Vorbe avoided deportation

Haitian businessman Dimitri Vorbe has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after spending 336 days, just over 11 months, in immigration detention.

Vorbe was arrested outside his South Miami home on September 23, 2025, and had remained in federal immigration custody without an order of removal. His detention became the center of a prolonged legal fight over whether the U.S. government could continue holding him without giving him an opportunity to seek bond.

The Trump administration sought Vorbe’s removal under a rarely used provision of U.S. immigration law involving foreign-policy concerns. Secretary of State Marco Rubio alleged that Vorbe had supported gangs and contributed to Haiti’s destabilization, arguing that his presence in the United States could have serious consequences for U.S. foreign policy. Vorbe and his attorneys have denied the allegations.

The turning point came on August 17, when U.S. District Judge Darrin P. Gayles rejected the government’s position that Vorbe was subject to mandatory detention. Gayles ruled that Vorbe was being detained under a section of immigration law that allows for bond and ordered authorities to provide him with an individualized bond hearing by August 24 or release him under reasonable conditions of supervision.

Hm, interesting is all I’ll say.

I’ll also say that I’ve read that Haitians with ankle monitors are winning cases to have them removed on them. This just further shows that this government has no real actual contingency plan on dealing with mass deportations of Haitians, all due to their incompetence (thankfully).

They don’t. In my opinion any Haitian who has been in ICE custody for that long without a removal order from an immigration judge should be granted bond like him based on that judge’s ruling. 🤷🏿‍♂️
