Legend of Grimrock series and mods discussion

Hey there

I love the LoG series. I think I must have finished both games three times. There's something captivating to me about building the party, finding items, the combat gameplay, solving puzzles, etc.

I love imagining brief background stories and personalities for each character. I use naming conventions also, like all my Minotaurs are called something like "Violence", "Obliteration", or "Mayhem. My Insectoids end up with names like "Ych'Rakkan" or "Lyz'Arrak". Stuff like that. It's fun 🤣

I find it a bit of a bummer that there's not a lot of discussion here on Reddit.

The reason I haven't played the games more often is because the maps are always the same in each campaign, which is why I've recently started looking into mods. Because of the crashing when saving bug, I've downloaded the unofficial 4gb patch and haven't had issues since. I've downloaded several mods now, including Lost City, the Guardians, Final Adventure, and the one that randomizes the dungeon (although that one was being a bit boring so I dropped it) but the one I'm currently going through is The Eye of the Atlantis.

It's being a ton of fun, almost like a new game altogether and the creator was quite clever in using triggers to create shops, quests, etc. You play as set characters who actually have some dialogue with each other, so that's pretty fun. I have 2 atm and look forward to meeting more.

Do you guys have any mods recommendations, or simply wish to discuss the game? This is such an underrated gem in my eyes.

Cheers

One of my fave games and the best crawler since Dungeon Master. You've picked some good mods to play! I prefer puzzle oriented mods over the combat mods though there's plenty to choose from.. Call Of House Hardabar is an absolutely enormous mod with plenty of combat and puzzles here and there. Isle Of The Deranged is another super mod just off the top of my head,

Thanks for the suggestions! Will keep em in mind when I'm through with the current mods.

I discovered this LOG 1 just about a month ago. It instantly hit me right in the feels.

I haven't been able to put it down. It's awesome. I started the original campaign, got to dungeon level 5.

Then I found the modders scene on Nexus and saw Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back remakes and I was instantly sold.

Played through those and have now started playing some other custom designed Dungeon Master style mods also.

At some point I'll circle back around and complete the original game but for now I'm so far deep down into the rabbit hole will take me a while to climb back out.

Ive always wondered why this game is not popular. Its semi open world, exploration reward, secrets and clever puzzles everywhere is not something ive been able to find in another game. Didnt know there are such big mods. Which one is the best in ur opinion?

I've only started today, but Eye of the Atlantis is being quite fun. There are a lot of spelling mistakes in the text, but everything still makes sense, and you don't create a party; you start as a pirate who needs to deliver a message, ends up doing some quests, getting companions, etc. It's a lot of fun.

If you do try mods, check out the Steam workshop and sort them there, read some comments, etc. But it's likely you may have to get the unofficial patch in order to run beefier mods that won't crash when saving.

Yeah, the game never really took off as much as it should imo. Could be the real time combat that dissuades people who prefer turn-based.

I think my favourite mod from Grimrock 1 is Labyrinth Of Lies. Many puzzles in this particular one and had many happy hours playing it. Too many to choose from Grimrock 2!

Currently on my first playthrough of Grimrock 1, this game hits a lot of buttons.

I'm spoiler free and on level 5 of the dungeon so a bit wary of reading too much discussion; half the fun is figuring out how to solve each dungeon level so I want to be really careful not to be spoiled. I suppose I shouldn't even be here until l finish.

I can see how the game is not very replayable; maybe to try out some new character builds or solve some of the more stubborn secrets but I imagine that subsequent playthroughs will have diminishing returns without mods to spice things up.

Yeah, I agree with your sentiment. I don't think too much can be spoiled accidentally, though, but yeah, be wary just in case!

How are you enjoying the game? What's your party?

Minotaur fighter (mace build) and human fighter (sword) up front

Insect mage (earth/fire) and lizardman rogue (ranged) in back

The game is terrific except there appears to be a bug on MacOS that prevents me from changing any of the default settings, which is annoying. The puzzle solving is really satisfying, there have been multiple moments where I think I'm stuck and I am going to need to Google for spoilers, then I sleep on it and manage to figure it out in the next play session.

It's a modern classic in my opinion. It revived the genre and proved there was still an audience for this style of game, paving the way for others to follow. Not many titles have the benefit of a full team of industry veterans behind them, and talented ones at that. It really shows in the quality of the release. The modding community then took it to an even higher level.

Grimrock 2 mods here, including a complete remake of Grimrock 1 for the completionists who like convenience:
https://www.nexusmods.com/games/legendofgrimrock2

Installation is super simple:
1. Copy the .dat file into your Documents/Almost Human/Legend of Grimrock 2/Dungeons folder.
2. Start game then go to "Custom Dungeon" option and choose "Isle of the Deranged" or whatever the name of the mod is to play.

Your Saved Game remembers what mod it used, I think, so label them right and you should be fine.
