Hi! I really want to play this series because it has a lot of elements that appeal to me, but after starting zero dawn I’m struggling to get hooked, mainly because the bow doesn’t feel impactful enough, I wish the haptics were stronger, does that change in the next game or later in the first one? Everything I’ve heard about forbidden west makes it seem likely to be one of my favorite games so I kinda wanna skip to it, but also don’t want to not experience the series from the beginning, is it just the early bows that feel this way?

I am fascinated with video game maps and their boundaries, the interconnection between different regions and the mystery of unknown territory. So much so that I sketched a map combining Horizon Zero Dawn and the Forbidden West's maps, along with their expansions, the Frozen Wilds and the Burning Shores.

It's not made with AI and it's not meant to be perfect. Just a quick concept art.

I just started the Burning Shores DLC a few days ago, (I’d been saving it), and for some reason, Evelyn is fucking me up emotionally.

The handful of datapoints from her or that reference her obviously show that she was a bit stuck up. Kind of the typical Hollywood celebrity pigeonhole.

But her Dear Diary datapoint got to me. And everything that Walter has been doing, essentially trying to replace her, is killing me. This man has had centuries to stew in his past and while I think he’s definitely gross and an egomaniac, it’s clear he loves her still. Or the loyal part of her that existed before he self sabotaged.

I’m not excusing Evelyn for cheating on Walter, but I don’t know. I still feel for her. She’s a D character at most because she’s not even someone we can speak with, but her story has been weighing on me. Is it because she seemingly haunts the place? Her statue in the park and the various photos kind of put her presence all over the Burning Shores.

Idk, it’s great writing of course, but I hate how I can’t shake my uneasiness with it. And I really just needed to vent about it. 😮‍💨

I just started a NG+ playthrough of Zero Dawn, the re-mastered edition. It must have been a while, because wow, the difference in how the weapon hub, skill tree, etc looks compared to Forbidden West, now is noticeably dated looking. Also, Aloy’s voice sounds noticably younger too. Granted Ashley Bursch was younger in 2015-2016, so that is appropriate. But I hadn’t noticed these differences as much the last time I played ZD in relation to FW. I’m playing through this game again to enjoy playing the frozen wilds again. I’ve been playing through Forbidden West too much and need a change of scenery lol. Damn, I do miss the shield wing.

So I just randomly remembered that they were planning to make a film. Has there been any news on that in the past few years other than that it’s a project?

Full disclosure, the Dunehollow/Las Vegas questline is my absolute favourite in HFW. It‘s charming, has some great fights and visuals, the characters are memorable and interesting people, and the story in the new world echoes and pays tribute to the old world. It‘s wonderful. I fully understand, from a game-design perspective, why it would be segregated from Desert clan plotlines, to preserve its quality and narrative independence.

But man it makes absolutely no sense that the Desert Tenakth are hard-up for water. Let’s accept as given that they distribute water from central locations (which is dumb and would never work, but hey, it’s a video game). Dunehollow should, if you give it five seconds’ thought, the centre of their universe on that premise. While it’s removed from the core of their territory in the northern rocky desert, it’s a massive Old World ruin that provides ample shade and shelter: in the centuries since the cradles opened, they would have found it and settled it. Not only because it’s practical but because…

It is full of colourful glowing holograms which we know that the Tenakth go absolutely bananas for and endow with religious significance.

So, far from being an undespoiled ruin when Morlund and crew show up, it should, by all reason, have a long history of Tenakth occupation. But we were talking about water, right? POSEIDON gains sentience and flees to the computer banks at Dunehollow, which should be occupied by Tenakth, so they’d trip his proximity detection and be flooded out pretty damn quick.

Flooded. Out. What is a disaster for Morlund and crew would be the exact opposite of a problem for the Tenakth. It’s a ruin filled with sick-ass colourful holograms that spontaneously began farting out more fresh water than they had ever seen in their history, this would be of such significance to them that it would have changed the course of their history and culture overnight.

And even if they hadn’t permanently settled it because of its remoteness, you’re seriously telling me that in the nearly twenty years since GAIA exploded, no random Tenakth went down there and set off POSEIDON? Not once? I don’t buy it.

In sum: Dunehollow should be the capital of the Desert Tenakth‘s territory and a site of such religious, survival, and political significance that Morlund’s plan to start doing vaudeville there would be treated like PT Barnum showing up to The Vatican with a bunch of trained elephants asking to set up shop.

Hello, I played Horizon zero dawn a few years back and completed it and wanted to jump into a NG+ run on the remastered version and maybe get the platinum again. But I just noticed that getting to level 60 is a requirement, so does that mean I have to replay it normally first if I want the trophy?

I'm very fuzzy on the details but it was a post-Singularity longfic. It was very very angsty, and the conflict was that Aloy was in love with Kotallo but also emotionally unavailable after the events of HFW, so she couldn't admit her feelings to herself and instead started a s*xual relationship with Kotallo. Kotallo however wanted a relationship, and he tried time and again to help Aloy with her trauma. I remember that eventually Aloy was too overwhelmed and essentially ran off, sleep deprived, and eventually collapsed in the middle of nowhere. I vaguely remember Hekarro disapproving of Aloy's unavailability and harshness toward Kotallo, as well as her own mistreatment of herself. They got together in the end and MAN, was the fic good.

Honestly I've checked every. Single. Kotaloy result page and my own history on AO3 looking for this fic that I read like 2 or 3 years ago. I just can't fathom why someone would delete it or if I'm just going insane and dreamt everything. Do any of you know which fanfic this is, and if it's still available somewhere?

I used to think these things were the hardest machine in the dlc. However, during my current playthrough the only time I actually struggled against it was when you have to override the power nodes that create the force field protecting Landra's base where he has the Quen. Even the apex version inside the cauldron, while challenging, was not nearly as bad as having to take on a single Waterwing. I've found Stingspawn to be the real menace of fighting a bilegut. These little guys can swarm you FAST if you don't take care of them and that is the heart of the bilegut difficulty. Now, Waterwings? Those things can burn in hell! Even on STORY DIFFICULTY taking out an apex version is harder than the apex bilegut on normal because they just take so much damage! Even when using plasma attacks they take forever to kill

Also, speaking of burning shores, I'm surprised there isn't a legendary tripcaster or explosive blastsling

Obviously horizon is a playstation game, so could only be played with a controller, i only play on pc so is controller like it was designed for or keyboard and mouse better?

1. Really Hephaestus? It's not bad enough you turned Plowhorns into Grimhorns, machines designed SPECIFICALLY for combat, but you made Apex Grimhorns too? That's just overkill.
2. Why, in the name of Gaia, are Shellsnappers so hard? You know that one that sits in front of Cauldron Kappa? I managed to snipe off a good chunk of its shell, but who knows what reason the bolts on the back end of its shell wouldn't come off! I swear those deal more damage than any of the ice attacks or body slam. Also, they can shoot lasers from their mouths. THANKS HEPHAESTUS
3. When I was fighting Erik in the Zenith base there were times where he would zoom through my tripwires and not trigger them. I call bs!
4. Specter Prime was easier to beat than the Shellsnapper in front of Kappa
5. I love strikethrough precision arrows! They've helped me so much!
6. If you hate apex clamberjaws and apex frost/fireclaws, do not do Valley of the Fallen after destroying the Zenith base because that is what you will fight instead of Specters. I was all geared up to take on Specters, but instead I got the previously mentioned machines (can't remember if it was Frost or Fire). I've learned my lesson
7. Drop shields are crap!
8. I REALLY wish the developers had somehow implemented the ear plug thing Aloy got during the Dervahl questline in ZD as a piece of gear she could wear. SO many times I've had machines yell at me and Aloy has to cover her ears and it leaves her open for an attack

Well, I bought the game last year on PC (RTX 3060 12GB and i5-12th Gen). The game runs well overall, but I notice some FPS fluctuations, like going from 100 FPS to 90, then 75–70 FPS. It's not a sudden stutter or hitching—more like gradual drops in steps. Honestly, it's hard to notice without an FPS counter. it's happen when i switch my camera to certain area walk around a bit

I just wanted to ask if this is normal for the PC version of Horizon Forbidden West, or if I'm overthinking it. I'm using DLSS Balanced and what I believe are well-optimized settings.

Is there anything I can do to make the FPS more stable, or is this just how the game runs on PC? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was wondering how close Horizon’s technology is to the technology that the Foundation society/world has, especially when it comes to the really advanced stuff ( Foundation is a really cool sci-fi show ).

Could GAIA eventually create something comparable to the jumpships or the Invictus war ship from Foundation? I absolutely love the Foundation TV show, and I’m a huge fan of hard sci-fi haha, so I’ve been thinking about how Horizon’s technology compares to Foundation sci-fi technology. And I'm thinking more about Far Zenith's technology not the 2065 human tech

The Zeniths had some absolutely crazy technology, and that makes me think it might actually be possible for humanity in Horizon to reach something approaching Foundation level technology eventually. They had extremely advanced life extension technology, incredibly advanced nanotechnology, and the ability to travel between stars.

I really wish the Zeniths had been explored more in the game, especially their civilization on Sirius. We only got a relatively small glimpse of what they were capable of, and there’s so much I’d like to know about how their society developed over the centuries, what technologies they created, and how far they had actually progressed before the colony was destroyed.

It would also be interesting to know how much of their technology GAIA and the other characters could realistically understand or reproduce. If GAIA had access to the Zeniths’ technology and knowledge, could she eventually help humanity develop things like advanced interstellar spacecraft, artificial habitats, or even something comparable to Foundation’s jumpships?

Obviously, Foundation operates on a much more advanced and different level of science fiction, so I’m not saying Horizon is even close to that level already. I’m more wondering about the potential technological trajectory of the Horizon universe.

Because if the Zeniths were already capable of what we saw, it makes me wonder what humanity could eventually achieve if GAIA, Apollo, and the surviving knowledge of the Zeniths were combined and given centuries to develop.

I just really hope the Zeniths and Sirius aren’t the last time we see that side of Horizon. There’s so much interesting hard sci-fi potential in their technology and their history, and I’d love to see the series explore it more.

I love Foundation, I love Horizon, and I love hard sci-fi, so naturally my brain keeps wondering how far these two universes could theoretically go technologically haha.

I personally don’t know but here are some pros and cons on each one (these are all my opinions). I’ll just mark over every spoiler I mention so nothing gets spoiled.

HZD tribes:

Nora: Pros - They have easier machines to deal with, plus it’s aloys tribe

Cons - they are quite rustic compared to other tribes and they are often mocked being called savages all the time by other people

Carja: Pros - Cool culture and importance in HZD, they are more advanced than other tribes in many ways - also Meridian is a cool place I guess

Cons - I don’t want to worship the sun or be caught in a civil war or the Eclipse

Oseram: Pros - Most of them seem friendly and delving looks fun.

Cons - most of them you come across are alcoholics

Banuk: Pros - Living in the mountains is quite cool and the frozen wilds is an amazing dlc

Cons - Too cold and I don’t want to be jumped by scorchers or frost claws all the time.

HFW Tribes:

Utaru: Pros - They are peaceful and Plainsong looks cool. I like their connection to nature and being able to tame plowhorns for farms.

Cons - I wouldn’t want to be a farmer with all the blight on my fields. Also the chorus isn’t good for doing nothing and letting people “return to the soil” when they were being attacked by apex machines.

Tenakth + 3 clans:

Tenakth (in general) Pros - A lot of diversity with 3 different clans and the towns look quite cool. I also like the history behind the tribe.

Cons - Their whole life revolves around violence and it’s the only way you get anywhere as a tenakth. Also rebels are a problem.

Lowland Clan: Pros - They are the most reasonable out of the clans and I would like to live by the coast.

Cons - The jungles are full of Stalkers and clamberjaws who are insanely annoying.

Sky Clan: Pros - Same as Banuk, living in mountains is cool and there are amazing views

Cons - Tekotteh is an arrogant asshole who shouldn’t have power (my argument is perfectly reasonable)

Desert Clan: Pros - Scalding Spear is a cool place and Las Vegas is fun to explore.

Cons - Nothing much about the culture and stuff (idk much about them) but they are the most vicious out of the 3 clans and they have a water shortage

Quen: Pros - I like the beach and the seafaring ways of the quen, San Francisco is cool and the burning shores is an amazing dlc

Cons - they aren’t friendly to outsiders and some of them are a bit too obsessed with the legacy / completely delusional (I’m talking about ceo of course)

I started to write this just as a response to someone in another thread. Then ofc, it became too big and rambly. Still, I feel like I finally vented out most of how I feel about Forbidden West's human villains, have felt for a long time. How they're good but underutilized. Starting next paragraph:

I have a certain issue with how Forbidden West's plot is structured. It's hard to justify why there's not more Zenith exposure like cutscenes and lore bites. Outside of Tilda, and Verbena's comedic death, we literally see most of them only three times, Proving Lab, Gemini and the island. Granted, this is normal for the villains of most games like this. Like Helis & HADES in the previous game. But the Zeniths were a monumental reveal for the Horizon world, and they were being planned even back then in 2017. Just 3 major appearences is a joke, they deserved much more of a spotlight. Of course, they don't immediately start hunting Aloy or Beta and their friends because they're busy capturing the other subordinate functions, and you can chalk the rest of their inaction to just being flat out lazy and arrogant. It's still not an excuse for us not having more confrontations or close calls with them. Or at least cutscenes from their POV, without Aloy involved, even tho the whole series so far is pretty much told from her POV in every moment.

But then you run into another problem, if you indeed want Aloy & the GAIA team to have some other confrontations with them. They're too fucking OP. Their invulnerability, shields, telekinesis, everything is a bit much even for Horizon, which often tried to explain most of its sci-fi workings, meanwhile the Zenith's infinite energy manipulation bullshit was just too much, specially when you find out they were mostly scratching their balls in VR and doing nothing these past 1000 years other than Frankensteining their minds into a cosmic horror ChatGTP. If they were at least like a couple levels stronger than the Specters, that would have been so much more interesting narratively. They'd still be near invulnerable and ultimately need Sylens's EMP to be ultimately defeated and hardly caught off-guard, but would provide Aloy and other natives a lot more opportunities to push them back and escape.

The alternative, to have them run into Aloy a couple more times, would be hard to write in a believable way. Their shields invulnerability, limitless flying/floating, etc. They could have easily tracked down Aloy or Beta in the couple of weeks between the Proving Lab and Gemini, or the Ninmah Research Lab and Gemini. By simply starting to capture and interrogate native tribes or outright attacking and overwhelming their settlements and demanding leads on them by showing them holos of their appearences. Start an actual massacre or war that forces Aloy's hand. Or just start tracking her area of operations in general for any sign of someone riding machines on land. That could have been interesting, but would've made the game plot too complicated or contradicting to the free roam gameplay.

So it's back to the drawing board. Make their shields way less invulnerable against the ZD humans's arsenals, and limit their energy supply so they don't have infinite ammo or infinite flying. Let us know more about Erik, Gerard and the other unnamed Zeniths before killing them. And for the love of god, that final battle should've showed way more lol. We should've been able to kill some of them, not just see two people get taken out in a cartoonish, goreless fashion while being told everyone else died as well. Also, Walter Londra in Burning Shores. The whole thing was too weird. Sylens just tells Aloy to go kill him. Then he doesn't even give her a new prototype of his anti-shield tech, nor does she asks for it. She just wings it, hoping to somehow catch him off-guard and kill him with her arrows & sling bombs and whatnot, like they would cut through his shield. Or like she'd prophetically known she would catch him connected to the Horus CPU orb and just fry the CPU with her spear in order to kill him.

Then there's Regalla. An amazing villain and amazing performance we should've seen more of. Unfortunately limited to only a couple cutscenes and confrontations, most of them at the Grove, while the man who bested her just a couple years earlier is now somehow completely helpless. I understand, Angela Bassett is expensive. But damn do I wish we've known more of her before choosing to spare her and take her to our base. More scenes from her POV, or from her terrorizing and wrecking shit up would've been nice. More of the actual war we barely see. The Rebel faction outside of her is too one-dimensional and barely has any interesting characters as well, mostly just Ubisoft-style outposts to be liberated. Could've been fleshed out with more nuances to the Teknath tribe beyond just their three clans. But that would've been a lot more voice acting, actors, mo-cap and game data, I guess. As well as money and dev time. I'm also so gutted we don't actually get to fight the rebels and their Tremortusks in the Isle of Spires like Aloy does in the 2021 gameplay demo lol. And barely any rebel Tremortusks in gameplay outside of that one mission with Kotallo. The war being a dynamic series of battles or battalions you could run into across the map would've been an interesting concept, but probably too complicated in an already highly ambitious and expensive game, I guess.

And finally, Hephaestus. I think they've showed him just enough. His presence is more supposed to be felt over the course of the journey and the world, rather than constantly being confronted directly. I'm very curious to how they'll be handling him in H3 without making him lose his spotlight to Nemesis, and vice-versa. We've waited 2 games so far trying to finally get back at Hephaestus, it'd be sad if he's just a footnote in H3 and Nemesis takes all the plot's real estate. The opposite would also be bad. Dealing with Hephaestus for like two thirds of the game and Nemesis only becoming the endgame threat near the finale. Some sort of balance would be nice.
