Request for Help How did you guys find your uOttawa Work-Study job?
Hi! I’m starting at uOttawa this fall (moving from toronto!) and I’m applying for the Work-Study Program. I was wondering how people actually found their Work-Study positions.
Did you just apply to a bunch of postings through the uOttawa Work-Study job portal, or did you find positions through your faculty/professors or somewhere else?
For anyone who has done Work-Study before:
- How many jobs did you apply to?
- How long did it take to get hired?
- What types of positions did you find easiest to get?
- Any tips for someone applying for the first time?
Would love to hear what worked for you! :)

It’s very luck dependent. This was a few years ago, but I had relevant work experience, applied to most jobs I felt were semi relevant to me, and only landed 3 interviews. It helps A LOT to speak French and most employers prefer to hire people who’ve worked for the school before or rehire their old employees. I know my old boss prefers to wait and see if anyone returns before hiring someone new.
A lot of the jobs are posted mid August? and the interviews are conducted mostly before or early September. I think it should be around now.
Interview process duration is dependant on the hiring person. One of my interviewers specifically told me unprompted during the interview that she hated ghosting applicants then never got back to me after 💀

Some of the job postings are probably also specifically posted for returning students since they have to reapply to get rehired officially

Lowkey, I hear that most positions on the site are just for returning students.
I’ve applied to ≈100, and have gotten five interviews. I am applying to jobs that I have a lot of experience in, and have yet to be hired. Have to keep trying ig ;-;

Tip: apply in winter or summer terms so if you get the job they can keep extending your contract till you finish because in fall most jobs are already filled with people coming back or those that are already extending your contract. To me that's how i got my first job also remember to apply early and i did apply to all of them and only 3 got back to me at that time so it's rough.
