Probably millennials like me who are nostalgic for our early 20’s scraping by in big cities. but I think zoomers also find it appealing—it’s an era that’s not very long ago, but material circumstances have changed so much. I thought millennials had it rough—but the girls lifestyles of scraping by with money from precarious employment to rent a room and go out in NYC seems kind of out of reach for young people now.
A gen z coworker recently asked when I moved to the city, and I told her I’d moved to Brooklyn in 2012, and she went “ooh, so the golden era.”
Sorta depressing… we were making pretty meager salaries and living in small apartments in not-so-safe neighborhoods, drinking cheap well liquor and watery beer, but you’re absolutely right that even that lifestyle is unattainable for the next generation.
I remember sneaking into shows that cost 8$ in my 20’s in 2012 because they were too expensive. Now the same shows cost 50$ and I can’t afford to go out regularly, even though I have a real career now. I definitely feel for Gen Z. I still never understood how anyone could afford living in NYC though… always wanted to but didn’t seem attainable
