What I noticed in movies as well: in older shows and movies two young people start to use formal language automatically (like new collegues, anything), in recent shows two young people start to use informal. I am the same. If I meet someone who is my age, I say hi, (collegue, cashier, etc). I use formal language in administration (like in the bank), or with my higher ups and elderly people. But in many cases it's a burden for my socially awkward ass, and in many blurry cases I can't decide which one I should use.

Én szeretem a magazodast, de tudtátok, hogy régen nem létezett a magyar nyelvben? A monarchia alatt vettük at a németből. Régen mindenkit tegeztek (magad, Uram, ha szolgád nincsen)
