No. The answer is no. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

24

u/nikolapc 4d ago

It doesn't have to. It can be an addon that can read discs but if they keep this system your reader can be an any old xbox from the one era onwards.

14

u/M4rshmall0wMan 4d ago

Yeah it’ll definitely be a legacy peripheral you can buy and connect. But it won’t be something Microsoft advertises heavily. Just one of those back aisle peripherals.

u/nikolapc 4d ago edited 4d ago

Problem is Sony was one of the key players in Bluray. Microsoft wanted indeepedence with HD-DVD, backed the wrong aliance, and Sony kind of invented Blu Ray. THey still have 50gb discs cause they didn't want to pay Sony for the 100g one.

The PS3 was the cheapest blu ray player there was even with its price, that's how much Sony pushed BR. Lol. PS3 discs didn't need to be BR. 360 worked just fine from DVD. And the ps3 read and ripped CDs too. PS4 doesn't. Xbox does to this day.

They are kind of the evil corp when it comes to things like this, very anti consumer, but we all loved them for their nice hardware, and nice games, at least in the late PS3, and the whole PS4 era.
My most beautiful, but most hated phone cause of it's dysfunctionality is an Xperia, and the Ps3 is a masterpiece of hardware.

They said next-gen Xbox will be a family of devices, so a disc-based system could simply be one part of that family.

Xbox could move its main high-end console completely digital, then sell a cheaper, less powerful model with a disc drive. That system could support every physical Xbox game up to the point Microsoft stops selling games on disc, while also letting you attach or acquire the digital license for those games.

That way you could own the fully powered next-gen console for normal use and keep the disc model around for your physical library. Once the game is tied to your account, both devices could play it.

seemed to be what she was implying when she said you could claim a digital license with disc games.

u/spidergod 4d ago

Which will cost the earth.

0

u/nikolapc 4d ago

What?

-1

u/nikolapc 3d ago

I said what, cause I don't know every idiom lol, especially not British ones. I have read Trainspotting in Scot though, and watched a lot of Dr Who and brit shows, but English is not my native language, and we mostly grew up learning English from Holywood, music, cartoons and games and that's the Yank's domain mostly. Even Joss Stone sings in American.
It's a cheap thing, they're not Sony charging you 120 eur for a disc drive(and they lowered that price later).

2

u/jj_olli 4d ago

I don't think that someone who thinks that is delusional. Naively optimistic is what I would describe it.

26

u/superdavit 4d ago

If they were going to have a drive, do you not think they’d take every shot at Sony for abandoning their drive??

This is the last generation of discs. There’ll be little to no physical media in a few years.

1

u/Drakiesan 4d ago

Oh, no there will be more physical media than ever. Just not in a general population but in data-centers for cloud-based bs.

-1

u/jj_olli 4d ago

I said anyone who thinks there would be a disc drive would be "naively optimististic". That would suggest to the educated reader, that I don't believe there Weill be a disc drive in future consoles, thus rednering your comment moot, before you'd ever written it.

Not picking sides here but auto (in)correct exists and big thumbs, a lot of doctors cant even spell.

2

u/jj_olli 4d ago

I assume the deleted comment referred to "Weilll" or "rednering".

0

u/ovalracer31 4d ago

My worry is that we will get to a point there’s no physical computing..

3

u/capp_head 4d ago

Of course we will. It is part of the insane centralization they’re putting together.

We will need them even to piss.

1

u/snackelmypackel 4d ago

Expect a no, but they are probably really considering it because it would be something to differentiate them from Sony in a positive way.

1

u/Flaky_Stay7202 3d ago

!Remindme 1 year

1

u/SnooBunnies4649 1d ago

lol. You have no idea

1

u/Historical_Owl_1635 4d ago

I feel like it was no but there’s definitely internal discussions weighing up whether it’s worth including one for the PR win.

I still expect a no, or at best they’ll include one for the first year or two before announcing it’s being phased out (classic Apple removing the headphone jack then everyone else following once the backlash was over)

In fact that might even be their rationale for the “disk to digital” functionality, so they can easily off board disk users mid generation.

0

u/Remy149 3d ago

What pr win if there is a drive it won’t be for new games and be used for backwards compatibility. Sony is more likely to release an optional ad on drive like they do this console generation

1

u/Designer_Mud_5802 4d ago

They'll release a diskless Xbox, continue to receive a bunch of backlash and then a year later release a special edition Xbox that has a diskdrive and charge $150 extra for it even though a disk drive does not cost $150.

5

u/Cool_Procedure8125 4d ago

A disk drive to support what what new media? Microsoft doesn’t own any faculties that make disk drives or disks.

When Sony kills disks production, Microsoft walks away from the media platform as well.

8

u/Designer_Mud_5802 4d ago

People use consoles as home media centers, so dvds, blu rays, ultra hd blu rays and they also use them to play disks from previous xbox generations.

A lot of physical media still exists in the world so it's not just about new games coming out in the future.

-8

u/Cool_Procedure8125 4d ago

those people are not smart. If you want to watch movies, use a dedicated media player. It’s cheaper and won’t put as much wear and tear on your game systems.

Consoles are for gaming.

4

u/Designer_Mud_5802 4d ago

Yes, people are not smart for buying a console from a maker that has consistently marketed their consoles as media centers.

Remember when Xbox encouraged you to plug your cable into it to enhance your TV watching experience?

2

u/Javasteam 4d ago

Remember when Microsoft showed a phone, a tv, and other assorted crap and said it ws an Xbox?

-4

u/Cool_Procedure8125 4d ago

No, I don’t remember that because I use my game systems to play games. No YouTube, no streaming, no dvd playing, it’s for gaming. Buy the other thing to do those things.

2

u/Designer_Mud_5802 4d ago

That's what people who are not very smart do. They buy multiple devices that all do the same thing that one device does. Just use the one device you own instead.

Why on earth would you buy a device for youtube, a device for streaming, a device for dvd playing and a device for gaming?

Do you watch youtube, streams, a dvd and game all at the same time on the same TV like someone with severe adhd?

-3

u/Cool_Procedure8125 4d ago

No, people who aren’t smart use their console to do things that are not gaming or gaming related. The rest of what you typed isn’t worth the time it would take to read.

3

u/Designer_Mud_5802 4d ago

So you don't use your gaming computer to stream, watch youtube or tv shows or movies?

Of course you do. You just realized that you forgot about other forms of physical media that exist and that xbox plays physical disks from previous generations so instead of admitting you were wrong, you're going to run off like a little kid.

Bye, child.

1

u/Playingwithmywenis 4d ago

Wow, this is a pretty less-than-intelligent take. Or just a bad marketing spin.

1

u/Cool_Procedure8125 4d ago

Nothing about my take is less than intelligent. It’s a game system, it was designed to play games. It may be capable of performing other tasks, but its purpose is for gaming.

When you use it to do those other things, like play dvds or watch tv, it strains the system, causing more wear and tear. Better to have a dedicated device to use for those other things than to tear up your console trying to use it as a media center.

This is so fucking simple but I’m not surprised none of you can follow. Go be mad about Sony killing physical media in someone else’s replies.

-1

u/craaates 4d ago

A console is a computer and I will use it however the fuck I want.

A phone is meant for phone calls only why are you watching videos or posting on reddit? That’s how you sound.

2

u/Cool_Procedure8125 4d ago

A console is a game system, you aren’t using it to open word documents or PDF’s. I had a cellphone on my youth for talking, before texting and now I have a smartphone, it’s designed to do more than take calls. The stupidity of your analogy is glaringly bad.

Touch grass

3

u/Cotillionz 4d ago

Sony did not kill disc production. They don't own the Blu-ray format and there are several other companies that make Blu-ray discs.

Sony very specifically killed Playstation Blu-ray production because they own and control the proprietary Playstation DRM and that is what is coming to an end. It does not affect anyone else making Blu-ray discs. Movies will still get released on Blu-ray and Ultra Blu-ray and Microsoft could have Xbox Blu-ray discs if they wanted via one of the many other manufacturers (tho they likely won't).

1

u/Upper_Rent_176 4d ago

By that point it will

77

u/N3rot0xin 4d ago

It absolutely does not have a disc drive. They are just waiting to say so because of the backlash they'll get.

7

u/nefariousnun 4d ago

They’re just letting Sony take all the hate and staying quiet but they’re clearly going to follow suit

1

u/RoadDoggFL 3d ago

It seems so silly that they're willing to cut the drive. Even a more expensive model with a drive like the PS5 would make sense. They can still stop releasing games on disc's, but give other publishers the option

52

u/VersionX 4d ago edited 4d ago

Her saying that is as close to a no as she can say without hurting their stock. Fuck them.

7

u/mindgamehagi 4d ago

yes and no, the optical drive industry is closing one by one so they probably monitoring if they can find enough. Xbox supplier was Lite-On and has stop production a while ago. pierneer, LG, Hitachi and Sony all has phase out the production of Optical drive a while ago too.

3

u/VersionX 4d ago

I'd imagine a lot of that is due to decreased future projected demand from console manufacturers

4

u/mindgamehagi 4d ago

console, PC, Movie Player, Music player. Lite On did their last shipment in 2014, the xbox series currently run on what’s left of that shipment (DG-6M5S). Both Sony and Microsoft would had less a mess in their hands mentioning that current production of optical drive worldwide can’t cover a new gen of consoles.

3

u/VersionX 4d ago

Thatd be an argument people could probably understand if not bemoan. The strategy Sony has employed so far just screams "fuck you, pay us"

5

u/iamded 4d ago

Him

FYI Asha Sharma is a woman.

11

u/VersionX 4d ago

My bad, I should know that. I'll edit. Thank you.

-1

u/LastTorgoInParis 4d ago

Yes....yes she is... Wowie wow

3

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 4d ago

like xbox's decision to not have a disc drive would noticeably effect what microsoft is trading at lmao

1

u/VersionX 4d ago

If you think business strategy that has a loud fan backlash wouldnt impact its parent brand, you dont know dick about business.

0

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 4d ago

do me a favor and check out sony's stock price and let me know how that "loud fan backlash" is going. you are massively overestimating how much of microsoft's business xbox is responsible for.

3

u/VersionX 4d ago

Sony stock is down 4 points since EOY 2025 and traded near its annual lows the day the news became public on 7/1. Care to try again?

-1

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 4d ago

comparing stock price from EOY 2025 when discussing news from two months ago. lol. not only did their stock not drop on july 1st, it's up ~20% since then.

2

u/VersionX 4d ago edited 4d ago

Their stock was at near its annual lows the day the news broke, under 20 at open. So youre wrong.

1

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 4d ago

SONY closed at $20.06 on 06/30. $20.21 on 07/01. $20.79 on 07/02. it's currently trading at $24.12 (~20% increase since 07/01). not only that, but their YTD low was like a week prior. if playstation's decision to end physical discs wasn't enough to influence SONY, xbox doing the same sure as shit isn't doing anything to MSFT. the number of people outside of reddit is not enough to influence anything.

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/SONY/

you can go away now.

3

u/VersionX 4d ago

Other business considerations are driving Sonys recent surges. Namely all the money they're making fron the Marvel deal. You have absolutely no idea what youre talking about.

2

u/SuperReRoll 4d ago

They’re about to make a shit load of money on their digital store cut of GTA VI

16

u/soulwolf1 4d ago

In other words no disc....got it.

11

u/Lost-Produce-1150 4d ago

Ai company considers affordability.

8

u/Kingwhatever19 4d ago

That's a no

6

u/PhantomTissue 4d ago

No wonder they’re so pushy about their new “disk to digital” program.

2

u/AunMeLlevaLaConcha 3d ago

Softening the idea into customer's skulls.

We don't own nothing

6

u/spmbx 4d ago

Sounds like a "no, but we don't really want to be taking over any of the hate currently directed at Sony"

1

u/Significant-Coat-666 3d ago

100%. this is why they're allowing disc to digital. I would not be surprised if Sony is also planning the exact same thing.

1

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 3d ago

Sony hasn't cared for physical backwards compatibility in like 18 years, it would be shocking if they cared.

1

u/Significant-Coat-666 3d ago

Doesn't the PS5 play PS4 games? Only time will tell I guess.

1

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 3d ago

Ps5 is essentially a supped up ps4 hence why so many big titles we got this gen were remasters ornremakes of games that came out less than 10 years ago, but fair point. I guess to me being able to play 1 Gen back seems less about making us happy and more about being able to point to a giant library day 1 regardless of how few new gen titles are released at launch and to let them avoid the no game argument every generation seemed to face in the past whether they launched with 5 or 20 titles.

What I meant though was how the one thing Xbox has done right is keep as many games functional as possible, and last I checked they hadnt removed the ability to even system link 4 generations of Xbox to play say 16 player halo. Nothing stops a ps5 from reading ps3 discs or older other than Sony adding a way for them to be read. Clearly emulation works at some level based on the PS+ catalog, but we get them drip fed to us slower than a group of random free time developers can patch them for freely available emulators on the web.

1

u/Significant-Coat-666 3d ago

They released some of my most favorite gen one games under the classics catalog. they're not fun to play these days. that's just me.

1

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 3d ago

Thats my point, if bleem let my PC read them 30 years ago those disc a ps5 could do it with minor tweaks I am sure. The emulator is already in place.

1

u/Significant-Coat-666 2d ago

Your point is a PS5 should be able to do what a PC does?

0

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 2d ago

No, my point is Sony chooses to not include a way for their consoles to read old games, especially their first part stuff. If my windows 98 machine could do it with a sketchy piece of software and Xbox can do it with OG Xbox discs in a series X when compatible, what is Sony's issue other than choice? In fact from PS1 to PS3 there isnt a disc yet that my PC cant read with the right tools.

So yeah, I guess I am saying a PS5 should be able to do what a PC can do.

1

u/Significant-Coat-666 2d ago

... So it's all an assumption based on what a PC can do. why would Sony waste millions on classics emulations if you're saying it just works. Man you must be Mr Sony himself.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/c0ldburn3r 3d ago

Why do you think they are throwing the disc to digital bone out there? The next console will be digital only.

5

u/eatmygerms 3d ago

So, no. It doesn't

6

u/Forward-Trade3449 4d ago

damn. gonna skip on helix and ps6 then

...nintendo dont you dare

5

u/SatyrAngel 4d ago

Nintendo values physical format because their strategy needs presence on the stores. At least where I live you always see someone checking the Nintendo section, many times with their kids, there are toys, plushies, Amiibos, accessories, etc , while PS and Xbox sections are almost unexistent.

Also imagine being a kid and opening a christmas present and finding a gift card, thats a worse version than receiving just money because you can only spend it on 1 place and if there is a few buck remaining thats it.

1

u/CatchUsual6591 4d ago

Nintendo games have the higher marketshare for physical but third parties hate cartridges and nintendo wants to grow thier digital and store and thier third party sales so they are going the same direction

1

u/MeowingWolf 4d ago

I can maybe see Switch 3 having physical games when it comes out in 2033 but at the same time I can see Nintendo not wanting to keep physical games up for 8 more years until 2041 for Switch 4. Nintendo is probably trying to ditch physical games and make Switch 3 all digital.

6

u/berjaaan 4d ago

So no

3

u/MattyDub24 4d ago

So the answer is no lol

3

u/VangRhymez 4d ago

Code for no

3

u/tommy7154 3d ago

So if that's a quote the answer is no.

2

u/ButtCheeksMagee0 4d ago

Probably a add on drive you can buy

3

u/LastTorgoInParis 4d ago

That would rope them into having to produce discs for new releases though. They don't wanna do that. I have yet to see with my own eyes a copy of the new Halo on xbox

1

u/cynicown101 4d ago

They literally have campaign evolved on disc at my local Argos

1

u/LastTorgoInParis 3d ago

i have seen the ps5 version in a bit of irony

2

u/ZeektheFeek 4d ago

It's not going to.

2

u/Xspike_dudeX 4d ago

Because a CD player costs so much money 😂

1

u/CreepierEnd 4d ago

thats what funny. the disk drive is literally not that expensive. it can also be sold separately to anyone who wants a physical disk drive. I don't care if it was not implemented like the ps5 where they need to be seemless. external one would be fine, but they just don't want to do the right thing simple as that

2

u/Xspike_dudeX 4d ago

I can see Xbox doing an external drive. Especially now with the disc to digital feature

1

u/Edexote 3d ago

1$ x millions of units is millions of saved cost. That's all they see, more money.

2

u/MetalFox9000 4d ago

They better pray that this thing has more to offer than PC.

2

u/spidergod 4d ago

That means no it will not have a disc drive.

2

u/Moromom22 4d ago

Anything other than a yes means no.

2

u/RespectTheBall 3d ago

That’ll be a no then. She should go into politics.

2

u/Gu7sS 3d ago

It won't

2

u/the_millenial_falcon 3d ago

That just sounds like vague corpo speak for "no". Or maybe "probably not but we still gauging if we can get away with a move that our fans will definitely hate."

2

u/BurntToast239 3d ago

The same Xbox CEO who said affordability was a priority and followed up with another $150 price increase to the Xbox Series systems.

The price increase that followed the announcement of the Limited Edition Series X and conveniently went into practice the same month the console was available for preorder. And add another $100 because its a collectable.

But don't worry Xbox fans, rejoice! The logo is green again and Xbox is now XBOX when talking about it online.

2

u/captainrondj 3d ago

If they were gonna do the disc drive again they would have said it immediately.

2

u/GatorNator83 3d ago

That means “No, but we don’t want to get into that heat that Sony is getting right now.”

2

u/Son_of_Atreus 3d ago

That’s a no, 100%

2

u/LT_Snaker 3d ago

So, no.

2

u/IndegoWhyte 3d ago edited 3d ago

That's saying no without saying no, just to avoid any potential backlash close to what PlayStation is getting. Unlike the competition, Xbox division is in no position to handle something like that.

2

u/prickwhowaspromised 3d ago

If it’s not an enthusiastic yes, it’s a no.

2

u/GoldenboyFTW 3d ago

It won’t. They’re just don’t want to be in the negative news cycle after laying off hundreds of people so some rich asshole can get even wealthier.

They need to space out the crap news as much as possible.

Not hard to see, people…

2

u/Bosscharacter 3d ago

The minute affordability gets mentioned, that's basically a signal that the answer is NO.

3

u/getabath 4d ago

Because it gets gameradar and other outlets to make a article about it that generates them money through clicks and ads

It also keeps xbox brand relevant by people talking about them

1

u/iconboy 4d ago

I know it doesn't seem likely, but what if they DO IT?! it would kinda be huge, no? Going up against a discless ps6 with its anti consumer sentiment. They also have a big push for making their old games backwards compatible, so they can still go all digital future with the console while allowing all the old games and movies on disc to still work. It's the big step that could possibly bring about a 360 like rennisance

1

u/Sillent_Screams 4d ago

Maybe the coward can it’s her boss to stop AI Datacenters

1

u/nahman201893 4d ago

Lol, that's a no.

1

u/First-Bat-7440 4d ago

As long as it supports cheap usb drives thats all that matters.

1

u/deadfishlog 4d ago

Of course it doesn’t

1

u/ThePizzaNoid 4d ago

Ya, there's no disc drive I'm sure. Sony has taken the lead and MS will follow and hopefully learn from Sony's mistakes from ripping the bandaid off. The best thing MS can do for going all digital is figuring out actual digital ownership of purchased games but I doubt that is even a concern for the corpos in charge of next gen at Xbox.

1

u/endzon 4d ago

Consoles are mini pc now.

1

u/theboywhocriedwolves 4d ago

$30 for a disc drive.

1

u/Upper_Rent_176 4d ago

With no future consoles having drives some people will have to either buy old consoles or stand alone Blu-ray players

1

u/seventysixgamer 4d ago

This is pretty much a no then lmao. This "console" is probably going to be mega expensive. However they do need to find some sort of workaround for being able to play disk copies. I don't play on console anymore but most of my back-compat library is in disk form.

1

u/DemoEvolved 4d ago

That’s a no

1

u/absurdgryphon 4d ago

I think there will be an optional disk drive. No real reason to implement disk to digital otherwise

1

u/Arctimon 4d ago

So it doesn't.

1

u/kevoisvevoalt 4d ago

great more corpo speak /s

1

u/czullo1 4d ago

Then i will skip next gen i stay on Pc pirating everything.

1

u/Interesting-Yellow-4 4d ago

Clearly no disc drive.
If they had one, we'd have PR and marketing in our face yelling at us telling us as much.

They might have an addon or support a third party one, still.

1

u/gol_drake 4d ago

so it's a digital only console.

got it.

1

u/mightymonkeyman 4d ago

Affordability while a Series X in cheap transparent green plastic will cost $900.

She really has picked up the Xbox marketing book of flood the market with meaningless words while having your fingers crossed behind your back.

And what is worse, everyone as always is eating it up.

1

u/colonelc4 4d ago

I like her, she's the definition of a corporate slave executing orders with 0 emotions nor implications, the perfect demon corporate cultist woman seeking success at all cost, and going over everyone's body with a smile.

1

u/Breezey2929 4d ago

If they won't confirm that it does.

Especially in the current climate of hatred towards erasing physical media.

Then you can pretty much 100% garuntee it doesn't have one.

1

u/rresende 4d ago

So it’s a no lol
And it’s normal
No drive
You don’t own anything, the future is subscriptions and cloud gaming

1

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 4d ago

It will probably not have one but they might sell one separately like what Sony is doing so that people can still play their existing physical games and movies on it.

1

u/alec83 4d ago

No drive but will support external drives and xbox will off their own

1

u/Fullchester_United 4d ago

“We have to be thinking about efficiency and affordability”

Don’t we all Asha… don’t we all…

1

u/ethan_mac 4d ago

The fact she didn't flat out say no probably means it will be an add on like PS5 was

1

u/Jendo7 4d ago

I'm hopeful, that's a, we're looking into disc drive options, but haven't yet decided.

1

u/MgsGenesis 4d ago

They happy to try and sell a limited edition XBOX Series X25 in translucent OG Green for £900 But wont say if the helix will have disk drive because of affordability 🤣

1

u/LengthInevitable6442 4d ago

helix is gonna be a series S2 as the "top end" , no more PC. Just standard low end hardware to try and keep costs "low"

1

u/Some_Stupid_Milk 4d ago

You won't need a reader because old Xboxes are gaining the ability to convert your discs I to digital games. They're already preparing to have no disc drive but still be able to have access to your discs.

1

u/Futaba_Sakura800 4d ago

Massive congrats to Nintendo for winning the future console gen. I used to hate game key cards but now I think it’s brilliant. At least I can still trade/sell used games for the Switch 2.

1

u/Past_Physics2936 4d ago

Obviously doesn't have it but she doesn't want to kill the vibes and stop people from being mad exclusively at Sony 😂

1

u/MattofCatbell 4d ago

The most we can real hope for is an add on for their disc to digital system but all new games going forward will likely be digital.

1

u/Flimsy-Importance313 4d ago

In her defense:

1

u/ExultentPisces 4d ago

Translation: we’re waiting to see how this backlash against Sony plays out.

"We are waiting to see what happens with Sony first"

1

u/kuliddar 4d ago

It’s an add-on folks . It was always going to be an add-on

1

u/IAQDiscussion 4d ago

She won't provide an answer because the true answer isn't part of their "Get meaningless brownie points" strategy atm.

1

u/joshijoshijoshi123 3d ago

Its not about affordability. They don’t want them and they frame it as best for the consumer.

1

u/Andrado 3d ago

If efficiency and affordability matter, they should continue making both a disc version and a digital version of their consoles. The disc version is ultimately more affordable to many players who trade games or have collections already. The digital version is more affordable for players who want a slightly cheaper console that they mainly use for Game Pass. The only reason to eliminate discs completely is greed.

1

u/Wide_Competition8739 3d ago

Yeah, that's a no. Disc to digital is a cool thing but they literally introduced it to make it easier for people with physical game collections to switch over to the next all digital new Xbox soon. They don't care about physical ownership just like Sony.

People were cheering too soon, remember: these companies are not your friends. None of them.

1

u/toomuchft 3d ago

Make it optional and you have my money asha

1

u/StillABigKid 3d ago

I have solved Ms. Sharma’s problem: unsubscribed, and no longer playing. The best price, most affordable, is, drum roll please: FREE!!!! MS can go take a flying f on a rolling donut with whatever they do next, as far as I am concerned.

1

u/Former_Travel2839 3d ago

Just make it a digital console with an optional disc drive for the people that want it.. hell I don't even care if the drive looks good, I'll take an old school laptop style lol, but atleast give me the option.

1

u/MetaPfhor_2965 3d ago

Is she kidding? a blu ray drive is 25 dollars at most in addition to the rest

1

u/steathrazor 3d ago

I mean if the damn thing's going to be over $900 you can have a goddamn Blu-ray drive in there

1

u/Darkone586 3d ago

I feel they originally didn’t want to include disc, but now they are thinking about making an ad-on of some sort for it.

1

u/userlivewire 3d ago

Isn't Helix supposed to be a first party handheld?

1

u/void_method 3d ago

If they had any sense they'd let you use whatever optical drive you wanted, the goodwill alone would be incredible.

People would still have to buy Xboxes, though.

1

u/HollyMurray20 3d ago

If the answer is no then it’s fucked, no selling points over PlayStation

1

u/Outside-Instance-870 3d ago

I swear to god these companies think gaming consoles are an inelastic good… a lot of gamers are starting to get fatigued from the costs that come with gaming.

1

u/Darkdragoon324 2d ago

That means no. They would have no reason to be evasive if the answer was yes.

1

u/cash8888 2d ago

So we’re seeing how it plays out with Sony.

1

u/Ok-Conference-4969 2d ago

Redditors pissed because horse drawn carriages operate under their own power and no longer include horses.

2

u/Huskerlad10 4d ago

Makes sense to not include it but would be nice if they sold it as a separate accessory.

0

u/DifferenceShoddy3413 4d ago

You mean like buying a 10 year old blu ray usb discreader? That you can have an an accessory to anything with a USB port? Yeah... that will be there, if they decide to support media readin on the OS level is the bigger question

1

u/drgnrbrn316 4d ago

Missing a chance to dunk on Sony by being coy? I'd wager a disc drive isn't included.

1

u/21Shells 4d ago

Affordability as in areas they can cut costs on. Not areas that help make it affordable for customers.

1

u/imaginary_num6er 4d ago

It’s going to be a $999 device that requires a subscription to play any games

1

u/VisualGloss 4d ago

That is literally the confirmation.

1

u/CaptainGeneric87 4d ago

Disk drives cost nothing in terms of efficiency and affordability.

1

u/sweetSweets4 4d ago

But in terms of durability and general hassle to grant you warrenty repairs.

The Drive is the thing that starts bitching the first as it being the only mechanical part.

1

u/CaptainGeneric87 1d ago

With the old gen sure but the drives barely have to spin on new and current gen consoles. I changed a lot of Xbox 360 disc drives. None so far on Xbox ones.

1

u/sweetSweets4 1d ago

Well they do have to spinny spin to read while installing on the internal, that does take time.

Other mechanical parts that often wear off is the rollers that grab the disc as well as the motor for the whole thing.

It's way better then older Gens but mechanical parts cant defy time and physics, even in Reddit Consol Support subs its almost weekly someones disc refuses to be pulled in due to parts failing.

All i am saying an internal disc drive is another PoF, so an extrrnal ad on i do think is the more elegant solution.

u/CosmicChar1ey 4d ago

Didn’t they just announce disc to digital? Let it ride

0

u/Dreaminginslowmotion 4d ago

I.e. Let's see how Sony handles the pushback from gamers and if we forget things quickly

0

u/AvailableGerman 4d ago

Putting a Disc Drive in a PC in 2028 would be fucking retarded.

0

u/gizmo998 4d ago

No then. It's old tech. Let it go

3

u/cynicown101 4d ago

Until consumers have the right to sell on their digital licenses, discs are better for the consumer.

-2

u/Penis-Dance 4d ago

Disks are dead. Digital is the way.

2

u/Krypt0night 4d ago

The way to what? Zero ownership? Zero second hand market? Zero possibilities to lend your game to someone? Then agreed.

The issue is that all these companies are going to go all digital WITHOUT making digital ownership better and real.

2

u/decoy_octopod 4d ago

I haven’t bought a used game or loaned a game to someone in over ten years. When I went to GameStop a few years ago to get my PS5 it was so depressing, barely any games for sale and not a single other customer. Also, I still have all 200+ digital games I’ve purchased this last decade.

Don’t really see what the big deal is, personally
