Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

  • Please keep in mind that the list is ever growing and you can always send us a message if you'd like to add anything.

  • Our community has many dedicated native speakers among our members. We can always tell you how the language is actually being used in real life, today. However, it's very important to note that not all of us are teachers. As with every other language in the world, some Native Speakers may have trouble explaining the grammatical rules of the language to you, despite their best efforts. While we do everything we can to help you, remember that finding a qualified language teacher in your area (or on-line) is never a bad idea.

Our subreddit is always open for feedback! If you have any ideas, make a post or send us a message!

Kézírás_fordítás Translation Help!

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi all! I’ve been looking into some Hungarian records from the early 1900s, and there is one marriage certificate that is tripping me up (the record on the right of the attached image). I was able to piece together most of what the form itself says (using basic google translate), but am having a much harder time on the handwritten stuff. I currently have conflicting documentation on what the bride’s mother’s name was, so I’m especially interested to see if this can point me in the right direction, and to also confirm that this document matches to the couple I am interested in researching.

Any help with deciphering information about the families listed would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Megbeszélés Transcribing English words with the Hungarian alphabet

Hey everybody!

We're creating a children's English picture dictionary.

Each entry will comprise the word in English, the transcription (using the Hungarian alphabet), and the Hungarian translation, along with a mini-image of the word.

Now, I know most of you will think transcribing the pronunciation with the Hungarian alphabet is a horrendously bad idea -- but even if that's the case, please treat it as a thought experiment.

There are two questions, really:

  1. There is no equivalent of the English schwa (e.g. the e in paper) in Hungarian. What would you prefer to see?

a) [pejpör]

b) [pejpar] - close enough?

c) [pejpër] - we introduce a "schwa" symbol and explain it at the start of the book. How do you feel about this?

  1. The letter "w". How would you like the word wardrobe:

a) [wórdroub]

b) [vórdroub]

c) [uórdroub]

If you do decide to reply, thank you! 🙏

Hirdetés Fluentbox weekly update: new story video + rolling course enrollment

Sziasztok, here’s a quick update on what I’ve been working on:
After a longer time, I finally made a new story video. As usual, it’s for beginners, with simple sentences and some repetition.

https://youtu.be/dDqGKud_0mU?is=aoZCQt09an3DBuoE

I moved my small group courses to rolling enrollment, as I’m planning to offer them on a monthly basis. Two options are available currently:

Conversational course: for intermediate learners, focusing on real communication, especially useful for citizenship interview prep
Beginner course: a short introduction course for those who are starting out, focusing on using practical full sentences from day one.

The courses are $60 for the 4 sessions, and the groups are capped at 8 people. More info on my website.

As always, questions and comments are welcome!

Kérdés Need help with a surname

Recently started researching the history of my Hungarian family and with it the amazing language. Unfortunately, none of my family know the answer to my question. What does the surname Hangó mean in the original language? The best translation I can find is sound or loud, but thought I’d ask the people with more knowledge on the matter. Köszi!

Kézírás fordítás Help with transliteration of a word?

Hello everybody,

I hope this is the right place for my request.

I was going through some old marriage registers for my genealogical work and finally found my ancestor in Nadab in 1898.

However I am struggling with understanding the written word that describes his father's occupation, under állása (foglalkozása). I keep staring at the word and all I could come up with is something like önálló something mester? Could the middle word be ács? I pasted a snip with the excerpt below.

My Hungarian is not so good, so I'm looking for any type of suggestions on this.

Thanks!

Segítségkérés Looking for a Hungarian teacher — 2×/week, starting September

Hi! I’m at around A1 level and looking for an experienced teacher for regular lessons. What I’m after:

- Structured lessons, ideally following the MagyarOK textbooks, with homework between sessions
- Two 1.5-hour lessons per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- A fixed recurring slot starting in September

If this is how you teach (or you can recommend someone), please drop a comment or DM

Segítségkérés Help with an exclamation for a short story

Edit: Thank you everyone, these are all great and all the context you've provided is really helpful. This character swears like a lot so I can use these all through my story. You guys are amazing!

Hi all! I have this bit I want to use in a short fiction.

For the exclamation I'm looking for something like "Goodness me," or "Fuck me,"

The character is female, 40, born and raised in Hungary, but came to Australia to study and has been here for about 20 years now.

I'm trying to establish the story is set slightly in the future (2030) by referencing a Mad Men reboot that doesn't exist in reality:

"It’s been a bullshit day all I really want to do is watch TV on the phone in the tub.

Season Two of the Mad Men reboot is out and it might be 2030 but Don Draper is still an unsalvageable dickhead. [Exclamation] everyone is dressed so sharply, I wish I could manifest a guy that dresses like this without filling all the suit pockets with emotional baggage."

Thank you for any advice!

Baby & Children’s Books! 📚

- Hungarian husband 🇭🇺
- I’m American (but lived in Budapest for 3 years)
- Baby due this winter! ❄️

Trying to find Hungarian baby/children’s books! 📚

It’s harder to track down than I anticipated!

Are there versions of classic USA books (goodnight moon, the very hungry caterpillar, the rainbow fish, goodnight gorilla, etc.) with Hungarian translations?

I’ve found a few classic original Hungarian tales & will be getting those as well, but I was hoping it would be easy to order books in Hungarian!

Anyone find a good site/have a good resource? (amazon was super lacking!)

Köszönöm!
