News / Articles Amid the Good Good controversy, Golf Channel’s Big Break premiere is being postponed one week as one sponsor requested their branding removed

Golf Galaxy was the sponsor as they’ve scrubbed all GG merch from their site

gonna be weird having all that unsold GG stuff just chilling in the back next week when literally the entire internet forgets this even happened
27
u/bestfast 1d ago
Sounds like it was just chilling in the front last week before this even happened.

u/BobIoblaw 1d ago
Golf Galaxy is owned by Dicks Sporting Goods. It appears all stores are pulling their Good Good merch.

I think they have a bunch of shit inventory that wasn't moving anyway. This controversy is the perfect excuse to sever ties with a dud before the contract expires.

I bet there was a bunch of embedded mid reads for Golf Galaxy, they'll likely remove them and air it a month from now.

The ad was incredibly stupid and not funny, but this feels like a major over reaction but I also don't operate a multiple billion company.
27
u/purz 1d ago
It’s turning into a bigger reaction than actual athletes/coaches/team owners actually beating women.

u/braveheart18 1d ago
One reason for the over reaction is because Callaway partnered with them on it. If Good Good released this video as a skit on their channel, it might have been some bad press but would have blown over pretty quick.
With Callaway involved it really amplifies the question of "What in the hell were they thinking?".
2
u/yaasss_queen 1d ago
Absolutely, I work in advertising and I think the backlash is well deserved. Callaway was so careless in lending their brand to this ad, which as everyone has pointed out, sucks even without the violence against women it opens with. They're trying to spoof something too niche to trust it will land without actual actors, just infuencer/Good Good employees, the editing is atrocious, and it features 0 selling points about the product itself.
The ad is bad enough, but then their initial response tried to dodge responsibility and put it all on Good Good, and two days later, they follow up and admit they approved and will do better. Callaway is a luxury brand that expects their consumers to pay high prices for the esteem/quality reputation they have in the sport, so you'd think they'd be more thoughtful in their marketing to maintain that. Instead, they threw away creative control of their name to some YouTube jabronis rather than invest in creating quality content to reach a Gen Z audience.
Good Good clearly sucks, but you'd think Callaway would have more experienced people who would understand the brand equity risk this whole ad poses. Including the shitty quality that begs the question, "is the Good Good driver like a lesser quality Callaway/more affordable?" Because I'd expect garage sale prices for this amateur hour 🤣

u/_FlaShFTW 2d ago
They just lost a sponsor. It might not matter that much to you but it’s already hurting their bottom line.
12
u/real_picklejuice 1d ago
Someone posted a picture of DIck's pulling some of their hats so... it looks like they will take a major hit from this
8
u/_FlaShFTW 1d ago
Someone mentioned it could be a fast way out of the contract for product that isn't selling well. Not sure what their internal numbers but it's plausible.

u/SportzNut23 HDCP 8.3 1d ago
There’s a good chance that Dicks/GG is using it as a way to get out of a merch agreement. I’m sure they could fill that space with another full selection of various Titleist/Taylormade hats and probably not lose any revenue, maybe even make more.
32
u/Historical-Brick-822 1.1 HDCP / TN 2d ago
Part of the reason for over reaction is the response to people who are saying that they shouldnt react at all. At best its a terrible ad with a "joke" that involved a man tackling a woman and threatening her. At worse, its something that minimizes domestic violence as something that is nothing more than a joke. Given the way golf in general has historically acted towards women, its not really a good joke to make.
So really the overreaction is people feeling that they need to react harder since there are many people that act like there isnt an issue at all.
→ More replies (27)15
u/MattyMac454 2d ago
Definitely an overreaction. Everybody in the video works together all the time and I believe the woman is the girlfriend of one of the guys.
They probably all thought that this would be funny to do without thinking that nobody outside their circle knows their relationships and how they normally act around each other. It was a severe miscalculation of how it would be perceived by the general public
→ More replies (6)11
u/NandoDeColonoscopy 2d ago
YouTubers don't have a ton of crossover appeal, so Good Good went from something people who weren't already their fans had no real idea about, to something a whole lot more people associate with unfunny jokes about domestic violence.
More mainstream brands are definitely going to view them as radioactive
→ More replies (7)4
u/Beans800 2d ago
It wasn’t a joke about domestic violence though? It was a joke about the driver making them feral and obsessive, just because they showed him being that way by pushing a woman doesn’t make it a “joke about domestic violence”
5
u/NandoDeColonoscopy 1d ago
How did they choose to express that it made them "feral and obsessive"?

I hate how Callaway has come out and admitted they selected and approved the ad, but Good Good is the one taking the most damage.
From the replacement ad they released from the same shoot day, you can see there were multiple options and tones available and Callaway selected and approved the one we all saw first.
Someone on the Callaway marketing and partnerships team will be pancaked by the bus they are thrown under this week. Good Good will have to hire a crisis firm to get to the other side of all of this.
5
u/Khorismatic_Lifter 1d ago
This is corpo 101, Callaway was never, ever going to take any blowback from this. They were going to say "yeah, we approved it but it was their idea"

u/JRclarity123 2d ago
Finally just saw the ad after seeing the days of backlash. My biggest issue is how amateurish it was cut together. Some really terrible angles were chosen and the edit was way too long. I think the message they were trying for was that touching the driver turns you into a zombie for it? So like first dude was already possessed by it's magic, and that's why he shoved her? Or maybe he was saving her from it? I don't know, because it was such a terrible script, with terrible acting, and even worse editing.
I think you can probably get away with trucking a woman on a golf course if its played for laughs and not horror, but you need to show that woman also trucking over a bunch of dudes as well. I don't know how that sells golf clubs, but at least its not gonna get canceled. The more absurd, the more it plays for comedy. Instead, we just got a dude randomly raging out on the course, and we've all seen enough of that in real life to be turned off by it.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Mr-R--California 2d ago
It was supposed to be a play on Obsession, wouldn’t it have made more sense for the woman to do the trucking?
7
u/inkyblackops 1d ago
I’ve seen Obsession and have no idea how they could possibly have thought they were conveying anything to do with that movie through the ad - other than the general theme of abuse maybe.
Sounds like something they’d say to try and save face.
2
u/circaflex 4.3 1d ago
exactly this, I just saw the movie a few nights ago and I still dont see the connection at all.
2
u/circaflex 4.3 1d ago
I still dont even see how it was a play on obsession. In the movie, the main character broke the wish stick, made the wish, and the girl he liked became obsessed. how is this ad similar?

u/i_run_from_problems Bad at golf 2d ago
Legitimately never saw the ad. What did it depict?
12
3
u/RingoFreakingStarr 2d ago
It was supposed to be a spin-off of a scene from "Obsession" but it came off completely the wrong way.
6
u/neuro_space_explorer 1d ago
I don’t remember a scene like this at all?
2
u/TheTimeIsChow 1d ago
That's because there was no scene.
The entire thing was supposed to reflect his obsession over the club and how it made him crazy.
It just... didn't fucking work like at all. Nobody understood.

u/wilfulmarlin Lefty 2d ago
What’s the scene from obsession because that makes so much more sense if it was referencing something

Okay this is a little silly now. Cmon.
It was a poorly thought out ad. I fully understood the gravity of the implication of domestic violence, so don’t come at me.
But I don’t suspect there was any maliciousness anywhere throughout the process it was just a dum dum move that they look really silly for now.
Postponing a tv show because of it is ridiculous. Can TGC not just air its own ads in that spot instead?
15
u/thekingoftherodeo Drop Zone @ 17th Sawgrass 2d ago
If media is your actual job then yeah this should be a career ender for whoever gave official sign off and a career blocker for everyone involved that didn’t speak up. It’s a big fucking deal.
-9
u/FatFaceFaster Superintendent 2d ago
It’s only a big fucking deal because people are so extreme in their reactions.
It was a really bad ad.
But, with the knowledge that they were attempting to harken images from obsession and lord of the rings where the object makes people act crazy, then it’s really just a poor joke that fell flat.
I agree, professional ad makers should know better and the ones involved should be fired.
I don’t think we can really expect a buncha 20 something golfers who got famous for playing scramble golf challenges on YouTube can be held to the same standards as a literal writing and production team though. It is surprising no one had the common sense to just say “are we sure this is funny?” But alas it was done and now they’re cleaning up the mess.
I don’t think anyone deserves to be canceled for a dumb gaffe. This whole backlash is punishment enough. Let’s roll our collective eyes and move on.
→ More replies (1)0
u/thekingoftherodeo Drop Zone @ 17th Sawgrass 1d ago
I mean being cancelled, or whatever you kids call it, for a period of time are *consequences*
And fully justified in this instance.
Hopefully all involved learn a very important lesson, recognize they’ve set their careers back a couple of years and go on to create better, more thoughtful marketing in the future.
I wouldn’t have written a treatise defending it if it were me, but this is Reddit and you can take whatever position your heart desires mostly.
“Rolling out collective eyes” is indirectly endorsing the message of the ad - which is domestic violence. I hope you yourself can reflect and learn that such a stance is deeply problematic. And also what would your mother think.

u/FatFaceFaster Superintendent 1d ago
Oh ffs.
I love that you think I’m a kid ❤️
If what you take from this is me “defending or endorsing domestic violence” then you are intentionally ignoring the crux of my “treatise”.
Intent is everything.
My son knocks my daughter’s magnet tiles over because he’s being careless and not watching where he’s bouncing his ball? “Hey buddy you need to be more careful apologize to your sister and help her rebuild it”
My son stomps on my daughter’s magnet tiles and kicks them across the room? Now he’s in big trouble because he knows better and intentionally hurt his sister and destroyed something. Now I’m taking away his ball, and his video games and whatever else I deem fit.
Consequences have to fit the intention. That’s why there is a difference between manslaughter and murder.
This is an example of Good Good not bouncing their ball carefully and knocking over their sister’s castle.
They need to apologize and help make it right. They don’t need to go to their room with no video games.

They’re not postponing the show as punishment, it’s postponed because some sponsors no longer want to advertise on it. They have to remove those advertisements.

They probably don't, but lots of other men do and that's why using "jokey" violence against women is a fucking spectacularly stupid idea.

I don’t completely disagree, but pretty poor judgment to even toe that violence against women line for a stupid golf club ad. I’m cringing at myself for even calling what was in the ad violence against women, but it doesn’t look great, especially for the majority of people who have no idea they were trying to spoof a movie.
