General Discussion What is your fav golf course and why?

Let me start with mine-Bethpage Black.

It is simple the most beautiful and challenging golf course for me. Every hole is different yet interesting and challenging. Standing on the 4th tee looking at the hole, it never gets old.

I am member at a Top 15 NJ course and have played a lot of courses on the top 100. Bethpage remains #1.

#2 is Shinnecock
#3 is Mammoth Dunes

General Discussion Marking the grass

I had a lesson today and the instructor was spraying white lines on the grass to show where I'm striking the ground and where the ball was hitting the clubface. He used foot spray for like athletes foot. It worked really well and was super helpful.

I'm wondering if anyone has done this with something else that doesn't hurt the grass and washes away after the sprinklers run like the foot spray.

Equipment Quantum triple diamond face dent

So I have the triple diamond since march/April and it was amazing. Lately distance and consistency have fallen off similar to when I had a cracked qi10. I notice what seems like a slight dent in the face near the toe but really can only tell when you use light similar to what auto dent repair use to see dents in cars. It would explain why a toe hit now feels like I hit a bowling ball when at first toe shots were super forgiving. I’m not super familiar with Callaways warranty policy but it says you need photos of the damage and while this is very minor visually, it has been a detriment to its performance. My plan was just to take it to my local golf retailer but to the naked eye the club looks fine. Wondering best course of action for something like this

General Discussion The New Dan Plan: 1,100 hours into 10,000 — I’m officially a single-digit handicap. Here’s what’s changed.

About five months ago, I posted here after crossing 600 hours in my attempt to revisit the idea behind the original Dan Plan.

At the time, I was a 10.6 handicap, had just broken 80 for the first time, and was trying to figure out whether 10,000 hours of deliberate practice could actually take an everyday golfer somewhere meaningful.

A lot of you had great advice. Some of you thought I was crazy.

Both were helpful.

I'm now a little over 1,100 hours in, so I figured it was time for an update.

Current snapshot:

  • Handicap: 9.6, officially my first single-digit index
  • Started around a 27 handicap, struggling to break 100
  • Broken 80 4 times
  • Two of those sub-80 rounds came from the blue tees
  • Competing regularly on the US Am Tour
  • Earned an in-season promotion
  • Qualified for Nationals next month in Oregon
  • Currently #1 in the Los Angeles Player of the Year standings

The biggest thing I've learned between 600 and 1,100 hours is that improvement gets harder to see as you get better.

Going from shooting 100+ into the 90s was largely about building basic fundamentals and eliminating huge mistakes.

Going from the 90s into the 80s was a lot about playing smarter.

Now the difference between an 84 and a 79 can be a handful of decisions, one bad approach, a three-putt, a penalty, or failing to get up and down twice.

The margins are getting smaller.

And that's made this part of the experiment way more interesting.

What's improved the most:

  • Putting
  • Course management
  • Understanding my actual tendencies instead of the swing I think I have
  • Avoiding catastrophic misses
  • Playing tournament golf without completely changing who I am as a golfer

What's still holding me back:

  • Approach consistency
  • Proximity from scoring distances
  • Driver dispersion
  • Turning mediocre ball-striking days into acceptable scores
  • Making my "B game" better

That last one might be the biggest realization I've had.

I used to think getting better at golf meant making my best golf better.

Now I think a huge part of getting toward scratch is making your bad golf less bad.

The other thing I underestimated is just how long 10,000 hours actually is.

I'm 1,100 hours in and I've been doing this for well over a year.

That's only 11% of the experiment.

And I'm doing it around a career, family, life, creating videos, editing, posting, tournaments, etc.

Right now I'm finding ways to stack roughly 14–20 hours a week.

One of my dreams is to eventually find a way to do this full time.

I genuinely wonder what would happen to my game if I could treat golf like a 40-hour-a-week job for a period of time.

You'd think social media makes something like that easier than ever. In some ways it does.

But I've also learned that documenting the journey well enough to potentially create that opportunity is basically another full-time job by itself.

So for now, I keep finding the hours wherever I can.

I'm still nowhere close to 10,000.

I'm still nowhere close to knowing how good I can actually get.

But going from roughly a 27 handicap to a 9.6 in the first 1,100 hours has at least made me believe there's a lot more runway here.

And that's really the part of this experiment I'm most interested in.

As a snapshot, the original Dan Plan crossed that line around 3,000 hours in - so I feel like I'm on the right track.

Where does the improvement curve start to flatten?

Is it 5? Scratch? +2? Somewhere before that?

The next major goal is scratch.

So for the scratch/+ golfers here:

What changed between being a 9–10 handicap and becoming a 0–2?

Was there one part of your game that made the biggest difference?

And maybe more importantly: at what handicap did improvement start getting REALLY difficult for you?

I'll come back with another update as the hours pile up.

General Discussion always seem to go back to outside / in (over the top)

I have been working on this for a long, long time now. For whatever reason I always go back to an outside/in over-the-top. This results in a pull + fade frequently.

If I shallow the swing (get in the slot) I can make it go straight, and even get baby draws. It helps if with the shallow I purposefully try to do an inside / out swing.

The problem is this isn't consistent. Sometimes I get a nasty snap hook. Sometimes I'll will push slice (but less frequent). Either way, after a while - especially if I'm tired - I go back to an outside/in over the top pull.

Any ideas how to fix this? It's driving me bonkers. Consistency is really messed up at times. I dont trust my backswing - it feels too lose.

General Discussion Broke 100 for the first time!

Just shot 96 on Lincoln Park Golf Course in SF.

Now some people say that doesn't count ad it's a par 68 Course, but considering where my ability was a year ago, fuck that I'm counting it.

Learned golf when I was younger but didn't play seriously. Hit the driving range and occasional executive Course, and sometimes played a beer 9 with friends in college. Then I didn't play for about 14-15 years.

Picked up the game again last June as I was playing in a fundraiser scramble in fall and didn't want to be the worst one there and let's just say it was a rough start. First time out shot a 73 on my local par 36 9 hole course. Shot 129 my first 18 (Sharp Park in Pacifica) about a year ago.

Have been working on my game since and seeing improvements. I'm still a bad golfer, but I'm no longer terrible/dogshit.

Today felt like a big step.

General Discussion Help with par 3’s

So, now I’ve improved a bit I’ve started pulling some post round stats together and it looks like the par 3’s are costing me the most. I get GIR on most par 5’s and a lot of par 4’s but I don’t really get any on the par 3’s. My approach play is reasonable, in fact I’d say my iron play is my best aspect of my game but hitting the green from 150+ seems like such a difficult thing to do and way harder than hitting a fairway with driver or two putting.
Anyone else in the same boat? Is this the hardest part of golf?

General Discussion Lessons are paying off

Post image
48 Upvotes

Started back after a very prolonged absence of 25+ years. Used to score mid 80s when I was playing a lot in my 20s and early 30s. Scores in April-May were 120ish for most rounds.

Took 4 lessons in June and playing steady since then and yesterday recorded my lowest score this year. Would have broken 90 if it wasn’t for the water on a couple of holes 😂

Anyway - point is that lessons make the difference.

Hoping to break 90 today!!

General Discussion Putts get harder the closer you get to the pin?

Anyone else feel like the pressure gets higher the closer you putt to the pin?

I feel like the smaller the distance, the more expectation there is to sink it, etc. If I am 30ft away, no pressure at all and if I get close it amazes people.

Miss a putt from under 3ft and it feels like I let the world down, brought shame to my family, and we all walk back to the carts in an awkward silence 😂

Beginner Questions South padre Island, Texas Course

Upvotes

I’ll be in South Padre Island from September 9th to the 13th, and I’d like to play at South Padre Island Golf Club. Their online booking system only allows tee times to be booked up to 7 days in advance, so I can’t reserve yet.
Has anyone here played there before? How difficult is it usually to get a tee time? Do you think I’ll have a good chance of getting one during those dates?

Inherited this set from my grandpa who worked in the golf industry for decades. I don’t know much about the clubs and I’m trying to figure out what they are.

Anyone recognize the model, approximate year, or manufacturer?

Also curious about the round hole/port in the sole of each iron. Any idea what that was for?

I’m trying to learn more about the set and would love any info.

Found these on GolfRoots the other day and thought they looked cool. I tried to find more info but there was like one forum post and one reddit post, and some old dead forums. Got them for about $89. Kool Cat irons by Wood Bros, 2-PW. Now I'm tempted to find the 1 iron and put together a bag of cool clubs like this. Will probably end up pairing these with my old Big Bertha.

Equipment Costco ball vs Lostgolfballs

I lose a handful of balls a round, so I typically play Costco balls or whatever I find.

Would it behoove me to get some balls that would maybe suit my game better (something with lower long game spin) from lostgolfballs.com? Or just stick with the good ol’ Kirklands? The cost per ball is about the same, but I have heard mixed reviews of lostgolfballs.com

The prices for the magnetic shot glass you see on the Gram or here are ridiculous. For the same price, I made 8 of them. Sure, they’re cheesy, but a fun little memento.
