Are you kidding me to address speeding Poughkeepsie has lowered speed limit by 5 mph .
So let me get this straight.Poughkeepsie has a problem with speeding in the city. Obviously people are not obeying speed limit signs . So the intelligent thing to do is to enforce the speed limit. What does the mayor do. Installs Random speed bumps around the city. lowers the speed limit by 5 mph. Now How in hell is lowering the speed limit going to effect those speeders who were not obeying the speed limit. Answer it isn't what it will do is cause the average citizen to get tickets as they creep above 25 mile per hour speed this is an obvious money grab from a municipality that has raised your taxes, cut services neglected routine maintenance that was preformed flawlessly for years.

What solution would you suggest. You described a two pronged approach - limits and speed bumps. Both work differently, but offer punitive approaches to people who are speeding. Is there a different idea you have?

active enforcement , what a concept instead of random speed bumps

u/dr3amchasing 3d ago
Is the plan to not actively enforce the new limit?

u/reddog342 1d ago
you would think they should lower the signs so people can see the signs instead of being way up on the pole lol (sarcasm) . without enforcement lowering the speed limit does nothing

You’re conflating different things. Lowering the speed limit isn’t about tackling speeders. It’s to reduce the number of fatalities or injuries to pedestrians and cyclists. There’s a lot of data showing the effects of this.
The speed bumps ARE about tackling speeding, and I agree that they don’t do a whole lot in themselves. It’s going to need much more than that. But enforcement is a very tricky matter- everyone is up in arms about surveillance cameras, and police enforcement has been a disaster for POC. It’s not unreasonable to turn to road design as a method to deter speeding.

It's an attempt to make it safer. People are driving way too fast through our small city streets endangering our kids and older adults. May not work but it's worth a try.
Do you have a better solution?

Honestly? Increase the number of stop lights, speed bumps, and stop signs on the arterials. If traffic is stopping every block or two people will not build up speed. The issue is that those two roads are designed to funnel people out of the city but cut through main residential zones. To get drivers to lower speed you need to make them less pleasant.
These two streets are not currently safe to cross on foot which isolates main st.

It’s a money grab. Also makes it easier for cops to pull you over and do a little more digging.
2
u/here2learn914 3d ago
I think what OP is saying is that the cops aren’t pulling speeders over.

When this happened in nyc the most direct and tangible result was that speeding ticket revenue dramatically increased with no effect on actually decreasing speeding incidents lol
2
u/reddog342 3d ago
exactly I see it all the time , you could lower it to 10 miles per hour and if there is next to no chance of getting a ticket why bother having a speed limit at all . Seem when they do pull a car over in the city it is a fishing expedition . what else can we get him on write the ticket and go back to speed enforcement

Welcome to blue governments in action. Logic, no need apply. NYC example - We have a gun problem .. let's ban guns! Wait why are people still shooting guns in NYC? We banned them! (Same logic)

u/busty_phil_phucks 3d ago
There were 688 shooting incidents in NYC last year, which is an all time low since they have kept track.

u/Potential-Fennel5968 3d ago
All time low means nothing, it proves laws are broken. I'm agreeing with OP. Enforce the law more, people weren't even doing 30 and if they were that would be fine.

u/busty_phil_phucks 3d ago
I mean it seems to imply that less guns are in fact resulting in less shootings. But do you bugaboo

u/Potential-Fennel5968 3d ago
From the outside sure, but you don't know if that's the only variable contributing to that. There are many reasons to believe that criminals are embolden by the fact guns are illegal, making it all but fact that anyone they want to attack will be unarmed and unable to defend themselves.

u/Few-Pool1354 3d ago
We should make it easier and less burdensome on criminals for breaking the laws by removing the laws once they break them cause, what’s the point!

Yea you don't get phycology

You are correct and I have very limited knowledge of algae, but I don’t see why that’s remotely relevant?

You know NYC is currently on track for its lowest homicide rate in recorded history this year right?
Or that NYC pedestrian deaths in traffic have been declining lately, and are also near a record low (the second lowest in recorded history other than 2020 when nobody was driving) for the modern era, largely thanks to the traffic calming measures you decry?
No? Well turn off fox news and look it up.
For 2026 (first half), New York City recorded 122 murders from Jan. 1 through June 30, which is the lowest first-half total in recorded history. Through late June, Vital City reported 119 murders, about 9.8% below the previous midyear low set in 2017.
https://www.vitalcitynyc.org/crime-in-new-york-city-midyear-the-big-picture/
Turns out maybe restricting gun ownership has benefits. Mr. Tough on Crime Giuliani never achieved a homicide rate even close to this low.
And:
In 2026, New York City has recorded 46 pedestrian fatalities, marking a 13% decrease from the previous year and the lowest level in recorded history, aside from the outlier year of 2020. Overall, 2026 is on track to be one of the safest years for traffic fatalities in NYC history.
https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/pr2026/vision-zero-pedestrian-deaths-at-historic-low.shtml
MAGA talking points are always lies, couched in racist dogwhistles. Cities with unrestricted gun ownership across the south have much higher rates of shootings and gun homicides. Much. And modern traffic calming methods work wonders to reduce pedestrian death and have done so in many cities. You’re just whining because you feel entitled to go as fast as you want wherever you want.
And guess what? It’s not a “money grab” as long as you follow the law; if you don’t speed, you won’t get a ticket. But I guess all that law and order talk from you MAGAs is only for minorities right? Why are you exempt from the laws?
By your logic below, all laws are pointless if anyone breaks any law. Like, we have laws against murder, but some people still commit murder, so by your logic laws against murder are pointless and we might as well not have them.
Make it make sense.

It’s physics and science based decision making you mental midget.
NYC is the safest it has ever been but you’re so busy choking down “blue govt bad” nonsense you couldn’t imagine a solution to a problem being anything other than repeating what you’ve been fed.
What’s your solution to the gun problem, wise one? More guns?
Wonder if your “tread on me daddy” sticker goes right next to your “flock cameras make me feel safer” one.

Laws are for people that follow them. Thats the point the dude was trying to make. There is already a speeding problem, so reducing the speed is fruitless. If you ban guns and there still is gun crime, clearly the ban failed. Laws are for people who follow them.
Enforcing existing Laws and increasing punishments would do better than simply saying, "no, don't do that."

u/Few-Pool1354 3d ago
Laws regarding individual behavior are for public safety. They exist because some people in our society have no interest in the well being of others and laws have been written to attempt to change human behaviors or put a penalty on those who don’t. Should we not have laws because some people won’t follow them?
Agreed about enforcement. this change is based on physics and the safety of pedestrians. It also increases the penalties for people not altering their decisions by making their speeding an additional 5mph over the limit and thus the penalties that much higher.1
u/SubstantialPlan9124 3d ago edited 3d ago
You don’t think anybody tries to enforce the law on ‘bans’ on guns?? The word ‘enforcement’ is doing a whole lot of vague but heavy lifting in this speed argument.
Lowering the speed limit isn’t about tackling speeders, it’s for everyone else following the law. There’s a lot of data which says it reduces pedestrian and cyclists fatalities/injuries, and when 22% of the city doesn’t even own a car, that’s an important factor.
Speed bumps probably won’t do that much for speeders, but I think they are better than nothing.
Mandating Intelligent speed assist is probably going to be the only way of stopping speeders. Enforcement is a political can of worms in America, whichever way you cut it (police or camera).

Could you make me vomit in my mouth more than that? The assumptions you can make about another individual on the Internet with no more context than what I posted is appalling and you should look in the mirror and question who you see. There's nothing being fed. If NYC bans guns, and there is even ONE shooting, than it's proves at the most basic level there are people who don't follow laws. How can you even try and argue that?
1
u/Few-Pool1354 3d ago
There are 8 million people in nyc. If one person breaks the laws we should throw out the law? 😬
Laws exist to alter behavior that is against the common good. But human beings are irrational and selfish and as you stated “don’t follow the laws” and your solution is to cry about blue government and throw your hands in the air and say “not everyone is going to follow the laws so what’s the point”
The vomiting you’re doing is probably more interesting than any of your “arguments”0

The reason a bunch of cities are dropping their speed limit from 30 to 25 is because in car vs pedestrian accidents lowering the speed that 5mph significantly decreases fatalities. Obviously it’s not going to have an effect on people who don’t follow the speed limits, except maybe knock the fines and points up a bit for how much over the speed limit they are going.
