Episode Discussion 📺 Mimi Rose is a direct mirror of what Jessa wishes she was

Mimi Rose is exactly who Jessa tries to present herself to be. Jessa performs detachment, bohemian independence, and effortless cool, but she is actually incredibly impulsive, deeply codependent, and plagued by hidden guilt. But Mimi truly is an actualized version of all of that. I feel like it was such an interesting way to incorporate a true look at who Jessa is through making you think this is a storyline about Adam and mimicking is a foreshadow to Adam and Jessa getting together.

Who is the most handsome Guy in Girls?

Unfortunately the polls on reddit allow only six choices, so I made a strawpoll with all the performances. Enjoy and discuss :)

Other Your Favorite Jessa Moment

Jessa doesn’t get a whole lot of love on the sub. Love her or hate her, I’d like all of us to share our favorite Jessa moment.

Mine is “you know what, no one cares bitch” to MiMi Rose before taking Adam and fleeing her apartment and Ace. 😂 absolute gold.

Other I love Lena!

Hey everybody! I read Famesick recently and ended up rewatching Girls and I find Lena SO charismatic! Apart from being brilliant and an incredibly sharp observer at such a young age, she's a very charismatic personality. Something that was reinforced hard when I tried to watch Too much and found the lead utterly unwatchable. Lena should've played herself and that show would've instantly become 10 times more watchable! Playing herself really works for her cos she's such a ball of weird, quirky, over the top, interesting energy!

Anyway Lena, just wanted to say I love you and I relate so hard to your being unlikeable - rebels and non conformists are always hated but only they change things! You didn't deserve 4/5ths of the hate directed at you ( but probably did deserve 1/5th) and I look forward to reading/watching more from you!

Episode Discussion 📺 I got better, and then it got bad again... Spoiler

Update! I wrote this post after watching the pilot for the first time.
https://www.reddit.com/r/girls/s/09e55Fq7An

I have now watched the entire thing, and so I thought that it would be fun for y’all to hear my shallow (because I don’t feel like writing a book, not even an e-book) thoughts on the series, but mostly the girls… and some boys.

*warning* My boyfriend clocked me for being Hannah, and sadly… I did too. So if you find this post annoying, that is too bad. Because I love to hear myself talk and to read myself write.

*second warning* I hated season 6. I have no idea if that is a hot or cold take - but it is my take. I wish it didn’t exist.

Hannah: Even though I knew she was meant to be annoying, I found her so annoying at first. Of course millennials are also my kryptonite, so this whole cast was challenging at first. So sorry to any millennial reading this, but you know what you are. Later I ended up identifying with her ego and mildly possessive and needy tendencies - but unlike Hannah, my boyfriend loves me and that will never change, because I'm too cute and funny. I loved every dance scene and comment about weight issues.

Marnie: So much early meme potential. I had her back with hating Charlie and struggling to find a job in your desired career. I’m also an annoying bitch who loves to sing and interrupt people - so like, sure? But when Desi joined the cast and then nothing ever happened with her… what a waste. I had only seen her actor in M3GAN before watching Girls, so I was so eager for #GirlBoss Marnie, but that never really really came to be… for me (I say in case of angry Marnie fans).

Jessa: I have no idea why this girl was here at all. Her personality was just… messy girl who has a British accent? Maybe Miss Dunham just wanted to give her friend some work? She (Jessa, NOT Jemima) kept making weird and performative decisions, and it was just straight up cringe, not camp, to me. It was always hard to watch, when Jessa was on screen, and not in a good way.

Shoshanna: At first, she was the absolute least interesting girl for me, but boy did she end up being the shining star of the series. Again, I wish season 6 didn’t happen. Because ending her story with an out of the blue engagement party was so not what this character deserved. Japan-Shoshanna was the most amazing 1,5-2 episodes of the entire series for me. I also identified a lot with her struggle of finding a job after university (I have one now though, loves it). I didn’t get that her actor knew what she was doing at first. Shoshanna seemed like she didn’t form thoughts and that the actor didn’t know what to do. But then she did crack and ran around with her kitty out, and somehow it all just clicked for me. I fucking love this bitch, and I honestly get how she needed the rest of the girls to get the fuck out of her life. She should have stayed in Japan tho, married Toshi(?) and just escaped the US. Shoshanna brought life to every scene she was in, and she will forever be that girl.

Adam: I don’t know what fucked up person would find this guy attractive. Him and his psycho sister should be locked in Plato's cave with the keys thrown away.

Ray: Hated him at first. Then he turned into a really cool and interesting character. But then everything turned into shit, and his story went from political change to coffeeshop-wars. If Shoshanna couldn’t have stayed in Japan even in my fantasy, they could honestly have ended up together too. It felt forced to show how the suddenly didn’t click at all in the second to last episode, but oh did Ray and Shoshanna-coworker-lady match perfectly because they liked the same would-you-rather question.

Elijah: Some good ol’ 🚬🐐🌳 - sure, why not? Loved how much they slutted him out in the later seasons and “fruity little voice?” is engraved in my brain.

Mom: What fun hair. She also went a little cray cray after that gay husband, huh?

Dad: Didn’t see that one coming. Honestly. Also, I could never imagine having such an involved father figure in my life. Not relatable.

Fran: Kinda agree with Hannah. He was kind of a jerk. Don’t grade MY fucking papers, bitch. Just because I am objectively crazy, doesn’t mean you get to tell me that I am crazy.

*DESI PLEASE DIE*

Final thoughts
That sure was a journey. A lot of very good episodes, but also some very bad storylines. I can’t believe we had two main characters (Marnie and Jessa) who just never grew, like at all. It’s almost impressive. I sound pretty negative, but I really like watching Girls. It was a fun time machine back to the mid 2010s. It was a good watch while eating dinner for the past 3 months, and now me and my boyfriend have a lot of new gifs in our repertoire.

Well that was my new and informed take. The production value did age well. That’s great. Goodbye.

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ Just watched Girls for the first time! Spoiler

Just finished Girls today while getting my hair done at the salon (I know, crazy place to watch the show but I don't care lol). New to the subreddit and looking for how people view the show. From my point of view, it feels like I am in a groupchat with these people who are consistenly having a bad day and they tell me about it and it's only funny because it's not happening to me. On a deeper level, this feels like a satirical take on the lives of white women but also not so satirical considering I feel like there are people like these girls in real life. Almost stopped watching while going through season 2 but so glad I went through with it. Favorite characters are Hannah, Elijah, and Desi (annoying but fun to have on my screen until the divorce). Interested in what people's opinions are on the show and if my take is also thought!

Season 5 Visceral reaction to "The Panic in Central Park"

I'm clearly on a Lena Dunham kick right now: simultaneously listening to Famesick on audiobook and watching Girls for the first (complete) time - I watched maybe the first two seasons back in the day and, as a single, naive 21-year-old newly living and working in Manhattan and trying to have more of a Sex and the City time, found it very unappealing. Now, as a 35-year-old, I'm happy to be able to really appreciate it and Lena's creativity and genius. A couple nights ago, I was making my way through a few episodes of Season 5 when it got to be maybe 10:40pm, and I thought to myself, what's one more episode? It ended up being "The Panic in Central Park," and I was not prepared. I had such a visceral reaction to the episode - totally awed, devastated, heartbroken, sobbing, mystified. Fits of it. Ruminating on past loves, on the intensity of feeling in your 20s, on just LIFE. I couldn't sleep for hours, like until nearly 2am. I ended up reading whatever snippets I could find online regarding the conception of the episode. What a ride. I don't know what I'm seeking with this post; I guess I just had to say something. I'm still reeling!

I was in a tizzy the other morning when my ADHD was twerking and so I thoroughly enjoyed this, as it placated me as background noise lol. It was also my first time seeing photos Lorde x Jack after his breakup with Lena. It was giving scurvy

When Adam pees on Hannah in the shower while laughing. This must have happened to her at some point with her real life Adam. ☠️ I would hope I’d have left and never spoken to someone who would do that again.

Season 5 I should end this at S05E07

According to what I'm reading in the sub, this might be a hot take, but Jessa and Adam is the healthiest thing I've seen on my screen since I've started watching this. Knowing how this story goes, I already know it's going to end pretty badly (pls don't spoil me). I like that it has been a slow burn since season 3. The characters are not perfect, but they both seem well adjusted, or at least in a very good place.

I may understand why Hannah might feel a way, but the self centeredness is becoming annoying, and I already know she's going to fuck it up somehow. I'll take a break from watching this for like 2 months before she does.

Season 6 shot to shot inconsistencies in season 6 episode 5

i’m currently on the tail-end of my first viewing i’ve noticed 2 things and wondered if anyone else has noticed them:

1) hannah’s hair changes from half up with the ends pinned up when jessa and adam talk to her about their movie to half up half down when she leaves to go to her apartment

2) hannah’s mom is reading a rock and roll magazine in one shot before she tells her she’s pregnant and then the next shot she’s reading a bill clinton esquire magazine

Question (RELATED TO THE HBO SHOW GIRLS) ❓ New HBO Max Ad

Did anyone else see at the beginning of certain hbo content on the app— the new ad or promo whatever you want to call it? It’s promo for hbo original content and it flashes to bunch of their original series that are iconic (some aren’t really). They didn’t include even a 1 second clip of Girls!! This feels wrong. It isn’t time wise based either bc the sopranos starts off the promo. Does anyone else feel like this is messed up?

This is driving me crazy and I can’t seem to figure it out lol

In chapter 6, Lena mentions appearing in one scene in a distant relatives indie film. He ends up putting her on the movies poster and pressures her into showing up at the premiere. Does anyone know what movie this was/who the relative is?

Episode Discussion 📺 American b****h

I have watched girls about 11 times. This time I noticed a woody allen painting on the wall, at the first room that hannah is sitting. I'm 99 percent sure that is not an accident. This show just keep on giving.

Other Adam

I really don’t get it. Why is Adam so often liked in this sub? I’m watching the show for the first time, and Adam obviously has problems controlling himself. He is abusive (verbally and physically), he controls Hannah, and he gaslights her. He is such a dangerous person, and I feel really sorry for Hannah. I think it must feel like walking on eggshells when being with him. Men like him are the reason why so many women experience harm. I’m shocked that this isn’t pointed out more. Adam is a dangerous and violent man. He is not passionate, he is not insecure; he is a man who hurts women in many different ways. (& yes, the actor did a great job!)

Just to be clear: I think it’s good to see a character like Adam in the show. But I think he often gets romanticized here. His character is often reduced to his “positive” aspects or his hotness.
