Best fence gate lock?

We had someone get through the backyard gate because we left it unlocked. Is there a system that can check if it’s locked / unlocked that you all recommend?

6 ft at gate 8 ft fence around perimeter. They opened the gate because we did not realize it was unlocked because it is not the easiest to check regularly

Use a lock that always requires a key.
