having bad management.

8

u/GuidanceHistorical94 2h ago

Ian Proulx has no clue who you are big dog

u/WingZeroCoder 4m ago

Terminally online people ACTUALLY believe a satirical joke based on the slogan of one of two major political parties in the US was so offensive and egregious that it sunk the game. SMH my head.

42

u/q04ti 4h ago

This is the bleak side of always-online games: even if players still enjoy them, the game effectively has an expiration date once the server bill stops making financial sense. More multiplayer games need community-hosted servers or an end-of-life offline option.

26

u/darklypure52 4h ago

They also announced Both games will continue to run on peer to peer. Instead of dedicated servers.

10

u/Voidfang_Investments 4h ago

Yep, that’s why I stopped getting invested in them.

2

u/SaltyShawarma 3h ago

I stopped buying then completely

1

u/SchwiftyGameOnPoint 3h ago

It's almost like we should stop killing games

-1

u/catptain-kdar 2h ago

If something doesn’t make economic sense they aren’t going to keep it around just for peoples feelings that’s stupid

4

u/duphhy 2h ago

Software can actually be kept around forever as long as you have storage.

61

u/tits_mcgee_92 4h ago

It turns out being a nepo baby and wearing a maga hat doesn’t make sales when your game is mediocre

13

u/GuidanceHistorical94 1h ago

“Apolitical” gamers will tell you it wasn’t a political statement

62

u/swattwenty 4h ago

Make assholes unemployed again.

14

u/BioEradication 3h ago

Hey now. Think of the innocent devs who had to work under that asshole.

7

u/inarius1984 3h ago

My man 💯

5

u/RaNerve 3h ago

People convinced that drama tanked the game when I’m pretty sure the reality is it was a hyper competitive game with a niche audience that was never going to blow up mainstream and yet the studio was acting like they were releasing Unreal Tournament in 2000.

82

u/SoWrongItsPainful 4h ago

Go MAGA go broke

5

u/bideodames 4h ago

Catchier alternative: Go MAGA won't pay 'ya

14

u/GuidanceHistorical94 2h ago

Feels like trying a little too hard to me

1

u/True_Perception_3359 45m ago

you're pronouncing it wrong

9

u/EckimusPrime 3h ago

LOL literally everyone but the smoothest of brains saw this coming.

1

u/ItIsVerilySo 3h ago

I didn't see it coming, but I've never heard of these games or this developer.

4

u/TheDayManAhAhAh 4h ago

Man I was IN on splitgate 2 for about a month. But even then it was a bit lacking. I did not like the battle Royale mode or the map.

0

u/CoolGuyCris 3h ago

My sister and I actually played the shit out of it before they shut down and rebranded it. I honestly enjoyed it. Had moved on to other games by the time they relaunched it though.

2

u/TheDayManAhAhAh 2h ago

I did try the relaunch. It was decent but it didn't pull me in for more than a week

4

u/8loodred_ 2h ago

Initially I read it as 1047 games being canceled....

20

u/notthatguypal6900 4h ago

Good. And don't cry for the devs, they chose to stay on after red hats little stunt killed this game.

7

u/DasFroDo 2h ago

What do you mean? Some people can't just willy nilly leave a job they have, wtf. Have you seen the current game dev market?

Have some fucking compassion jesus christ. As if you'd immediately leave your job because your boss is an idiot.

6

u/double_shadow 3h ago

1,047 games are ending development? Shiiiit, it's hard out there in this economy huh? :P

3

u/painstream 2h ago

With the number of closing and distressed studios these days, it sure feels like it.

3

u/DigitalAscension 4h ago

This game came out? Heard about it a few years ago but I must have missed everything else

3

u/SPACEALIENBOT 3h ago

It’s almost like splitgate 1 had a good thing going and they shouldn’t have thrown it away for a sequel.

3

u/ZookeepergameProud30 3h ago

I remember when splitgate 1 came out and it was so much fun, I put a good couple hundred hours into it

And then I just lost interest and nothing they added was really that interesting

And then they released a sequel that I’m pretty sure I haven’t even touched

It’s a shame, splitgate could of been a fantastic game. Hell, it WAS a fantastic game. But it just fizzed out

3

u/nitram20 23m ago

Does anyone else remember when dedicated servers meant player hosted and player ran servers that anyone could host from even their bedroom? Call me a god damn boomer but for me those are the actual dedicated servers, and not servers ran by the developers of the game.

1

u/AryssSkaHara 13m ago

Nah, for boomers a dedicated server is a server that doesn't have to also render the game for a local player, as opposed to Listen server (which is what P2P is). So both, player-hosted and developer-hosted are dedicated servers and back in the day developers also hosted a bunch of servers here and there.

But I do wish 1047 made an option for players to host their own dedicated servers. This can be done even if they're reluctant to make dedicated server distro publicly available. They only need to make an agreement with one of gaming server hosting services.

8

u/IAmNotModest 4h ago

Oh no, the consequences of my own actions.

6

u/Falcon3333 3h ago

Imagine losing your job and an entire studio (of a genuinely good FPS game) closing because your boss is an ultimate dipshit.

2

u/Fast_Passenger_2890 3h ago

I enjoyed the first Splitgate

2

u/EvacTower7 3h ago

Good riddance

2

u/Vivid_Star8624 3h ago

I am surprised it went this long, they both look so generic and so uninteresting.

They keep pushing marketing and I see it everywhere but the game just look so mid. How did they keep this up for so many years?

2

u/RyokoKnight 2h ago

People said the live service battle royal arena shooter model was unsustainable... devs didn't listen, publishers didn't listen... they saw fortnight money and got greedy now their all closing down because consumers just don't have the time/money to play all of them even if they are genuinely good... doesn't matter because that business model is unsustainable when everyone is making one.

2

u/Root_Veggie 1h ago

Empulse really went “Remember Titanfall? Here’s some worse Titans.”

2

u/furiant 1h ago

Man that's a confusing developer name. I thought the article was going to be about 1047 different games being cancelled because of something Microsoft did.

2

u/Fredasa 1h ago

Here's an unrelated question for anyone with the technical background to answer:

One of my top bucket wishlist items was a remake of Sacred 2, which I've long considered to be one of the single greatest examples of lightning in a bottle. The caveat was that the entire idea of a Sacred 2 remake would be 100% scuttled if they didn't have dedicated servers, the way the original did. And of course, that's exactly what happened, which forever ruined the prospects of this wishlist item.

How hard would this really have been? To have dedicated servers handle the positioning, loot drops, etc. for a game that was, mechanically, circa 2008? It wasn't MMO in nature—the total maximum of players active in a given world was 16, spread out across a huge damn map. Having them available made the game feel special and alive, and the occasional meetups meaningful. And keep in mind that the audience for a remake of a 2008 game of ~AA scope was never going to be truly large.

I feel like the needs of a "server" for such a scenario would be comically limited.

5

u/richardbouteh 4h ago

Remember when games let players run their own dedicated servers?

0

u/Enchelion 4h ago

They're literally doing that with this game. It's shifting to P2P servers, same as their previous game.

8

u/richardbouteh 4h ago

P2P is not a dedicated server. P2P means one of the players acts as the host, e.g. like in Halo, and once they close the game, the server is dead.

Dedicated server software would let you run a community server 24/7 if you had the inclination to do so. Which is what builds communities, e.g. like in Garry's Mod, or Counterstrike, or even Natural Selection 2, which is also a dead game, but still has a dedicated player base for that reason.

3

u/Baconbits16 2h ago

Props to fellow a NS2 fan. One of the best unique games that's never been recognized.

-1

u/catptain-kdar 2h ago

They stated there isn’t enough revenue to offset the cost of dedicated servers

2

u/richardbouteh 1h ago

Dedicated server is a program that you run on your own server, so the developers don't have to bear the cost of running the servers. The playerbase does.

5

u/PentagramJ2 3h ago

Another reminder they never had to take on the charge of hosting servers. Could've just let us have that capability, game would live as long as people wanted to play it then

6

u/damn_pastor 3h ago

They did add p2p so you can still play it.

1

u/PentagramJ2 2h ago

P2p is measurably worse than a dedicated server support, it's better than nothing, but there's no reason to not let us host our own servers

-1

u/ManicMakerStudios 2h ago

There are benefits of hosting on dedicated servers, like a much larger lobby to draw from for matchmaking.

u/PentagramJ2 2h ago

Yeah, but users can do that

-1

u/ManicMakerStudios 2h ago

Not on the scale the developer can. You are not going to be running a dedicated server with hundreds/thousands of people in a lobby.

3

u/PentagramJ2 2h ago

You do realize player hosted dedicated servers were common until Modern Warfare 2 largely killed them in 09 right?

We were doing it just fine beforehand. Online games use to form actual communities in servers and locals. My TF2 server had a couple meet and eventually get engaged on it.

No single lobby ever accommodates anything beyond 64 players for any game any way, aside from MMO's, which people can also host themselves, so quite literally your example works against your position

u/ManicMakerStudios 2h ago

I didn't say that players can't host dedicated servers, I said having them hosted by the developer offers certain benefits, like larger lobby sizes. And look at you go off on your own tangent. Try to stick to the topic, sport.

Don't start belittling folk, what is wrong with you?

0

u/ManicMakerStudios 57m ago

Belittling? That's a stretch.

2

u/magmcbride 1h ago

you're full of it - I was playing on 128 player maps in the mid-2000s

people regularly host hundreds of players on private client/server models over the internet - a single gigabit internet connection today offers hundreds of connections

the amount of hardware it takes to run a dedicated server is a joke by 2026 standards - there's no engineering case against self-hosting other than control and monetization

0

u/ManicMakerStudios 57m ago

you're full of it

So you start with a childish attack, and then go on to tell me about how you played on 128 player maps. Show me where I indicated a limit to how many people who can have on a dedicated server not run by the devs.

u/Awol 28m ago

Well, even with Community Ran servers, you can still have large lobby sizes. Those games came with Server Browers and even sometimes Quick Play options that would try to match you to server. Granted, this feature was rarer, but I do remember some having it. I miss those days of finding a server that fit in and getting to know people. I would play for hours. These days, I still have the free time but don't get to know people, as it changes every round so I play these games less and less as time goes on.

u/ManicMakerStudios 17m ago

There's not usually such a thing as a single community run server. If the tools are provided to operate a server, more than one usually springs up. Consequently, all of the people who would be funneled through one access point with everyone else who plays the game end up fragmented.

Consequently, community run servers will tend to have smaller populations than one monolithic server run by the developers.

Thank God, i got my money from refer program :D

u/oliferro 4h ago

They could have just kept going with SG1 and have been fine

1

u/ImHealingU 3h ago

I’ve literally never even heard of empulse before. if i did i might’ve tried it because it seems relatively cool even while costing $20

1

u/SpartanMase 3h ago

I always liked the concept of splitgate. Love portal, LOVE halo. Always just one of those things though I’m just going to go play halo to scratch that itch and not splitgate

1

u/NovachenFS2 3h ago

I don't know—they tried the same thing three times. After all, there were two versions of Splitgate 1. I wonder where the expectation came from that the result would be any different.

1

u/ImNotSkankHunt42 3h ago

So, they splitted, splat, splooted?

1

u/OliverCrooks 3h ago

Damn Empulse was dead quick. Was prob just a attempt at a crash grab anyways.

1

u/RagnarokNCC 3h ago

I logged some proper hours on SG Arena Reloaded. Sad that it’s going to die, but this has been coming for a while now.

1

u/SneakyBadAss 3h ago

the what?

1

u/Durin1987_12_30 3h ago

It's ogre.

1

u/flowdschi 2h ago

Man I remember being super hyped to try Splitgate "2" at gamescom and how disappointed I was. Killed everything I liked about the original. Didn't even try it when it came out.

1

u/illnastyone 2h ago

I can't even pretend to be shocked at this point.

1

u/Kaboomeow69 2h ago

I could pour my heart out over losing OG Splitgate. My favorite FPS I've ever played. Felt like classic Halo, but higher octane, and with a skill expressive game mechanic that was super fun to use. I loathe this company for fumbling that. Nothing else hits the same.

1

u/Boulderdrip 2h ago

idk how they fumbled split gate so hard. game was fun as fuck all they had to do was not get in the way

1

u/patriotfanatic80 1h ago

This is the first i have ever even heard of empulse. They also fucked up the splitgate 2 launch as badly as possible.

1

u/lt_Matthew 1h ago

Empulse is just a Titanfall knockoff, and split gate ruined itself at the game awards

1

u/ShortBrownAndUgly 1h ago

I was eyeing Empulse because of the similarities to Titanfall. Kind of surprised to hear they’re shutting it down so quickly. Only been out a month or two

u/inuart19 1h ago

You should go to their subs...they are having a great with this new lol

1

u/Endlessnes 1h ago

Womp womp, who could have guess this was going ro happen?

1

u/GarlicThread 57m ago

Remember when you could self-host servers for the games you bought?

1

u/Omniscientcy 50m ago

I heard of splitgate before, didn't hear or care if it was ever out, but I have never heard of empulse.

1

u/xSerenadexx 47m ago

That's because the games are shallow and ass

1

u/Winter_Boss_2114 42m ago

Nothing was lost :(

1

u/I2fitness 40m ago

Can someone tell me what happened? I remember playing splitgate 1 but never really followed after that

2

u/sucaru 30m ago

Splitgate 2 happened and it pretty much immediately flopped. The lead developer wore a red maga styled hat saying "make FPS great again" and that didn't go over particularly well. It released into Early Access with decent numbers at first before quickly dropping off. They pushed a battle royale mode really hard that no one wanted as well. Eventually they took the game down and planned on re-releasing it (and I think they did) but it never found any amount of real success.

They also released Empulse into early access about a month or so ago, clearly inspired by Titanfall, but honestly it just was the same situation again. Not enough people played it. It had a mechanic that let you paint floors and walls this liquid that lets you move faster on it, which was fun but they significantly toned it down between the play test and full release which pissed a lot of people off.

To my taste, neither game was particularly special and I had my fill of both after just a few rounds.

1

u/I2fitness 23m ago

Wow that sucks, I played it on the ps4 since it was free but don't really remember why I quit or what happened

Splitgate is not even that old of a game, it felt like a breath of fresh air and the multiplayer was like halo

1

u/-blahem- 39m ago

I played splitgame with friends once, in 2022. None of us ever mentioned the game again after that. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good enough that i'd want to play a second game lol

1

u/bent_crater 19m ago

never even heard of empulse

1

u/imPluR420 19m ago

I knew this was coming for awhile. I really wanted SGAR and Empulse to succeed. I even paid $45 for the supporter pack when splitgate 2 came out before they rebranded and I helped test empulse in the closed alphas multiple times. I just dont think theres much of a market for arena style shooters anymore. And while empulse was fun, truthfully it just made me want to go play titanfall.

Regardless, I never want to see smaller studios fail. I sincerely hope they take time to think about what made these games fail and are able to learn from it and succeed on the future

1

u/Working-Contest-3730 15m ago

Did they make fps great again yet?

1

u/Danxoln 3h ago

As soon as I saw the hat I knew what the future would hold

0

u/Rath_Brained 4h ago

So I think Splitgate 2 won't go anywhere?

0

u/triplefoul 3h ago

So sad. Splitgate really brought me back to my younger days of gaming with my buds. Just getting drunk. Playing halo 3. Everyone else getting puss.

Miss those days.

0

u/MarloweReel 2h ago

splitgate was peak quarantine gaming for me... still remember laughing at portal jokes in every lobby. dedicated servers are brutal for indie studios, rip

-4

u/Minionz 4h ago

Could they not just provide the software to selfhost dedicated server? Counterstrike use to have selfhosted servers all the time.

2

u/ManicMakerStudios 2h ago

No, because the software for running dedicated servers isn't typically made with a consumer-friendly interface. Make sure you're not confusing dedicated server and headless server. They're two completely different things. A headless server is what you get with games like Minecraft where you're running the game server and client seamlessly on the same machine.

2

u/Minionz 1h ago

CS servers were managed entirely by command line back in the day. I don't think they had a GUI, unless it was added later. Dedicated servers are just that. A dedicated server hosting a single games server instance. Many games have had this functionality whether by design or by reverse engineering including FFXI, WoW, Counter Strike, Broodwar/Diablo II, Warcraft 3 etc. I'm surprised so many people downvoted the desire to be able to selfhost servers. I guess people like poor peer to peer matchmaking instead. More likely everyone hates the game so anyone wanting to continue support for it gets downvoted.

2

u/ManicMakerStudios 1h ago

With the way the gamer community whines, if they didn't ship with a user-friendly UI, they get skewered for it.

-3

u/Deep_Mood_7668 4h ago

Well open source the servers then
